Chat with Ryan McGee

What's up my New England maple syrup covered brothers & sisters!

Ryan McGee
  (2:03 PM)

Welcome to a special banzai lap half-hour edition of the Monday Motorsports Block Party. We don't have much time...so to the queries!

Brian (Woodbridge, VA) [via mobile]

Hey Ryan, what's the the more difficult job, being crew cheif for Dale Jr or being head coach for the Dallas Cowboys?

Ryan McGee
  (2:05 PM)

They are very similar. I Lance McGrew's stream of hate mail is every bit as venomous as Wade Phillips's. I wrote that in ESPN The Magazine just last year, that being a Cup crew chief is one the most difficult jobs in all of sports...and being Earnhardt's crew chief is the most difficult gig in racing.

Fred (Maryland)

Has NASCAR ever considered starting all 12 chase racers at the front?

Ryan McGee
  (2:07 PM)

There have been all sort of theories and plans tossed around about how better to split up the Chasers from the non-Chasers. But honestly I think what we have is about as good as we need. Terry Blount wrote a good story just the week where most drivers said they didn't even favor a separate points system.

Ryan McGee
  (2:07 PM)

I would like to see them all qualify at the same time, like they do with the go-or-go-homers.

Dave (Boston)

Hi Ryan. Great morning to be a Bowyer fan. I have fun riding Jr Nation on the chats, but I was getting a little worried that 33 Nation was going down the same road of frustration with the lack of wins.My question is now that Clint has tasted victory again, do you think he'll take more chances and be a more regular winner because of it?

Ryan McGee
  (2:10 PM)

It is a good day for Bowyer fans. Yes, I think you'll see him get on a little roll here. That always seems to happen when guy finally breaks through for win. But I don't think you'll see him roll the dice like that again. He needed a win to snap the streak and make a jump from the bottom of the Chase to the top. He did that. Now he's a legit title contender, so they can't just throw it around. If he falls off the Chase pace though, all bets are off.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will Danica Patrick race in both the Kobolt Tools 500 at Phoenix & the Ford 400 at Miami-Homestead?

Ryan McGee
  (2:12 PM)

The Cup races? No. I once thought she might be in a JR Motorsports car at Homestead, but not anymore. If anything, she's going the other way. They just announced she's running in the K&N East Series race at Dover.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Hey Ryan, was that more of the entertaining Loudon races we've seen in a LONG while? I thought the racing was great.

Ryan McGee
  (2:13 PM)

It was great. And I think that guys started racing so hard so early that it caught a lot of people, inclding some of the drivers themselves, off guard. The Chase obviously had something to with that sense of urgency, but I think the shorter, 300-mile format did too. I am a big fan of shorter races. Did we really miss 100 or 200 more laps on Sunday? I sure didn't.

Andrew (Kettering Ohio)

Will everyone act like Jr. is back because of 1 top 5?

Ryan McGee
  (2:15 PM)

Let's just let them enjoy it. It's been a loooooong time. His PR rep, Mike Davis a had a great Tweet this morning (paraphrasing from memory): Everything sure does feel better after a top five. (My daughter) ate all her breakfast, which she never does. I think I'll play the lottery on the way into the office.

Ron (Green River, WY)

Any news on Justin Allgaier? Do you think JGR will try and sign him?

Ryan McGee
  (2:16 PM)

The latest is that Penske says he can shop around for jobs. I think JGR will be in the mix, as will just about everyone. If I'm a car owner I am signing him today. I've loved that kid ever since I first saw him in an ARCA ride...which he also owned.

Todd (Ga)

Hey Ryan. You know everyone piled on Dale Jr. about how bad that team is running but, Mark Martin and that 5 team seems to be running equally as bad if not worse. What are your thoughts on the 5 and 88 team as a whole?

Ryan McGee
  (2:18 PM)

I'll go you one better than that, Todd. I think the entire Hendrick organization has been off this year. Jimmie had his win streak in the spring, but his numbers since July have been brutal. And Gordon has punched out top tens like an assembly line, but still hasn't won.

TG (PA)

Is Newton wandering around looking hungry? Did he survive the first day of his Mark Martin work out routine?

Ryan McGee
  (2:19 PM)

It has not gone well. He went to make his first Mark Martin smoothie thingy this morning and broke his blender, so he had to stop and buy one on the way to the gym. Doh!

Emily (NJ)

Ryan, considering how terrible Carl runs at Loudon, is coming out of there with an almost top 10 like a victory for his team?

Ryan McGee
  (2:19 PM)

No doubt about it. And he's stone-cold cash money at Dover, where he has eight top-10s and an average finish of 7.9 in 12 starts.

Tony Stewart (via mobile)

I should've never admitted that I can't grill. See what happened? I ran out of gas! Grill karma is terrible...

Ryan McGee
  (2:20 PM)

I say you stop by Marcos Ambrose's hauler and pick up some charcoal.

Patrick (1 Mile From BMS, Bristol, TN)

Ryan......Call me biased but doesnt NASCAR need to move things around and get some different tracks in The Chase...Bristol perhaps?

Ryan McGee
  (2:21 PM)

Yes. And I think that's coming. There are just so many moving parts when it comes to shuffling race dates you really have to start several years in advance. It's coming...it just might take a couple more years.

Cale (Boston)

I'm a Stewart fan...do I still have something to root for or am I back to "Anybody But Jimmie" for the rest of the Chase?

Ryan McGee
  (2:23 PM)

I think you're still good. For now anyway. I still say you get one mulligan in the Chase. Smoke, Jimmie, and Kenseth have all had theirs now. One more and then you can start finding someone else to root for this fall.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Hi Ryan, if a first timer like Bowyer wins the championship could you see them as being extra popular for unseating the 48?

Ryan McGee
  (2:25 PM)

I think anyone who wins this year not named Jimmie will likely get more cheers than he normally would because it's someone new. Unless its Kyle Busch. I'm pretty sure he gets booed at the grocery store.

Daniel (VALDOSTA, Ga.)

Hey Ryan, do you think the 48 comes back and wins at Dover after a bad run at Loudon? He swept in '09 and would have given Kyle Busch a run for his money in May barring a pit road speeding penalty.

Ryan McGee
  (2:25 PM)

This is a very well-placed race for him, no doubt.

Tracy (CT)

Why on earth would Penske keep Sideways Sammy over Justin?! Why?????

Ryan McGee
  (2:27 PM)

It's purely a sponsorship issue. Verizon is unhappy with the restrictions placed on them by the Sprint exclusivity deal with NASCAR, so they're going to concentrate on Penske's IndyCar program with Will Power. And don't assume that Sam will be back either. They stil need sponsorship for the 77 too.

Irv (Tulsa, OK)

Is every driver who gets passed by Rowdy gonna call Rowdy a dirty driver?

Ryan McGee
  (2:28 PM)

Seems like it, doesn't it? I get it with James Buescher though. A 19-year getting so close to his first win.

Brian (Greenville, NC)

My man Ryan, If you were a driver would you take more money getting into average equipment or take less money getting into great equipment?

Ryan McGee
  (2:28 PM)

Me? I take the good racecar. But I think more drivers than you'd suspect would go with A.

Irv (Tulsa, OK)

What did Scotty Speed have to say after getting dumped by Labonte?

Ryan McGee
  (2:31 PM)

You know I don't know. And I just saw his wife Amanda out at ZMax Dragway here in Charlotte about an hour ago ((bit test session today) and tried to get her attention so I could ask her about it...but her family, the rootin' tootin' Smiths and their NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycles were too loud and she couldn't hear me!

Ryan McGee
  (2:32 PM)

Alright folks...that's it! Holy cow, when you normally do an hour those 30 minutes fly by too fast! See you next week, when I'll be coming to you from the Death Star in Bristol, CT getting ready to do the NASCAR Now roundtable. Until then, tip your waiters and waitresses and enjoy the music of Gwar.
