Chat with Beano Cook

Beano Cook
  (3:03 PM)

Good afternoon. please forgive me that UCLA would make it close against Stanford. I'm now 1-1 on the season. Next pick at the end of the chat.

Hammer (Miami)

Beano, I know I'm early but do the Canes have a chance against Pitt?

Beano Cook
  (3:03 PM)

I think Miami will be the favorite. The only advantage that Pitt has in the home field.

alan (sc)

Who has been the most impressive team thusfar in this young college football season?

Beano Cook
  (3:05 PM)

Well I would say Michigan because of the way they won last Saturday at Notre Dame. I'm also impressed with the way Oklahoma destroyed FSU. It looks like South Carolina MIGHT make it the SEC championship game.

Newman (NY Postoffice)

Hello Beano. Who's on upset alert this weekend? Jambalaya!!!!

Beano Cook
  (3:06 PM)

I think Arizona has a slight chance to pull an upset over Iowa but that's about it.

Richard (Point Pleasant, NJ)

Alabama or Ohio State, who has the toughest battle the rest of the way? And does Penn State have trouble staying in the top 10?

Beano Cook
  (3:08 PM)

Alabama does, the SEC is much stronger than the Bin Ten. I did pick Ohio State to win the National Title along with everybody else.

Ralph (Pittsburgh)

hey Beano, what are your thoughts on the LSU QB situation? They are looking good on D and have serious skill position talent, but Jefferson is an anchor around their necks.

Beano Cook
  (3:09 PM)

LSU is unbelievable. They almost lost against UNC and they have to go to Florida and Arkansas plus they play Alabama at home. In the last three seasons they have been 8-8 in conference games.

James (Lawrence)

Beano! Is Kansas now a contender in the North?

Beano Cook
  (3:11 PM)

They are a contender but that's all. It's Nebraska's division to win.

Grant (Chicago)

How about that Notre Dame, huh?

Beano Cook
  (3:12 PM)

It was a tough loss. I thought they would win that game and win they went up 24-21 I thought they had it. But Mr. Robinson (no relationship to Mrs. Robinson) took over that game and won it for Michigan.

Matt (MA)

Was that Joe Montana's son playing QB for ND last weekend? lol, was he adopted?

Beano Cook
  (3:13 PM)

No, that's his son and he has another son at Washington. And not he wasn't adopted.

James (Ann Arbor, MU)

How long do you think Denard Robinson can put up these statistics?

Beano Cook
  (3:15 PM)

I hope he makes it through the season. He's carried the ball 57 times in the first two games. He takes a tremendous beating but watching him on TV he seems to be tough, real tough. If he keeps this up, he becomes a Heisman Trophy contender.

Nick (Denver)

Beano, what is your cure for a hangover, and could you give it to VaTech?

Beano Cook
  (3:16 PM)

(Laughing) Good question, you have a since of humor. If they play Wesley, they might win.

Lynn (Monticello, FL)

Good afternoon Mr. Cook, my question is will the Big 12 conference add to more programs to bring the conference number of schools to 12 and if so what 2 schools would they be.

Beano Cook
  (3:17 PM)

I understand that they won't add any teams but I think they should add TCU and maybe Houston. TCU is the logical choice.

Larry Scott (Walnut Creek, CA)

It seems like TCU is still bitter and holds a grudge against Baylor. Is there any truth to that?

Beano Cook
  (3:18 PM)

I don't know. I think TCU felt they should have been in the Big XII before Baylor but because of politics they didn't. I don't know if there is any bad blood between these two but we will find out on Saturday.

Matt (CA)

Beano, Please discuss this Bush Heisman. As a USC grad, I knew Reggie a little when I went there. Did he take money? Yes, probably. But you are going to remove that Heisman when OJ's is still up for our viewing pleasure? Reggie was the best player that year (and that I've ever seen, nonetheless), so how does taking money affect how he played?

Beano Cook
  (3:20 PM)

Number one, I'm not going to get into the OJ Simpson thing. Personally, I think he should keep the trophy and his name should still be in the books. What he did off the field didn't enhance his play on the field unlike in baseball and some Olympic sports. As far as I'm concerned, Reggie Bush is still the winner of the 2005 Heisman Trophy.

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

Beano, huge fan! Anyways, BSU is the center of attention, dont you think if they go without a loss the BCS HAS to give them a shot? Next year they wont have the team, and two consecutive BCS bowl wins? Cmon right? what are your views?

Beano Cook
  (3:22 PM)

Look, if BSU finishes first or second in the national rankings they will play for the national title. It they finish undefeated they will play for in a BCS bowl. But they have to finish either first or second to play for the national title.

frank beamer (blacksburg)

am i on the hot seat?

Beano Cook
  (3:22 PM)

(Laughing) No Mr. Beamer you're not on the hot seat.

Everyone (Not South Bend)

Michigan? Really? 2 wins over mediocre teams just erases two years of nothingness? Must be nice.

Beano Cook
  (3:24 PM)

Notre Dame isn't a nothing team, especially in South Bend. Anytime you win at Notre Dame, it's a feat and especially in the way Michigan won.

Joe (IN)

What's the best matchup this weekend?

Beano Cook
  (3:25 PM)

Iowa vs. Arizona, Nebraska vs. Washington and Arkansas vs. Georgia.

Fred (Walla Walla)

What is better; Bama's defense or Oregon's offense?

Beano Cook
  (3:25 PM)

I have to be honest, I'd be guessing if I answer that. But that could be a good matchup in the title game.

Carol (NJ)

Why doesn't Rutgers ever schedule an OOC opponent that is tougher than say, Seton Hall Prep (NJ)?

Beano Cook
  (3:26 PM)

They had a couple games with North Carolina, they have a feature game with Penn State but I don't make their schedule. That's directly on the coach.

David (Indiana)

What is your take on the Arkansas vs Georgia ?

Beano Cook
  (3:29 PM)

Arkansas as a good shot and it's a big game. They have Alabama next week so my advice to them is to win this game against the Bulldogs. Arkansas has two tough games in Alabama and Auburn. Come to think of it, they only have four road games and three of them are tough ones.

Matt (Lincoln)

In your opinion who is faster Denard Robinson or Taylor Martinez?

Beano Cook
  (3:29 PM)

I have no idea.

Steve (OH)

Another player arrested at Florida. That makes 30 in 4 years. is Urban losing control?

Beano Cook
  (3:31 PM)

I admit, that's a large amount. It's a different world for football coaches than what it used to be. It's a lot tougher to get these players to behave then it was 40 years ago.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Hi Beano, does OU's DeMarco Murray have a legitimate shot at the Heisman Trophy if he stays healthy?

Beano Cook
  (3:32 PM)

He probably does but I can't answer that question. It's the second week of the season and there are a number of players that have a shot. See me at the end of October and I'll be able to answer that question.

Roman (Pullman)

Beano, will my Cougars ever figure it out? Does the program have any hope?

Beano Cook
  (3:33 PM)

I won't say you don't have hope but it will be a tough task to make Washington State competitive in the Pac-12.

K (Bos)

If those are the best matchups, why in the world is Gameday at a crappy Auburn/Clemson game?

Beano Cook
  (3:35 PM)

Number one, it's not a crappy game. GameDay decided to go there. Somebody asked me what my three top games are and I gave it to them. Don't knock GameDay. It's a successful program with good people working on it.

Bryant (Los Angeles)

Who wins between the Hogs and Dawgs in Athens?

Beano Cook
  (3:36 PM)

Arkansas is a slight underdog and it won't surprise me if the Hogs beat the Dogs even with the Dogs having home field advantage.

Lionel (Virginia Beach)

Is Florida on upset alert this weekend?

Beano Cook
  (3:38 PM)

Anything is possible but I'd be surprised if Tennessee won. But like Chris Berman says "that's why they play the game."

Hank Hill (Arlen, TX)

Any chance the Pac-10 goes after Houston, Rice, SMU, and TCU to get the Dallas and Houston TV markets?

Beano Cook
  (3:39 PM)

I think the Pac-12 has there twelve teames and I don't think they will go for any more.

Robbi (Clinton, Ky)

This isn't a question, but I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy listening to you. Thanks!

Beano Cook
  (3:40 PM)

I appreciate the comment but a lot of people would disagree with you.

Keith (Phoenix)

Does Dennis Erickson at ASU have it left in him to take the Sun Devils to the top like he did at Miami, etc.?

Beano Cook
  (3:41 PM)

It's going to be tough. He's one coach on the hot seat this year. he has a tough game at Wisconsin this week and they still has nine conference games to play.

James (Omaha)

Who wins Saturday, Nebraska or Washington?

Beano Cook
  (3:41 PM)

I will tell you at the end of this chat.

Andrew (Huntsville)

How good of chance does bama have to repeat this yr

Beano Cook
  (3:43 PM)

It's awful tough to repeat but Bama is a great team. There biggest problem is the SEC is so tough. If they go undefeated, they play for the national title and if they lose one game they still might play for the national title.

Steve (Tampa)

The ACC looks just plain awful. Who's your pick to straighten it out and get to the Orange Bowl?

Beano Cook
  (3:45 PM)

Well Steve, that's a pretty good question. If I had two team to play for the title, I pick Miami and Florida State with Clemson having a good shot. Playing in the Orange Bowl, I'll go with Miami.

Bill Stewart ((Morgantown, WV))

What would the old gold and blue faithful done to me if I had lost the Marshall game?

Beano Cook
  (3:46 PM)

If they would have loss to Marshall, that would mean trouble for their coaching staff but they pulled it out a won.

Brett (Columbus)

Admit it...Bobby Bowden would have won that game @ Oklahoma

Beano Cook
  (3:47 PM)

I doubt it. Just one of those days when everything went right for Oklahoma and everything went wrong for FSU.

Matt (MA)

Beano, will we ever see you on TV again? Really miss your segments.

Beano Cook
  (3:47 PM)

Every Tuesday at 4:30, I'm on SportsCenter.

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

Do you like the BCS?

Beano Cook
  (3:48 PM)

My point is, all the BCS ever said is they would get No.1 to play No. 2. It's better than what we used to have. If we have four teams playing, it would solve a lot of problems.

KP (San Francisco)

Giants/Dodgers tonight...who ya got??

Beano Cook
  (3:50 PM)

I have absolutely no interest. If they played that game in my bedroom, I would sleep in my kitchen. It's football season, who cares about baseball? Baseball isn't a national pastime, it's a national bore.

JP (Portland, OR)

Will Bobby Petrino be arrested for abandonment when he reaches the Atlanta airport on his first return to town since he fled?

Beano Cook
  (3:50 PM)

(Laughing) I don't think so.

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

since last weekend was supposed to be great, but was a let down, I bet this weekend has at least one upset. mark it

Beano Cook
  (3:52 PM)

Well we had an upset last week, Michigan over ND. Granted the other games weren't that game. Every Saturday in college football something happens and this weekend won't be any different.

Ryan (Medford, OR)

Beano, What are your thoughts on Oregon? DO they have a chance to go all the way? Contenders or Pretenders?

Beano Cook
  (3:53 PM)

Oregon is a strong contender for the title game.

Mike (Miami)

Whos is the top team in the state of florida?

Beano Cook
  (3:53 PM)

Florida is right now.

Hayden (Logan, Utah)

Has money tarnished NCAAFB from what it used to be? Seems like back in the day, it was less about power conferences and $$

Beano Cook
  (3:55 PM)

College football is strictly about money, it's a business. I mean, it's always been a business but not the way it is today. You statement about the power conference is on the money. The NCAA is all about money, that's why they keep expanding the NCAA tournament.

Jake (Reno)

Beano, what's your take on the Cal/Nevada game Friday night? Is this Kaepernicks chance to really shine on the national stage and get some recognition?

Beano Cook
  (3:56 PM)

Excellent game. Nevada was a excellent chance to win but I don't know if they will though. It's a interesting game and I'm looking forward to watching it.

Beano Cook
  (3:59 PM)

My pick is in ...Washington 31-Nebraska 27. I don't have much faith is my picks after last week but I'm going to continue to pick and hopefully I'll get better. Enjoy footbll Saturday and I'll be back next Wednesday!
