Hi and welcome! Let's get started for another live chat.
How does Michigan State gain twice as many votes as Nevada (at least) in each poll for beating Notre Dame on a fake field goal in OT while Nevada whipped a top 25 team by 3 touchdowns?
Sammy, I am not a poll voter -- I do not have Michigan State in my Top 25 power rankings if it makes you feel better. I do not have Nevada in there at this time, either, mostly because I think Fresno State is slightly better. It really is close between those 2 teams, in my opinion. HOWEVER, I do give Nevada a tremendous amount of respect right now for the way it was able to dominate California. Colin Kaepernick should be a household name by now.
Show some love for my Temple Owls!!!
We will later this week, Steve, so stay tuned! Huge game vs. Penn State this weekend, we will see if they can be competitive. The games haven't been close, but the win over Connecticut could do something for confidence.
I've had a bad weekend Andrea. I only care about UNC and Notre Dame sports when it comes to college and I'm from MA so the Pats let me down as well...... give me something to look forward to for UNC and or ND this week.
Oh, Dave. I hope you are staying away from sharp objects ;) Both teams have been competitive, so there is that. Notre Dame is a few plays away from being 3-0, so there is that. I am not sure the Irish can beat Stanford -- the Cardinal have looked awfully good. But UNC can definitely beat Rutgers. From what I have seen of the Scarlet Knights, they haven't looked overly impressive and probably should have lost to FIU.
Is it me or is TCU and the MWC getting too much credit? People claim the MWC is better than the WAC. But where is the evidence? Look at the WAC right now. Nevada is 3-0 yet unranked somehow after wiping the field with Cal and MWC foe Colorado State. Fresno State has already defeated last year's Big East champ, Cincinnati, and Utah State took Oklahoma to within 7 (and, yes, I know Air Force played them to within 3). Boise just routed Wyoming by 45 and did beat Virginia Tech (no FCS schools on Boise's schedule by the way). What gives? There is a big difference between perception and reality. Beating bottom feeder Baylor is like TCU beating Virginia last year. BCS conference yes, quality team, not even close.
Don, I think the problem is the perception that the MWC has been historically better. Watch for a column I am doing later today in which I compare the WAC vs. MWC games head-to-head this season. No question the top teams in the WAC have improved, and this is not going to be a cakewalk for Boise State. But I will also say I think Nevada is not getting much credit because a) Colorado State is horrendous and b) not many people had a lot of high expectations for call. That drubbing of Colorado - the Buffaloes are not exactly Ohio State.
Bama vs Ark. Who ya got?
I still have Bama. Arkansas had a great win over Georgia, no question, but Georgia crept back into the game in the fourth quarter when it should have already been decided. I think Alabama can stop Mallett, and I don't know if Arkansas can stop Ingram/Richardson/McElroy and company.
Which game are you most excited for in week 4?
It has to be Boise State vs. Oregon State. Huge game for the Broncos in their quest to remain undefeated. Another great one -- Nevada at BYU. Among the others, Stanford-Notre Dame is going to be great, along with Bama-Arkansas, South Carolina-Auburn and the big Thursday night game between Miami and Pittsburgh.
What a game in Tucson! What do you see down the road for both my Wildcats and a very good Hawkeye team?
I am so glad that turned into a game in the second half. During the live chat, I was afraid we were going to get crickets for the fourth quarter, but the Iowa fans told us to remember that the Hawkeyes are a fourth-quarter team. At the start of the year, I projected Arizona to finish No. 3 in the conference behind USC and Oregon. Now I think we can forget about USC. The Pac-10 is going to come down to Arizona and Oregon. As for Iowa, the running game is a concern and so is the play of the offensive line and secondary. If those areas aren't fixed, Iowa will be in trouble. The bright spot for the Hawkeyes, though -- they play Wisconsin and Ohio State at home.
Boise beat TCU last year and Boise returns everyone. Is TCU really as good as Boise State?
Not right now. I still have Boise State on top of the power rankings. But I have been impressed with TCU for a number of reasons. Two of its first three games have come against AQ opponents, and they won both. TCU had to replace more than 1 starter on defense this year, and so far that has worked out well. The D is ranked near the top of the NCAA statistics once again (No. 4 as it stands now). That Fiesta Bowl wasn't exactly a blowout, either. I think both teams are very, very close.
Do you think that after learning the types of tweets that Jacory Harris received after the OSU game, this is perhaps a major reason for the ban, and Shannon just didnt want to put Harris in an awkward position bringing it up first?
Nathan, It is possible. I know Miami said that wasn't a factor. I think it was probably a combination of things. Jacory was tweeting several hours before the Ohio State game, and I can imagine that didn't go over very well with the head coach. Randy Shannon is not one for distractions. He was never on Twitter. And he isn't the first coach to ban it, either. Boise State doesn't allow its players on there. Shannon just wants to keep his players focused.
Do you think my Mountaineers can pull off a big upset this weekend in Death Valley??
It's certainly possible. LSU hasn't exactly looked unbeatable this year. But then again, the Big East has looked very beatable in its conference games. I'm sticking with LSU in this one.
Hey Andrea, what do I have to do to become the first Freshman to ever win the Heisman?
Go undefeated and throw for 300 yards and 4 TDs in every game. You have to get people think of Nebraska's offense before its defense, too.
Who has the best shot at beating Alabama in the SEC? Outside the SEC?
Arkansas has a shot this weekend, though I still think Auburn wins. I don't know how much Florida will be able to do in Tuscaloosa. The big games I have questions about -- at South Carolina on Oct. 9, at LSU on Nov. 6 and Auburn Nov. 26. I know LSU hasn't looked great but playing in Baton Rouge is always difficult. Auburn nearly beat Alabama last year. If Marcus Lattimore keeps playing as well as he has, he could give the Tide fits.
I think Nevada will prove in the next few weeks it belongs in the Top 15-20, but I also get the feeling that an undefeated Boise will still be tagged with the "they only beat a down Va Tech and Oregon St. this year" label. Shame, looks like this is an "up" year for the WAC, although that is meaningless to the rest of the country.
I agree with you. This definitely looks like an up year for the WAC. If Nevada beats BYU on the road this weekend, that would be another win for the conference over the Mountain West. Its bottom teams aren't as bad as New Mexico or Colorado State, either.
Andrea, what do you think about Nebraska's case as a legitimate National Title contender after their trouncing of Washington on Saturday?
I think Nebraska had a case before that win, so its stronger now. I was thisclose to putting the Huskers in the championship game before the season starter. Martinez has been impressive. My only caveat is this -- Washington hasn't looked very good. That loss to start the season at BYU is looking worse and worse as the weeks go on. Where is the improvement we were supposed to see from the Huskies and Jake Locker? This may turn out to be another losing season, which would diminish how big this win is for Nebraska come the end of the year.
Hi AA! Whxih QB turned in a better performance this past weeked? Andrew Luck or Brian Mallet?
Hi Coach! I think you mean Ryan ;) I know Andrew Luck had an awesome day against Wake Forest, but I am going to go with Mallett here. He was on the road and played a great game. After Georgia tied it up, he kept his poise and threw the game-winning score. Georgia is a better team than Wake Forest, so to me his day was more impressive given the quality of competition, being on the road and the comeback.
Re: WAC vs MWC: Shouldn't the MWC be happy that Nevada and Fresno State are starting to raise their profiles on the national stage? Those two schools are going to be joining the MWC soon enough...
Not sure if it should be happy at the expense of what could happen to TCU in the BCS standings. An improved WAC means the chances of TCU leapfrogging Boise State should the 2 teams remain undefeated are more unlikely. But for the future, this is no doubt a move that strengthens the conference as it hopes for that AQ bid. Nevada and Fresno State need to have solid Top 25 rankings this season in order to help in that quest.
Am I correct in that Keenum's college career is over? I think he redshirted in 2006, so he wouldn't get a sixth year right?
Matt, there is an outside shot he can appeal for a sixth year of eligibility based on the injury. The normal threshold is if an athlete plays in less than 20 percent of the snaps then there could be a case for the NCAA to side in their favor. Since he only played the first half in the opener and was injured in the next two games, he did not play in 20 percent of those snaps. The NCAA has been hit or miss when giving out another year of eligibility and look at each case individually. Coach Kevin Sumlin said yesterday it was too early in the process to decide whether Houston would go that route.
Andrea! I think you forgot Stanford in your Pac-10 title talk there! Dont' forget them!
Scott, I have not forgotten about Stanford. I definitely have them right there in the mix. The next 3 games are a critical stretch for the Cardinal -- at Notre Dame, at Oregon and USC. Looking forward to seeing how they fare in those games. Maybe I wasn't as impressed as everyone else with the huge win over Wake. The Demon Deacons are not very good, and neither is the ACC.
Why do you think that Pac-10 will come down to Arizona and Oregon? Doesn't Stanford have a chance of competing -- they did beat Oregon last year.
Stanford absolutely has a chance. I just like the Arizona D better at this point.
With Fresno St being Ole Miss and Nevada beating BYU next week, is it really true that the Wac will have 3 Top 25 Teams???
I can't see the future, Kenrick! But there is a chance. It is probably more likely in the AP poll. Fresno State didn't receive as many votes from the coaches.
Boise State's win over Virginia Tech, er, Oregon State will mean nothing, because Oregon State, er Virginia Tech will be a 1-2 team after that, which means even if Oregon State, er, Virginia Tech wins their conference, the win isn't as meaningful as Florida's victory over a fast and athletic South Florida (#2 for a week in 2008!) squad.
Is that right, Voters? USF is 1-1 last I checked. What if the Bulls go 5-7 and Oregon State and Virginia Tech win their conferences? We are going on body of work through the season, not through 3 games.
Do you think With the lose to Boise State, it took alot out of Virginia Tech and thats why they lost to James Madison?
Steve, I think it was an emotionally deflating loss and a very, very short week to prepare. Those two factors must have contributed to the way the Hokies played. Very bad scheduling move to go from such a high profile game and then play 5 days later against a I-AA opponent. It was probably hard to get up for that game.
Hi Andrea, I know the Beavers can beat Boise State... however I've been to the last 2 games on the 'Blue' and I hate it that place. Why do I have a really bad feeling about the Broncos? I feel like they are just chomping at the big for this game?
I think Boise State is chomping at the bit for every game, given the fact it must prove itself every week. This is after all the last game on its schedule for the rest of the year. Oh wait, it's not? Could have sworn it was.
New Mexico State is struggling once again. When will they finally turn the corner?
I think they have to make a coaching change, plain and simple. The team has shown no improvement at all under Mike Locksley. In fact, the team looks like it has regressed.
Kentucky have any chance against Florida or have they been a pretender from the gte go? They do look very good offensively but some real questions on defense. My take is KY is susceptible to whichever they don't key on...If they play to stop run, the back door for long pass gains is available and vice-versa. Your thoughts?
The way Florida has played, I think anybody has a chance. But history has proven the Wildcats haven't been very competitive recently (aside from 2007). Kentucky has scored 12 points in the last two games, and this Florida defense is looking outstanding so far.
Mark, Why isn't Colin Kapernick out of Nevada getting any Heisman consideration. His stats are some of the best in the nation (including being better than Robinson). The whole schedule argument is null at this point because outside of Kellen moore, and maybe Mallet, none of the other scheduales have been more difficult. Bottom line is when does Colin Kapernick get some respect?
Can I still answer this even though you meant it for Mark? Again, I think it is the perception. I have had him listed on my non-AQ Heisman watch from the start of the year. If he has a big game against BYU, then maybe that will change. But he also will get criticized for being a "system quarterback." It will be hard for him to shake that label.
How many believer are the Broncos gonna make after the Oregon State game?
I think the answer there is ... five? Don't think very many, Drew.
How did SDSU lose that game on Saturday? Aztec curse? Looks like Ronnie Hillman is the real deal!
Chris, What a heartbreaker for San Diego State. I had that game really close and though the Aztecs could pull off the win. Hillman has been absolutely huge, and as good as advertised. This was a team that could barely run 3 yards last year. Now with him, the running game is working beautifully, and that has obviously helped Lindley out tremendously. I think this is a bowl team.
Does Boston College get into a Bowl game this year
Yes. I have them ranked in my power rankings. I might be the only one. I have to double check.
Should I be impressed by Stanford's defense shutting down UCLA and Wake Forest? Will they be able to slow down Dayne Crist and the Irish?
Nick, That is why I said earlier I thought the Pac-10 would come down to Zona vs. Oregon. Stanford is definitely in the mix, no question about it, but Stanford should have won those 2 games. This 3 game stretch is the big test.
Over/Under 5 years before a team from the non-automatic conferences win the National Championship.
Tough one. I am going to hedge here. I have Boise State in the national championship game, but that is a huge guess. I am not sure if the Broncos are going to able to leap into the Top 2. Also, TCU and Boise State have such senior-laden teams, next season could be a rebuilding year. Utah is good this year, could be even better next year. If it doesn't happen this year, not sure when it will.
What will it take to get 3 top 25 Wac Schools?
Seeing other AQ teams to lose, especially those at the bottom of the rankings.
In your bowl predictions, you have Boise State playing for the National Championship. That has to mean that at some point you're expecting Bama to lose. But, I would argue that a 1-loss Bama gets in over an undefeated Boise State. Are you expecting Bama to have 2 loses then?
Chris, that is a great question and one I have gone back and forth trying to figure out. Through the first 3 games, Alabama looks really unbeatable, but there is a really tough SEC stretch ahead. I think a lot of those top teams could end up with 2 losses, which is why I have Boise State in the national championship game. I just think this season could devolve into chaos. That is how I saw the season playing out before the games started. I am going to stick with that until this 3 game stretch for Bama, at Arkansas, UF and then at South Carolina.
I am a big fan of anarchy. How does an undefeated Oregon, Nebraska, BSU, TCU, Ohio State, and Alabama sound to you? Wouldn't that just be more fun to watch the teams rip each other apart?
If there was a playoff, it would be a dream come true.
Do people forget that Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada will be in the MWC next year. So all the credit those teams do go to the MWC for BCS AQ qualification. Their success is actually good for the MWC.
Chris, Sure it's good going forward, but not this year when TCU is trying to get into the national championship game. Gotta think about this season first.
being a bama born & bred die hard.. honestly i think S.C. having finally found balance with a pure running back, gamecocks give us the best game... sry auburn but u are one dimensional still. if u stop cam newton running, u win, period.. cam is there ONLY run threat, so u know what bama will do on D :) "gettem marcel".. rofl
Buddy, I am really excited for this game. But first, I want to see how South Carolina handles Auburn this week. I know the Tigers look one-dimensional, but you can be sure they will be up for the Bama game.
What if I run for 150 and throw for 150, and my team keeps putting up 300 yards on the ground, each game?
Taylor, you are persistent my friend! Let's just see how the season plays out. We are only in Week 4!
Would it be safe to say that Ohio State is the front runner in the big ten to make it to the national champoinship game
Yes. I have Ohio State in the national championship game.
Ohio State, Nebraska/Oklahoma, SEC team other than Alabama, & Boise go undeaten......Which fan bases end up on suicide watch?
Holy guacamole, Rhett. If those 5 teams go undefeated, forget suicide watch, I hope those fans start holding protests in Washington, D.C. and start screaming PLAYOFF!! until somebody listens.
OK guys, thanks for all your great questions. We will see you hear again next week!Andrea
