Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session. Week 3 is nearly over, with one more game on tap, and for those who wish to discuss fantasy baseball, there is one week to go. I'm guessing we'll be heavy on football today! Thanks in advance for showing up, and let's get going with as many questions as possible...

Peyton Hillis (Cleveland)

Am I being overrated on the waiverwire or am I the real deal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

The topic of today's first blog, I don't think Hillis is being overrated. He remains available in 30 percent of leagues, and it's pretty clear he's going to keep getting touches. As for Jerome Harrison, it appears even when healthy he's not the main guy.

Mark (Kansas)

Is SJax going to be OK????

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Steven Jackson will need an MRI on his groin and who knows, he could miss a week or more, but early reports have been positive. The fact the Rams are reportedly interested in Larry Johnson helps nobody. I wouldn't panic yet, basically, but I am thisclose to wondering if Jackson is brittle.

Mike (Madison, WI)

EK, let's get this party started! What has suprised you more so far: McFadden's production or Ray Rice's lack thereof?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

McFadden has been surprising. I think Rice will be fine, assuming he's healthy. McFadden has really run with the job... don't ever let them say you can't lose an NFL job due to injury. Happens all the time, and not only to Kevin Kolb...

Andy (Syracuse, NY)

If Rice sits on Sunday against the Steelers would you recomment McGhee against the steelers on the road?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Nope. But I could see one of those 15-carry, 40-yard, 1-touchdown games for Willis. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

MJD (Jacksonville)

Am I benchable yet? Am I a product of a terrible offense or are my injuries more than the team's letting on?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Anyone is benchable, I suppose, but 98 yards in Week 1 and 88 more Sunday... he hasn't been that bad. Things should improve and he could still have a fantastic season.

Curtis Browne (New Jersey)

How does Jennings do tonight? He and Forte need to get me 30 points

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Should be a high scoring game... certainly possible they get you 30. Dare to dream!

Chase (Pittsfield, MA)

Are you in contention in any of your baseball leagues with a exciting finishes set up for the final week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I am... set lineups in multiple weekly leagues today, including the office 20-team auction....and will be facing Brian Kenny in the ESPNEWS Hot List finale yet again... in h2h baseball it doesn't really matter who you've got, but who plays...

Andrew (Iowa City)

Do you think that Thomas will loose some Gline carries to Ivory?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Well, I do think the Saints want to avoid using Pierre Thomas all the time, and keeping him from the goal line is a smart way to help him stay healthy. Might be Ivory, he looked OK Sunday.

Ryan (Milwaukee)

Any info on Best's injury?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Toe problem, doesn't appear serious, but then again my toes feel fine right now. The Lions seem upbeat Best will play next week.

Joe (Buffalo)

You have to love the irony of the Saints icing the kicker, and then he makes it on his second try. Sweet Justice!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Isn't that rule just ridiculous? Either call the timeout or don't... but waiting for the snap, it can backfire. As for the Saints' Garrett Hartley, he might not get another chance.

Frank (Bay Area)

Just traded B. Jackson for Vick. Good trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

If you need a QB, then yes. Vick looks like the real deal. Nothing wrong with Jackson though, and remember, most fantasy teams can use 3 active RBs at once, and only 1 QB. So it's apples to oranges here.

Diego (Chicago)

Jamaal Charles becoming a better start than DeAngelo Williams?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I don't think so... Williams did fine, just didn't get enough touches. Charles and Thomas Jones are clearly sharing...more so than DeAngelo and J.Stewart, where DeAngelo gets a lot more.

Mike (Raleigh)

Can I drop Celek for Hernandez or Moeaki?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Well, I wouldn't, but it is your team. Celek played fine on Sunday. Seems like a panic move...

Ed (Los Angeles)

EK, you've been my favorite all these years. Thanks for your expert advice. Do you think J. Campbell gets another shot at some point?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Yes, I think we'll see Campbell again, but if he doesn't play better, it won't matter. Gradkowski played well Sunday, and the Raiders should have won the game. I can't kick, but it seems like a 32-yarder in the final minute... you gotta make it!

Waldo (Parts Unknown)

Who is Roy E Williams? Why did he do that to Dez and Miles?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Seems an aberration. Austin and Bryant are still terrific. This happens to fantasy owners from time to time, where a guy with a big name who isn't all that productive - T.O. comes to mind - becomes popular, then cut a few weeks later.

dave (home)

i have orton, kolb and matt ryan is it time to cut ties with kolb and look for depth at WR i have A johnson, colston and also have gates and shiancoe

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Absolutely. I don't expect Kolb to have much of a role this season. Vick looks good. And really, so does Orton. I'd use him over Ryan.

James (Texas)

Need to drop Favre, who plays week 4 while I wait for Roethlisberger?Alex Smith? Grarrard? maybe Gradkowski against a weak Houston pass D?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

NEED to drop Favre? I wouldn't say that. He is on bye, though, but didn't you know that when you picked Big Ben? Gradkowski should get double digits this week. Can't trust Garrard at all, or Smith apparently. Surprising 49ers.

Brandon (Atlanta)

Is Michael Bush dropable in a 10-team league? The Law Firm and D Keller are both available.

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

The law firm! I love it! That's BenJarvus Green-Ellis, for those who don't/can't read my other work. Oh well. I don't think BGE is a great player, and I got ripped in blogs last week for saying he was next in line, but it did come true. He had a big game with Fred Taylor shockingly hurt. I know, Fred got hurt, what a surprise! Anyway, if you need a TE, Keller is legit, but I think McFadden is too, so BGE over Bush...

Chris (Cincy)

Lance Moore a good WR3? Seems to thrive when Bush is out.

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Potential WR3... and yes, it does appear he steps up when Reggie, as he so often is, can't play.

Luis (Burbank, CA)

So Roy Williams is not worth a waiver wire pickup?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Well, in some leagues maybe, but it would have to be deep. Cowboys aren't even playing this week (cue up my rant on how lame early season bye weeks are... it's Week 4!!!)

Kennan (IL)

Johnny Knox? Is he the bears WR you want?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

If I was ranking the Bears WRs for the season, yes. But that doesn't mean he's a top 30 WR... lot of depth there and Cutler is certainly using it all.

Bud (Colorado)

Whats your take on Blount with TB. Will he eat into Caddys carries. I could see him as a 1 annd 2 down back with K Huggins as the change of pace. Thoughts

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Weird situation in Tampa Bay, as it really does appear that Blount has leapfrogged poor Huggins as the handcuff guy, and could become relevant next week. Didn't expect that.

Eric (PHX)

Is Keller more legit than Finley for the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

No, I wouldn't say quite that, but top 10 for Keller, sure. Remember, the Jets will get Santonio Holmes back, and will run the ball plenty.

Joe (New York, NY)

Worried about Chad Ochostinko? Is it just because Carson Palmer is terrible?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

I wouldn't call him terrible, they won the game easily. If a defense stops certain things, you improvise, alter the game plan. Palmer doesn't care about stats, nor should he. He's a worthy backup in fantasy, and Chad is a borderline WR2/WR3

Eric (CO)

Do you think trading Cooley and Jonathan Stewart to Deangelo's owner for McFadden is fair value?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Works for me, but one can never know what an owner might do. And it's a terrible time to try and trade Stewart.

smitty (Kansas)

Will Ryan Matthews ever live up to the hype this year? What sort of numbers should we expect from here on?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

I think he will be fine, but apparently everyone loves Tolbert. I think the Chargers will use Mathews when healthy.

dan (bflo)

Will Schaub become more consistent soon? These single digit games are killing me

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Odd start for the Houston offense... one game they only run, the next they only pass, and Dallas kinda embarrassed them. I'd bet Schaub throws for 300 this coming week.

Adam (Miami)

Henne looked pretty good last night how do you think he will do next Monday against the pats

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I think I undersold Henne some this preseason. With Marshall it makes Henne look much better, and they just aren't running like they used to.

Joel (CT)

would you rather have Welker or Hines Ward for the rest of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Welker, but Ward is a safe WR2. To me Welker is a borderline WR1.

Shonn Greene Owners (Everywhere)

What are we supposed to do? Seriously?!

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Wait. Can't really drop someone with that potential, but LT is getting more touches, and he's looked good. I have a feeling at some point Greene explodes with 100-yard games consistently...but it might be awhile.

Doug (MA)

No Austin Collie questions yet? Here's one... Who is the better sell high, Austin Collie or Jeremy Maclin? Also, what level RB to expect in return? (Other WRs are R Moss, R Wayne, Knox, M Clayton, Nate Washington, and Jacoby Jones). Thanks so much!

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I'm not really selling high on Collie or Maclin. Look at their QBs, their offenses, their schedules.. both look legit. Collie could be Welker for PPR owners. And I have no idea what someone would offer in return, but if you move Collie, it should be a lot.

Bobby (LA)

What do you make of P. Garcon? Is he droppable in a 10 team league or he he still a WR3?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Can't drop a potential starter in a Peyton Manning offense... not yet. Let's see when he gets healthy.

MC (NYC)

Gates and Floyd seem to be putting up big numbers week to week. Good or bad idea to start a WR and TE from the same team? Or do you not see Floyd putting up these numbers every week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

I don't generally have a problem with a WR-TE combo, and in this case they're both doing well.

dave (home)

i put in a claim for brandon lloyd and dropped berrian good move?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Well, can't say I'm a huge Lloyd fan, but I have given up on Berrian. I don't see him emerging. What a waste of a draft pick. With Denver, the issue is so many WRs... everyone loved the rookie Demaryius and look what happened.. it wasn't him.

Erdman (Revis Island)

should i be worried about mjd? hes killing me

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

I wouldn't say 10 points in Week 1 and 8 Sunday kills you. I'd say negative points does. No, he hasn't been great... don't overreact.

Joel (CT)

I traded Foster and Boldin for best and welker last week. Any chance I won't regret this for the entire season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Seems legit to me. I'd prefer Foster to Best, and would have last week, but I'd still go Welker over Boldin. It's one game. Look what Boldin did the first two weeks.

Mike (Madison)

Nicks has been really up and down. Can I count on him as a WR2, or am I going to be frustrated all year with him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Seemed the quintessential sell high guy after the 3-TD game, but I'm guessing few owners actually sold high. Hey, me and Berry and Harris and Tristan... we all wrote that about Nicks, but it's easier for people to get overly excited and be haters! Nicks is good. Might be a top 20 WR in the end. But he's been erratic and he was solely responsible for the first Eli interception.

K Williams (DC)

Is that Torain guy trouble for me?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

That's Mike Shanahan, up to his ol' tricks. I blogged about Keiland Williams last week, and didn't want to say he was a safe handcuff. And then on Sunday, no carries. Not safe indeed.

James (Orange County)

EK, just got offered Steven Jackson & Desean Jackson for Ray Rice

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

Oooh, I do like that, unless he has inside information that SJax is really hurt bad. Rice could be, too.

Beanie (ARZ)

So, I made Tim Hightower look bad yesterday, right? I'll get the bulk of the carries now...right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

I think so. Should be the original arrangement with Beanie getting 15-20 carries now that he is healthy.

Brad (MA)

As a Vick owner, whos been riding him on the bench, should i be bold and trade Brady for C.Benson and Megatron?? (Would be replacing Fred Taylor and Mike williams TB)

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Well, I would still rather trade Vick. This is risky. I trust Brady more.

Matt (Alabama)

Does BenJarvis Green Ellis have any value in 12-team leagues?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

I think he proved Sunday he does. That's a significant number of carries, and he did well with them, though against a bad team. So what, the Pats face that bad team again, and others!

Dave (Quincy IL)

EK lookin at 2 potential deals to change my team drastically. Schaub for MJD and then Charles or Bradshaw for Vick. What say you sir?? It is a PPR league

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

I understand both deals, but I just want to caution people on Vick... he did this against two brutal teams, the Lions and Jags. They might combine for like 5 wins. I don't think he lights up the Redskins and Cowboys and Giants... but getting MJD cheap, good. I'd keep Bradshaw though.

Joel (CT)

Would you ever trade a wr2 for a Defense? I have Austin, Welker, Hines Ward and the Chargers D in a 2wr league. Would you ever trade either Welker or Ward for Pittsburgh or is that crazy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

I honestly don't think I would ever trade for a defense, certainly not something valuable. But the Steelers look like last seaosn's Jets. of course last season's Jets weren't the top fantasy defense... isn't there anything on free agency?

Zach (Roswell)

With Forsett getting all the carries is he trade bait now?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Can't imagine you can get much for Forsett at this point, with 18 points in three games. I'd wait.

Steven Jackson (STL)

My groin is sprained, I tweeted that earlier today. I'd rather hear if Jason Witten is droppable at this point? Carlson and Moeaki are available.

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

I would keep Witten over them, but I'm guessing you want to do otherwise. Go for it! But Witten is still really good... he was last season, but the TDs weren't there, and that can fluctuate.

Dave (New York)

Per your advice 2 weeks ago, I sold high on Run-DMC to buy low on Shonn Greene. Is there any chance that I'll look less like an idiot by the end of the season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Yes, there is every chance. Most people would buy low on Greene. But I am starting to think McFadden is legit.

Lesean (lubbock)

what do you expect from me going forward?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

I sold high after Week 2 on LeSean McCoy, but I could still see a reasonable season... but Vick does not make things easier for McCoy, only the WRs.

Rich (Cleveland)

With S Jax having groin issues, would you pick up Darby or just wait it out?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

I don't see Darby as particularly appealing should Jackson miss time, but for now he'd be the Week 4 starter. There's nothing else available? Darby did fine Sunday, but the Rams did have a nice lead.

Chris (Fayetteville)

Do you purposely choose te easy ???s?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

It's fantasy football...what exactly constitutes a difficult question?

jacob (kansas)

What is the problem with Carolina's backfield?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I'd say they aren't getting enough touches, in part because the team's QBs keep giving the ball away. I'd buy low on DeAngelo Williams.

Greg (Pittsburgh)

Which "lesser" WR from yesterday is for real? Jabar Gaffney, Lance Moore, Roy E Williams

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

The first two... I doubt Roy keeps doing this.

Chris (NY)

Jacksonville's lack of explosive offense does not concern you on MJD for having a top 5 back year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Yes, I do think it is going to be tough for MJD to be a top-5 back. But what would you get for him.. that's the thing. He's capable of a TD every week. You can't give that away.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Rest of season: McCoy or Wells?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

McCoy, but not by much. I'm guessing the value on Wells is so low right now it's a great time - maybe the last time - to steal him.

steve (MA)

I'm down 23 points with Cutler, Forte, and Driver to go...will I win this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

Yes you will!

Chip (NY)

EK, tough call...Would you trade Romo and Jamaal Charles for Rodgers if it meant relying on Jones-Drew, Ronnie Brown, LT, Law Firm and Donald Brown? We start 3 rbs...thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

I happen to rank Romo well each week, as a top 5 QB, so it's a bit risky. How much better will Rodgers be, 50 points over 16 weeks? Not sure I would make the deal.

Chris (Fayetteville)

Should I make this trade if I own Turner: I give Hillis, Willis, and Manningham for Fitzgerald and Snelling. Thanks EK!

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Just to get Fitzgerald it seems worth it to me.

Elrod (Texas)

Rank these the rest of the year: Big Ben, Vick, Eli, Rivers

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Rivers, Vick, Ben, Eli.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Is Snelling worth a bench spot?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Sure, but Turner looked mighty healthy to me Sunday. People overreacted on Snelling last week, and he did fine Sunday, but when would you actually start him?

Jason (Bmore)

Any gut feel on Mendenhall in this weeks game against the ravens? Hillis did rack up a bunch of yardage against and alleged great run d.

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Mendenhall will be among my top 15 RBs this and probably every week... close to top 10. And I wouldn't overrate the Ravens. They've been run on.

Andrew (Atlanta)

Floyd for Wells? I am desperate for a rb.

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Well, this deal would help your desperation then. Wells should be a good RB2 from here on out.

bamamarg (IL)

Would you trade Vick for Schaub

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

I would, because I saw Vick play all those years in Atlanta and know that a good defense can handle him. But he's still top 10. Schaub is top 5 though.

Joel (CT)

would you trade Welker for Wells?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

No. Welker is just too good.

Mike (OH)

Need WRs badly...Crabtree and Hillis for NY Steve Smith and Hillis?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Wouldn't that just be Crabtree for Smith then? Take Smith!

Jason (Arkansas)

Would you trade Hillis for Matt Ryan if you still had CJ2K, Forte, and Best?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

If I needed a QB, yes. But you left that info out!

J. Best (Detroit)

My toe hurts, its hurt all season. Should fantasy owners continue to start me?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Depends what else you have. I'll rank him near the top 20 probably this week.

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, thank you for the questions and have a terrific day. If you need points tonight in MNF, good luck! I will be back chatting on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET, so see you all there! Thanks!
