Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session. We say fantasy sports, but since most every question will be about football, well... you figure it out. Anyway, one week down, for most of you 16 more to go. Lots to discuss... thanks for showing up and here we go!

Mason (Nebraska)

I'm really struggling at RB and need some advice. In my 16 team league, every 25 return yards are 2 points, that said who do you like better the rest of the year, Leon Washington or Fred Jackson? Always appreciate your work.

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Well, I like Fred Jackson better for normal formats, and this one as well. I really think Spiller needs to play better this week or his short-term opportunity could pass. With the Seahawks, I just don't think Washington will get enough touches.

Endy M (New York)

How do you feel about Randy Moss this weekend with him unhappy about his contract and going against the NYJ. Especially since he wasn't that impressive last week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

I'm not at all worried about Moss. My conservative ranking of him - the rankings are up, by the way! - is solely because of Darrelle Revis of the Jets. Moss will have a terrific season. He certainly has motivation. The contract plays no role.

Dan (Illinois)

Baseball keeper question: Ubaldo or Latos?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

Baseball! I'll say Ubaldo, but barely.

Mark (Green Bay)

Where would you rank A. Foster in terms of keeper league value? I can trade him for Steven Jackson, but I can keep Foster for a 6th round pick, and I can't keep Jackson.

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

You're worried about keeper stuff after one week? Really? I think it's dangerous to assume Foster will be as good as S.Jackson this season. I can't argue with the keeper ramifications, especially if you can't keep Jackson, but I'd worry about this in November.

Mo (Chicago)

Was your ranking of Beanie (32) based on him starting? Think they'll just ease him in slowly or don't like the matchup?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

I think Beanie will play, but I think the Cardinals will split the touches. Hightower is not viewed as the main guy, but Wells at 10 carries just can't do much.

Chris (Boston)

EK, pick two. Gore, Mathews, Charles, Bradshaw. Go Phils!

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Braves lose! This week, I have Gore and Bradshaw. Really, the Giants can push the Colts defense around all night. For the season, Gore and Charles.

Peyton Hillis (Cleveland)

You're taking me over Justin Forsett for the rest of the year in your flex spot right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

For the year? No. For this week, um, no. I wouldn't be concerned right now with anything but Week 2.

Frank (Houston)

Should I be worried about Crabtree? Maybe consider starting Clayton?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Because of one bad game? The 49ers will be fine. I laugh when I see people panic this much. San Fran has a good team, but they just didn't play well in Seattle. They will probably lose this week against the Saints, but the offense should show up. I like Clayton, but not more than Crabtree.

Justin (Iowa City)

Trade Foster for Marshall and Greene?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

The first of I'm sure many Foster questions. Yes, I make that deal in a second, and I'm not even a big Shonn Greene fan.

Brendan (Los Angeles)

Who is your #1 free agent pickup this week BESIDES Brandon Jackson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Either Vick or Legedu Naanee. I like Naanee more because he'll still matter in a few weeks. I really think Kolb plays Week 4 and plays well, and keeps the job. Philly isn't debating their QBs... Kolb is the choice when healthy. In San Diego, I do not expect Vincent Jackson to play there again...

Bobby (Hawaii)

Who would you rather have sit on your bench - Nate Burleson or Justin Ringer?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Burleson still has a shot to be a bye week fill in on occasion. I don't see how Ringer does unless Chris Johnson gets hurt, and I don't think he will get hurt. Why would he?

Patrick (Rochester, NY)

Will Mike Thomas end the year as the top receiver in Jacksonville?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

He could. I think it will be Mike Sims-Walker, but I'm not a big fan of his either way. Thomas has become ownable though.

Matt (New York)

Jerome Harrison or Cadillac Williams this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Would prefer to avoid questions like these, since all the rankings are posted and they are free.. so check 'em out and save the time. I went Cadillac. Would prefer to avoid the Browns mess if possible. http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/football/ffl/story?page=10ranksWeek2RB

matt (illinois)

Who ends the year with more targets in Dallas...Jason Witten or Dez Bryant?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Definitely Witten... but does it matter? I think people expect immediate production from Bryant. I don't. Witten will be fine.

Jacob (Michigan)

Hi Eric, I can't afford your flex rankings, so could you help me here? Would Welker be a better start than Addai or Best?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Well, don't blame me! Anyway, I have Welker in my top 10 WRs, so yeah, he will rank ahead of Addai and Best.

Al (DC)

BRoberts or Ellsbury? Who is the better keeper?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Roberts because it's second base, and to be honest, I don't totally trust either guy. But 40 steals at 2B is more valuable than 50 in the outfield.

Robert (Oregon)

"I don't think he will get hurt. Why would he?"Because football is an extremely violent game and people that play it get hurt. Is CJ any more or less an injury risk than any other player? No. But is he more an injury risk than you or I? I'd say likely so.

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

I'm saying let's not assume a player gets hurt, unless it's someone with a propensity for doing so. You can't roster 32 backup running backs... and the people who think Ringer will simply step in and be like Chris Johnson and run for 2,000 yards are missing the point. Ringer might be awful. I don't handcuff players because in many cases it's a waste of a roster spot.

Matt (Clevleand)

Brent Celek had like 4 targets last week...with Kolb's injury, should I be scanning the wire for a Jeremy Shockey (or the likes of)?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

It's one week. I wouldn't worry about Celek one bit. Four targets is meaningless considering the starting QB was awful and now he's concussed.

Adam (Illinois)

I have Ryan Grant. Obviously I need to replace him, Brandon Jackson or Brandon Jacobs? Both are on waivers

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

I would still choose Jacobs, but I'm guessing most people would take Jackson. What has he proven in his career? Not a ton. He has opportunity, so he should be owned, but Jacobs could still be a 800-yard, 10-TD guy.

Justin (LA)

Should I drop CJ Spiller for Brandon Jackson? I would hate to give up on him after just one game....

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

I wouldn't drop Spiller yet. Way too early. I'm not a big fan of rookies, but let's see more than a few games first.

Alex (SF)

Keeping McCluster on your bench in 12 team ppr league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Trying to, especially in leagues that count return yards. McCluster can play, but who knows how many plays he gets as a WR.

Brian (NJ)

Lost Stafford this week? A. Hill a good pick-up?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Not particularly. I ranked 25 QBs (we all do) and Hill wasn't a consideration. You can't find anyone else?

Matt (Beckland)

Is chris young (OF) a top 70 player next year in a vac?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I'd say top 50. With 30/30 potential that he'll come close to realizing, and a good-enough batting average, I have few concerns.

matt (illinois)

Eddie Royal averages 10 targets a game?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Anything is possible, but I'm skeptical any Broncos WR will. They have 3 of them and they look interchangable to Orton for now. And with Maroney joining in at RB, I'm thinking the Broncos will establish the run game more. Watch out, Knowshon.

Tim (Towson)

Hey EK, I'm surprised you have Vick in your Top 10. I agree, but I think you're the most conservative of all the analysts about unknowns, and Vick certainly applies. Why do you feel confident about him this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

I am the most conservative, but a game against the Lions kinda erases any concerns. Vick might not win the game - that concerns me as an Eagles fan - but he should be able to produce 250 total yards and a few scores. Plus, some of the other borderline top-10 options have extenuating circumstances... Eli might not need to throw at all.. Cutler on the road...Flacco in tough place.

Kevin (Warrenton, VA)

Can you offer more details on why you're not high on Shonn Greene?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

For now, it appears the Jets will keep his touches very much in check. Doesn't mean Greene can't become a 20-carry per game RB, but this week I expect to see quite a bit of Tomlinson. Might be a pure split.

Shane (Queen Creek, AZ)

Hi Eric: If Beanie Wells' injury issues persist, could LaRod Stephens-Howling be worth a pickup in deeper leagues?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Wouldn't surprise me one bit because Hightower put the ball on the ground a few times, and the Cards would like to keep him healthy for third downs, receiving duties, etc.

Chad (St. Paul)

You can't say "Watch out, Knowshon" and not give us your opinion on the splits there. Moreno was drafted by many as #2rb - still there? or more of a flex? Bradshwa or Moreno on the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Will blog about this after the chat, but Maroney was acquired for a reason, and the reason is to push Moreno or make this a timeshare. Absolutely. For now, I say Moreno barely over Bradshaw for the season...this week, it's Bradshaw.

Jennifer (Tampa)

Help a girl in my first year of fantasy. Need 2 RB (PPR)- Bradshaw, PThomas or McCoy. I have Cinci Defense- should I pick up Oak, Carolina or SD? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

This week I use Bradshaw and Thomas over McCoy.. I might most weeks, too. And I think the Bengals defnese is fine. Just one bad week.

Bert and Earnie (Sesame Street)

marshawn lynch = GB bound?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I honestly have not heard any real news about that happening... all conjecture from people who realize the Bills have extra RBs.

Rob (Baltimore)

So I lost Ryan Grant and got outbid for Brandon Jackson (Bet 91 and winner bid 100) and am hurting at RB. Would you trade Jermichael Finely for Joseph Addai (Cooley is on the waiver wire)? Thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Yeah, that isn't ideal, but it's reasonable. At least you can use Addai each week. Finley is awesome, but in the end, Cooley won't be a ton worse.

John (Chicago)

Now that Maroney has been shipped out, who is the better option long term, Forsett or Freddie Taylor?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Still Forsett to me.. I want to see more of the Seattle offense (I might be the only one).

Paul (Las Cruces,NM)

Which Matt should I start this weekend. Schaub or Ryan?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

C'mon... it's going to be Schaub every week.

Mike (NYC)

Is Kyle Orton a viable weekly fill-in if youre a Kolb owner without Vick?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

Sure, I have no problem with that. Orton is underrated. And by the end of the season, he's not going to hurt you.

Adam (Minny)

So you think Fred Jackson has some value. Would you want him over Hillis or Fred Taylor?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

Yeah, both. But you'd have to avoid overrating what happened in Week 1... if you can! The Bills clearly need to do something else, and I still think that means more of Fred.

Chad (Wheeling)

AJ Mass made me fall out of my seat this morning when he said that he WOULD NOT trade Arian Foster for Mendy OR Mathews straight up! Please weigh in.

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

He might be right. Look, nobody knows for sure about Foster. It was a complete surprise. I tend to trust what more long-term evaluations of players, but certainly Foster should be very good. With the Steelers losing both o-tackles, Mendenhall might be ranked too high. But don't rip AJ, he does a great job. A differing opinion is not necessarily a wrong one.

Jonathan Dilger (Bloomington, IN)

Yo Mr. Conservative -- Back to Rob's question concerning bidding --- How much of a $100 FAAB do you blow after Week 1? Lots of options on the wire and lots of fluff on my bench... (including B Jackson)

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

It depends. If I feel like my season is slipping away, because I don't have a good team (not because I lost Week 1) then I would spend more. No point saving it until Week 7 if I think I will be 2-4. If I know I have a good team, then I don't spend $80 on Brandon Jackson. Depends on the structure of my team. You can tell if you've got the goods on a team.

Kevin K. (Home (recovering))

Trade Vick for Palmer?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

The Eagles have every intention of using Kolb to start when he's healthy. Palmer will start 16 games... for Vick it might be only 1 or 2. Really.

Ghost of Darren McFadden (Da Raiders)

Would you trade me straight up for Shonn Greene?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

While I'm cautious on Greene, I absolutely sell high on McFadden that way. Perfect buy low, sell high trade.

DJ (NY)

Who played great in week 1 but not worth picking up?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

How about Marcedes Lewis? Scored twice. Might not score again.

Drew (Indy)

Straight up trade foster for MJD ACCEPTED! Best week one trade ever?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

On paper, wow. But some deals like this end up closer than at first glance.

Mark (NYC)

Eric, for all the hilarious people worried after just one week....refer them to the first baseball chat of the year, when there was panic over the fact that Joey Votto had an 0 for 4 in his first game.

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Oh, I'm pretty sure the level of panic is FAR worse in football... but those who panic aren't going to listen to reason. They never do.

Mike (Boulder, CO)

I own both Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas. Should i be starting both or neither each week? Does Reggie Bush make Pierre Thomas a bad fantasy option?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

One has nothing to do with the other. Play your top options, period. Thomas is a good option. The former Heisman winner is not. The fact they are teammates plays no role.

Josh (Pittsburgh)

In your opinion, does Bernard Scott significantly affect Cedric Benson's value in any way?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Nope. Not unless Benson gives him reason to matter. Pure backup, or third down guy.

Mitch (New Jersey)

If Shonn Greene has a bad week 2 should I trade him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

If he has another bad week you won't be able to. I think Greene will be fine, but the Jets should see what LT can do with more touches. It makes sense.

Mike (DC)

Sims-Walker, Wallace and Bryant are very close in the ESPN rankings for week 2. What are your thoughts on these three? I have to start one of them. Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

I think they are very close, and as such, you could flip a coin. I'm not being silly, but honestly, with WRs out of the top 25 or so, we can make a case for anyone using a good argument. I would prob go Sims-Walker.

Kevin (Indy)

Eric - I must roster exactly 2 QBs and start 1, I have McNabb and Kolb. Should I drop one and try and claim Hasselback, Garrard, or Vick or just roll with McNabb this week. Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

I don't particularly like McNabb this week, but I wouldn't bother with one-week fill-ins, and cutting Kolb is a mistake.

Bob (Indiana)

Who deserves a temporary spot on my bench before they become droppable: Kolb or Fred Jackson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Well, depends on your QB situation. If Kolb was merely your backup and you only needed him for one week, then keep Jackson. He should matter soon.

Mike (San Diego)

Have you given up on Bernard Berrian?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I have not, but I did rank Harvin over him (which he should be). Berrian might not become an every week starter, but it's too early to proclaim that. It's one game and the Vikings did play the Saints. Favre started last season with an 8-point fantasy game, ya know!

Tweety Bird (Miami)

I'm reading your chat so I can hear you hate on Brandon Jackson

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Yep. You guessed it. I wrote a glowing blog about him and ranked him as a starter at RB... I must hate him!

Josh (Indy)

Should I be worried about Percy Harvin's lack of timing with Favre? They just looked...off.

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

One week. They'll be fine this week. Honestly, how can you judge anything off of one week?

Bob (Madison, WI)

Every question so far is BJax, Vick, Kolb, Fred Jackson. We get it. Move on. What are your thoughts on Hakeem Nicks giong forward? Sell high, or ride the wave?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Well, that is what people are asking me. I don't see thousands of questions at once, but a few. I think Nicks can be a top 20 WR, but he hasn't proven it yet. In a way, he's a natural sell high option because a 3-TD game does that. But I'd also continue to use him.

Ryne (AZ)

Do you think they will shut down Felix Hernandez soon due to him pitching so many innings already this year and with Seattle playing for pretty much nothing the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Nope. If anything the Mariners will want to use Felix more to see if he can win a few and take the Cy Young. He can't win it with 11 wins.

Roger (Portsmouth, NH)

Baseball! Why are players like Johan and Josh Johnson listed as "DTD" and not DL when they have been officially announced as out for the season? Am trying to win my league and need that spot, but can't DL JJ. In a keeper league, got him in 7th round, I don't want to drop him!

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Don't blame us, blame the Mets and Marlins. They haven't put their players on the DL, which is why we haven't. That's it. They are under no obligation to do so, it's more paperwork.

James (Chicago)

Thoughts on Vincent Jackson for this season. Worth the roster spot?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

I have low expectations, but I think he's worth hanging on to. He might say he'll never go back to the Chargers, but things change. A year ago we all thought Crabtree would never report.

Mike (San Diego)

YOU HATE FELIX!!! I heard it on the BB Today podcast.

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Well, I don't remember it quite that way, but at least you downloaded it! Me voting for Price for AL Cy Young isn't an indictment on others...

Eric (Toronto)

Santonio Holmes is sitting on my bench. will he be servicable as a wr2 or 3 when he gets back? the jets offense sucks

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Sounds like you answered your own question! Yeah, I think Holmes will matter as a WR3, and help the offense out... but they had weapons on Monday and things went poorly.

Mike (NJ)

Who will lead the Dallas Rushing Attack in yds and TD's this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

All summer I said Barber, and I'm not changing it yet. Felix Jones still has a lot to prove, mainly in durability.

Pink (Seattle)

Wont it be weird to see a 2000 yd rushing season every year when they move to an 18 game season?

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

It would be equivalent to baseball going to a 170-game schedule. Not cool for the historic stats side of things.

Eric Karabell
  (4:01 PM)

OK, our time is apparently up, so thank you for the thousands of questions... wow, TON of questions today. Must be the start of football season or something! Anyway, have a great day and best of luck in Week 2... I'll be back chatting every Mon and Wed at 3 p.m. ET... enjoy.
