Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:02 PM)

Good afternoon all. Thanks so much for coming. Expecting we'll have an entertaining hour. Let's dive in.

Anthony (Nashville)

I think Fisher's comment about non-roughing the passer call was spot on. What sort of underlying sentiment is there when Brady or Manning get flags if the defense breathes on them but Young gets nothing after being pile driven head first?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

It should have been a penalty. Thankfully he was not hurt. Fisher's addressed it. To keep going on and on about it starts to come off as crying. It happens. You get up, wipe yourself off and play the next play and the next game after voicing your complaint. It should be called fairly. The one against Suggs on Carson Palmer wasn't a penalty. They make human errors.

Denise (Indy)

With Gonzo out till at least the bye week, do you see the Colts pulling Blair White up from the practice squad? If not, what happens in a game if Wayne, Garcon, or Collie gets hurt?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

If they play a lot of two tight ends like they did against the Giants, they'd still be fine. And Clark is a receiver much of the time.

Kevin (Louisiana)

Lost in the hoopla surrounding Young's benching is the pourous play of the offensive line. The Raiders had their share of sucess agains the O-line as well that was masked by one big run by CJ and a few runs by Vince. They were bad in the preseason and we just shrugged it off as "the preseason" but shouldn't this be a bit alarming now? They have no doubt taken a giant step back.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

I don't know that it's lost. It was a terrible game, particularly in the second half. They got pushed around and beaten up. One game does not equal "a giant step back."

Jerry Hughes (Indy)

Paul, Do you see me getting activated any time soon?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

From the way Polian has talked, I wouldn't be surprised if it was about mid-season before you play, unless someone gets hurt.

Val (OLY WA)

Drafting Tate makes me wonder about the Texans' assessment of Foster prior to the season. Obviously you can never have enough RBs, but do you see a different Foster from what was his pre-draft eval? They seem very similar type of RBs -- how do they differ -- aside from health?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:06 PM)

Having two of them is better than having one of them. I haven't seen a ton or Tate to characterize him. Supposed to be able to get a tough yard.

Denise (Indy)

What's the rationale on having Jerraud Powers (our best cornerback IMO) return punts instead of Devin Moore?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

They think Powers is better at it. What other rationale would there be?

Ralph Lauren (New York City)

Who picked out those horrendous hats they're wearing in the NFL this season.....the ones with the team name under a logo???

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:07 PM)

I would simply decline to wear it, or throw an older one in my bag. But kids see those and go out and buy them.

Darrell (Houston)

Yo PK, got a question. Even with two impressive wins, why are there people still picking to Texans to fail this year, especially against Dallas. People forget that in the third preseason game, Texans played really strong against them. What's your take??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

I think you should spend more time savoring a great start and less concerned with "people still picking the Texans to fail this year." Who are these people? Andre Johnson pointed out yesterday that the last time they were 2-0 they lost five of their next six.

Fili Moala (Working on Dance Moves)

PK, how about a big boy scoring a TD off a fumble recovery??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:10 PM)

I was very impressed with your agility and hands on that play.

Miguel (Houston, TX)

When are we going to find a cure for Overtrained Athlete Syndrome? All kidding aside, is this pretty much a 2 horse race for the division? Feels like a NASCAR race... last few laps just hoping we don't run out of gas while the Colts have a full tank behind us. Don't think TEN nor JAX has anything to keep them going besides their RBs.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

Awfully early to dismiss teams from the race.

Ryan (San Diego)

Are you proud to associate your name with a power ranking that drops a team a spot after winning by 30 points? Seems odd

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

It's not each team in a vacuum. What other teams do has a bearing.

Keith (Billings, MT)

Do you think that coach Fisher has issues with Vince Young? Last year he was forced to start him despite the team losses and people calling Young to start. This year he begins to have a bad game against one of the best defenses in the league and he benches him....what gives?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Of course he has issues. You think those of us critical of Young aren't reflecting some feelings from inside the building? Clearly he has not won over this team yet. That's what he's supposed to be doing now, proving he's the long-term guy.

Finley (Gov's Mansion)

Thanks for putting in that extra work on my new PSA. The polls have shifted in my favor and I'm here picking out tile.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Premature puppy.

Duane Brown (Houston)

That's the last time I borrow supplements from Cush.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Probably should have thought of that ahead of time, chief. At least you didn't borrow his excuse.

Rob (Green Cove Springs, FL)

If MoJo & Rashad Jennings can get cranking against the Eagles, this might be a good game. Neither team has a very good defense. My question is what ever happened to Andy Reid's policy of a starter not losing his job due to injury? And can Kolb trust his coach going forward?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

Bad signal all around. Now if you are a QB with a concussion, are you going to be less likely to be completely honest because you know what might happen?

B. Fullford (Jacksonville, FL)

Wanted to thank you for the exposure you give to some of the fan blogs. Obviously we don't have the access real journalists do and often we find ourselves speculating or simply being creative so to entertain. What you do affords us the opportunity to improve our writing and how we acquire and interpret information.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

If it's a good read with an interesting take, I like to point people to it. If you say so and so is a &#%*@% I won't touch it. There is some very good and smart stuff out there. Still a high percentage is not good at all.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

Time saver: I avoid game prediction and fantasy lineup questions, because I don't predict games and because the other chatters aren't as into your fantasy team as you are.

Pointless (Question)

Whats more over-rated? Over reaction to week 2 power rankings or Derek Jeter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Both are correctly rated.

jamal (nashville)

where would you rank the titans defense right now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

It's good, but hasn't seen a good offense or quarterback yet.

Tia (Jacksonville)

Del Rio benching Garrard was that a statement or common sense because the game had gotten away from the Jaguars?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Both.

Ricky (Houston)

The texans seems like they are getting burned when they go to zone on defense why are they favoring that so much? can they not hang with man?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

I'm not as worried, yet, about the Titans pass defense as a lot of people. Stay tuned for something on that tomorrow.

Jeremy (Milwaukee)

PK - Do you still think Colts are Superbowl contenders? Bad week 1 filling gaps and protecting Peyton and week 2 we played a Giants team that was not ready...what do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

And so because the Giants were not ready the Colts can't contend? Not following you there. They pounded a bad and stupid team. Don't know what more you could have asked outside of changing the schedule. Yes, absolutely still a contender and the favorite to win the division.

Jamie Winborn (Baptist Sports Park)

hey, how have I been doing in replacement of McRath?Seems like not too bad so far...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

You've been very happy about the terrible offenses you've seen.

Simon Kuharsky (Halo Tourney)

Dad, if we're watching Indy this weekend we need some high altitude beer.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

I won't be in Denver, but I might see it on TV. You'll be with Mom and Finley.

Vincent Jackson (Pouting)

Paul, have any openings on your weekend team? Doesn't look like I'll be suiting up for several more weeks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

I picked you up last week because I didn't realize the size of AJ's grudge.

TwoToneTrav (the 'Vue (TN))

In his conference call this week, Keith Bulluck ripped coach's decision to pull VY after 3 quarters of play, while citing Collins' 0-6 record the previous year before he was yanked. Do you get the sense that Keith's feelings are indicitive of team sentiment, but he's the only one in a position to voice it?I fear that Fisher is losing the team, do you get that sense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

You think Jeff is losing the team because a guy no longer on the team ripped him?

Jeff (Indiana)

At twitter do you only follow players and other NFL-related bloggers/media guys, or do you also follow people who just happen to be fans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

I follow people I cover and I follow people I am interested in.

jamal (nashville)

Who are u pulling for titans or giants?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Further announcement: I don't root for anything but well-paced games and good storylines. (Also the Yankees, US Soccer and Columbia.)

Keith (Billings, MT)

How long does Kenny Britt have to become relevant or be traded/called a bust?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

A lot longer than this.

Nate (Indy)

Is there anyone from the league who shares your raised eyebrow interest in the Texans and PED's? Two players a trend does not make, but how closely are people looking for a potential third?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

Two of 22 players is significant to me. I'm not suggesting they've got anything going on there implemented by the team. I don't think that at all. But two guy were stupid enough to break the rules and get caught. That's not nothing to me. Take away your top defender and your left tackle and you are messing with your season. But I'm a bad guy for bringing it up, apparently.

ADAM (Clarksville,Tn)

If Vince does not make the playoffs, does Kerry Collins get a new contract, and do the Titans start grooming Rusty Smith or draft QB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

They just drafted Smith, so why would they draft someone to be in his way? I would think this will be it for KC.

Brett Favre (Hot Tub)

I'm too old for this s*#@!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

Would you quit during the season?

Brendan (Satellite Beach)

Hey Paul, I was wondering if you rooted for a team when you were younger and your transition between fan/fanatic to unbiased sports reporter?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Moved to Jersey when I was six, and as a little kid, rooted for both teams since they were both on TV every Sunday. Became more a Giants guy as some key friends were long-time Jersey folks who were longtime fans. Hostetler was the first starting QB i covered (in Oakland). If you want to be a professional, it's not at all hard to drop the rooting interests.

Justin Snow (Practice)

Name me one other person besides you that knows who the hell I am PK.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:30 PM)

Adam Vinatieri and Mike Chappell. There are two people.

Adam (Nashville)

Big recruiting 'get' yesterday for Vanderbilt Men's basketball team, you excited about their future?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Very good news. Dores could be good this year.

Todd (MtySeahawk)

Did you ever figure out which Premier team to root for? I know you were looking for one.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

Decided to watch more before declaring. Fulham in the meantime. But I've had no time to watch anything.

Mike (Ohio)

You like baseball. I suggest following @OldHossRadbourn if you don't already. Hilarious stuff.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:32 PM)

He's great. I fully endorse.

Keith (Billings, MT)

You said that Vince Young should be winning over his team right now, but how do you suppose he's to do this with a coach that is against him every day and pulls him off the field evry chance he gets?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

"Against him every day." Please illustrate with examples. Also, he's allowed to win over his coach too. He needs to win everyone over and the clock is ticking as if he's Marissa Tomei in "My Cousin Vinny." C'mon already.

Nate (Indy)

Do teams generally do anything special to prepare to play in the high altitudes of Denver, or just bring lots of O2 tanks for players to suck on.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I don't know what more you can do. Super hydrate all week.

Wade Phillips (Bomb Shelter)

Am I about out of lives Paul?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

You are a survivor. With super body language.

Peter (Atlanta, GA)

Have the Texans finally taken the torch from the Colts as top dawg in the division or is there still much more for the Texans to prove?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

IT'S TWO GAMES!!!!

Bobby D (My Trailor)

20 Year anniversary of GoodFellas, PK. What's your favorite scene?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

"Jimmy, it s a coupe."

ADAM (Clarksville,Tn)

In 2012 do you see Vince gone and Rusty as the starting QB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

We're just skipping 2011?

Jed (Indy)

The Colts finally ran the ball well!!! Do you think they will try and use the run more this year to setup the pass, or just fall back to the passing game? I think they could have a decent running game if they actually gave carries to Addai and Brown.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

They absolutely want to run it. But if it's not working, they know they can win throwing it.

Jason Christena (Fishers, IN)

I'm the coin conqueor this week, so I'm going to try a question. I'm wondering about Powers returning punts-is this a long-term plan? Is there really no one else on the roster who can do this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Nice week of picks. I think they think Powers is best available right now. I should have gotten everyone to say man or woman in the pool as I have to congratulate him/her each week.

short attention span (My Cousin Vinny DVD)

I'm sorry, you were saying?I completely lost focus when you said "Marissa Tomei"

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Me too, kinda.

Bobby Boucher (Waterboy)

Mr. PK, please tell the Indianapolis Colts that I am an experienced water boy and woudl be happy to provide them hydration services.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

They said they appreciate it but have things covered.

Ricky (Houston)

do you think slaton will be returning anymore kick offs? i would like to see the texans start better then the 1 yard line

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

That was a horrific play. But he can be good at that job and will hold on to it, I expect.

Bernard Pollard (H-Town)

Aren't I the defensive MVP for the Texans? Mario may have the sack numbers, and we give up some yards, but isn't my play and toughness part of this 2-0 thing?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

It's also part of the 400-yard passing days against the Texans thing.

ADAM (Clarksville,Tn)

Isn't Vince under contract in 2011?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Yes, but that doesn't guarantee anything, does it?

Salman (Houston)

Do you think it's a good idea for the Texans to start using other safety's more in place of Eugene Wilson? Troy Nolan had a good preseason and I really want to see him play more.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

I'm very intrigued by alternatives too, and I wish they had at least one more. But they aren't making a change from Wilson while he's healthy and they are winning.

TWO GAMES (TWO GAMES)

SO WHAT, WE'RE JUST CHUMPS??

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

You count. But let's remember last year's 6-0 Broncos, OK?

Titans Offense (Limbo)

Was the Steeler's defense that good or was I that bad?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

They go hand-in-hand.

Buckley (Knoxville)

I think it shocked the world to see CJ get shut down so solid by Pittsburgh last weekend. Do you think other teams will go to the slate with power on that game film to scheme a way to shut down CJ? I think the Titans motto should be: "Let's keep it fun!" Smile.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

Other people would love to do what the Steelers did. Know they problem with that? They don't have the Steelers' players.

MJD (Jacksonville, FL)

PK, what has happened to my Mojo?!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

IT'S TWO GAMES!

j. christohper (s. Ga)

Isn't it just a little concerning that not one of VY's O-lineman retaliated after his 3-Steeler body slam? I get it that they didn't want a penalty and should have done more to stop it from happening in the first place...but they were just kinda standing there watching with their hands on their hips...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

I talked with Jake Scott about this. And he smartly said it would have done no good to have retaliated and gotten the penalty the Steelers didn't get. Also, do we know there wasn't retaliation later in other pile ups? I bet there was.

Troy P (Using Head N. Shoulders)

Pretty sick move with the flying leap to stone old man Collins at the goal line, huh?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Unbelievable.

Mike (Ohio)

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I know you will) here. I always felt like Tom Coughlin was a pretty good coach until last Sunday. Why did they take so long to adjust out of a defensive gameplan that obviously wasn't working from the get go?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

I asked him about that Wednesday and, stubborn as ever, he said it was execution not the plan. (Players not coaches.) I think he let Perry do his thing and Perry wasn't up to it.

RB (H-Town)

Worse Secondary - Texans or Jaguars?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Jaguars.

Jeff (NC)

What was for lunch today?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

Lovely steak kabob salad. Thanks for caring.

Jeff (NC)

Thanks for dishing out the link to the NFL TV Maps last year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

I dish them out this year too, every Tuesday.

joeschilt (toledo,ohio)

why hasnt oregon moved up in the rankings?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

Are you lost?

Dinger (Nashvegas)

Have you read the Football Outsiders article about my play calling last week? Do you agree I need to call better plays.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

You didn't have a good week. No one with the Titans did.

Matt (IN)

The next "My Primary Complaint": Fans/Media going overboard after only 2 games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

It's in hiatus. Something new tomorrow. Filming after we are finished here.

Josh C (Nashville)

I'm a Titans fan, and read Coach Fisher's comments about the flying Polomalu tackle. He said it should have been a penalty. I watched it about 5 times, and really saw no offsides. He seemed to have predicted the snap-count perfectly. What are your thoughts on this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

I'm with you. Fantastic play.

B. Fullford (Jacksonville, FL)

Are we going to see a new concert poster on that back wall?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

I have two new ones, but they aren't framed up.

Zac (Franklin)

Seems like the owners are set on going to 18 games. Player's want something in return or don't want it at all. You have an idea where coaches stand on this issue?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

More work, same pay. Probably against. Boss likes it. Probably for it. I think they'll go both ways. A lot stuck on status quo.

JP (Jax)

Will David Garrad ever become a more consistent passer?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Seems to me he's had sufficient opportunity.

John (Troy, MO)

When I was younger and played youth football, everyone called me "Scooter" because I was so quick. I'd like to see CJ be nicknamed "Scooter" because he can get around the edge so fast. What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

Horrific.

Keith (Billings, MT)

Not being in the organiztion my example of coach Fisher being against Vince Young is this: Kerry Collins gets to go 0-6 before ownership tells him he has to put in Vince Young who almost took them into the playoffs. Young gets 3 quarters and get pulled in a 16-3 game for Collins to be put in as his replacement. Sure doesn't seem like Fisher is giving him the same opportunituies.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

That's not the same as against him every day is it?

B. Fullford (Jacksonville, FL)

I guess we'll have to pay attention to the video blogs then: no disclosure of what those two are? I say we have a contest to see who can guess. Winner gets dinner with PK.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

Hint: You'd win the contest.

Bad Nickname Hall of Fame (Reno, NV )

Scooter = WIN!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

And call me "Curly!"

j. christohper (s. Ga)

how much will it matter this Sunday that Fisher has a pretty good track record of owning Coughlin?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Not at all. I think what will matter most is the Giants might be really bad.

Josh (Nashville)

Do you think this 18 game schedule is just a negotiating tactic? It's a common tactic to ask for something that you don't necessarily want so you can give it away in order to get something else you do. Like keeping more of the pie.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

They could have implemented 18 games under this CBA if they wanted. It's already in there. League is being nice not to just do it.

John's HS Coach (Troy, MO)

"Scooter" ran a 5.2 40, he's not nearly as fast as he remembers being.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

So noted. He also has a dog named Fido.

Rob (Green Cove Springs, FL)

You've expressed that special teams isn't 1/3rd of the game because of the number of snaps, but do you think the decent special teams play of the Jags will help? Give the Jags a shorter field for our offense and a longer field for the Eagles' offense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

It will help. But it would help more to be better on offense or defense or both.

Brandon Jacobs' helmet (Indy)

what are the odds I make an appearance in the stands at the new Meadowlands this weekend?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I'm no physicist, but if you throw your helmet to the ground, how does it go 10 rows up? Is his claim that it bounced. Or that he has horrific aim?

JB (TX)

Don't you think Titans fans melting down at 1-1 is as bad as Texan fans booking Super Bowl hotels after 2-0? It's not college football where one loss ends your championship hunt. I think they have a great look at 3-1, which anyone would have taken before the season.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Absolutely as bad. Maybe worse because of my proximity. It's as if there should be a funeral.

Adam (Louisville, KY)

Mario Williams said he used Redskins fans asking if he had "eaten his mushrooms" in reference to his nickname Super Mario, as motivation in his 3 sacks against McNabb. How is this remotely offensive?!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

No idea. Guys use whatever they can find for motivation. I'm on record as really appreciating those who are motivated by the fact that they get paid.

B. Fullford (Jacksonville, FL)

Do you like Reid's decision to go with Vick? I think Philly is better and it definitely gives them an edge against the Jags. The talk that Kolb might get traded is the piece that actually shocked me more than Vick starting.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:01 PM)

Get a concussion and you might lose your job. That's one of several bad messages here. Reid spent month preparing a team and a plan for Kolb. I am completely shocked.

Steve (Blacksburg, VA)

Whats your twitter handle?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

@ESPN_AFCSouth

Mike (Ohio)

Is it alarming that the Colts injury list already takes more than one Kuharsky tweet to publish?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

I think all of us -- media, fans, coaches players, execs, the league -- are in agreement one one thing: one tweet injury reports are the way to go.

Herb (Houston)

PK - In the 1960"s - Giant's announcer - Marty Glickman -"GO Giants GO"Any memories of this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

I was born in 1969.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:04 PM)

Folks, that went quickly. Please keep clicking on the blog. Really thrilled to see so many new Texans fans on board. Enjoy the games.
