What's up, everybody? Coming to you this week from an undisclosed coffee shop somewhere in the Dallas metroplex. Please don't try to find me.
Whats the most overlooked story in the big 12 right now?
Baylor quietly beating the pants off a couple teams and looking pretty good while they do it.
Which Oklahoma team shows up on Saturday against a strong looking Air Force team? Any chances for an upset?
There's definitely a chance for an upset, Oklahoma's lost to two Mountain West teams recently, and their last home loss came to TCU. Air Force is capable of beating Oklahoma. I just don't think they will this weekend.
It appears that Zac Lee has fallen off the map at quarterback for Nebraska. Did him not playing Spring ball hurt him this much or has Nebraska just gone with a different offense?
It's a little of both. I really feel like he'd still be the starter if he hadn't had to sit out the spring, but at the same time, it's tough to keep a guy like Taylor Martinez off the bench. Lee ran the zone read a little bit last year, but clearly, Nebraska doesn't have anyone who can run it as well as Martinez. I can't wait to see what he looks like against defenses who can compete with him. I've really got no idea what'll happen.
Just wanted to say thank you to Bo for saying the crowd noise will not be a factor at Husky Stadium this week.
Fightin' words? Do coaches have to make sure not to provide fans with bulletin board material these days? Is there a fan bulletin board? All good questions.
Any chance Baylor upsets TCU?
Will we know more about Texas or Nebraska after this week?
Texas. But a lot about Nebraska. Specifically at QB and in the secondary.
I'm trying to figure out if Husker fans are more in love than Taylor Martinez than Husky fans are with Jake Locker... Thoughts? Since you save your prediction for the column, what's the HALFTIME score of that game going to be?
I'll save the prediction, but there's definitely a lot of love for both guys in a lot of places these days. I'll say Locker, though.
David, my Okie St. Cowboys didn't look good aganist the men of Troy. Do you think this is a sign of things to come or was it just a result of the turnovers?
Well, they definitely have to clean it up, but I wouldn't worry about it. Oklahoma State's a pretty good team, but there are a lot of good teams in the South. If they keep turning it over like they did on Saturday, they'll be near the bottom of that second tier of Big 12 South teams that's pretty fluid right now.
now that a couple weeks have passed, has any team in the big 12 south convinced you that they are a solid #3 behind texas and ou? or will it take some conference games against legit competition?
Nah, all those teams are close. A&M has the most talent of any of those teams, but they have to prove they can turn that talent into wins. I've got them as my No. 3 right now, but Oklahoma State can change that on their Thursday nighter against the Ags in Stillwater. I can't wait for that game.
Baylor has been falling asleep in the 2nd half of the first two games. Do you think they are capable of changing that against TCU?
It'll be hard to sleep through some of the hits the Horned Frogs will bring at them in Fort Worth. That's a solid defense.
How potentially dangerous are the San Diego State Aztecs coming into Faurot this weekend?
They've put up some good offensive numbers against some bad teams, but if Missouri struggles like they did against Bowling Green last year, it doesn't bode well for its future. If the Tigers want to prove they belong in the polls, they should win easily.
Ready to kick Kansas out of the conference for ruining your perfect record again? I swear these guys have some vendetta against you.
No kidding. I've got about a 15 percent chance of picking correctly this week.
22-0 in the rest of the league. 0-2 with Kansas.
David...what do you take from OU's game with FSU this past weekend? Are they that good, or is FSU that bad??
Oklahoma has shown they can be that good in Norman, but they've got to take it on the road. Maybe they can this year. They didn't last year. I don't think Florida State is that overrated, but Owen Field is a tough place to play. I kept the Seminoles in my poll this week. Ponder took a beating, but he's still a great quarterback. Just not a Heisman candidate anymore.
Christine Michael has looked great. How do you expect him to fare once conference games begin?
Still very well. I pegged him for 1,200 yards this year over the offseason.
Does the TX vs TTech game on Saturday present more of a problem for TX because it is at night? Who wins that game david?
It's not a big deal for the players, but it is for the fans. A stadium at 7 p.m. is going to be louder than one at 11 a.m. That's just science. And maybe some trigonometry.
So, if the longhorns survive this four game stretch, do they win it all???
Might have to see the Huskers again in Dallas in December. I wouldn't bet on a Texas sweep.
What do you make of Boise State refusing Nebraska's offer for a series? It seems like they are begging for bread and once they get it they throw it back because it isn't bruschetta.
Nobody's at fault. It's a lot of moving parts.
Quick shout out
Dave- what are the chances that Texas Tech beats Texas?
Good, but if it's close, I'm taking Texas. Tech has to jump on them early, 14-0 or something, and force Gilbert to throw the ball more than the Longhorns gameplanned for. The Red Raiders secondary is young, but they've got a lot of talent and a great pass rush up front. If Texas can keep the offense on cruise control, their secondary will make big plays down the stretch against Potts to leave Lubbock with the win.
who's your under the radar mvp of the first two weeks?
James Sims, RB, Kansas.
What is the situation with Ronnell 'The Hammer' Lewis? Is Oklahoma going to play him at DE all year or is he going back to his LB spot?
Looks like he's going to DE. He's got a lot of talent. He'll be a factor wherever they put him, but Oklahoma has a little more depth at LB than they do at defensive end.
Plus, I'm not sure Frank Alexander is 100 percent just yet.
If I wanted to come your house and PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE for not putting me at the top of your Heisman ranking, what address would I go to?
That information is confidential.
In 3 years, is Taylor Martinez the best QB in the Big 12?
Doubtful. But maybe the Big Ten.
The big 12 freshman players u have been most impressed with so far
Taylor Martinez and Jordan Webb.
What is your stance on the big discussion Sooners or Brave at then end of the National Anthem?
It's a losing battle for those trying to stop it, but the Sooners at the end is pretty classless. Too many fans disagree about the fundamental reason why they should stop--that it disrespects veterans. But it looks bad, especially to nonconference teams visiting Owen Field. The same goes for Missouri and Kansas fans yelling "Chiefs!" at the end.
Do you think Texas is overrated at ~5 in the polls?
Maybe a little bit, but if they win by double digits at Tech, they'll shut most people up about it.
Add freshman - Jeffcoat and Davis of Texas
Yeah, those two have been outstanding, especially Davis this past week. Texas doesn't need Jeffcoat to be great--they're very good at DE already. They need Davis badly.
What am I to make of KU? Are they back, or is GT just that bad?
Kansas was a different team against GT. The key is keeping is going and taking it on the road.
Who's your personal favorite team? Just wondering because all these homer comments are getting tiresome.
Ha, you're telling me. I really don't have one. The media thinks differently than fans do. I never really got into Missouri football during school, and I lived in Oklahoma for all of nine months. I grew up in Arkansas, but I've seen probably three Arkansas games in two years and haven't been to a game there in about 5-6 years.
If Baylor pulls an upset over TCU this weekend would that squeak them into the top 25?
It very well could.
will you ever make it up north to see any games?
Eventually. Pretty slim pickins up there for nonconference games so far.
Is there a better rushing attack in the Big 12 then Nebraska right now?
Statistically, I don't think there is. But they've got some big time big-play threats. Martinez has completely changed that offense's perception--and reality.
Did you read the Wilbon article about Green at Georgia and the hypocrisy that is the NCAA, if so what did you think about it?
I read a lot about it, but this is what you sign up for when you sign a letter of intent. Sure, it's not fair when you say I can't make money off myself, but you can. But like I said, it's also what you sign up for. Dumb move on both sides.
Iowa State vs. Kansas State Saturday. Does K-State have a chance if Daniel Thomas gets shut down?
They'll have a chance, but if Thomas doesn't top 100 yards, I'll take the Cyclones. The catch is, Iowa State has been getting run over by backs that aren't in Thomas' league. Don't expect the Cyclones to get back in the top 100 in rush defense this week.
A Seattle paper claims Taylor Martinez isn't any faster than Jake Locker OR UW's 2nd string QB. Where can I get the kind of drugs necessary to make that statement make sense?
Not New Hampshire, I guess. And they're completely wrong.
Hey DT you gotta run past me before you even think Heisman!
Oh, SNAP! He went there!
Who is better right now, Gomes or Crick? Both looking stellar.
Crick can have more influence on completely throwing an offense out of sync both in the passing game and the running game. Gomes is looking like a big play guy and a sure tackler. Very different. Both very effective.
How would you rate Gilbert's play thus far?
He's done what he's been asked to do. The no interceptions is very encouraging. I don't care who you're playing against, for a first-year starter, that's impressive. Obviously, he'll be tested this weekend. I'm excited to see how he responds the first time he's given time to prepare for the big stage.
Which FCS team upsets an FBS team this week, Ubben?
Louisville over Oregon State.
Do you think the Big 12 will take on two more teams?? if so When? Who?
No. Never. No one.
Louisville's been in the Big East for like 5 years...
Which game prediction are you going to get on the nose again this week? You are two for two so far, that's pretty impressive.
I'd be surprised if I don't pick every game on the button this week.
Where would you rank the Aggies' Defense in the national picture after the first two outings? Certainly they're out of the cellar...
Looking pretty good through two games, but nobody cares what they can do against Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana Tech. One more reason why that Oklahoma State game is looking huge. We'll know a lot about both teams after that game.
Why would Texas and OU want two additional teams that they would have to share the revenue with? That makes no sense.
And there's nobody that looks like a reasonable candidate who could bring in enough revenue to warrant membership. I've said this before, and I'll say it again: Competition is not the main issue here. If it was, TCU and Houston would probably already be in the Big 12.
Don't get Taylor Martinez sensation...he had a great game against a terrible WKU team...do you dig?
There's been plenty of teams playing cupcakes through two weeks. Only six guys in college football have rushed for more yards than him. And he's averaging like 13 yards a carry. That's pretty good. You dig?
David I have a question concerning Heisman winners. It is obvious that winning is important in how the Heisman is chosen, but then the question of whether the Heisman is actually given to the best player in the country comes into play. From the sound of your comments and generally everyone's at ESPN the Heisman goes to the best player on the best team, who may not be the best player. So could the Heisman lose some of its worth and prestige if it no longer picks the best player in the country? (Prime example last year with Ndamukang Suh.)sorry about the book!
I'd argue the Heisman has lost some legitimacy of late, but not it's prestige. It's still a pretty elite fraternity. More often than not, the best player in the country is on a top 10 team. Suh's position had more to do with him not winning than anything Nebraska did as a team.
Ha. I just saw The Warriors for the first time the other day. I felt very proud of finally figuring out where that came from. I always thought it was just from that 2Pac video.
I love the talk that Baylor may beat TCU...that will make TCU's stomping of them that much sweeter. They are not 21 point favorites for nothing.
Maybe so. But I think it'll be a pretty low-scoring game. I don't see TCU scoring over 30.
Heres a fact for you David, Mack Brown is 3-3 since coaching the Longhorns when they are in Lubbock, all im saying, don't be surprised if the Bermuda Triangle proves once again that weird things happen there.
Oh yeah, I'm well aware of the UT history there. I'm really torn on this game. We'll see how I pick it on Thursday.
You think NU is better then KSU in the ground game ? wow
It's close. But Nebraska's got three guys who are big play threats. K-State has a workhorse who is somewhat of a deep threat and a guy in William Powell that's pretty unproven.
OU fans saying sooners in absolutely no way is disrespectful. I am a VET, and It's the NATIONAL Anthem not the VETERENS anthem. Could we please talk to some other vets and ask their oppinion before we call anybody classless.
Exactly. On the Home of the Sooners issue, this is why it'll never end. There are plenty of veterans who feel the way you do, Donnie. Plenty of fans, too. Even though there are a lot of fans and veterans who feel the complete opposite, too.
And I don't see Baylor scoring 10.
david ubben for heisman
Now that I can get behind.
KU is a 5.5 point underdog to Southern Miss. Can this young KU team get it done on the road this week? Also, what do you think of QB Jordan Webb and the spread O they ran against GT? Thanks.
Webb looked really, really good. He's got some targets in Patterson, McDougald and Wilson, even if none of those guys are elite talents. He's got to keep playing within himself and make the safe throws. The defense has looked great both weeks, he's just got to make sure he doesn't take the game out of their hands with turnovers.
You still think Jerrod Johnson has any chance of winning a heisman?
Ask me again in November. That's when he'll pick up steam.
A couple more questions before I head out.
Can Murry win the Heisman with rotating good and bad games
Saturday wasn't really a bad game. FSU was keyed up on stopping the run before the pass, and Oklahoma didn't force the issue. They put the game in Landry's hands and he delivered. Murray only had 51 yards rushing, but he caught four balls for 52 yards. 103 yards of offense against a ranked team isn't a bad day.
best secondary in big 12?
Looks like Nebraska's outperforming Texas pretty solidly to this point. They'll both get huge tests this week. Ask me again next week.
Thanks for the questions, everybody. Good chat today. See you all again next week.
