Chat with Bill WIlliamson

Keith (Billings, MT)

The Chiefs are the only team in the AFC West to not have a mark in the loss column. What are your thoughts? Are they for real, or does this early success fade by the end of the season?

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

It's a great start. We'l; see as the season progresses, but I think the Chiefs have a chance to make noise, especially with an easy schedule.

Keith (Billings, MT)

What are the Broncos looking for in a RB these days? They have had a carousel of choices come through in the last two years and they only thing I see that they have in common is that they are already injured or they are injury prone!

Bill Williamson
  (2:05 PM)

After trading a fourth-rounder for Laurence Maroney, I think they're going stick with this group.

Adam (Fresno)

So I read your post just now about Gradkowski. And you said what will happen when teams figure him out.. well theyd better figure out how to stop our run game first. Sure its only week 2 but Mcfadden is second in rushing yards and with a healthy michael bush, these teams will have a hard enough time stopping them two. Much less having time to game plan for gradkowski..give the guy a chance your talking about a "spark" hes had this "spark" for about 8 games now that lasted a whole offseaon.... so I think its more then a "spark" bill

Bill Williamson
  (2:07 PM)

So a "spark" is now a bad thing?

Paul (Tracy, CA)

Bill, What do you think is the difference between D-MAC now and D-MAC last year? And can he keep it up?

Bill Williamson
  (2:08 PM)

It's all about health for McFadden. If can he stay healthy, he can be a productive player.

steve j (Kansas)

What do you think of the KC rookies?

Bill Williamson
  (2:10 PM)

They've been terriifc. The Chiefs are getting a big contribution from this clss. It could be a veyr special group.Coach Tpdd Haley has loved this group since he got it.

neil (clovis, ca)

Do you think the raiders are better with campbell or gradkowski under center? campbell is the more established NFL quarterback but gradkowski brings an undeniable spark to the raider offense and seems to life the entire team. what do you think? thanks, bill.

Jay (Bloomington, IN)

I don't see Tebow getting any time at quarterback but does his role in the wildcat expand as the season progresses?

Bill Williamson
  (2:14 PM)

Right now, they are better off with Gradkowski. But we have to see if he can keep it up long-term.... On Tebow, i think it is a game-to-game basis. I don't think he'll be forced onto the field. The Broncos will use Tebow when they think they can use him.

Chris (Kauai)

Hey Bill, Coach Haley really isn't about "Marty ball" is he? It seems like the group from Arizona and New Eng. like to throw. Is he going to give Matt Cassel a chance to open up?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Haley is being very careful with his offense. I think he wants to see it grow. But sooner or later, Cassel is going to have to win a game in the air.

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

Ilan (Claremont, CA)

hey Bill, Power Rankings have the Chargers dropping in the rankings destroying the Jaguars in all facets of the game (6 turnovers, pass rush, tackling, running the ball, throwing the ball), while teams like Indianapolis moving up to the number 1. I Feel like SD should still be in the 4-7 range... Your thoughts as to why this isn't so?

Bill Williamson
  (2:16 PM)

I tend to agree wth you.

Marcel (hollywood,fl)

Do you agree with the notion that the only way to help a bad pass protecting offensive line, like the raiders have, is to have a qb that gets rid of the ball in a quick fashion? That is the reason why I believe Gradkowski will work in Oakland, and make this team a formidable bunch with playoff aspirations. What do you think?

Bill Williamson
  (2:21 PM)

For sure, that's why he is there. But let's hold off on the playoff talk for a while. Barely beating the ptiful Rams after a 25-point loss to a team that lost the next week does not make a playoff team. And that not Raider bashing. That's just common sense. Let's give Oakland a chance to get better before talking playoffs. We have to ask ourselves this: if the Oakland coaches thought Gradkowski (who gave the team the same energy last year as he did in Week 2) was capble of being a winning quarterbck, why did they repelce him in the offseason?Either they made a massive mistake or Gradkowski is best suited as a backup. Time will tell.

Andres (SD, CA)

Whats the word on RB Mathews? If Tolbert starts will Mathews see any play time? What are your thoughts on his so far going into week 3?

Bill Williamson
  (2:23 PM)

Mathews didn't practice Wednesday, so there is a chance he may not play. It's been fun to see what Tolbert could do as the primary back, but this Mathews will be fine and he has looked good. Stil, not loving two fumbles in two games.

Jeremy (San Diego)

Now that Micheal Bush might be able to play and DMac doing good so far, If they both stay healthy, who do you think has a bigger year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:24 PM)

Got to stick with McFadden at this point, don't you?

Rick (Marina)

So with The Chargers not trading Jackson, do you think AJ will try to take one of the deals that was supposely done with another team and maybe tweak it and sign VJax?

Bill Williamson
  (2:25 PM)

Good question, but I think there is too much bad blood at this point for that to happen.

Nelly (Kansas City)

What happens if Matt Cassel continues to be unimpressive and the Chiefs decide not to pick up his option for next season... Do the Chiefs draft a QB in the first couple rounds or bring in a starter via trade or free agency?

Bill Williamson
  (2:27 PM)

We will have to see if it happens. I'd probably say they'd draft a youngster and maybe look for a vet for the short term.

Lucas (Ann Arbor, MI)

What are your thoughts on the Chiefs-49ers game? It's funny to me how people believe the 49ers are just going to waltz into Arrowhead and get an easy victory. KC is a very tough place to play and the 49ers haven't really shown they can play well on the road espically at Seattle earlier in the season.

Bill Williamson
  (2:28 PM)

The 49ers are desperate, but the Chiefs will not be a cake walk. This team is learning to win. Frnakly, I expect the Chiefs to go into the bye week 3-0.

Richard Ames (Long Island)

McDaniels has taken a lot of heat for last years draft. Do you agree that this years picks, especially Cox,Thomas,Beadles and Walton have made up for his mistakes last year

Bill Williamson
  (2:30 PM)

I'm not sure one class can make up for another class, but so far, this class looks promising. The rookie offensive linemen deserve a lot of credit.

robert (illinois)

What is the deal w/ J. Gafney? Is D. Thomas now the man?

Bill Williamson
  (2:31 PM)

I think it is week-to-week in McDaniels' mind. But if Thomas can contunue to play the way he did in his debut, then he will naturually become the No. 1 receiver.

Ilan (Claremont, CA)

Hey Bill, Can we expect the Chargers D to be as aggresive and as good as the 2006 D? The takeaways and pressure where there last week, but it was Jacksonville... Should we expect SD Defense to be a top 10 by the end of the year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:32 PM)

If it keeps up, yes, for sure.

Chris (NAS Whidbey Island)

Whats the latest in the McNiel situation are talks even happening at this point?

Bill Williamson
  (2:35 PM)

So much has been made about the Jackson situation, but the McNeill saga has been quiet. The Chargers have no plans of trading him and he is planning to stay away. By the way, his replacment, Brnadyn Dombrowski, has been terrific so far.

SFC Erick Jones (Fort Jackson)

Mr. WilliamsonIf the defense keeps playing this way, Can you see Romeo Crennel leaving for another job after this season.

Bill Williamson
  (2:37 PM)

I think Crennel would have to put in a 2 or 3 good years as the Chiefs' DC before getting another shot. This is no knock on Crennel, but I think he has a rep aroudn the league as a better coordinator than a head coach a la Mike Nolan.

Ron (Memphis)

Happy with my Chiefs so far, but have a feeling we're still a year away from competing for the playoffs. We really need a game-changer WR. How about this. VJax sits for the year, the CBA gets re-done making him a FA. Could the Chiefs make a play for him?

Bill Williamson
  (2:38 PM)

Sure, why not? He'd be a great fit there. But several teams would feel the same way.

Jeff (NC)

Bill, do you expect Zach Miller to finally get into a groove now that Gradkowski is starting? He had a great year last year and I would love to see him live up to the preseason hype from this year.

Bill Williamson
  (2:39 PM)

I' ma believer in Miller. I expct good things from him.

Ryan (Denver)

Where would you rank the Broncos passing game through the first 2 games? Plus, how do you see the Broncos O-Line matching up against the speedy Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, will Orton and the Broncos be in for a long Sunday afternoon?

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

Denver should have Harris and Kuper back, so that will help. But this will be a graat challenge for a passing game hat has been terrific so far.

Bill Williamson
  (2:41 PM)

Travis (Arizona)

How can Jackson call the Chargers unethical for not trading him, when he is holding out for more money? Seems a bit hypocritical no?

Bill Williamson
  (2:42 PM)

if he wants to play, he can play in San Diego. It all comes down to money, of coruse.

Andy (Provo, UT)

Chiefs have a solid win at home against the Chargers and a road win against the Browns. Not very many people are giving the Chiefs much respect. What do the Chiefs have to do in the next three games (SF, @Ind, @Hou) in order to silence the doubters?

Bill Williamson
  (2:44 PM)

If Kansas City was somehow 4-1 after the next three games it would be huge, I mean, huge. A 3-2 record would be nice especially with a schedule that includes two 2009 playoff teams in the Chiefs' final 11 games.

Brandon (Billings)

Hey Bill love the blog, driving 17 hours to KC to watch the Chiefs play the 9ers, what chance do you give the Chiefs to pull out a "W"?

Bill Williamson
  (2:45 PM)

Thanks ... I think the trip will be worth your while. Drive safely.

scuba (california)

if gradkowski fails at qb this week are they gonna be flip flopping the following week and put cambell back in?

Bill Williamson
  (2:46 PM)

No, I don't think they can do that. They have to stick with Gradkowski now.

Eron (Pinedale, WY)

Orton has been throwing many more medium to long passes than he did last year. Is this a function of personel, Kyle's confidence, or McDaniels opening up the playbook?

Bill Williamson
  (2:51 PM)

Yes, I think all of the above.

Austin (San Diego)

Bill, you cant be serious when you say all these good things about the chiefs when they just barely beat the browns and beat a SD team that played terrible in the rain i mean come on everyone knows there still a 5 win team this year and the chargers will dominate them in there next game and you know it.

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

Maybe the Chargers will dominate the Chiefs when they play next, but this is a better team in Kansas City. There is no doubt about that.

Tarek (NYC)

Hey Bill, what is the spilt between McFadden/Bush this week? 70/30 80/20? I think the raiders should use both of them together and let McFadden catch some passes and see if he can break them. Thanks.

Bill Williamson
  (2:52 PM)

I'd say probably 70-30 McFadden to give Bush a chance to ease into it.

Jimmy (Denver)

With the Broncos having heavy hearts this week, can the leadership and inspiration of Dawkins and Champ pull out a win over tough Indi this week?

Bill Williamson
  (2:53 PM)

There is good leadership in Denver so expect this team to be ready to play after a tough week.

Austin (San Diego)

Hey bill on a serious note, why is nobody talking about Buster Davis i think the guy becomes the SOLID #2 receiver in SD he seems to have all the rite stuff. what do you think?

Bill Williamson
  (2:54 PM)

He's been god so far. Seven catches. I think he's coming along well.

Drew (LA) [via mobile]

Do you think AJ Smith is an unreasonable GM? Is he the reason the Chargers have no rings? Or is he the reason we're always contenders? Or both? Thanks bill, love the blog

Bill Williamson
  (2:55 PM)

The guy has built a pretty good program.

Brett (San Diego)

Hey Bill, wasn't the situation with V Jax very predictable. I'm not surprised, I don't think you are...so why are his agents and Jackson himself? He took a gamble and lost just like we are without him, but unethical, come on!

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

I didn't expect him to be traded in that window. No one paints A.J. Smith into a corner. Now, I could see Smith trading him Oct. 18 or 19 when its on his schedule.

Sandra (West Covina)

Hi Bill, do you think Philip Rivers has a legitimate shot at MVP this year?

Bill Williamson
  (2:56 PM)

Sure, why not? He's a special player who puts up big numbers.

Chris Sessler (Lee's Summit, MO)

Do you think the Chiefs were interested in Kevin Kolb? If Cassel keeps under-performing, do you think the Chiefs would look into finding a new qb?

Bill Williamson
  (2:59 PM)

You never know, but I don't think so at this point.

Brad (St. Petersburg, FL)

Are the Chargers really a team this season that has a chance at contending for the AFC? This team dosen't have the quality players right now playing that they need to have and this division isn't the pushover division that it's been the last few years.

Bill Williamson
  (3:00 PM)

Sure, I think San Diego can make a run. If they keep up the balance on offense and keep creating turnovers on defnese, the Chargers have a real shot.

Bill Williamson
  (3:01 PM)

Thanks everyone, enjoyed it. Enjoy Week 3.
