Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat session. You have two new sets of notes to check out from today and yesterday, multiple news stories, a blog and updated divisional and p4p rankings and the updated schedule. So check it all out and we'll get into it on this slow boxing weekend.

Bobby (Louisville, Ky)

Who is now the frontrunner to face Wladimir on Dec. 11?? I wish Adamek would just toss that Vinny Maddalone fight and take that fight! he's the most deserving of the current contenders

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I wouldn't say there is a front runner at the moment. There are several names being tossed around. Mormeck turned it down. Adamek is not ready and has another fight first. Haye is the Ducker. There are other names out there -- Cisora from England, David Tua, James Toney. They've all been mentioned as well.

Phil (buffalo, ny)

any idea who james kirkland will be fighting on november 6th?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

TBA. It won't be anyone too tough. Besides, first James has to be actually released from prison. His due date has already happened, but if you read today's notes you'll know why he has not already been srpung.

jerrell (huntsville,al): [via mobile]

where does the shane mosley-sergio mora fight rank among the worst fights ever?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

It was terrible, but as I have told people, it is not the worst fight I have ever covered because I covered a lot of John Ruiz fights over the years.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Hey Dan, More impressive performance last weekend: De Leon, Ortiz or Alvarez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

They all turned in very good performances but I have to say I was most impressed with Alvarez to score a clean knockout over a guy with a great, great chin.

JP (Columbus, OH)

Williams-Martinez II - that's what I'm talkin' about!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Exactly. Took Williams long enough but glad he finally manned up.

Tyrone (Bordentown, NJ)

Should Sugar Shane retire?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I'd like to see him call it a day. He still wants to fight and even though he has slipped from when he was at his best, he is still good enough to beat some guys. I thought he beat Mora easily and was hosed on the decision. I have no doubt Shane will fight again.

James (Athens)

Why does Hatton have to pay this 31k fine? If he doesn't have license and will likely retire anyway, what's the point of paying the commission?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I would imagine if he doesn't pay the fine, the British regulators could change their mind and suspend his promotional company's license.

Joe the barber (NYC)

Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy watching Brian Vera fight...it's always fun. It's just that Pavlik is a huge attraction and these fights do nothing to help him build his career. At least match him with Manfredo who would present more of a challenge.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Manfredo I do not believe was offered the fight first off. Second, I have no problem with Pavlik, who is coming off a very tough loss, taking this kind of fight to get back in the swing of things. Also, as the undercard fight the budget is limited. Like it or not, Top Rank is not spending the cash for a big time fight on this card. The main event is very costly and I am sure Pavlik is making several hundred grand. So that left not that much for his opponent. Vera is getting a package of about $75,000 from what I am told. You can't make a marquee fight when the opponent gets $75,000. I am not defending it, I am simply explaining why Pavlik is fighting Vera and not a bigger name.

Chris (Overland Park, KS)

Dan, I believe you mentioned that Baldomir was overweight as well as someone else and Mora claimed the scale was off. Do you think that's possible? Was Baldomir fined as well?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I guess the scale could have been off, but most everyone made weight. Baldy was fined because he was more than 2 pounds over, but Alvarez did not accept the money and returned it to him, according to Golden Boy. I thought that was classy of the young man.

Aaron (MA)

My co-worker no longer thinks Jean Marc Mormeck is HOF bound. He is trying to make a case for "Sucra" Ray Oliveira instead!

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Your co-worker needs help immediately.

Chris (Nashville)

Got your tweet. I'm here. Let's get started.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Nice. Glad it worked! All the Freaks should be following me on Twitter -- @danrafaelespn

SeePast (PR)

How do you feel about Chavez backing out of the Cotto fight after all the hype? I had a feeling Chavez wouldn't actually go for it. However, I'm happy Cotto is going to rest; he needs it, after all those wars.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I never really believed Chavez would face Pavlik or Cotto this year even though both were talked about as done deals. If anyone is going to take some time off, Cotto is the guy. He's had so many hard, great fights. No problem with taking the rest of the year off. He deserves it.

Ed (Portland OR)

Hotter girlfriend Alvarez or Froch??

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Tough call. As I chat, I have an Alvarez fight from Mexico from last year playing on the DVD player.

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

Dan, do me a favor and if you ever get a chance to talk to Sergio Mora ask him if he would please announce to boxing fans world wide that he doesn't plan on hurting his opponent (not that he could anyway) before we cough up $45 to order his fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Exactly. I thought that was one of the lamest excuses I have ever heard from a fighter, and I have heard hundreds.

Big D (SD)

Danimal, what is up with JMM/Katsidis tickets? Do they go on sale tomorrow? I don't see them on ticketmonster or the MGM website. Is Schaeffer lurking in here today?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I posted the ticket details on my Twitter page. They go on sale tomorrow.

Kevin (Worcester)

Danimal, I thought you had indicated previously that the reaon Klitschko wasn't in your PFP rankings was because the PFP ranking system was for originally only for non-heavyweights as the assumption was someone like Klitschko could always meet Mayweather or Pacquaiao for example. Am i losing it????

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Have you received any heat for putting Wlad Klitschko in your P4P top ten? When I saw you put him in there I thought, you know, how can you counter that? The guy has just obliterated his division (albeit weak) for over a half decade.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

OK, to answer both of those question: Since I have been doing p4p rankings monthly for about 11 years I have not ranked heavyweights under the premise that the best heavyweights are, by definition, the best in the world. But I have changed my mind after a lot of thought on the flight home from Los Angeles last week. Klitschko has been so dominant, so good and virtually untouchable for five years while facing the best his division has to offer, I decided he deserved to be included on the list of the best fighters in the world. It is a rare exception that I have made. Simple as that.

Ronak (NY)

Mora vs Mosley was not a robbery Dan. It was a close fight which was thrown off by the bias announcing crew. Mora was doing more and landing more effective shots.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

To me it was a blatant robbery and I scored how I scored without hearing the HBO announce crew. I was sitting behind them and I don't hear the audio of the PPV when I am at fihgts. I only heard when I got home and watched some of the fight (only a little because it sucked so bad I couldn't sit through the whole thing again).

Matt (Lincoln, NE)

Danny boy, any news on Danny Jacobs?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Nothing right now. Just fought and was knocked out. I think he'll be out for a few more months before he embarks on the comeback.

Charles (DFW)

Why did Paul Williams insist on a 157 catchweight for the Martinez rematch. I would think that would favor Martinez as the smaller man.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I have no idea, especially when the first fight was at 160.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

By the way, as I posted that question, got a quick call from HBO's Kery Davis and we discussed briefly Martinez-Williams II, who had their press conference yesterday. I happen to agree with his opinion that Martinez and Williams, who are both top 5 on the p4p list is probably the most significant fight in terms of p4p that you can make in boxing other than Pacquiao-Mayweather.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Ronak"Mora was doing more", What fight were you watching?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Mora did not do anything unless you count running, holding and pitty pat punching every minute or so as doing something.

Rick (Marina, ca)

Alvarez seems like the real deal, You think we'll see Cotto vs Alvarez would be sick fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Would be but dont hold your breath at least not now. The whole Top Rank-GB thing is one reason but Alvarez is not ready for that kind of fight right now.

Marc (Philly)

Dont forget this is good boxing action on Tomorrow as one of the most exciting 122 lb fighters in the world in Teon Kennedy fights on gofightlive.tv

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Settle down.

Aaron (MA)

what are your thoughts on Perro Angulo possibly being deported?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

If he's here illegally and has been sneaking back and forth, as I have heard, then I wouldn't be surprised if he got the boot.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Mora was horrible to watch and just slithered away from Mosley all night like the latin snake he is.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Back to the Latin Fake.

Ronak (NY)

What was Mosley doing? Looking old and throwing punches that were missing. Yes, the point of boxing is to throw but its also not to get hit.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Mosley threw more, landed more (ripped him to the body as well) and landed at a higher percentage. His punches were also clearly harder. He made the fight, he landed the better punches more consistently. That's how you win. Mora did none of that.

Jim (Pittsburgh)

DTM Sorry I was late but I was buying williams - martinez tickets....any decent undercard possibilities?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

HBO will only have one live fight that night so don't count on a big-time co-feature, but I am hopeful we'll see some solid scraps on the undercard. DiBella and Goossen can make solid cards.

Alex (Louisville)

Any updates on Dirrell vs. Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Isn't it supposed to happen on Saturday?????????????????????????? I'll have to watch on TV since nobody told me where it is yet.

Ced (LV)

You and HBO were wrong with your scoring of this fight. Bottom line. Go check out ANY boxing forum, and everyone is saying Mora won this fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

I am not wrong. Mosley got robbed. Bad.

Ryan (Youngstown)

Victor Ortiz looked pretty good to me, but was it really more about him or the fact that Vivian Harris is just that washed up?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Combo of both I'm sure. Vivian is done -- has no legs, but Ortiz took care of him in style.

JP (L.A, CA)

Dan, I saw "El Perro" on my way into Staples Center last week. I told him I was a fan and requested that he stop declining solid deals. He looked at me with an evil eye so I walked away.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, along with the Bute/Brinkley fight, will the Diaconu/Shieka fight be on the tape delay on ESPN or its just Bute/Brinkley and Briggs/Klitschko?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

My understanding is that the ESPN3 Internet broadcast will be Bute-Brinkley and Diaconu-Sheika (and maybe other undercard bouts) but the replay will only be the main event -- although depending on how the fights go, that could change.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

So now that Cotto is going to rest for the remainder of 2010 what is on tap for Kermit Cintron or Vanes Martirosyan?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Vanes may still fight on the Dec. 4 ppv undercard. No idea what is up with Cintron.

Cody (Minneapolis)

Can we ban Ronak from the chat? He clearly is Sergio Mora.

Jose Sulaiman (Courtroom)

The WBC has found Floyd not guilty of the 8 felonies...instead, we promote him to being guilty of 8 SUPER-felonies, and we will throw in a diamond felony as well. In return for a small sanctioning fee of course.

Randy (NYC)

Moras' "I didn't want to hurt him" excuse was extremely disrespectful to boxing fans that paid good money for a non-ppv worthy fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

The worst part was one of his corner guys trying to deny he said it at the postfight news conference.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

There was certainly one clear outcome from Mosley-Mora: the fans lost.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I forever will refer to the card as Alvarez-Baldomir.

j-money (dallas,tx)

mora vs clottey!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I should ban you for even the thought.

Craig (Pittsburgh)

any word on the number of PPV's last weekend

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Nothing solid yet, but Schaefer told me it will break 100,000 easily.

Rick (Marina, ca)

I saw the KO of Enzo Mac, wow that ref is horrible, Enzo was out on his feet, the ref didn't even have him walk towards him, the ref actually pulled him right to the other fighter to tee off, it looked like.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Terrible ref job. That's how guys get hurt. Shoulda been stopped after the first knockdown.

John (Phoenix)

Didnt Dan pick Mora to win the fight. If there was an bias in terms of his scoring, isnt is natural to favor the fighter you intially thought would win?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

When I score fights it has nothing to do with my pick. If people don't want to believe that, that's on them.

Manny (Miami)

I dont understand how anyone can think Mora won the fight and was shocked at the decision. While it may have been the worst fight Ive ever PAID to see, there is no question Mosley won. Mora avoided confrontation and didnt hurt Mosley once the entire 12 rounds.

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

We have breaking news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Showtime has announced that Nov. 27 will be a doubleheader -- Ward-Dirrell from the US and Froch-Abraham from Helsinki, Finland in Super Six bouts. They are calling it Group Stage 3 and not the semifinals. Now sure how that will work. Showtime is saying Allan Green will have a new opponent for his Group Stage 3 fight (which I am told, by the way, could be on the Lopez-Marquez undercard on Nov. 6).

Alex (Louisville)

Wasn't there a freak who was going to report back on the movie theater experience? I'd love to know how it was.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Me too, if you're here let us know (or any Freaks who went to the fight in the movies).

Gil (NYC)

Wow ... That lawsuit threat even got Allan Green back in the tournament

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Will be interesting to see how that works out.

jt$ (DC)

Score! Awesome news, thanks for breaking it!

Aaron (Hartfrod)

that is great news Dan....I was almost certain the Super Six was dead...

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

It's not dead but I do think it's ridiculous to add a new fighter for Group Stage 3 who has no chance of making the semifinals based on the math.

Kevin (Worcester)

Thanks for explaining why Wlad is PFP ranked now by you, and I think that it is a logical conclusion to include them.

Edju (Salisbury, MA)

What's up with Joel Julio?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. He just fought last month and won, so nothing new with him at the moment.

Mike (Macomb, MI)

How about Allen Green fights Kelly Pavilk in February?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

How about no?

Ced (LV)

You're a clown, and a horrible representative for hardcore boxing fans. There are many other people more qualified and knowledgeable than you, and I'll be on their sites from now on.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Enjoy.

Gil (NYC)

Will you got to Ward/Direll or JMM/Katsidis ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

I just found out about the resked, so I have no idea yet.

pete (UK)

Who cares about Allan Green? He can't qualify anyway.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

On the math, Green can still make the semis, but needs a ton of help and must win his fight by knockout.

Alex (Louisville)

Why not go to Helsinki? That would be awesome.

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Instead of Ward-Dirrell or JMM-Katsidis? Are you insane?

butch (from the cape)

Saw it at at the movie theater...at 9 pm it was just my brother and I...after the first fight 3 Mora fans showed up...They stayed for the whole thing and they exploded like an A-bomb when Mora touched him with a jab.. it was sad...They applauded the decision..sickening...Great seeing it up on the big screen though wish it had more support though

John (Philly)

Wow, Ced is really taking your opinion personal. I completely agree with your scoring, Mosley won that fight.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

LOL @ Mora vs. Clotty... would that be for the Staring Championship of the world? It would break the compubox record for fewest punches thrown!

Gil (NYC)

Great pic with Mike and Roberto you posted this week ... Glad those guys seem to be doing well

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Glad you liked. I figured out how to post pix on Twitter so I have posted a few of different things -- some from ringside, posters, etc... I'll do it here and there. Enjoy.

James (Athens)

The next Green fight should not be in the Super Six. It would be a complete sham to see him in the semis if he knocks out someone who would the the THIRD alternate and clearly not on the level of Froch, Abraham, Ward or Dirrell.

crispanic (dc)

what's the deal with that movie about Mickey Ward? The Fighter I think...when is it coming out and how will it be released (select theaters, straight to dvd, etc...)

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

It'll be a major Hollywood release. I saw the trailer and looks very good, even though it apparently does not include the Gatti fights -- ends before those I think. But it still looks like a good movie.

John H (Augusta)

Danooooo. I heard Ishe Smith had tweeted that he would like a crack at Kirkland , do you think he has any shot of getting a fight like that ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Less than zero.

NCJ (KCMO)

I did not go, but a lady at my job said she and her husband went to watch it at a theatre, and loved it....except for the fact the feed was lost before the main event. They got their money back. I told her she should be thankful :)

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

LOL!!!

Darren (dallas,tx)

Wife wants a divorce after 13 years of marriage are there any hot ladies on here that like boxing???

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I'm not going there.

pete (UK)

Have you ever been to the UK (or outside America) to watch a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Yes, I've been to Mexico to cover before and Puerto Rico.

Jason (Riverside,CA)

Hi Dan. Well enough of the non-stories, now that you have the whole Twitter pic thing figured out, how long before we get to see Thunder and Popo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Maybe soon.

Charles (Philly)

Helsinki: WTF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Neutral site.

James (Lexington)

Fair to say photography isn't a hobby of yours? LOL

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

LOL, yes, fair to say.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Dan, I might get banished for this, but I can't even think of a reasonable and realistic opponent for Allan Green's stage 3 fight? Everyone in that division has a fight scheduled or is not ready for prime time yet.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I agree with you. With how horrible Green was against Ward and there not being any legit chance for his opponent to advance and there not being a really quality opponent that I am aware of him, it is disapppointing.

Gil (NYC)

P Williams mentioned on a boxing website that Floyd is scared of him but doesn't he have to factor that he puts no butts in seats as part of the reason?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

That weak quote from Williams was from the press conference. Williams needs to handle his biz at middleweight first before he tries to pick a fight with Mayweather. I didn't see him rushing to fight Martinez again.

max (los angeles)

I'm thinking of my Halloween costume. Where can I find the Roy Jones inspired Captain Hook costume? It really looked good on ROy.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Gerardo (AZ)

Dan, this was the third fight I've seen in a movie theatre recently, and it was still a great experience with the huge screen, pro sound, and, ummm, "Coca-Cola". But it definitely lacked support. Probably about 18-20 people in the theatre. Sad.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

I'm not surprised Mosley-Mora didn't draw a big crowd. It was not that big of a fight compared to the others that have been in theaters.

Shane (Portland, OR)

Is the Roy Jones fight gonna be on TV?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

At the moment, there is no TV.

Doug (Little Rock)

"With how horrible Green was against Ward and there not being any legit chance for his opponent to advance" - incorrect Dan, his opponent could possibly advance if he knocks Green out, something we should all hope to see.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

True. I guess the opponent could adavance with the same help as Green would need. But how weak would it be for a guy to make the semis after just one fight in the tournament?

Steve (NYC)

Is Enzo Mac finished? That KO was ugly.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

He's been finished. This kicked the dirt on the boxing grave.

jt$ (DC)

I think you should definitely go to the JMM/Katsidis fight. That's an all action war, with a pretty good undercard. I have a feeling that Ward/Dirrell is going to stink the joint out. They've danced around enough before the fight, I don't expect much difference in the ring.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Maybe I will let the Freaks decide where to go or maybe I will skip both and stay home for Thanksgiving.

Cesar (Chicago)

Did Israel Vazquez retire from boxing or does he plan on fighting again??

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Retired.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

So which Ricky Hatton lost his boxing license??

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Well, since there is only one...

Doug (Little Rock)

"But how weak would it be for a guy to make the semis after just one fight in the tournament?" - Agreed. Showtime had a blessing in disguise when Kessler dropped out, giving them the chance to move straight to the semis; they should've ran with it.

Jerry (columbus)

Dan, please don't tell me we'll have to watch Green vs Bika??

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I was told Bika turned down the fight as his father just died.

Tom (Pittsburgh)

Dan, what's your thoughts on 24/7 branching out to cover the pens/caps leading up to the winter classic. At least it's a better rivalry and match up than pacquiao/margarito.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

The show is a great concept. They do it great with boxing. They did great on NASCAR and I am sure HBO will deliver again with hockey.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Any chance Segio Mora fights Winky Wright next?(I'm sorry. Truly.)

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

I won't ban you because you are a true and loyal Freak, but you are hereby suspended for the rest of today.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

By the way -- as some have pointed out -- I guess Kessler's replacement will inherit his two points and have a better chance of advancing than Green.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Not only have I started to follow you on twitter, i've managed to get all my room mates to start watching boxing now AND follow you on twitter. Start of this year, none of them watched boxing. Now, all 6 of them follow you and read everyone on your articles. Boxing can be as big as it was, people just need to know its still going strong!

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Bless you my Freaky son.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Will Tavoris Cloud fight again this year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

It does not look promising with all the TV dates gone. I know his manager would like to get him another fight this year and I think Don King the same thing, but it's going to be tough. I doubt we will see him fight again this year.

Gez (UK)

How come no coverage of the 'Magnificent 7' in Monday's scorecard? Always interested to see what you think of our fighters, given the exaggerated press coverage of them over here! In particular what did you think of Cleverly and Chisora? And how highly do you rate DeGale? Thanks!

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

I was in Los Angeles covering Mosley-Mora on Saturday. I flew cross country (with a stop) the following the day and didn't get home until around 8:30 pm. I was exhausted. I had dinner and chilled for about a half hour and then had to write the entire scorecard for which I had to watch the Arce card and ShoBox card. And since I had not seen the Mag Seven and did not have time to watch it on the Internet, I did not include it in the scorecard, which was already pretty darn long. Deal with it.

Bob G (Saugus)

Hey Dan, I'm a big fan of your work and was very happy to have met you at the Fanfest in LA Friday. I watched you hang out with Harold Letterman and Richard Schaefer and Oscar. I had a great time. Thanks for you hard work.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Wasn't that Fanfest great? I was really impressed the way Golden Boy put that together and pulled it off. Great prices for the fest and the fight card -- for only $10! Fans could get free autographs from guys like Oscar, Hopkins, Marquez and lots of other guys, plus some great oldtimers. They had food booths, sponsor booths giving away free stuff. Good music. Just a really cool and fun time for fans. It was defintely worth going to.

Ali MacDonald (Glasgow,Scotland)

Well could you at least give your thoughts on the Magnificent 7 card ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Obviously the Enzo knockout loss was a brutal, brutal KO. Brook and Cleverly are obviously going places. Chisora is very raw still and has a lot of work to do. It was a very good card, obviously. I liked that all the main fights were KOs.

Dalyn ((Carson, CA))

Dan are you cool with Williams - Martinez 2 being in Jersey? Is there someplace else with a noted history of Argentinan or Spanish fight fans that would be a better fit? Thanks Dan

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Considering the first fight was in AC, and Williams a fighter who belongs on the East Coast rather than So Cal, I am glad the fight is in AC again.

Armando (Nj)

Dan - am i a bit crazy for thinking that Litzau really has a good chance to beat Caballero??

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

He is not nearly as skillful but he has power and Caballero does get hit, so he has that going for him.

jrfromdallas (southfork)

Do you think Hatton and Calzaghe share the same dealer since they once shared the same promoter?

Jack (London)

Disappointed your weekend summary of fights didn't cover any of the fight on the Macaranelli card.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I'm sure you will get over it.

Raan (UK Garage)

Danny boiiiiii, are the rumours about Derek Chisora offered a fight with Wladimir Klitschko true?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

He's one of several guys they are considering.

Riad (London)

any idea how the law suit between GBP and TP will edn up?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

No idea. But I would be pretty shocked if it actually went to trial.

Joe (PA)

Who's side are you on in the Golden Boy vs Top Rank Lawsuit?

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Neither.

DamonJJ (.)

Lol. I know editors usually write headlines but the Cotto, Yankees, Mets one had to be you!

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Can't take the credit for that. As I have said a million times, I don't write the heads. I suggest them sometimes, but I don't have a say in the headlines.

nick (Queens)

What are your thoughts on Paulie Malignaggi possibly signing with Golden Boy? Isn't that Johnny Damon signing with the Yankees-like?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Doesn't surprise me at all. They are going into NYC with a big deal with the new Brooklyn arena and there's not a big market for Paulie right now. So I am not surprised at all.

Aaron (FL)

Any news on Shawn Porter?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

He is on the Oct. 15 ShoBox undercard headlined by Tarver's heavyweight debut.

Bronk (Dillsburg, PA)

First off, I'm officially hooked on Twitter thanks to you. Getting some sort of boxing update from you daily is awesome. As for Brian Vera, I like the match up vs. Pavlik. Does he stand a chance? Probably not but at least he comes to fight. It should be a pretty good scrap while it lasts.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

Glad you are on Twitter! Vera will try hard and has pulled upsets before so you never know. I would say this -- Pavlik better be ready to fight a guy who will be in his face for as long as the fight lasts.

Dan since HBO Latino is showing the replay of Mosley-Mora, would it count as an HBO appearance for the fighters? Mosley has 26 HBO appearances from my count..

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Believe it not I have asked the PR department that question but as it related to Marquez-Diaz II, which was also replayed on HBO Latino but not HBO proper. They said they didn't think it would count. To me, it counts.

DamonJJ (.)

I just looked up Canelo's girlfriend and now I can't stand up from my desk!

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bronk (Dillsburg, PA)

How can anyone who thinks they're a true FREAK, in there right mind have Mora winning that fight? He was going backwards the entire fight. With that said, why wasn't Mosley more upset over the decision? He almost seemed content with it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Shane's reaction was odd, which I asked him about at the press conference. He seemed upset that he didn't get the knockout more than that he got a draw.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Dan to follow up- Morales vs. Hernandez, Barrera vs. Fana, De Leon vs. Seeger were HBO PPV's replayed on HBO Latino but not called by Lamps and Crew. Is that why Marquez vs. Diaz and Mosley vs. Mora count for those 4 guys as appearances?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

The difference is Lampley and Merchant DID call Mosley-Mora and not those others.

Dalyn (Carson, CA)

Freaks, I saw...Alvarez - Baldomir in a movie theater here in L.A., it's a great experience! Fight fans cheer the anthems, intros, and every big punch. People were booing the dull main event action and walked out when the draw was announced before the interviews. All Freaks should see fights this way!

Dalyn ((Carson, CA))

By the way, Dan your rankings are way better than Ring mag's. They have Victor Ortiz UNRANKED at 140! Dan has the best rankings Freaks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Victor unranked at 140 is a bit absurd to me.

Joel (Queens,NY)

Dan I know you really liked Canelo's performance but I think he got hit way to much. He needs to work on his defense before he fights a top level kind of fighter. What are your thoughts??

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

I agree. He is not a polished fighter yet. It takes time. He's 20. He has things to work on. He is just starting to fight quality opponents. There is no hurry or rush. That is why he is a "prospect." But he seems to have the foundation nedded to become a major star.

jrfromdallas (southfork)

Is it true that Froch/Abraham got postponed because Froch's ego suffered a sprain in training?

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

Yet again, Pay the Man, Shirley.

Charles (Inkster,MI)

Dan, I think it was cool that the 5th street gym opened back up?Angelo Dundee Seemed like he was real happy about it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

It is cool. That's a very famous and important place in boxing history.

Isai (OKC)

Cloud v. Shumenov? What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Good fight for sure.

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

If you don't follow me on Twitter check out this photo, the one several of you have written in to me about: http://twitpic.com/2qsb6j

chuzen (st. louis)

how much longer til bradley alexander becomes official?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Hopefully, soon. The Bradley side is not done yet and they are having issues. But I hope they get them worked out soon.

crispanic (dc)

can we expect ESPN3 to start airing fights more frequently?

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Ummmm, we are.

Fisher (Phoenix)

So are you ignoring all Mayweather questions, or have most boxing fans stopped caring enough to ask them?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

I actually haven't gotten many today about him today and I am glad, because there is nothing to talk about. He's got his troubles and he is not fighting.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, I'm sure you've been to the boxing HOF numerous times...How is it? How does it compare to other HOF's? Is it worth the roadtrip?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

It's pretty small. Best thing to do is go on induction weekend when the place is hoppin'. It's awesome then.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

Vince from Cleveland -- relax.

Ryan (Michigan )

So will Mayweather Hatton 2 be PPV or can I just catch it on Court TV?

James (Athens)

I almost wish we could get Jermain Taylor back in the tournament at this point.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Why? So he can get knocked out and even more hurt than last time?

chicano (los angeles)

hey dan what or who is going to be next for canelo? he is really good but i think we got to take it slow

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Fights Dec. 4 in Mexico.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

There may be only one Ricky Hatton. But is there only one Ricky Hatton coke dealer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

A question for the ages.

Ron (orlando)

Dan, do you think the HBO latino replay will have the english dub if you press the "SAP" button. I know it was mention for the Marquez-Diaz replay but the feature didn't work.

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

I do not believe that is the case. Try it.

Joe Piscotelli (Morroco)

Do you see Edwin Valero possibly getting a big match against a guy like...say...Pacquiao or Mayweather in the future?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

These are my readers, some of whom are obviously idiots.

Daniel (UK)

Dan, gofightlive.tv have got the Roy Jones fight on their schedule.

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

Well there ya go.

Charles (Inkster,MI)

Canelo fights next on Dec 4th...On Hbo we hope.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Golden Boy and HBO are talking. We'll see what happens. At this point in the year, the budget is basically used up for what they have coming and it's not so easy just to add a show and since I don't anticipate Alvarez fighting a big name, it's probably doubtful.

Joel (Queens,NY)

Any news about Dzinziruk??

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I just asked Gary Shaw about him today actually. Says he will be back in early 2011.

Chuck (Arkansas)

Why do you hate Jermain Taylor so much?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

What the hell are you talking about? I love JT. But I don't want to see him get scraped off the mat again and suffer another brain bleed. Maybe you do, but I sure don't.

Charles (Philly)

The real question is where the WBO has Valero ranked.

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Probably mandatory.

Quincy Q (Jonesboro Georgia)

Dan Money do u speak spanish

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

No anymore. Took it in high school and should have paid better attention.

Big T (State College, PA)

I'm sitting in study hall right now and I am debating on whether I should be chatting about boxing with you or doing my homework. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Who needs homework?

Luis (Philadelphia)

Mr. Rafael any chance Zab fights the winner of the Khan vs. Marcos fight???

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

I guess it's possible. I think maybe Victor Ortiz would get a shot first.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

By the way, did you see the WBC gave the rock band "The Scorpions" a belt as Champions and Ambassadors of Peace. What the crap is going on here? Does that mean that if I download one of their songs, I'll have to pay a sanctioning fee?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I did see that. I love the Scorps, so I thought it was maybe the only cool thing the WBC ever did. I heard KISS is being named the super ambassadors of peace though! (for a small sanctioning fee, of course).

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

OK, Freaks, I gotta run. Thanks for the chat today. Plenty of stuff for you to check out on the site and I will have a story on the Super Six up in a bit. Talk to you next week. Peace.
