Chat with Matt Mosley

Jay (Texas)

Can the Boys beat the Texans if they fix their problems?

Mosley
  (12:01 PM)

You aren't going to fix all your problems in one week, but sure, they can beat the Texans. Remember what happened when everyone counted them out at New Orleans last year?

Andy (Ptown VA)

Matt-Are the Redskins for real? If they can get that D goin like against the cowboys, and the offense goin like against Houston, is it feasible we could at least compete for the division?? HAIL

Mosley
  (12:03 PM)

This is looking like a pretty weak division about now, so it's sort of up for grabs. That was a gut-wrenching loss. I'll be anxious to see how the Skins respond. With Doughty back there trying to help with Andre Johnson, you had to know there were going to be some issues. And Horton wasn't up to the task either.

dallasisdone_no (DC)

Really like your work here. Do you think dallas has a chance to bounce back and make run like NYG back in 07?

Mosley
  (12:04 PM)

There's always a "chance." I visit with Jason Witten quite a bit and I know he truly believes they'll get this thing going. But right now there's just not a lot of chemistry on either side of the ball. And the cows are showing patience with this kicker for no apparent reason. Two games, two key misses. Do we really need to see more?

Robert (Charlotte, NC)

How down should Redskin fans be after Sunday's loss? It seems that the offense is starting to come together and everyone knew the defense would take some time. It seems like the Redskins are a lot farther along than anyone thought they would be at this point. What are your thoughts?

Mosley
  (12:06 PM)

You have to feel good about that offense. Donovan McNabb had a superb game. So yes, the Skins are a little ahead of schedule. But that loss will leave a mark.

Kevin Mills (Randolph AFB, TX)

Matt, love your articles. I have been a Redskins fan since the Colts left Baltimore. Being a Skins fan and living in Texas isn't the easiest thing. So, what do you see as the biggest issue the Redskins have defensively? What was it that caused us to lose the lead we had? it almost seemed to me that the Skins went into a Prevent defense and I still feel all a prevent Defense does is prevent you from wining. Thanks. Kevin Mills

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

Kevin, thanks for reading. I think the Skins need to get Kareem Moore back from this knee injury. He looked great in training camp and he'll help solidify the back end of that defense. The Texans' tempo during that comeback was such that Jim Haslett's group wasn't really able to counter. I think you'll see them settle down and do a better job against the pass. And contrary to what I said going into the game, I think Hayensworth could've helped disrupt that passing game.

Andy Reid (Philadelphia)

How long do I give Kevin Kolb until I pull him for Vick?

Mosley
  (12:10 PM)

Andy, you invested all the time and money in Kolb. You're going to have to live with some of the rough patches. But yes, it makes things infinitely more difficult when you have a backup of Vick's caliber breathing down Kolb's neck.

Andy (California)

Matt,Any update on Trent Williams? I had to order another drink when Heyer came in, and with due cause because he and Alex Barron apparently went to the same off-season camp to learn choke holds...

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

Barron will be appearing at Dallas' famous Sportatorium to show off that choke hold, which is a variation from Fritz Von Erich's claw. Trent Williams will be fine. No structural damage, according to the MRI. Great news for Skins fans.

Andy (California)

Buy or Sell. Redskins best team in the division after week 2.

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

Buy

Andy (California)

Hey Matt,First you must be applauded for picking the Giants to win the division and not buying into what seems to be an overly media hyped Dallas team. However the giants failed last week against the colts. Since the Redskins played almost even with the Texans, and the Texans beat the colts. Does that mean the Redskins should match up pretty well against the Giants this season?

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

It's too early to make sweeping judgments on any of these teams. But I think pretty much any team in the league was going to get waxed by Peyton and the Colts the other night. The Giants' season wasn't hinging on that one game. But the Colts were in a different situation. They were the team with more to lose. I can almost give the Giants a pass in that game.

Joey (SC)

Are you liking what you see from the Redskins? It all looks good except for the running game. Any chance the Redskins get Brandon Jacobs? haha Keep talking about the 'Skins on the blog. Thanks

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

Redskins already have the market cornered on the backs who peaked in '07. And plus, Snyder is worried about the legal ramifications of employing a man whose helmet can slip off his little finger and end up 10 rows into the stands.

Andy (California)

Matt,Redskins Rushing Offense? 107 yards in 2 weeks. Portis looked slow, Larry Johnson looked confused. Does this mean Shanny is going to abandon the run all season?

Mosley
  (12:17 PM)

Shanny will get back to leaning on the running game. It will happen this very weekend.

Chris (Staten island, NY)

Matt, I know it's a long season and way premature to go crazy over Dallas 0-2 start, but with Superbowl expectations going into this year, do you think Phillips/Garrett can survive a 7-9 or 6-10 season?

Mosley
  (12:19 PM)

There are so many unknowns with the potential lockout looming. I don't think Jerry wants to pay Phillips $3-$4 million to sit around and help Bum run cattle out in Goliad. And he loves having Phillips around. So Phillips might be able to survive a losing record.

Chris (Staten Island, NY)

Matt, with all the pieces seemingly in place for Dallas except for the O line, if the Cowboys can get Logan Mankins for a 2nd round pick, don't you think that's a move the have to make? He's easily one of the top 5 guards in the league and at age 28 should have another 4-5 year of excellent play ahead of him especially when considering the Cowboys track record of drafting OLs.

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

I like the player but no one at Valley Ranch has indicated to me that the Cowboys have any interest at this time.

Damien (Philly)

Hey Matt, the Eagles signed Joique Bell off the Bills practice squad. First what do you think of the signing, the word is he lit it up in preseason at Buffalo and second who do you think the Eagles will axe to make room on the roster?

Mosley
  (12:22 PM)

This could be a Bell for a Bell situation. I don't know much about Joique Bell. The Eagles are leaving some fairly well-known pass-rushers inactive each week. Take a peek at those names, too.

Patrick (NYC)

Are the Giants coaches at fault for the debacle in Indy? Seems to me that they made no adjustments and had the wrong personnel.

Mosley
  (12:24 PM)

I think everyone's at fault. The Giants didn't have any answers for Dallas Clark. And it didn't help that David Diehl was completely outmanned by Dwight Freeney. The Giants don't enter a game thinking Diehl will need a ton of help, but he could've used some. But again, I think the Colts were going to blow out most teams on this night. The Giants will be fine. Get these out of the way early. The NFC East looks pretty week right now, so it's not like New York has to worry about another team running off and hiding.

Will (TCU)

HOW BOUT THOSE HORNED FROGS???!!!

Mosley
  (12:25 PM)

I'd put them up against Alabama or anyone else from the SEC. Just an unbelievable football team, as the late, great Jim Wacker would say. We ran into a buzzsaw Saturday and I don't have a problem admitting it.

Andy (Fair Lawn, NJ)

Matt, do you think the Cowboys are spreading the ball around too much with their running backs? Choice is great for a 3rd option, but I feel like we'd be better if we just stuck to Jones and Barber.

Mosley
  (12:28 PM)

I don't know how you spread it around too much when a team has like 20 carries. If there's a problem, it's that Garrett seems hesitant to commit to the run. And when Marion Barber got something going in the first half, they replaced him with Felix. Not a lot of commitment at this point.

Mike Fluharty (Baltimore)

I mentioned LaRon Landry's switch to strong safety and his subsequent career day not getting a whole lot of attention. After a second extremely strong outing, what do you think his chances are at making the pro bowl?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

Have to do it in more than two games, but he's playing really well right now. I think Haslett has a good understanding of how to put him in positions to succeed, which to say near the line of scrimmage.

StruseLL (Philly)

I brandon Jacobs does get traded. Hypothetically, where?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

Perhaps the UFL.

Kevin ( NJ)

Hey Matt, what are the Giants going to do about the offensive line? Do you think we will see Andrews soong?

Mosley
  (12:31 PM)

I didn't think it would happen this early, but yes, it could happen. Andrews is apparently working like crazy to get ready. There are people within the Eagles organization who still think Andrews will be a Pro Bowler again. Would they want their names attached to those thoughts? Absolutely not.

Charles (Dallas)

have you considered writing a second screenplay about the North Dallas Bulls with team owner/GM Jesus James as your tragic villain/hero?

Mosley
  (12:31 PM)

completed

Matt Spencer (Richland, WA)

I liked that fullback the Eagles picked up from Seattle...now my question is Jason Peters really that good? I would like to see either of the two backups just to see if there could be more consistency!

Mosley
  (12:33 PM)

I think he's overrated for sure. But you don't want to see Dunlap or the rookie out there at this point. Peters simply isn't as athletic as he's been billed. And he's mistake prone. Other than that, he's a fine player.

Stouff ((Toronto))

After two weeks, how many wins do you give each team in the Beast at year end?

Mosley
  (12:33 PM)

Cowboys - 9Giants - 10Redskins - 7Eagles - 8

Lucus (Indiana)

Matt, to me it seems that Jason Garrett is killing drives with play calling. I know it's easy to speculate, but doesn't it seem like he has an agenda on every play instead of taking what the defense gives and adjusting?

Mosley
  (12:35 PM)

I thought he did a nice job of taking what the defense gave him last season. In the Skins game, they were trying too hard to get Dez Bryant acclimated. He and Romo need to figure out how to set a better tempo with this offense. Everything looks too hard right now. Look how the Saints and Niners were moving the ball late last night. Nothing looks that easy for the Cows.

Peyton (Minneapolis)

Matt love the blog. Is their a way Dallas could get a new HC and demote Wade Phillips to DC?

Mosley
  (12:35 PM)

Thanks. No.

Eric (Maryland)

Is it just me, or does it seem like the Redskins are more of a Kyle rather than a Mike Shanahan style offense? The running game is suffering.

Mosley
  (12:37 PM)

What did you expect with Clinton Portis and Larry Johnson as your primary backs? Did we think Shanny brought a magic time machine that he could turn back to the KC days when Whitlock was saying nice things about LJ.

Dave (D.C.)

Matt, where do you think things stand with Haynesworth? Think he will be traded/cut... maybe even actually show up and play with heart for once?

Mosley
  (12:38 PM)

I think he'll show up and play well this week. I really do. He's not an easy man to deal with, but occasionally he likes to remind us why he's such a big deal.

Jeff (atl)

Could the Giants get anything for Jacobs, and do you see any team interested?

Mosley
  (12:38 PM)

If he'll agree to move to LB, there might be a market for him.

Mrs. Mosley (Dallas)

You may think he's lost a step but isn't Clinton Portis the best blocking RB in the league? Did you see his block 50 yards downfield on Davis' catch Sunday?

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

I didn't realize the Skins were building offense around the best blocking tailback in the league. Forgive me.

Wade Phillips (Valley Ranch, Tx)

Matt, I don't like your line of questioning. That goes double for your buddy, Calvin Watkins too!

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

Nice!

Lucus (Indiana)

Is Jason Garrett the next HC for the 'Boys? (Please say no!)

Mosley
  (12:40 PM)

How could he be? There's no way -- unless this offense gets rolling.

Go Baylor! (Texas)

How big of an impact are we seeing about missed preseason time from Dez Bryant, and now that he's gotten a couple of games under his belt, do you think he will be more in sync with Romo going forward?

Mosley
  (12:42 PM)

I think you saw how dangerous he is with the ball in his hands. You have to continue getting him more and more reps. If he's comfortable with the game plan, then throw him in there as much as possible. He and Austin should be a devastating duo at some point this season. But it might happen too late to save this season.

Jon (Fairfield, CA)

Matt, be realistic. If Dallas does not make a long playoff run, how does Jerry keep the current coaching staff (barring all talk of lockout)?

Mosley
  (12:43 PM)

I was being realistic. People don't fully comprehend how much Jerry loves having Wade around.

matt (NY)

How does Wade's Def not get any turnovers, is he not agressive enough? Also why does Garett get so much rope, his only good year as OC was when Soprano was still around?

Mosley
  (12:44 PM)

The man's name is "Sparano." And yes, it turned out to be a big mistake not hiring him as HC. I like Wade, but Cowboys players feared and respected Tony Sparano. Just ask Jason Witten about that next time you see him at a restaurant.

Chris F. (Randolph,NJ)

Shady McCoy has been putting up some pretty good numbers since Vick took over @ QB. Do you see his production dropping once Kolb returns?

Mosley
  (12:45 PM)

They have to keep getting McCoy touches. That's not going to change. Good back who's learning how to effective in the passing game. But Sunday's win was all about Vick.

Pat (West Chester, PA)

Bigger Disappointment -- Ramses Barden or Travis Beckum?

Mosley
  (12:46 PM)

Barden right now.

TC (East Rutherford, NJ)

If i go 8-8 again this season and miss the playoffs, am I still the head coach for nyg?

Mosley
  (12:47 PM)

It just sort of depends on now it happens. If there are a ton of injuries and stuff out of his control, he'll still be the coach. But if the defense fails with this new DC, then he could be in danger. But honestly, I think the Giants win 10 games.

Justin (St Louis)

Will Bradford have much success against the Redskins this week or to you see them dominating our Offense?

Mosley
  (12:48 PM)

I think Orakpo smells blood in the water. He knows what it feels like to sack Bradford and the former UT star will have at least three of them Sunday. Long day for young Sam. Even Stoops couldn't save him from this onslaught.

Pat (West Chester, PA)

Better sophomore wide receiver - Nicks or Maclin?

Mosley
  (12:48 PM)

I like both players, but give me Maclin right now. Nicks has backed up a bit in recent weeks. Not sure what that's about.

Ed (Maryland)

How great would it be for the Redskins and Eagles to be 2-1 heading into their week 4 match up?

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

It's going to happen. And the Beast will be there to cover all the action.

Morris (Columbus, OH)

Matt, Felix "Wiggle" Jones doesn't appear to be as quick/explosive thus far this season. Everything I read during camp on him made it seem as though he hadn't lost a step despite the new weight/muscle. Just a couple tough games, or are the (limited) days of Jones making big plays in the rear-view mirror?

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

For now, I'll go with "couple tough games."

Andrew (NY)

Hey Matt, from watching the Giants game yesterday, I expected us to have trouble with Peyton's offense, but would you agree that we are having "concerns" now with our o-line?

Mosley
  (12:51 PM)

I'd use a stronger word than "concerns." Diehl had no chance against Freeney and the Giants were getting knocked off the ball in the running game. That would be my bigger concern. This line showed signs of age last season, but nothing's really been done about it. I don't know that Beatty's the answer either. Might be time to give Shawn Andrews a spin.

Rob (Atlanta)

How 'bout Matt Dodge Getting a little love? He had the best game for any of the Giants

Mosley
  (12:51 PM)

OK, there you go.

KB (Grand Prairie TX)

MOsley... How come u let Randy Galloway pick the boys to go to the Super Bowl and lose?

Mosley
  (12:52 PM)

I take no responsibility for what this man says.

Tim (Philly)

I'm starting to think that Tony Romo seriously over-achieved for two seasons. Did he hit his ceiling?

Mosley
  (12:52 PM)

Nah, not ready to make that statement.

biochemskinsfan (St. Louis)

Which Beast team, aside from Dallas, needs a win the most this week? Skins-bounce back from heartbreak; Giants- bounce back from slaughtering; Eagles- to avoid the biggest QB controversy in history, in a city that isn't known for being rationale?

Mosley
  (12:53 PM)

I think all three of those teams equally need a win. But for Kolb's sake, the pressure may be the most intense in Philly.

Carson (arlington, va)

more suprising team...redskins or bears?

Mosley
  (12:53 PM)

Bears.

Dave (D.C.)

I know Orakpo's stats aren't that impressive so far, but he's definitely presurring on the pass rush. Thoughts on his play so far?

Mosley
  (12:54 PM)

He doesn't have a bigger supporter in the league than the author of this chat. Just an absolute beast on the bullrush and he has some nice moves that he's added.

JG (Arlington)

Matt was is everybody so Mad I gave up,on the run? Felix had no room to run? Should I have but MB3 back in since he had some nice runs in the 1st quarter?

Mosley
  (12:55 PM)

At some point you have to see if Big Leonard Davis and Andre Gurode can impose their will on a defense. Garrett doesn't stick with it long enough. But the Bears were certainly getting good penetration from Briggs and Co.

Cosmo (Anytown, USA)

What is your opinion of the following quote heard on the ESPN pre-game show on Sunday: "Vick is the hardest player in the history of the NFL to prepare for defensively"? A bit overstated, maybe?

Mosley
  (12:56 PM)

I was thinking Cody Carlson first and then Vick.

Roberto (Big D)

With Jenkins possibly out this week do the Boys have any chance to stop The Texans O?

Mosley
  (12:57 PM)

If Ware and Spencer start going to town on those tackles, you never know. Remember that Saints game last winter.

FuFu (E. Stroudsburg, Pa)

Who stands to lose more in next weeks Redskins/Eagles game? Andy Reid, or Donovan McNabb?

Mosley
  (12:57 PM)

Reid bar a longshot.

Jay (mesa az)

Do you think the NFL reffing will ever get better ? I watch alot of games & theres at least 2-3 bad calls a game.

Mosley
  (12:59 PM)

There's more transparency than ever -- and that's a good thing. And now Mike Perreira can openly second guess his guys in front of a national television audience. That's a good thing. I'm hoping Hochuli will retire soon and become a full-time consultant to the Beast. Folks, you've been wonderful. Go about your day in peace.
