Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session. I'm assuming this will be mostly, if not all, about football and not baseball, but I will be on the lookout anyway. Hope you're having a good day, thanks for showing up and let's get going!

Tyler B (Dallas,TX)

Cutler has been looking great so far, Do i trust him vs GB? Who has a better game, Cutler or GB defense?

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

I trust Jay Cutler, and named him a top 10 QB for the week. Really, the Packers can be thrown on. They played the Bills last week, so it might be tough to tell. Cutler will throw interceptions, maybe 18-20 or so, but he'll get many, many yards and TDs.

Mike Turner (Dumpsville)

Was able to trade Turner, Marshall, and Eli for Rogers, Beanie, and Mario. Gonna be thin at RB just can't trust Turner anymore. Who wins in the end?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Why can't you trust Michael Turner? Because he left one game early with a sore hammy? I trust him. He's going to go wild this week... I'd rather have the haul you traded away, though Aaron Rodgers is terrific.

Mike (AZ)

Am I the only one cursing Coach Wisenhunt for playing Beanie in the final preseason game, for no reason, and now watching him miss the first 2 weeks?!?!?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

Players get hurt all the time, and in different situations. I still think Beanie will have a strong season. He hasn't fallen behind Hightower on any depth chart.

Chewbacca (Kashyyyk)

Is Peyton Hillis going to have better upside in the next few weeks than Harrison? Looking to drop one

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

Hard not to think Hillis has more value today, but I still believe Harrison will get his and be valuable this season. If I had to drop one, it would not be Harrison.

Lee (Atlanta)

Eric, with Bush's injury does Lance Moore who has not regained his pre-injury stats yet as a wr, have value since he will be returning punts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

I suppose, but I could also see an injury coming Moore's way, since it's happened before. I really don't think anyone wins much in the Bush injury situation... Ladell Betts does, as he just got signed!

Brian (Indianapolis)

Which side of this trade would you prefer? Jamaal Charles and Johnny Knox or Joseph Addai, Mark Clayton and Mike Williams (SEA).

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Probably the Addai side... Addai might be more valuable than Charles this season and I could see both Clayton and Williams beating out Knox. The Bears are gonna share the wealth... Knox leads the team with 11 targets, and that is not much.

Cedric Benson (IR)

Anyone thats owns me should have Bernard Scott because I never stay healthy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Benson seems healthy to me. He was healthy most of last season until the Bengals were home free. That said, Scott is one of the top 5 pure handcuffs.

Stevo (LBC) [via mobile]

Tough decision for me this week....play jahvid beast vs Min or go with Pierre Thomas vs Atl??!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

I ranked the rookie better this week, believe it or not. The full staff individual rankings are posted. I shocked myself putting Best at No. 9 RB.

Tyler B (Dallas,TX)

Carolina Steve Smith gets a new QB, Will this hurt or help his numbers? What kind of numbers could we expect?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Exactly the point of today's first blog, when I debunked that notion. Smith has had bad QB play for years, and hey, maybe Clausen can play? Can't be worse than Moore, Delhomme...

Tyler B (Dallas,TX)

What is wrong with Mathews everything that could go wrong is going wrong, any thought of him being benched?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Nothing is wrong with him. Just a slow start, a minor injury as well. He'll be fine.

Wes Welker (Endzone)

I will score again this week against the Bills, maybe twice. Owners should definitely start me as a flex over Calvin Johnson or Cedric Benson! (??)

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

We shall see when the flex rankings come out Thursday, but I know Welker is going to rank well. Should be right around the range of those guys.

Lee (my desk)

heard a rumor that Farve is retiring...as in now.

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Wow, haven't heard that one before... oh wait, I have.

Alex R (UofA)

Would you trade Michael Turner and Hines Ward for MJD?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Probably. Jones-Drew is the best fantasy player of the 3. But depends on how much depth you have, too.

Brian (SC)

I was offered Shonn Greene and Fred Jackson for Hightower and Crabtree do I try to put the trade off a few days to see what happens in week 3 or take it now?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I would make the deal now. Hightower's value is tied to Beanie's health, and Crabtree has been ordinary. Greene could still be a monster, you have to get him for that low price.

Rick (Philly)

I had the first waiver claim this week and I have Michael Turner. I opted to pick up D. Thomas from Denver instead of Snelling. I have Austin, Boldin, and Crabtree as my WR options. I trust Turner will be okay. Did I make the correct acquisiton?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I would have done the same thing. It's very possible Turner won't miss any more parts of games and Snelling will do nothing. Thomas could be the Denver No. 1 WR... could be. Too early to say.

Matthew (Nashville)

Should I trade Jahvid Best for Larry Fitzgerald? I also have Foster, P. Thomas, and J. Addai at RB position.

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

Yeah, I would make that trade very, very quickly. Wow! People are actually offering trades like this?

Steve (Cleveland)

Baseball!!! Will Matt LaPorta finally realize some his potential in 2011?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Baseball! I think LaPorta hits 25 home runs next season... yes, he will be good.

Vincent Jackson (San Diego)

If I don't get signed today, I'm sitting out the year.

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

I agree. He needs to get dealt right now to the Vikings... that would keep Favre playing, no?

Dillon (Seattle)

Who do you see producing more fantasy points this season...Matt Ryan or Mike Vick?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Definitely Vick now. He should be a top 10 QB. The blog I just posted ranked Vick against his peers for the season, and he did well.

Matt (Philly)

EK as a Birds fan.....do you like THE decision?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

No, no I do not... but apparently I am in the minority on thinking Kolb can play. Stunned Andy Reid changed his mind from Monday to Tuesday... he must have been pressured. Vick should be good though. I can argue this is a 9-7 team with either Vick or Kolb.

Matt ((Raleigh))

Eric, how do you see Mike Wallace faring the rest of the season? Is it being too hopeful to expect WR1 numbers once Big Ben returns?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

I think that is asking for a lot, since Hines Ward is still there and clearly productive. But Wallace could sneak into the top 20 I suppose.

Tina (tampa, fl)

your thoughts please on..dropping M.Bush for Keiland Williams,

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

I know why I keep hearing Keiland's name today, because Larry Johnson was real-life cut Tuesday, but I wouldn't assume Keiland will replace Portis anytime soon and that he can play. Keep Bush.

David (Texas)

Would you give up Vick for S. Smith (NYG), if you have Cutler?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

I would. I've got Cutler one spot ahead of Vick for the season.

Felix (SC)

Why does DHB of the Raiders get no love? He had 13 targets last week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Because half of those targets probably bounced in front of him. OK, I do think Heyward-Bey has promise, but I haven't seen an Oakland QB be capable yet.

Mo (Chicago)

Did you like what you saw (6 targets) last week from S. Williams in AZ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

I think he could beat out Breaston eventually, or be an obvious add if something happens to Larry Fitz.

Matt ("Work")

In the next hour VJack is a member of this team ____?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Team unemployed.

Eric (CO)

Considering Wells' injury situation and history, would you rather have him or McFadden the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Still Beanie. For now. It's still only 2 weeks...and we've seen Run DMC have issues before.

Rick (City by the bay)

Dropped Aromashadou for mike williams of seattle, awaiting the EK stamp of approval

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Seems reasonable to me... not that you need any approval!

tom (boston)

do you drop either crabtree or bowe for mike wallace?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

No, not yet, but in two weeks if Crabtree hasn't done anything, I probably would. I judge Bowe in a different class here.

Shane (Seattle)

I just traded Foster for MJD. You like?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Oh my. Sound the alarms!

Doug (MA)

Crap, so now I would be the third person to call you EK... but still, top 5 is good stuff! Need help picking 2: MBIII, BJax, JStew, BJacobs, and JSnelling???

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

It's Jackson versus Stewart, because I think Barber is in, and you can't make a case for Jacobs or Snelling unless there's a turn in the Turner injury case. I go Jackson.

Todd (Texas)

ARGHHH!! Lost Ryan Grant for the year and I have Greene and Harrison as my other backs. I just traded for Portis, am I doomed?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

You might be this week, but no, I think this can still work out. People, look at Harrison's December 2009. That could start happening at any time now, and it would alter fantasy history! OK, but it would be interesting.

Mark (Denver)

I am weak at the #3 WR position, Jacoby Jones or Louis Murphy

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Well, can't say this makes you less weak, but I would go Jones.

Mike (Kansas City)

"Oh my. Sound the alarms!" to the MJD and Foster trade. I'm confused! Is that your stamp of approval or indifference?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Well, neither. Doesn't matter to me what trades happen... but I will say I'm stunned an MJD owner would deal him for Foster. I'd much rather have MJD. If that didn't come across as obvious...

David (Work)

Foster for MJD? Really? So for those of us in leagues where people have brains and would never make such a deal: Charles for Addai?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Knowing what we know, I think we'd have to take Addai. There might not be an end to this Thomas Jones stuff, really.

Sean (Tucson)

In reference to the Keiland Williams question- where would you rank him with Betts, R Jennings?

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

After both. Betts could be the TD guy for the Saints, like Mike Bell was last year... and if Jennings gets a shot in Jax, he could do well. I don't have confidence a backup Redskins RB can emerge.

Phil (Somewhere)

Drop Bowe and pick up Holmes with the thought that edwards would be sitting some extended time with the recent news? Good move or trust in bowe?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I trust Bowe. Not sure why he's on some fantasy hot seat today. I'd take Bowe over Holmes.

Mark (Greensboro NC)

How do you feel about starting a RB and WR from the same team?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Generally OK. Depends who they are, the matchup, etc. If I own Turner and I get offered Roddy White for junk, I don't turn it down.

Eik (the city)

any news are Lynch?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Nope. I don't expect any, either. The Bills are going nowhere, so they are in no hurry at all to move him. Plus, Lynch could end up starting. Spiller has looked awful.

Andy (Chicago)

REALLY? Betts is ownable? The guy didn't even have a team one week ago.

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Well, a week ago Reggie Bush didn't have a broken leg. Things change. I don't think any of the RBs in that question are 10-team ownable. But that wasn't the question!

John (Watford City)

Maclin or Dez Bryant? We get return TD's for the individuals.

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Maclin. How many punt return TDs are you expecting Dez to score? Maybe 1 or 2?

Coach Haley (KC, MO)

How can you trust Bowe when I can't get Cassel to?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

They're 2-0. When they're 3-6, watch how much Cassel throws the ball.

Betty White (Georgia)

Concerned about Brent Celek with Michael Vick going forward. Am i overreacting? Tony Gonzalez was just dropped to waivers in our league. Maybe Brandon Pettigrew?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

Not concerned about Celek at all. Vick's gonna throw plenty. Gonzalez is going to be fine as well. Such a lack of patience. No way I'd go Pettigrew over Tony G.

Ian (Ohio)

your last keiland williams comment just proves you are the worst fantasy analyst of the group...did you forget the coach is mike shannahan?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Really, so you know for sure Williams is going to be good? Shanahan is sticking with Portis... he's stuck with him before.

Rob (Salt Town)

How do people not remember Vick to Crumler??

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

The Philly weapons are no more or less valuable with Vick at QB. One could argue they were all a bit overvalued to start with, frankly.

Adam (Mile High)

Whats your thoughts on Sam Bradford?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Gonna throw for a lot of yards this year, like 3,500-plus. Also gonna get picked off 20 times or more. But he will make things interesting, and we will be discussing him all year.

Miles Austin (Dallas)

I am the #1 receiver this year. Bar none.

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Wouldn't shock me at all. Nothing against Andre J, but Austin is a beast, too, and Romo has no running game to lean on.

Kevin (FL)

My RB bench is a sleeping giant...right? M. Bush, F. Jones, D. Brown

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Well, um... ok. All 3 have upside, major upside. Just need health and opportunity. I'd rank them Brown, Jones and then Bush.

Zach (Phoenix)

Why are you so high on Best this week on the road facing the Vikings D?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

If the Lions are gonna score, it's becoming obvious Best will either make the score, or get them close. And the Vikings have a very good defense, but if Best has a week like the opener, with 20 yards but a paif of scores, it's worth it.

Bob (NY)

EK, has Spiller looked awful or is it just because he hasn't gotten a chance? He only touched the ball something like 4 times last week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Combo of both. Not sure why he isn't getting more run, especially when the Bills should be rebuilding and see what they've got. Maybe they're showcasing Lynch.

James (Texas)

WHAT IF Portis gets hurt like always? Williams looks good right

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Sure, but if there's anything the Shanahan era has taught us, it's that he does NOT key on just one backup. He'll try out anyone. That's why I doubt any Wash RB puts up big numbers.

Randy Moss (New England)

I am on a team that is loaded with WR talent and thin at RB. Do you ever trade me for Ahmad Bradshaw?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Well no, but I would find a way to make it a fair deal and get enough back. Bradshaw isn't a safe top 10 RB. Moss is arguably No. 2 at WR, probably 3 or 4. You're giving up a lot.

jon (stl)

hey eric, great chats always!no ppr, do i trade arian and aj for chris johnson and brandon marshall?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Yes, I would make that deal. This might be the last time Chris Johnson has a bad week.

Alex (Philly)

Why don't you ever answer any of my questions?Of course this is the one you'll actually answer so what do you think of Fitz going forward? Can owners expect elite production with such an awful QB situation?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

I think Anderson is just good enough and clearly safe enough in the job to make Fitz a top 10 WR. He's gonna throw. And he can throw deep. I'd worry more about Fitz's injury potential than Anderson harming his value.

Teddy (Work)

Baseball!!! We are keeping 8 in our league. OPS w/o HR's and QS w/o wins. I am keeping Tulo, Pedroia, Ichiro, Heyward, Cutch, Braun, and King Felix. Torn between Kendry Morales and Liriano. Thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Hmmm, top 20 starting pitcher or one of many first basemen who could hit 25 home runs, and one coming off a serious knee injury. Keep Liriano.

James (Texas)

EK, even if you don't answer another one of my questions today, you're the man ... One of the greats buddy.

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Thank you, James... hey, in this line of work, I realize some people will hate because they can. We're here for them as well.

Bill (NJ)

Mohammed Mossaqui or Derrick Mason for this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

I could see Massaquoi getting more yards, but overall value, I have to take Mason, especially in a PPR. The Ravens just played the Jets and Bengals on the road... can't get worse for them. Buy low.

Diego (Chicago)

EK - Dig your level-headed POV on fantasy moves, which often lends itself to hyperbole.... but if you'll allow me..... OH MY GOD IS JOE FLACCO A BUST??? I am willing to stick with him with Roethlisberger on my bench, but I can get Schaub for Crabtree/Portis - Is this a no-brainer? Thanks in advance

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Flacco is not at all a bust, and hey, I ranked him the worst on the staff, like No. 12 overall. Look at his schedule. It gets better. But if you can rob someone like that for Schaub, do it!

Hank (NC)

Which WR do you want: Royal, Mark Clayton, Louis Murphy, Walter or Mike Williams (TB)???

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Mike Williams first, then Clayton. I see both getting 1,000 yards.

Matt (SC)

Love how everyone overreacts after only 2 weeks. Should I sit Hines Ward for TB Mike Williams until Big Ben comes back?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Nope. I wouldn't, and I'm a big Williams fan. It doesn't matter who starts for the Steelers at QB.

Marques (Va)

Is it safe to drop V. Jax if he isnt traded today?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I wouldn't say that. Chargers might trade him tomorrow..they have weeks until the deadline. Or they might sign him and use him as a starter. Today is only a big deal because he would be eligible to play sooner.

Chris (Ranches, Utah)

It's not overreacting when you're 0-2, gotta be aggressive sometimes you know...

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Well, I'd say being 0-2 means nothing, unless you truly have an awful team. I have a team that is leading the league in scoring, but is 0-2. I'm not worried.

aTe (cube)

Can we expect a.foster to repeat his preseason performance against dallas, or should we prepare for schaub to shred the secondary like cutler?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

I'd say do yourself a favor and disregard everything you saw in the preseason, because none of it matters. Foster is capable of a monster game at any time, but as we just saw, so is Schaub.

Steve (PTown)

I have Fred Taylor on my bench. Would you drop him for Michael Bush?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

No, I would not. I don't see McFadden losing the job if he plays well, but who knows when Bush gets a chance.

Ryan (Boston)

Trade DeAngelo Williams for Brandon Jackson and Clinton Portis?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Oh no, I wouldn't do that. Why would you do that? Williams could be one of the top RBs in the league if he gets going. He's done it before. What has Jackson ever done, or Portis in the past few years?

Colin (Fort Collins, Co)

Cheers to your rational fantasy advice. Most analysts are seemingly reactive any given week. What RB and WR are you personally (or would) targeting as buy-low candidates right now?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Well, there are a lot of ways to win. I'd say MJD, Rice, Forte, DeAngelo, Fred Jackson jump to mind, and at WR Wallace, Colston, Bowe and in a deep league the Arizona Williams.

Jason (Atlanta)

Hey Eric! Congrats on your Hall of Fame induction! I can play 3 of these 4 RB's this week. Who gets left out? Charles, McCoy, Rice, or Foster? Maybe Charles against the Niners D?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Thank you! Charles is out. Doesn't matter the opponent, for him it's about opportunity. Unfortunately.

Joe (Philly)

Would you drop Mike Williams (SEA) for either Demaryius Thomas or Marshawn Lynch? Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

No, I would not. He's probably the top Seattle WR, and yes in this case I think that matters some.

Matt (Indiana)

Got DeAngelo for Snelling. Does that beat the Foster for MJD trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

You're making that up. Though I'm sure someone out there would offer that... hey, you never know.

Dan (DC)

Any idea why TMR ranked Forte SIXTH!?!? Seems a bit out of place...

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

I can see it. ESPN Fantasy projected Forte well this week, and I see him having a good game running the ball.

C.J. Spiller (Buffalo)

Am I droppable yet? I know it is only two games, but I am burning a roster spot that can help my team.

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

I wouldn't drop him, but you do what you gotta do! You have to let situations like this play themselves out some.

Jared (GA)

What are your thoughts on Harvin? I can pick him up if i drop Meachem

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Oh yeah, you should own Harvin there.

Mark V (Morristown, NJ)

Freeman as a #2 quarterback in a 2-QB league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

A little premature, but he's not far off.

Jonathan Stewart (Carolina)

Will I have any production this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

When he's the MVP of November... yes. Just wait, the Panthers will run the ball well.

Greg Jennings (WI)

Am I a better start than Malcolm Floyd this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Every week. And not to take anything from Floyd.

Jay Cutler (Chicago)

Trade me for Joe Flacco AND Beanie Wells?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

On that one I would say no... but if Beanie shows health I would.

Shonn Greene (New Jersey)

Would you rather have me or Darren McFadden going forward?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Greene.

Dwotnsfinest1 (The Windy City)

Who at flex this week- B.Jackson, F.Taylor, M.Clayton?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

BJax.

Mike (Kansas City)

LIGHTNING ROUND! Ward or Mike Williams (Sea.) this week?

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

Ward.

Eric Karabell
  (4:01 PM)

OK, that is about all the time we have for today. Thanks so much for asking the thousands of questions today...wow. It's like fantasy football is popular or something. We couldn't do this without you! Have a great day, good luck in Week 3 and we'll see ya...
