Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session. Lots happened in a busy Week 2 of fantasy football, and we will discuss it here, along with any fantasy baseball questions you might have... so thanks for showing up and let's get going!

Peter (Atlanta, GA)

Is Jason Snelling now a viable starting fantasy option after his performance yesterday?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

Well, no, not really. I would regard him better than Green Bay's Brandon Jackson, for example, if I thought he would start, but he isn't. Michael Turner had a groin injury Sunday and should be fine for this week. I blogged about this in depth today, but no, I wouldn't spend a high waiver pick on Snelling. He'll probably go back to just a few touches in Week 3.

Raul (SD)

Eric, I'm getting nervous about Jonathan Stewart as a dependable RB2. Carolina has looked putrid. You see any improvement down the line?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Yes, I do. Part of it is the schedule, and clearly Matt Moore is having problems. Now we'll see Jimmy Claussen play. I think DeAngelo Williams will be fine, and Stewart will have enough big games to be worth while. But he's not a safe RB2 for now.

Will (Dallas, TX)

Where do rank Jahvid Best for the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Well, I'm sure the haters won't like this, because they think every huge performance means a player is all of a sudden awesome, but Best isn't in my top 10 going forward. He's a rookie. He has durability issues. His team is bad. Is Best off to a great start.. .absolutely. I'd move him up to the Arian Foster range - remember him, down 162 yards this week! - to 13-17 among RBs.

Tom (NC)

Can we expect more of these fireworks from McNabb or just a one game thing?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Terrific performance, one I didn't expect. Ultimately he didn't get the win, but McNabb can't really be blamed. I'd like to see more before proclaiming McNabb a top 10 QB for the season though.

Joel (Roscommon MI)

What to do with Jamaal Charles ??

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Hold on to him and hope the Chiefs give him more touches. I think it will gradually happen, but it's time we also stop hatin' on Thomas Jones. He was a 1,400-yard back last season. Why can't Jones and Charles each rush for 1,000 yards?

Joel (CT)

Is the Jets D without Revis still an every-week start? They looked pretty good in the 2nd half yesterday.

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Yes, that defense has other playmakers and is very well coaches as well. If I own the Jets defense, even if Revis misses time, I wouldn't panic and look elsewhere. Revis didn't play in the second half Sunday and what did Brady do?

Scott (Teton, ID)

VJax worth grabbing off of the wire?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

I think so, and blogged about it along with saying Favre will be fine, but apparently others disagree. Hey, we are all entitled to our opinions.

Josh (Washington DC)

What to do with Shonn Green?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Nothing. What can you do? He doesn't appear to be a safe starting running back, but that doesn't mean you dump him either. I think Greene will gradually improve, but he is off to a tough start, and Tomlinson looks very good.

ian (tampa, Fl)

What the heck do i do with Caddillac? 40+ carries in two games and like 120 something yards?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

I'd focus on the stranglehold he has on the Tampa Bay running game rather than the unimpressive yardage total. Who thought he'd rush for 1,400 yards? He's their guy, he'll score occasionally, get his thousand yards. Not a starter in fantasy, but bye week fill in.

Eric (Reading, PA)

Which Seattle RB do I want? Perhaps none of them.

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Perhaps you are correct. For now, still Forsett, but I'm not optimistic. Marshawn Lynch would be perfect...ah forget it.

Derek (MN )

What can I get for McFadden right now? Package him with a WR for a top WR or a top TE straight up?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Sure. I would think McFadden has changed minds with his first two games. I don't think he's totally safe yet, not until we see what Michael Bush does, but hey, he has been impressive.

Tom (Richmond)

Chris Johnson had a terrible week. What can we expect from him going forward?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Another 1,500 rushing yards.

Joel (CT)

If you were me, would you trade Brandon jackson and the Chargers D for Ladanian and the Jets D?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Hmmmm...I'd think about it, but ultimately I don't value any defenses all that much, so I'd take the better RB. And while Tomlinson looks good, I'd still take B-Jax.

Sal (Jersey)

Joe Flacco isn't exactely tearing it up right now. Should see what happens against Cleveland or should I start making deals or waiver adds?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Yeah, shocking eh? And everyone loved him as the No. 7 or 8 QB in the preseason. Incredible. I wouldn't cut him. Two road games against tough opponents is tough on most QBs. It will get better.

Mike (NYC)

Sell High on Steve Smith (CAR)? Can he really keep this up with a rookie QB at the helm?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Do you really think a rookie QB can be any worse than Matt Moore was? I don't. Smith can produce with any QB.

Mark (NJ)

After losing Grant last week, Mathews just went down with an injury. I have MJD (struggling) too as well. Only thing I got going for me is McFadden (probably wont last long) and Best. Should I be concerned??

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

I wouldn't worry. You're lucky to have so much depth. Mathews will be fine. MJD is fine. Best is going to be worth using most weeks. And hey, maybe McFadden has emerged.

Kelsey (L.A.)

Is Calvin Johnson still a top 10 WR going forward?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Why not? I don't think Shaun Hill hurt Calvin much Sunday. The Lions will trail a lot, too.

Cutler (Cloud 9)

Am I more viable than Flacco here on out?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

I ranked Cutler eighth before the season and Flacco 12th, so I'm probably not the one to ask. I was writing that all along.

Ron (nyc)

how much concern is there for Brent Celek?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

None. It's two weeks and he'll end up with big numbers. Doesn't even matter who the QB is.

E (Realadelphia)

is Owen Daniels worth trading for? and if so what should I be shopping for him

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

I don't think too many tight ends after the top 3 or 4 are worth dealing for, actually. Daniels should be productive when healthy, but there are others like him statistically out there.

Jason (NC)

Eric what is up with the Dallas running game? I own Barber AND Jones. Going forward what the heck can we expect? I'm trying to unload one but nobody seems interested. Help!

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

I think both Barber and Jones should be owned, but I'm hardly impressed. The thing is, Dallas is likely to start relying on the run more now that they're winless. Don't unload, most people wouldn't give you much for them. Just wait.

RossC (Class)

Tolbert worth dropping someone like FJax or Mason for? . . . obviously it depends on Matthews injury.

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

I wouldn't waste a waiver pick on Tolbert, one because I think Mathews is fine, but also because there's no guarantee he's the starter if Mathews is out. Could be Sproles. Sunday was one game, I doubt if the Chargers knew Mathews was out all week they'd do the same thing. And you have to keep Jackson and Mason around.

Trent (Montgomery, AL)

MIN obviously has serious issues on offense...Favre looks old and now Harvin may be out. Does this hurt AP's value as defenses may start stacking the box with 8 men?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Didn't Peterson have his best season when Tarvaris Jackson was the QB? Are you saying Jackson was better than Favre, or more a threat? I don't see it. Favre and AP will be fine.

Mike (SF)

Down 0-2 and need to turn it around. Hoping the fantasy guru can assist. Flacco or Orton from here on out?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Depends on matchups, really. In a vaccuum I'd rather own Flacco, but Orton is off to a nice start. This week Flacco.

Joel (CT)

Arian foster: over or under 15 tds this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Under. But it would be nice if people stopped thinking I hated the guy. I did rank him just outside my top 10 in Week 2, and might again this week. Based on value, though, and the fact people were comparing him to Chris Johnson, he was and remains an obvious sell high. I'll say 9 scores this season.

JT (Ohio)

Will Kolb materialize into a real player this year, or is M.Vick worth holding onto

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

I think Kolb will be fine, but I know everyone else wants Vick. Andy Reid is the only one who matters though, and he's playing Kolb this week. As for stashing Vick away, depends if you have the room, what your other QBs look like. IF Vick were to start all year, he'd be in my top 10. But he won't.

Arian Foster (Houston, TX)

I ain't sayin you a hater but Chewbacca is a wookie. I rest my case.

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Excellent!

Jake (WSU)

What are your thoughts on Gary Kubiak's last second time out to ice Gano? I liked it only because I had Rackers as my kicker.

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

I am stunned the NFL allows the "last-second" timeout thing to continue and ruin big moments like that...but whatever. Doesn't affect fantasy. Gano needed to make the field goal...then again, I would have let Rackers try the 53-yarder on the first OT drive...

Greg (Cape Cod)

EK, your favorite buy-low guy this week is ____________?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Honestly, I don't look at the next week until this one ends... but glancing at the schedule you want Favre, maybe Camarillo...

Raymond (Tahoe)

Eric, Would you take a high waiver on Snelling if you own Turner? My other backs are Brown, Portis and Forsett...

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Not really. What changed? We knew all along who Turner's handcuff was, and I laughed all last season when people proclaimed it to be Norwood. Never was. I will concede Turner has more potential for injury than other first round RBs, but he's going to be fine with this injury for Week 3.

Mark (State College, PA)

As a Kolb owner, would I be better with Vick as my backup or Matt Ryan? I can trade Vick for Matt Ryan.

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Vick over Ryan, but only if it's for backup purposes. Vick only plays if Kolb fails/gets hurt. And the fact Vick is an Eagle here is irrelevant, really. You only need Ryan if Kolb is bad/hurt. And I think if both Vick and Ryan were starters, Vick would be more valuable.

Joe (Philly)

Do you think Peyton Hillis is worth starting this week over Benson or Ronnie Brown???

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Not a chance. Way too risky for a guy who doesn't get double digit carries. The Browns are ridicul...well, whatever. Odd franchise. Keep owning Hillis and Harrison and Massaquoi, but I wouldn't use them..

Training camp (somewhere horrible)

You're right Favre and Revis.... you don't need me.

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

I personally do not think that has been the problem, but certainly it did not help.

Shannon (Omaha)

Jackson isn't going to cut it in Green Bay, and Kuhn isn't the answer either. Do you think GB is out shopping for a running back, and if so who - (please don't say Lynch)

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

Why can't Jackson cut it? He doesn't have to be Ryan Grant, but what he did Sunday, with receptions and a score, that's enough for them. I don't see the Packers making a big move, and what's really out there? Lynch is just about all.

matt (Woodinville)

If/when Vincent Jackson signs with the Vikings, what is he worth to you? Low-end WR1? Strong WR2?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Probably just outside my top 10... just like Rice was a year ago.

Tom (Anaheim)

EK, Cutler and that new offense is looking pretty good after 2 weeks, that said would you trade Cutler and Knox to an Owner in Chicago for Schaub?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Yeah, I would do that to get Schaub. Cutler is in my top 10, but Schaub is still better. The Bears won't win every week and yes, there will be interceptions.

Jim (Seattle)

Which side would you take and why? Jerome Harrison or Beanie Wells?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

A healthy Beanie would be the easy choice.. but I'm also not assuming Harrison has no value. All it takes is one good game.. which he hasn't had. And Harrison did get enough touches Sunday to have it. Overall, take Wells.

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

spencer (Indy)

speed round: Spiller or M. Bush

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Spiller. Lynch's workload Sunday means absolutely nothing. Was a lost game anyway. Spiller and Jackson will be fine.

merlin (philly)

speed round: Demaryius Thomas or mike sims-walker

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

It's still MSW for now, but I haven't been impressed. Then again, the Jags play the Eagles this week, they've stopped nobody, so look for Sims-Walker to go off. The Broncos have a lot of WR options.

Matt ("Work")

Over the next 48 hours VJack is a member of this ____ team?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Vikings. They're desperate and they know now Berrian can't play.

Moose (rainforest cafe)

speed round: hightower or charles?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Charles. I think he'll be fine, and Hightower will lose reps soon to Beanie.

Ryan (Cheyenne)

Do you still try to sell high on A. Foster if you can keep him for an 11th round pick next year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Nope. I think he'll have a very good season...

Paul (NYC)

Matt Forte has double digit fantasy points for 2 straight weeks. Is he fantasy worthy as a RB1?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

No, I can't go that far yet. I'd like to see Forte have a decent game running the ball... it's all been on receptions. Is he Reggie Bush?

Dan (Chicago)

The NFC East's best RB at season's end will be ________ ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Bradshaw. Over McCoy. Amazing the Cowboys haven't run the ball yet...

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, that is all the time we have for today's spirited chat session. Thank you for the thousands of questions, and sorry if I didn't get to yours. We appreciate you showing up and reading our work, so have a great day and good luck the rest of Week 2. I'll be back chatting on Wednesday, same time! Adios!
