Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (11:58 AM)

What is shaking everyone? Let's get this rolling

Mike (Boca Raton)

Any chance of starting this party early?

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

A few mins early today Brother. Usually I start a little earlier, but was scarfing down a sandwich. Mans gotta eat.

Matt Williamson
  (11:59 AM)

A few mins early today Brother. Usually I start a little earlier, but was scarfing down a sandwich. Mans gotta eat.

Dan (MA)

Hey Matt, is Miami going to let Chad Henne start throwing more? What seems to be the hold up?

Matt Williamson
  (12:00 PM)

I don't know that he has progressed quite as rapidly as many of us thought. I still have high hopes for him overall, but it is a work in progress. To answer the question, I would say Yes, but again, not by leaps and bounds. They are playing good D. You know they will always stress the run. And that formula has worked.

Luke (Hamilton, Ontario)

Hope you don't ignore one of your Steeltown brothers (Hamilton is Steeltown of Canada)My question is about the Phins secondary. You haven't been a big fan except for VD.1. I think you've overlooked Yeremiah Bell. I think he's highly underrated2. Do you think VD has a chance of being elite?3. Was Jason Allen's performance a fluke?

Matt Williamson
  (12:02 PM)

First off, this secondary has certainly exceeded my expectations. No doubt. However, I also don't think that Minny's passing game is a real tough test right now either. Love VD though and would expect him to have a Top 10 CB type season. Allen has really been the surprise. He was a 1st round pick for a reason-maybe it is all clicking. Keep your fingers crossed on him. Bell is a play maker. Around the football a lot. But I would also say that he is just an average coverage player. Would love to see a big time ball hawking FS added this off season.

Justin (St Paul)

Best was a BEAST last week how do you see him doing against the Vikings this week?

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

You get the feeling now that Det is going to score on everyone. But, I don't see Best tearing it up against that front 7. But, I would say that he has a very good game as a receiver. Prob a lot of screens and dump offs considering it is Hill behind center and that Minny should have success with their pass rush.

Carl (Miami)

A moron traded Ryan Matthews for Clinton Portis in my league...can I veto it

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

Wow-you should. Funny you brought that up. I traded for Mathews at about midnight last night. R Bush got hurt and I was real light at RB. Have Rodgers at QB, but picked up Vick last week. Traded Vick, M Bush, and Welker (who I love) for Mathews and TO and a throw in guy that I will cut. If you care...

Jack (Miami, FL)

Any way Cowboys can beat the Tesanx?

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

Sure. Desperate team-you would think! D Brown is suspended-that makes blind side protection a real chore vs. Ware and Spencer.

Jeremy (Rockland)

Matt, I have both Dustin Keller and Jermichael Finley on my fantasy team, who do i start/sit this week? Thanks.

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

Look at you-those were the two guys I drafted for TE as well. Finley! NEVER bench him.

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

Okay, that is probably enough on the fantasy. That can be a huge can of worms if I start taking those questions. But those two hit me close to home with my squad.

Mike (Boca Raton)

You should be proud of your prognostication of the Steelers D, but how much longer can they keep it up. Things have to get better when 7 returns, but even 16 should be able to put up something other than FGs, right?

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Thanks-they are amazing. Why won't they keep it up? Unless there a lot of injuries that is. It is an elite D. PGH should be 3-1 when Ben returns...then-look out.

CC (Atlanta)

Falcons over the Saints this weekend... you feeling it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

I am feeling it. Actually on Tuesday's podcast, I picked ATL-but I thought it was being played in Atlanta! Screwed that up. Still, I might take the Falcons. Picked them to win the division and frankly, NOrls hasn't been all that impressive.

Corey (D.C.)

Tell Carl that in Fantasy Football there are no unfair trades...only idiot GMs that accept them. No trade should ever be vetoed unless there was collusion.

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Actually-I am sorta part of that mindset as well.

Greg (Green Bay)

Epic Monday night game forthcoming...who wins?

Matt Williamson
  (12:11 PM)

I agree-very excited about it as well. But I will take the Pack. They are #1 on my power rankings and I feel like we haven't seen their best O performance yet. It could come under the bright lights.

Mike (Boca Raton)

Just want somebody with some professional certification like yourself to validate that the Steelers D made both Chris Johnson and Vince Young quit (mentally) by half way through the third quarter.

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Quit is a big word. But-it isn't that far off either.

Corey (D.C.)

Matt- are you concerned at all with the lack of production from Brent Celek so far after 2 games? Is he having to stay in and block more or just not being seen by Vick?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

I do think he is more of Kolb's guy than Vick's, but I also think his red zone production is sure to skyrocket. They really don't have great size at WR and he excels near the stripe. Hard to predict that O with Vick behind center, as everything about his game is unpredictable.

Mike (Boca Raton)

Will Tom Brady, Wes Welker, and Randy Moss be able to carry the Pats the rest of the season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

No question about it

brian (paradise)

Forsett 4 carries for 24 yards on 1st drive of the game then he only gets 4 carries the rest of the game ,how bout Forsett to the Packers I think he could do well there

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Wow, I think he would tear it up in GBay. I really like him. I think Sea is nuts to limit his carries as much as they have. The guy can play-let him.

Mike (Danbury, CT)

Who is the best young WR (less than 2-3 years in the league) in your eyes? Nicks, Maclin, Desean Jackson, or somebody else (purposely leaving Crabtree off the discussion for now)

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

It is pretty tough to argue with D-Jax for right now. But I think I would take Nicks for the long haul.

Mike (Boca Raton)

Will the Ravens Oline get it in gear to help out Flacco, the triplets, and Ray Rice?

Matt Williamson
  (12:15 PM)

It is certainly a worry-actually have been saying it for a while. I still don't understand moving Gaither and Oher. They need Gaither to get healthy-he can play too.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

MW: Whether Vick is truly the right starter for Philly remains to be seen, but do you think someone else is pulling the strings in Philly? For Reid to come out and say Kolb was the starter, then flip flop that fast reeks of someone else trumping his decision.

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

I hadn't thought of that, but you could be right. Very difficult for us to speculate and Reid-like anyone else-does have the right to change his mind.

Logan (Maryland)

Can Jay Cutler throw for 4000 yards 30 Td's 15 Picks this year

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

I will take the OVER on all three categories.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

VJax update??

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Haven't heard. Eerily quiet! Today is the big day right? 4:00? Would imagine that Minny, STL and Wash are all very interested.

Juan (St Louis)

How do you see the Rams v Skins game playing out this weekend and do you think Bradford will be able to handle the Skins D?

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

I don't LOVE the Skins D. I think Bradford will have his ups and downs-like every game prob this season-but I also doubt that the game ever looks too big for him. Love his make up.

todd (Alaska)

Matt, in your scouting days, who was the one player that was just a can't-miss, who had the "it" factor?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Many examples, but I did help recruit Larry Fitzgerald to Pitt and was there for his two years. Watching him in high school, military school, every day at practice and the games, it wasn't difficult at all to realize that he was about as close to a can't-miss guy as there is. It was awesome to watch to be honest. Also a great person.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

MW: What is wrong with the Cardinals' Defense? On paper, they have Pro-Bowl caliber players in Wilson, DRC, and Dockett and I thought the play of the secondary and front 3 would mask the weakness of the LB corps. What gives??

Matt Williamson
  (12:20 PM)

That shocks me a bit too. Their pass rush is weak for sure, but I also think that the O's ineptitude is wearing on that D too, which isn't particularly deep. That whole team stunk bad in ATL, but ATL is not a joke. Am expecting the D to improve though. Love their DL.

Mike (Boca Raton)

Please assess Carson Palmer's skills these days. I haven't seen much in terms of game footage, but from what I have seen, I'm not all that impressed.

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Not at all. It seems like all I talked about is Palmer during the preseason. I feel like I am one of the only ones out there that thinks that he might now be a liability. Misses open guys. Makes bad decisions. Doesn't move well. No more excuses for him. He is hurting his team.

brent (montana)

Whats your take on Alex Smiths game Monday?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

He was great. On point. Sustained offense. Played within himself. That has to be his formula.

Pat (Ny)

How do you pan out the AFC East this year. Any wildcards from the East?

Matt Williamson
  (12:23 PM)

Before the season I predicted: 1. NE 2. MIA 3. NYJ 4. BUFF...with Miami making a wild card. I still feel confident about that. Sticking with it.

Lawrence Foster (Roswell, NM)

Matty Ice greetings from alien land! My question is don't the Bills have to at least call the Eagles about Kolb? What would it take for us to get him. We are a pathetic team with a pathetic offense with the worst QB situation in the league.

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

I would bet it would take Buff's #1 in this next draft...which could be 1st overall! Vick is a free agent after the year and honestly, he isn't the long term answer. Just doesn't fit Ried's system. But..maybe they should call about Vick! Vick is more of a move QB like Gailey likes.

Mike (Boca Raton)

Better bodyslam in week 2: Rolando Mcclain or James Harrison?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

James had help, but that was a heck of a group effort! King Kong Bundy-esque

Michael (OK)

Who do you think the most physically gift QB in the NFL, I would prolly go Cutler, the 59 yard pass was the most impressive throw this weekend, or Roethlisberger. Russel excluded because not in the NFL anymore.

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

I was asked this here a few weeks ago. I did say Russell if he were still in the NFL. Cutler is VERY tough to argue with. Flacco might be #2. Stafford is in the conversation for sure. Big Ben is certainly no slough either and I do think he uses his ability more functionally than those others. What do I mean by that? Ben uses his size/strength to make great throws with 285 D Linemen hanging on him as he is rolling out. No one does that like him.

Paul (Knoxville)

Any chance the Saints could look to sign Larry Johnson considering the Bush injury?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

They signed L Betts today-not that Betts is anything to get excited about. Johnson is rather terrible. Could be a long 6 weeks (or so) without Bush, but those guys aren't going to make a big difference. Would look around at team's practice squads though for fresh legs.

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Stones "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'"...blasting it right now. What a great jam.

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

Mick is just so sick

Ed (DC)

Hard to remember a more impressive catch than the one hander Moss hauled in Sunday. Any recent comparisons?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Short term memory is not my greatest asset, but that was simply amazing-no question about it.

Shane (Los Angeles, CA)

MW: Is a call to AJ Smith on McNeil one that Jerry Jones has to make? I do not think McNeil puts the Cowboys in the SB, but guaranteed what they have now will keep them out of it. (PS: I think the Cowboys are 2-3 wins better with a different coach...Cowher?)

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

That team REALLY needs a spark/leadership. As for McNeil, I think he is a bit overrated. Surely he would help though. Do you move Free to RT or ask McN to move? Either would be better than Barron/Columbo for sure. The key to that team to me is their running game. They need to get it re-established. I would start by using Felix more. See what he can really do. Barber is getting on my nerves lately.

BSB (Philly)

Where has the Chat Ref been?

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

That is another good question. He usually only pops out when he is truly needed and when one of you gets lippy. As of late, you guys have been behaving.

Yogi (Alaska)

How close is Miles Austin to Larry Fitz and Andre? I think he is better than Marshall, Desean, Wayne, and anyone else outside those 2.

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Just doesn't have the total body of work yet. Still hasn't been a full time starter for 16 games yet! But I am with you. He is elite. GREAT player who should only get better. I would put him right there with Marshall behind Fitz and Andre J, but Austin is much more of a vertical threat than Marshall. They are more specialty guys, but you can't overlook Moss or Welker either.

Ryan (San Diego)

The Chargers aren't going to trade Mcneill

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

I tend to agree with you. Gotta think that V Jax moves today though.

Joe Flacco (Camden Yards)

Why am I so terrible?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Bro, you have been bad. Those D's you faced certainly are not forgiving, but more is required from you. The protection also has been suspect, but this is on you. Step it up.

Sidney Rice (South Carolina)

I am better than Miles Austin

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Sidney, You are exceptional. Again, want to see it for a bigger frame of reference. But I lean slightly to Austin.

Javs (California)

Do you think the Niners are as good as they think they are??

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

I am not sure how good they think that they are, but I think they are good enough to easily win that horrendous division and then probably lose in the first round of the playoffs.

M Colston (Hofstra)

I'm better than Austin.

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

No way. Very good player, but not great. Not that Dallas has a poor passing attack, but imagine Austin in NOrls! WAY more of a vertical threat. I also don't trust Colston to stay healthy.

Brian (MN)

Will Vjax really help Farve? If we can get him.

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Prob not in the first game or two, but overall, yes. BIG TIME deep threat. Maybe most importantly, he would allow Harvin to move back to the slot where he now belongs. Would open up a lot of room overall. But-I am not sold one way or another yet on Favre. Can he still do it? Not sure we know that yet.

David (NY NY)

To me, Favre's arm looks shot. Will you be shocked if Childress feels he has to bench him, and that leads to an in-season (tearful, of course) retirement?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Doubt such a benching would ever actually go down. His arm doesn't look as good. Has to really load up for the deep ball. It brings up the question about his ankle too. If he isn't planting well or able to really push off it, that could be the issue.

brian (paradise)

Miles Austin better than Desean Jackson not on this planet ,Desean is open so much and they dont get him the ball

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

There is some truth to that-even going back to last year with McNabb. I will still take Austin.

Ryan (SF)

Matt, do the Niners finally get on track with a big road W in KC this week?

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

I wrote that game up. Yes, I picked SF to win that one by a TD or so. Just a much better football team.

Vincent Jackson (Tijuana)

My body of work is bigger then Miles Austin. and we play with similiar QB's unlike Brandon Marshall who played with a substandard error prone Cutler or Sidney Rice who played with Favre who (last season didnt make any errors)

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

Both of you are tremendous deep threats. Prob give the edge there to Jackson. But I like Austin's overall game better. Better after the catch and in the short/intermediate areas.

Vorak (NYC)

Matt: Would you take Nicks over Austin?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

No. Love Nicks and I think that could be a conversation a year from now. But no-not yet.

Steve (Blacksburg, VA)

Real Colts run D.. week 1 or week 2?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Neither. That team is WAY different when they can play with a lead. I also think that they really struggle in the games that they game plan to have him and Bob Sanders gets hurt. They were dominated up front vs. Houston and didn't keep their gaps at all, but usually, they are much more fundamentally sound and really run to the ball.

Joe (DC)

Miles has 4 games of at least 10 catches and 100 yards in 14 games. Jerry Rice had 15 in 20 NFL seasons. Andre Johnson has 14 and is in his 8th season. Austin is ELITE

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

Pretty impressive. Let's not go comparing him-or anyone else-to Rice though!

Pete (Baltimore)

Matt, is Cooley going to have a huge year, and Celek a terrible year, both because of McNabb?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Tending to think that, but as I said earlier, I think Celek's production steps up a bit in the red zone. Cooley does look great-exceeding my expectations.

Joe (Michigan)

Do you think if the Bengals offense steps there game up they can go all the way?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Has to REALLY step up-esp at QB. They still need to be a run-first O with Benson behind a big powerful OL.

Todd (Mexico)

Can Shaun Hill play like he did last week vs Philly vs Vikes?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Worry about Minny's desperate state and their pass rush. Plus, I think Det has less success on the ground. That puts a lot of stress on Hill. Not expecting great things right now. Minny's D needs to take a similar mentality to the Steelers right now. The O just isn't working-so we will dominate. They can.

David (NY NY)

Where does Matt Schaub fit in a discussion of the league's best quarterbacks?

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

Certainly steadily rising. My top 6 are still 1. Peyton 2. Brady 3. Brees 4. Ben 5. Rivers 6. Rodgers...after that Schaub is in the conversation with Eli, Cutler, Romo etc. He could easily assert himself at #7 on my list-let's see him stay healthy though. That still REALLY worries me about Schuab

Tom (LA)

Why is Roy Williams still on the field when Dez Bryant is that much better?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Bet that is about to change. Remember, Dez missed almost all the preseason and didn't play football last year! Give him a few weeks.

scott (palm city)

could you rank your top 7 qbs in order?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

I thought I just did that-at least the top 6. Scroll back Scott

Todd (Mexico)

What do you think about Sando's decision to take Rodgers off of his MVP watch, and add Cutler and Vick? A bit premature?

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

I didn't know that he did, but yes. Adding Cutler is warranted, but I would put Rodgers over Vick.

Todd (Mexico)

Can my Seahawks pull off the HUGE upset of Chargers? 12th mand will certainly help the pass rush...

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Could happen. Such a tough place to play. Just ask the Niners. Plus, I am not a huge SD believer here. Can Mathews control the game on the ground and take the fans out of it? Maybe. Will prob take SD, but considering the Hawks as my upset special. But...I keep coming back to the fact that Seattle just isn't very talented or good.

Knapp (Green Bay)

Is LT the premier back in New York?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

He is proving me wrong-for now. Thought he was very very done. He looks good. Can catch the ball-unlike Greene. I do think Greene prob asserts himself as LT's body begins to fail him going forward.

B Marshall (Miami)

I am better then Austin

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

Debatable. You are open when you are covered like few in the game. Austin is more of a big play guy.

Todd (Mexico)

LOL. Don't pull any punches, bro. (Seahawks not talented or good). Watch Earl Thomas, tho. #29 can ball.

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

He can. No question. Just added him to my rookie report and I am guessing he continues to move up.

Kevin (Texas State University)

What is with Buffalo's lack of any QB concern, since Kelley retired?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Poor talent evaluation. Lack of dedicating enough resources to the most important position. Real bad management.

Joe (DC)

What do you make of Heyward-Bey? He shouldnt have been a top ten pick, but he probably was a 1st rounder. He has big time talent. Could you see him blssoming with Gradkowski?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

He is coming around and no, he should not have been that high of a draft pick-but it also isn't his fault that he was! However, I see him being more of a vertical outside the numbers guy-and that favors Campbell (if the Raiders could only protect) more than Grad.

Derrick Morgan (Nashville)

I am better than Jason Pierre Paul and Brandon Graham why dont I get any love. If i keep pace ill have 15 sacks

Matt Williamson
  (12:57 PM)

You have been quite strong. Need to prob add you to my Rookie Report. Still, not a full time player. Not that those other two are though.

Ted Thompson (Lambeau Front Office BLV)

Should I go against my style and pull the trigger on Lynch or Fred Jackson?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

I would-Jackson way more than Lynch. You have a big time contender there in GB. Be aggressive. I really worry about Jackson for the long term. Didn't even really carry the load in college. Need a fresh RB for December-I doubt that is Jackson.

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Folks-I am out. GREAT chat today. Really enjoyed it. Take care all. Listen to Football Today this week-could use some feed back there as well! Always appreciated.
