What's up everybody? Time to get ready for Week 4.
How much longer will I have a job with Texas if Will's defense has to carry me through this entire season?
Is this the same Greg Davis whose offense scored 40 points a game last year? It is? Oh, OK.
after this weekends game would u say that the longhorns have the best secondary in the nation and will the offense come around b4 our big games come around
It's still pretty close between Texas and Nebraska. You could make a pretty solid case for both. The front four had as much to do with the pass defense as the secondary did, but they both have strong cases as the nation's best.
I'd probably lean Texas on talent alone, but they both go a long way because of schemes, too.
Do you see Colorado pulling of a win against Georgia? What needs to happen for CU to win?
We'll see. I don't like their chances against an angry Georgia.
Are there any new impact players in the Big XII? Ones we didn't know about at season's beginning?
The short list is Nebraska's Taylor Martinez, Texas' Jackson Jeffcoat, Kansas' Daymond Patterson, Oklahoma's Tony Jefferson and Missouri's T.J. Moe.
We probably "knew" about all of them, but all three have far exceeded the impact I thought they'd have in 2010.
All five, sorry.
If Gill struggles like this next year, do you see Year 3 of his tenure being his make or break year?
Yeah, but like I've said, it's going to depend on recruiting. I still think all 11 teams in the Big 12 have more talent than Kansas.
T-Magic or T-Mobile?
T-Mobile is terrible. T-Magic by a mile.
How soon will we here if CU is staying or going in 2011 and will this affect the $20 million that aTm is crying for?
Sounds like very soon. Simple math says an earlier move by the Buffs means a bigger bank account for the Big 12 in the short run.
Dave - you had previously said you thought Cinnci had a 40% chance to knock off Oklahoma...care to change your number after what you've seen after the first three weeks?
Ha, yes. How's 15 percent sound? I watched all of that Cincy-NC State game last week and they really looked awful.
What is more mind-boggling: Johnson's 4 strait INT's, A&M nearly losing to FIU or how awful David Hasselhoff was on DWTS last night?
DWTS? No, thanks. Same for Hasselhoff. I'll go with Jerrod self-destructing in the third quarter for whatever reason.
David, do you think that Daniel Thomas is the best running back in the country?
Definitely has a good case, but it's early. We'll wait until conference play. Guys with his size who can run like he can are pretty rare. There's a reason he was No. 2 on my list of the Big 12's top 25 players.
David, is it safe to say that Taylor Martinez is the real deal, or are you still waiting to see him against Big XII defenses?
I'm buying on Martinez. He may not be AS effective against Big 12 defenses, but Texas is the only team that has a shot to completely bottle him up, and I don't know if I'd bet on that.
After TCU, finish the sentence. For a bowl berth, Baylor is a _____
about at the same spot where we thought they'd be in the win-loss column. I still like their chances.
Hey David! I heard Robert Griffin III is graduating this December and isn't planning on heading straight for law school. If he doesn't enter this upcoming draft, what happens to his eligibility if he doesn't immiediatly enroll in law school?
It'll be fine. Most guys do grad school or get a second degree. He expressed to me when I spent a day with him during the preseason that Baylor fans can count on having him in Waco for a long time.
How'd you like that TD pass D-Magic? :)
Definitely a good one. My only nitpick with my first good look at T-Magic was it seems like he's just rifling every single through without much touch. On those throws over the middle like the TD to McNeill, it's probably called for, but it seems like he could develop some more touch and obviously the vertical game will get better as his career progresses. But again, nitpicking. He's a great QB as is.
Is freshman Henry Josey now the go to guy at RB for Mizzou?
It looks like a platoon situation out there. All those running backs are pretty similar.
After the Ohio vs Ohio St mascot fight over the weekend, which 2 Big 12 mascots would you most like to see go at it in a game?
First off, that fight was the highlight of my Monday. I hadn't seen it until then. Give me the two creepiest mascots in the league, Willie the Wildcat and his human body and Pistol Pete's spray-paint 5 o'clock shadow.
Plastic heads and mascots do not mix.
I like Taylor Swift!
Congrats. So does the NFL, apparently.
Chances Mike Davis and Grapes form the same type of chemistry as shipley and mccoy? Maybe they should move in together so we can hear about that story all season long
Seems like a possibility. They looked at Davis a lot against Tech, who has a great secondary, albeit young. They should both be pretty good players, although I doubt we'll see them as roommates any time soon.
D-Magic: Best individual performance of the year so far?
Kendall Hunter in Week 1 against Washington State or Landry Jones against Florida State.
David, my girlfriend has a close friend getting married Oct. 16th. Same day as Texas-Nebraska. I've had this "save the date" circled since the 2009 Big XII title game. Any advice? Surely I won't be the only one at the wedding with this problem.
Sounds like your girlfriend needs new friends.
Whaley!!! What's going on with him? If Texas needs extra running backs why aren't they utilizing his strength?
Great, great question. I've wondered this myself. Sounds like he's kept quiet at H-back though.
I remember that list and you had Jerrod Johnson at number one and he isnt getting that much attention early in the year. What happened, is he just not playing very well or?
Played pretty bad last week, but A&M hasn't a) played on TV yet and b) hasn't played anyone yet. You'll see him next Thursday on ESPN against Oklahoma State. That should be a great game.
You're opinion on the most asked question in Lubbock last weekend. If Mike Leach was on the Tech sidelines Saturday, do the Raiders get the W?
Mike Leach? No. Michael Crabtree? Maybe.
2 questions. 1. Why do you post the time of the chat in Eastern Time when the whole conference other than Colorado is in Central time? 2. I'm seeing a lot of similarities between Texas this year and Nebraska last year. Great defense which should get better each week and just enough offense to get by most weeks. Tough to win a title that way though. Texas probably has a better offense than NU did last year, though. Is that an accurate comparison?
As for posting things in ET, that's just ESPN style, not my call. It confuses me as much as it does you, I'm sure, but that's how we operate. As for comparisons between Texas this year and Nebraska last year, I've had the same thought myself, but yeah, you're right. Texas' offense is far ahead of where Nebraska's was this time last year. They have some potential, especially at quarterback, and a lot of playmakers at receiver.
Hearing a lot of NU fans saying they are going to beat K-State by 3 or 4 TD's........do you buy that?
What show premiere are you most excited about this week?
How I Met Your Mother was pretty good last night, but probably 30 Rock or Glee. Boardwalk Empire was really good on Sunday, too.
David, I hate to burst the bubble of the T-Magic fans out there, but just about any other Big 12 team would be 3-0 playing the same schedule Nebraska has so far. Washington is terrible. That looked like a high school defense out there.
Sure. Nebraska played some bad defenses last year, too. Their offense never looked like this.
Do you think Aldon Smith will miss more than 1-2 weeks? If so, do you think it is time to stick a fork in Mizzou's Big 12 North dreams?
Nah, it sounds like he'll be OK. My guess is they rest him completely, and then use him in a limited capacity against Colorado and put him back into full duty against A&M.
How big is the gap between Nebraska, Missouri and KSU at the top of the north division?
Nebraska and Missouri seem like they're in completely different leagues. I thought Missouri was reasonably close, but Nebraska's looked a lot better than I thought they'd be, and Missouri hasn't been as good. K-State has been about what I thought they were. They're pretty close to Missouri right now.
Pistol Pete packs a shotgun...I'm just sayin
Best team in the state of Texas? TCU, Texas, Cowboys, or Texans???
No love for Euless Trinity?
David, curious as to your thoughts of how Gameday could go to Boise instead of your old stomping grounds where #1 and #10 both SEC teams and undefeated will be playing. I think its clear that Arkansas vs. Alabama has more of a national impact. Your thoughts?
Boise is playing the second marquee game on a schedule and story that's breaking completely new ground in college football since the birth of the BCS. Arkansas is playing an SEC game between two Top 10 teams. That happens like 15 times a year in the SEC, just not at Arkansas.
You bash DWTS and you're excited about Glee? What gives D-Magic, you know you would accept a DWTS invite in a second?
No way. DWTS is the same thing every week. Glee is consistently hilarious and has a pretty compelling storyline.
David, how do you think TCU would do if they joined the Big 12? Seems to me like TCU would be a good fit for the Big 12.
That comes up literally about every week, but let it go, folks. It's not happening. TCU is a great team, but their football budget isn't on par with the rest of the Big 12, and they bring in no new markets. When it comes to conference membership, money trumps competition every time.
How did Scott Smith not receive Big 12 defensive player of the week? I saw that you had named him your player of the week so I'm wondering why the conference would feel differently...
Probably because Texas Tech didn't win, honestly. Curtis Brown's play had a huge impact on the game, but I thought Smith had a better overall game.
So do I get any Heisman love yet or not? This thumb hurts like a *$*#$%, but I'm still lighting up the score board...
Seems like you've been branded, for better or worse, Weeden. The same reason Graham Harrell didn't win with 5,000 yards passing.
Is A&M's defensive improvement a mirage or for real?
No idea yet. They haven't played anyone. They will on Sept. 30. We'll know a lot about the defense after that one.
So Dave, with that logic (regarding TCU), what schools would make sense for the Big 12?
The ones that came up the most often were BYU and Air Force, which wouldn't work for all kinds of reasons. Are you guys starting to see why the Big 12 isn't in a rush to become a 12-team league again? No school makes sense. Or cents, for that matter.
Louisville!!!!! i've been saying that for 3 months now.
Maybe, but still geography issues there. More for Louisville than the Big 12.
Can you please, please explain your logic in ranking Nebraska third behind OU and Texas? I just want to know what justifies them to still top the Huskers after they looked so good on the road.
It's basically down to this: Winning @ Texas Tech and beating FSU the way Oklahoma did at home are better than anything Nebraska has done. But there's almost no distinction between the three teams. Consider them my co-No. 1. Seriously. Nebraska deserves credit for bringing it all three weeks, which Oklahoma hasn't done, and Texas to a lesser extent, but don't worry about it right now. You can see how close they are in the polls.
Help me out, David. What is wrong with Tech's offense? Playcalling? Buzzsaw UT Defense? Quarterback? What is your take? With Leach's offense and Tubby's D, it seems would have won Sat night.
UT Defense. Tech's offense may not be quite as good this year, but the defense is way, way better. The Red Raiders will look a lot better when they're not lined up across like seven NFL players.
Good thing the Big 12 has baylor...I would hate for them to lose the Waco market
Ha. Blame Ann Richards for that one.
Should just bring back Arkansas and lure LSU over.
Good luck with that. I hear teams are dying to leave the SEC. Worst league ever.
Do I bust a big play against Texas, or do the Longhorns bottle me up?
Texas has the speed to keep you from going for 70 yards, but I bet the secondary has to drag you down more than a few times downfield.
So wait, Dave. You mean OU's struggles against Utah State and Air Force outweigh Nebraska winning big on the road?
No, but dismantling a top 25 Florida State team does.
Is the Big 12 changing their conference name after Colorado and Nebraska leaves? How about the Burnt Orange Conference?
No. Use some Common Sense, Thomas.
David....you mentioned earlier that TCU football budget isn't on par with the B12-2. Well, TCU has done pretty good for itself without BCS money. If TCU goes to a BCS conference, then would it not then be on "par" budget wise? It's a Catch 22 statement you just made.
You're right about that. The same argument could be made about Boise in something like the Pac-10, location notwithstanding. But conferences aren't real willing to take a risk like that. There's no point. And the Big 12 can operate as a 10-team league as long as Texas is happy and A&M gets paid like they want to be so badly.
How much of a thorn am I gonna be in Taylor Martinez's side?
Now THAT is a matchup I want to see, too. Smith will be spying Martinez just like he did Scheelhaase. Right now, I like Martinez in that matchup, but it should be very, very interesting.
Does UCLA have any chance against Texas?
One more question, then I'm out. Let's hear some good ones.
Which of the big 3 big 12 teams loses first? Can Mizzou move up into the front 3?
We'll find out at Red River.
Thanks for the questions, all. See you again next week. Good chat this week.
