Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat. A bit of a slow weekened but still plenty to discuss with lots of fights on tap. New notebook is up, schedule is updated and there are new blogs as well, not to mention plenty of news stories. So let's get to it.

Bakari (Jersey City, NJ)

Seems both Road Warrior and Allan Green have trouble at 168. How do you feel about the matchup?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I think that Johnson was the best available guy Showtime could have gotten for the tournament. It will be a challenge for Johnson I think to make the weight but same for Green. We'll see who does it best. I think a Glen Johnson on his game beats Allan Green.

JP (Columbus, OH)

So Dan - is Kirkland still in prison?! (Just kidding, of course I read the front page)

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Exactly. I think we can forget about that question now.

Garth (Stamford, CT)

Happy Friday Dan, I am here at the hospital enjoying the chat while I wait for my future freak son to be delivered. I watched, the Mosley/Mora replay and honestly I didn't think the fight was as bad as you made it out to be but Mosley clearly won that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I agree Mosley clearly won the fight. But the fight stunk out loud. When your new baby is crying in the middle of the night, put on the fight and he will go right to sleep. Congrats.

nick (ny)

dan, seeing that glen johnson rehydrated up to 193 for the cloud fight, dont you feel that 168 might be a bit too hard to make for the road warrior?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Glen is a pro. He'll do it and do it right I belive.

Enzo Macranelli (Just waking up)

Where am I, did I win?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

That was a sick, sick, sick knockout. I had seen the fight on youtube but got DVDs of the show the other day and was literally watching the fight again last night. Enzo was winning and that one shot just crushed him. I thought the ref should have stopped it after the first knockdown. The second knockdown was scary stuff.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Awesome job this week with all of your blogs, articles, and quick-hits! Especially liked and agreed with your article on "Sour Grapes" Malignaggi's stupid claims. I hope Paulie wakes up from his dream and gets real.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Thanks. Paulie was not too pleased with the column yesterday and called me to tell me -- loudly for 40 minutes. I respectfully disagreed with him and told him so. We loudly "discussed" it and we're cool. But I just don't agree with him and he doesn't agree with what I wrote. That's life.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Is it true that Angulo's team DROVE from California to Florida for the Cintron fight in order to avoid the FTA or airport security looking into Perro's immigration status?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

That is true the way I heard it.

PeteNice (Philly)

Dan, I never heard of Mike Jones possible future opponent Kell Brook. Is he legit?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Kell Brook is one of the top young fighters in England. He's looked good in recent fights and two weeks ago (on the same card as the Maccarinelli destruction) he knocked out Michael Jennings (who you might know from being knocked out by Cotto) in a title eliminator. He's a good young fighter.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Dan, Your Blog on "Magic Man" was spot on. Di Bella worked miracles getting a B Class fighter a bunch of A class fights. Do you think Paulie will ever get another big fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I suspect there's one more nice payday out there for Paulie now that he is with Golden Boy.

Ryan (Youngstown)

Hey Dan, lots of HBO and Showtime cards going head-to-head this fall. Which network do you feel put together the more competitive lineup?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Both networks have some quality matches the rest of the year but HBO has more cards and I think has the better overall schedule. But both are good. I just wish things had been spread out a little more instead of jamming everything into 6 weeks.

WBC (The Sewer)

We are proud to announce that James Kirkland is our new Diamond-Post-Prison-In-A-Halfway-House Champion.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

For a small sanctioning fee, of course.

J in FLA (Cocoa, FL)

Any news on a site for Ward / Dirrell? Isn't this how it all started before (with no site).

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Nothing and it's really ticking me off.

Daniel (SF)

Would you agree that Derek Chisora is still a bit too green for Wladimir Klitschko, and that Dimitrenko is a more legit fight at the moment?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I agree but I think Klitschko DESTROYS both of them EASILY.

Tony (Tampa)

"When your new baby is crying in the middle of the night, put on the fight and he will go right to sleep."Classic.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Was I wrong?

John (San Fran)

Does Paulie realize that golden boy probably just signed him as a "name" for their young guys at welter? Ortiz and Canelo will blast him in the next year or two

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Those are fights I have thought of.

Ryan (Youngstown)

Isn't Kell Brook Pac-Man's new mandatory?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Yes, but that fight isn't happening probably ever. So the WBO will let Brook face Jones possibly for the interim title because we all need more interim titles!!!!! (For a small sanctioning fee, of course.)

jean (montreal)

Dan, anything finalized on Berto's opponent ofr Nov 27th?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

DiBella and Shaw are working out the details for Berto fight Freddy Hernandez. Not too interested in that dreckles.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

I really hope you write a book about your experiences after you retire. Just reading in to the Pauline Phone Call alone, you probably have some great stories you can't talk about right now.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

The call with Paulie literally gave me a headache and I took a Tylenol when it was over. I am dead serious.

Vince (Poole)

Dan if Pac-Floyd get it on in May 2011 who do you favour & why??

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Seriously?

Ronak (NY)

What are your thoughts on Amir Khan v Mayweather that Schaeffer keeps talking about?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Unless it's Pacman-Mayweather I don't want to hear that crap. Khan has done nothing to warrant that fight and still won't have done anything to warrant that fight if he beats Maidana, who is entirely overrated.

carlos ((houston,tx))

Happy Friday DTM!!! I enjoyed watching antonio escalante on espn friday night fights, but after probably a knockout of year where does he go from here?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Probably back to FNF.

Ian (London)

Dan, Frank Warren gets a lot of criticism but didn't he put on a fantastic show? (Magnificent 7)

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Very good show for the European level.

Bakari (Jersey City, NJ)

Did Paulie deny his quotes, or did he have an issue with how you supported DiBella's benefit to his career?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

He doesn't deny the quotes. He believes DiBella was overpaid, took too high a percentage and got him to sign an extension he claims he was unaware of. Some stuff was so ridiculous I didn't bother to argue with him.

Sean (Pittston)

Signed, sealed, delivered Martinez-Williams, my live first fight after 20 years of being a fan...Is it a rockin venue?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Nice. Boardwalk Hall if an excellent venue. Have fun!

Cole (Payson,UT)

Short of Martinez v Williams II, I think the best card could be the bantam semi-finals. I think both of those fights will be sick.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

The bantam card is a good one, I agree.

Adam (DuPage)

Did Joshua Clottey retire in shame after the Pacquiao fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I think he retired around the second round when he refused to throw any punches.

Joe (CA)

Hope both Green and Johnson know they will need a KO for 3 pts to advance (still not a lock)...that should make the fight more interesting

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

It's a bit confusing but Glen can advance without a knockout but Green must have a knockout. Johnson inherits Kessler's total scorecard points while Green inherited Taylor's. So based on the rounds they've won in the tourney, Johnson can win a decision and advance with help while Green needs a knockout and help. I spent time yesterday going over the scorecards. And that's how I have it figured out.

Charles (DFW)

Strangely, I sort of like a potential Klitschko-Dimitrenko fight. With the exception of Tony Thompson, who gave him trouble, Wlad hasn?t really fought anyone his own size in a long time. Depending on if the loss to Eddie Chambers is more anomaly that exposure, this may be a tougher fight than Wlad thinks.

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Dimitrenko has great size and that's about it. He's got sloppy technique and Klitschko will brutalize him if they make that fight.

chuzen (st. louis)

what names are being tossed around for rios on the top rank ppv? i am stoked to see that dude fight again

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

One name under discussion is Dorin Spivey.

Gil (NYC)

Freddy have a shot against Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

If he lands, he could cause some trouble but I doubt it.

Brian (Toronto)

Saw Taylor/Pavlik I at Boardwalk Hall, the atmosphere was electric.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Yup, it was great. That's the DVD pick of the week.

Kevin (Fall River)

But I thought you clarified after the other week's chat that Johnson will not inherit Kessler's points? Has that changed?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

He doesn't inherit the points for the wins but the tiebreaker beyond head to head is rounds won on the scorecards. He inherits that total if they need to break a tie in that manner.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Any news on Erislandy Lara?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Nothing right now. I need to ask Golden Boy about him.

Rick (Marina)

With Chavez Jr seeming to spar with Manny on a regular basis do you think that will benefit Chavez Jr in the long run?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Can't hurt to spar with the best fighter on the planet.

Marc (Malden, MA)

Juan Guzman weighed 144 for his last 135 lb fight. Now he wants to try and make 140? What are the odds he weighs 150 for that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Pretty good I guess.

Horn (Vegas)

Kiss was not nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Glad you didn't jump.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

It's a disgrace.

Paulie M (Brooklyn)

Lou DiBella also clogged my toilet and kicked my dog.

Richard (Oxford (UK))

Random question Dan but is Cedric Kushner still promoting anyone??

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

A couple guys, including Tua.

Cole (Payson,UT)

Speaking of Clottey. Worse performance; Clottey v Pac or Green v Ward?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Green. At lest Clottey landed a few uppercuts.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, who is the love child's mother?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, hate to beat a dead horse but how do you give Johnson Kessler's pts. for rounds but not his pts. for the win against Froch?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

The rounds are meant as a tiebreaker only. It's all laid out in the master contract that I have a copy of.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Shame on HBO for buying that crap between Berto and Hernandez. When is Berto going to get in tough? I am sick and tired of him getting paid to fight garbage competition.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Your comment is one I am seeing all day today. And I can't disagree. If Berto and his people want to make that kind of fight, no problem. But HBO doesn't have to waste something like $1.25 millionish on it.

matt (canada)

dan i cant listen to a 5 minute interview with paulie cuz his voice is so damn annoying, i can only imagine him yelling for 40 minutes.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

And on a tinny-sounding cell phone.

Eric (Omaha) [via mobile]

Dan, Any news on the Bradley-Alexander front?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I am told that Bradley and Shaw have a deal in principle and are exchanging paperwork.

Koichi (NYC)

It's great to see Kirkland out of prison and looking to get back into the ring but I'm really bummed he won't be on the Nov. 6th card at the PruCenter. He's one of the main reasons I got tix for that fight, luckily the rest of the card is nice.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Kirkland's return I think will wind up Dec. 11 in Las Vegas on the Khan-Maidana undercard.

Roy (Reno)

$1.25 Mill for a showcase fight with a guy most fans have never seen? Great job HBO

Kevin (Hartford CT)

wait wait wait...please tell me Berto is not making 1.25 million to fight Hernandez....

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

That's the approximate price HBO is paying for the fight, meaning both sides.

Tony (Tampa)

Dan,Do you understand why HBO overpaid Berto..? He was never a big draw. Posseses good skills but nothing that blows you away. Nice guy but not super charismatic. I can understand Khan getting big paychecks because he does have a big following and decent charisma but not Berto.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Two words: Al Haymon.

Greg (Los Angeles)

Any idea why the fight with Aydin couldn't be made? I would have been pretty interested in that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Supposedly Aydin turned down the offer at the end of the day.

Guano man (Puerto Rico)

Dan considering there is a nice card on the east coast on november 6 with judah fighting mathysse will you be attending that one or are you traveling to the lopez vs marquez on that day

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

I haven't decided but I am leaning to going to Newark mainly to offset the large amount of travel, especially with the Dallas fight the next week. So instead of going to Vegas like Thursday and coming home Sunday night and then turning around and going to Dallas on Wednesday, I'll probably go to Newark the day of the fight and come home Sunday and then go to Dallas. Save myself a cross country trip in exchange for another good card I can get to on a two-hour train ride.

Cole (Payson,UT)

How far out do you decide which fights you'll be attending? Do you already know which fights you'll be at in November and December?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I have a good idea of the schedule I hope to follow for those fights.

Matt (Charlotte)

Can we offically say bye bye to Joey Gilbert now ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I never said hello.

jrfromdallas (southfork)

Is it true that the government is showing the entire Mora/Mosley fight in Gitmo to break the will of the prisoners?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

I think Wlad should change it up and fight Dimitrenko and Chisora on the same night.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I like that. Maybe with one arm tied behind his back?

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, I've been reading that Devon Alexander may scrap the Bradley fight to instead fight his mandatory?! This isn't true, is it? Unless I read a tweet from you on it, I can't trust the info.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Alexander is NOT fighting the mandatory. Simply not true.

Juan Garcia (sunny so cal)

Dan, any idea if HBO is planing any Boxing PPV events for December or is the Pacquiao vs Maragarito the final HBO PPV event for 2010. If it is the final event for the year, do you know what we might exoect in early 2011? Thanks, Dan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Pacquiao-Cheato is the last HBO PPV of the year.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

HBO doesn't want to show the Klitschkos, but instead are showing, ahem, "exciting" fights like Mosley-Mora and spending loads of cash on Berto-Hernandez? Nice going, Ross!

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Just to clarify: HBO didn't spend it's budget on Mosley-Mora. It was a PPV for which Golden Boy was on the hook. HBO did spend on the production but made a deal that was financially worth its while. And not that I am excusing the Berto trash, but it is on an undercard. Just clarifying.

chris (oklahoma city)

Dan, did you ever see the documentary about Malignaggi called Magic Man? It seemed like Dibella came out of pocket to put that movie out but I could be wrong? Either way, Paulie has nothing to be mad at as far as I'm concerned.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I have seen it. And that was another thing Paulie complained about -- that Lou supposedly made all this money on that docu and he didn't get any. I very highly doubt the docu was profitable, by the way.

William McAurthur (Third Calvary) (England)

Thou hath a sword to bear upon me Rafael!!! I will slay thee! Cometh! Cometh here!

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

These are my readers. Should I even know what the hell that means?

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Since HBO is clueless let me help them. 1) The freaks don't need to see Berto again until you take the pacifier out of his mouth. 2) Stop giving Robert Guererro chances to be worth watching, we've wasted enough time on this guy. 3) Showtime isn't a real threat to your dominance in the boxing market, you can play hard ball occasionally and dictate that better fights happen. At the end of the day all fighters will come back when the $ is right. Did I miss anything?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

That's a helluva start. The Freaks are a little upset about things today.

Luis (El Paso ,Tx.)

Dan can we finally now see Kirkland/Angulo?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

I hope that happens eventually, but it's a ways off.

Jeff (Las Vegas)

Dan, Do you really think Camacho Jr. will fight Lemieux?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

I'll believe it when he shows up in Canada.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

In a 40 minute phone call with an upset Paulie, I would be surprised if you got more that 30 words in during the conversation

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

About that.

Rusty (Philly)

Dan, do you think that boxing will ever be on network TV again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Yes.

Steve (NYC)

Shouldn't there be a rule that if you can't draw 1K fans (Dawson, Berto) to a fight you can't get on HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

You said it, not me.

Adam (DuPage)

What's the likelihood of revisiting Mosely-Berto early next year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

I think it's possible.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, any word on Dmitry Pirog at all?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

There have been talks between his side and Felix Sturm's but it looks unlikely. More likely Pirog will come back in the first quarter of 2011.

Geovany (San Diego)

JC Jr fighting a natural welterweight at a contractual 157.... I'm a little disappointed... I gave Gomez a chance at 154, but 157?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Yeah, the weight was disappointing. Gomez is barely effective at 147. At 157, I don't give him much of a shot.

Nick (Kansas)

Dan, I remember you saying that you didn't have time to watch the Magnificent Seven card. Jennings wasn't knocked out, he was stopped on a cut in a very slow fight, which reaked of Warren BS. Just a sidenote.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

I know. I said knocked out generically for a stoppage. I watched the fight yesterday. I didn't have a big problem with the ending of the fight.

jrfromdallas (southfork)

Who do you think trashed DiBella worse Hopkins or Paulie?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Hopkins. He maliciously spread lies about Lou and lost a judgment for something like $650,000 plus lawyer fees in a libel lawsuit. That's serious stuff.

dantheboxingfan (flanders NJ)

Paulie makes 1 million against Hatton and he is complaining? Give me a break!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Yes, complaining that his promoter took his rightful 30 percent of the $1.5 million package.

David (Houston)

What do you think of Vera as the choice for Pavlik? Small guy huh?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

It's reasonable for who was available and the fact that Pavlik is coming of a tough loss.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Fresh from the Bat Email: Tix for Khan-Maidana go on sale on Saturday at 1 pm ET/10 am PT. Prices are $350, $250, $150, $100 and $50. Tix available at mandalaybay.com or ticketmaster.com or at the Mandalay Box office at noon PT.

Shane (Portland, OR)

Dan as of right now what is ur fight of the year candidate?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

I would say either Segura-Calderon or Burns-Martinez at this moment.

Jonathan (Northern, VA)

If we are venting, why in the world is Hopkins vs Pascal on PPV? No one buys Hopkins on PPV, except the people in this chat. Wouldn't they make more money having it on Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I suggest you go back and read the transcript froma couple of weeks ago explaining the economics of why Mosley-Mora was on PPV instead of regular HBO and apply the exact same logic.

Pete (NYC)

Why Freddie Hernandez for Berto? Negotiations for a rematch with Miki Rodriguez fell apart?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

LOL!

JMM (Mexico)

Anyone thirsty?

chris (overland park, ks)

Dan, why are you trying to save on travel? Do you have a budget from ESPN or have to pay yoruself?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

I wasn't talking about money. I was talking about on me not liking to travel as much as that.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, related to the crap you took regarding the Malignaggi article, did you have any backlash from the Pacquiao article about his role in the feud? Either from Manny or his team? And did Manny really do the JC Chavez Sr. thing of going "no english" when asked directly about it???

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

I heard a few things, but I don't really care. What I find hilarious is the folks who think I hate Mayweather and love Pacquiao and then I take a swipe at Pacquiao and now people think I love Mayweather and hate Pacquiao. I say people need to get a freakin grip and realize I have no dog in the fight and call it like I see it. Period.

Aaron (Hartford)

I remember when Paulie was in the mddle of getting crushed by Hatton that the HBO guys were crediting DiBella for getting Paulie as far as hes gotten and such a high profile fight with Hatton based on his poor performance. It really frustrates me when these guys cry so much after the fact. You need to let your work in the ring speak for itself and truth be told, Paulie has choked everytime hes stepped up in competition.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

I'm thinking Froch-Abraham has a VERY good shot at being FOTY.Should be a war.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

It should be a really good fight.

Tristan (palo alto , CA)

Is it true that the Berto Aydin fight isnt happening cause Aydin didnt want to fight in Vegas?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Yes, I am told he didn't want to fight in the US for the money being offered for that fight.

Steve (Hartford)

Any word on a possible next opponent for Victor Ortiz, and will he be on the Khan undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

He probably will be on that Dec. 11 HBO undercard but no opponent is set at this point.

Brad (Philly)

Great article about the dispute between Top Rank and Golden Boy. It's about time someone called Pacquiao out. For some reason the media has gone out of there way to kiss his butt.

Darin (Silver Spring, MD)

Any details on the Williams v Martinez undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Nothing yet, but there won't be a live HBO undercard fight.

JC (Panama)

Tell the Fight Freaks that want to watch some boxing tomorrow that they can watch the card from Panama live starting at 4:30 pm EST at www.tvmax-9.com

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

OK Freaks, sooooo many of you have been asking where Ward-Dirrell is going to take place that I just called Dan Goossen to check again to see what's up.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

And here is his response over the Bat Phone: I did have a meeting yesterday (with the Dirrell side)and I'm hoping to have it final later today. There are two sites out there and hopefully a decision will be made today and we can announce something immediately.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

So there ya go. How's that for service during a chat?

JEAN (montreal)

Berto's short list choices where: HERNANDEZ, LUJAN and JO JO DAN.......is HERNANDEZ the best choice, considering he has the worst ranking?!

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Of those three, I preferred Lujan, not that any of them are all that appealing. But I felt like Lujan has the most experience, has fought the better guys, is more known and has looked solid in his last few fights.

James (Lexington, KY)

I thought you said Margarito-Pacquiao was the last PPV of the year. Pascal-Hopkins is on PPV?!?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

I said last HBO PPV.

Newt (Jacksonville)

Paulie, a guy with 5 KOs should not be throwing stones, not that the stones would really do much damage, anyway ...

J in FLA (Cocoa, FL)

HERNANDEZ, LUJAN and JO JO DAN! Sounds more like ESPN2 filling out their fight schedule rather than an HBO fight.

Chris D. (Chicago)

Conflicting reports about Pascal-Hopkins site. I already bought plane tickets to Quebec City... are they moving it to Bell Centre in Montreal? Any idea when tickets go on sale?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

As far as I know it is in Quebec City and has always been planned for there, not Montreal. Do not know about tix.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

More breaking news from the Bat Instant Message. From Tom Brown, matchmaker for Goossen, regarding the undercard for Martinez-Williams 2. It will include at this point Tony Thompson, Fernando Guerrero, Steve Chambers, Luis Del Valle and Darley Perez.

Dan (Syracuse)

Last Sat. I was driving with my gf and she saw a garage sale and made me stop (drives me crazy but she loves sales) I left with two boxes of boxing tapes and she bought nothing. I smiled all week...guess I'm a fight freak

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Well what was on the tapes?

Darin (Silver Spring, MD)

Why didnt the Super Six reach out to Chad Dawson?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Why? Made no sense. He costs way too much. Makes terrible fights. Not logical at all.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Dan, I opened a box of cereal this morning and buried at the bottom was a WBC belt! I am now the interim Fiber Champion! ....For a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Nice. Let me ask you this -- if you put it in milk, soes it get soggy?

Alex (Lancs, Uk)

Follwing u on twitter now Dan! Really enjoyed your piece on Paulie. Who do you think are the most deluded/badly advised (by friends etc) boxers right now? Paulie must be high on the list, along with Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

All Freaks should be following me on Twitter -- @danrafaelespn. Most fighters are deluded.

Mikko (Indonesia)

Would have loved to seen Edison Miranda stepping into the Super Six. He holds a win over Green, which would have made a great storyline. He's also well known in Europe because of his fights with Abraham. Do you know if he was considered?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

He was not considered as far as I know, nor should he be. He was starched by Bute in his last fight, lost every round to Ward and barely beat Green. No reason to have him in. Not legitimate.

Jason Brantley (Ohio)

They should have a "Super" six for the heavyweights! Man....this would be awesome! They would have Wlad, Vlad, and...and...and...wait...can't think of anymore. Forget it...

Gabe (Portland, Or)

D$ do you think it would be good for boxing if there was only one promotional company?

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

No it would not be good. I strongly disagree with Oscar, who is as delusional as his fighters.

Cole (Payson,UT)

Am I the only one who's more interested in the Cheato side of things on the upcoming 24/7? I'm curious to see how HBO spins the wraps thing. It's not like they can ignore it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

HBO has assured me and everyone that they will not ignore the controversy.

Paul B (NY, NY)

Rank the chats: 1) Boxing Haiku chat 2) BBQ chat 3) Margarito court case chat 4) Freaks pile on Bing chat

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

All legendary.

chris (overland park, ks)

Dan is there a way to look up and find your old chats on ESPN.com

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Yes, they are all in my chat archive.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

The Bobblehead cronicles were legendary as well....

Frankie (New York)

Martirosyan-Wolak looks like a really good card. Who are you picking?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

That fight is a long way from done and, frankly, I will be surprised if it gets done for Dec. 18.

Dude...really? (Harvard)

Just scroll up to the top...their is a link for chats...

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Exactly.

Peter (UK)

Dan, is it true that Roy Jones once tested positive for steroids?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Yes, after the fight with Richard Hall in Indiana. Roy has always said it was taking Ripped Fuel, an over-the-counter product from a GNC.

Cole (Payson, UT)

Dan, is there a website that I can read your tweets?

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Yeah, it's called Twitter.

Norm (New Hampshire)

I like Kessler-Froch for FOY.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Nah, good fight, but not FOY.

Steve (Hartford )

Any word on the Pascal/Hopkins undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

Nothing specific just yet.

Cole (Payson, UT)

Who do you have a Fighter of the year right now? If Martinez beats Williams he'd have to be on the short list of candidates.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

That's a good question. If Martinez beats Williams, I think he'll be a leading candidate for sure.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, do you see Shane staying at 154 or going back to 147 for his next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I think he would for the right fight, like Berto.

Chris (Boston)

Am I crazy to say that top-to-bottom the Chavez Jr-Gomez card looks watchable? I think Antillon has a really good chance at beating Soto.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I think it's a very solid card that will be good entertainment. If it holds up, it's one of Arum's best cards in quite some time. The main event is a mismatch but I think will be action-packed. Donaire-Sidorenko is a very solid, interesting fight. Soto-Antillon could be a damn war. Rios against whomever I am interested in.

Todd (Lexington, Tn)

Who do you like better as a cruiserweight prospect Lateef Kayode or BJ Flores?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

BJ is beyond prospect. He's a legit fringe contender and now stepping up against Green. Kayode is much more raw and inexperienced.

Not Cole ((Not from Payson, UT))

Dan, is there a website where I can read your ESPN.com articles and blogs?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Links are on Twitter @danrafaelespn!! LOL!

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

What a slow weekend for boxing. Damn. I was just looking at my schedule.

Mike (TX)

Dan, you claim Pacquiao was signed to Top Rank when he signed with Golden Boy, but in a couple of articles back from when it happened, written by you, you say otherwise. Care to comment on the discrepancy?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

He was signed because he had signed for Morales, which gave Top Rank certain rights. What's so complicated?

Bob G (Saugus)

Was Roy sparring with the hook on when he injured his hand?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pay, the man, Shirley. Pay him double.

John (NJ)

no Dan...WBA KO TO DRUGS this weekend!!! Don't you get excited for Guillermo Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

I get as excited for Guillermo Jones as I would for a colonoscopy.

Chris (Nashville)

Do you think we will ever see Ricky Hatton in the ring again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

No. I believe Ricky is done for good.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

If the WBA is so dedicated to knocking out drugs, shouldn't they stop taking them before making their rankings?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

OMG that is legendary!

Peter (Mount Vernon, WA)

Dan, since the Roy Jones Jr fight is off, can I borrow his pirate costume for halloween?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

I'll ask.

Adam (DuPage)

Is Acosta out of the picture for Rios on 12/4?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Yes, it looks that way.

Chris ((Appleton, WI))

Last night I decided to watch the entire Holyfield-Lewis I PPV again, and I realized that all the Brits in the audience were singing, "There's only ONE Lennox Lewis!" So now we all know there's only on Lennox Lewis! I thought you'd get a kick out of that.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

They sang that for Lennox long before Hatton. I recall standing outside of Staples Center for the Lewis-Klitschko weigh in and about 100 Brits singing that song for like a half hour straight.

Walter (LA, CA)

Who's going to be training James Kirkland? Is it still Ann Wolfe?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

TBA. You should read today's notebook brother.

El Jefe (Calgary, AB, Canada)

In your opinion, why hasn't Rafael Marquez's career gained the same amount of attention as his older brother? Bad matchmaking by Nacho in his early career?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Hasn't had those kind of big fights his brother had and didn't fight as star-studded a weight class. JMM was at featherweight in the Morales-Barrera-Pacquiao heyday. Marquez was in at bantam, where there were no big stars to fight.

Joe (CA)

Dan, HOF credential question, more than Andre Ward question...What more does Ward have to accomplish in the ring to merit HOF. Just want to get an idea how much amateur career is measured in the HOF equation

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Andre has a lot more to accomplish. His gold medal counts as a big thing for me. He's off to a great start. He's won a major title by beating arguably the best guy in the division at the time and he has a great chance to win the Super Six. That would be big. But it's way too erly to say for sure at this point in his career.

Mike C. (Portland, Or.)

The Boxing After Dark theme is way better than the new HBO World Championship Boxing theme, but not as good as the old HBO World Championship Boxing theme. Agree or Disagree?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Agree. The new WCB bastardized theme music sucks.

Joe (CO)

Dan, does ESPN have a website I can go to for sports news and happenings? Like if i want to know what is happening in sports, and I don't have a TV in front of me to watch ESPN...do they have a website somewhere?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Twitter?

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Oh Roy. I wish more fighters would just walk away at the right time. I can only think of Lennox Lewis, Ricardo Lopez, Steven Luevano, and uhm, cant think of anyone else recently. Who else has left when they should've?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Those three guys did but it's rare. Historically, Hagler walked away and never came back. Same for Marciano (who died not longer after he retired).

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, regarding your tweet, what makes you like Ali-Frazier 3 better than Ali-Frazier 1?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

For pure sick action it's a MUCH better fight.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs)

Favorite beer?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

Root.

Cole (Payson, UT)

Say Jremain Taylor doesn't fight again. Would you say he walked away at the right time or hung on a fight or two too long?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

If he stays retired, he walked away at the right time.

victor (north jersey)

theres only ONE Dan Rafael!! walking in a Rafael wonderland hey hey

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

nice.

Matt (Danbury)

Dan, have you heard any backlash at Paulie for his rant against DiBella. Seems like hes got quite the reputation for bad mouthing people that used to help him ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

I can say that from what I have heard from people in the industry and from readers runs 100 percent in favor of DiBella.

Jose Sulaiman (Board of Governors)

Because of Mr. Kirkland's recent release from prison, we are stripping him of his title of WBC Prison Champion...and making WBC Prison Super-Champion Emeritus.

Mickey (Arizona)

You think Adamek will get a klitscho soon?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I think he'll get a shot at one of them in 2011.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

Dibella should be called the "Magic Man" because he had to work some serious magic to get Paulie to where he did...

Bob G (Saugus)

Dan, are you looking forward to tonight's SHO Box? Coleman or Lopez?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I dont have a strong opinion either way.

Steve (NYC)

What exactly did Paulie want DiBella to do for him? Paulie had huge fights in Vegas and at the Garden. What more?

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Give him every dime.

Jaime (Dallas)

Hey dan jus throeing it out there but since bothe paulie malignagi and clottey lost why dont they fight eachother?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Let 'em fight. I'll make sure to be somewhere else because that would be a terrible fight.

NYPD Blue (Brooklyn)

Hey DR, do you think Shannon Briggs has any shot against Vitali? I hear people say Vitali is getting old at 39, but Briggs himself is 38, so no real advantage there that I can see.

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

I don't give Briggs much of a shot at all.

robb (amherst, ma)

more ill-advised choice: paulies rant against dibella, or paulies dreadlocks and sagging trunks?

Dan Rafael
  (2:01 PM)

Draw.

Funky Guy (80's)

Dan - Boogie Nights or Saturday Night Fever?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Two of my favorite movies!

Joe Mesi Fan (Buffalo NY)

DTM, do you think we'll ever see Joe Mesi fight again or is his boxing career over.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Joe is retired for good I believe.

Paulie M (Brooklyn)

I WANT SOME CANDYYYYYYY

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

With the speed in which Paulie talks, he must have gotten alot in, in that 40 minute conversation.

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

I'm getting another headache thinking about it.

bubba (ottawa il)

Derek chirosa? What and who? Im a fight FREAK and have never heard of this guy and he might get a heavyweight title shot. Oh no, the heavyweight division dont suck, does it?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

He's a 14-0 fighter from England who has the British and Commonwealth belts. Very raw. Knocked out Sexton two weeks ago on the Magificent Seven card and also knocked out Danny Williams before that.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

Is this the same Lou DiBella who resigned as Jermain Taylor's promoter? He walked away from a couple of big pay days because he was concerned about Taylor's health. Is it the same Lou DiBella that Paulie is referring to?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

Yeah, same guy.

Ronak (NY)

Thoughts on Seth Mitchell?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Probably the best American heavyweight prospect. Hard worker, good power, getting better with each fight and gaining experience. I like him.

Jason (Riverside,CA)

Happy belated birthday to Mrs. DTM. Did you guys go to a nice restaurant to celebrate?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

No since it was during the week, but we have a reservation for at a nice place tonight. And, no, you can't join us.

Ty (Philly)

I just read your Manila article, remembering some of the shots Ali took against Frazier, Shavers and Norton would destroy normal humans did Ali have the best chin ever?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Cool, but I didn't write it.

Alex (Brooklyn)

What ever happened to Jaidon Codrington? A great offensive fighter. That bout with Bika on Contender was epic.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

He retired and joined the police academy.

NYPD Blue (Brooklyn)

Paulie needs a kick in the seat of his sagging shorts and be told to wise up.

NYPD Blue (Brooklyn)

Yes, happy birthday to MRS DTM! She has plenty of patience with us freaks!

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

I will let Mrs. DTM (at work) know.

Jack (Balt)

Thank you for calling Paulie out. He must be joking if he thinks Dibella did a bad job. Ditto for Buddy McGirt. Can't blame the trainer when you can't beat a better opponent, and you can't blame the promoter when you have no viable options due to losing.

Floyd Mayweather (Running from the cops)

Even I thought what Paulie said is stupid!

LGD! (MEXICO)

HEY rafa who is your best prospect in mexico right now?

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Obviously, Canelo.

Dave (NE)

Dan, do you think that the Roy Jones-Santiago fight will still take place by the end of the year? I know you dont like the fight, but Roy always puts on an entertaining fight when he faces low level opposition.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

I very much doubt it happens before the end of the year.

jay-money (dallas,tx)

mr. rafael may i offer you and your lady special wine from the JMM collection on this special ocation??

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Umm, no thank you.

Billy (Sactown)

Did Paulie blame Lou for the extinction of the dinosaurs too?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

No, he didn't go that far.

Mrs. DTM (at work)

Thanks for the birthday wishes, freaks!

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Any updates on Arreola's hands? When should we expect to see him back in action?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Goossen told me he's healed up and is training again.

Matt (Charlotte)

So how did you and Paulie end your conversation ? Did you just agree to disagree ?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

Yes, we're fine.

JD (NY)

Dan...that Wlodarczyk-Robinson fight was a VERY entertaining scrap...and it was just an optional defense. The Cruiserwights may be the 3rd or 4th most exciting division in boxing. Even the ordinary bouts lately are fun to watch.

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

I can't disagree. They've been making some good fights in that divisions.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

Finally saw the Tyson/Tupac 30 for 30 last night, it was pretty boring and I was hoping someone would come into the ring while that young dude was speaking his poem, and knock him out!

J.J.M. (Phoenix)

So there was no chance of getting Bika to take Kessler's place?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

No, as I wrote, he declined due to the recent passing of his father. He was not prepared to go into training camp.

Chopper (New York City)

Here's the pic of the week: Wlad and Hayden Panetierre at Oktoberfest. http://tinyurl.com/2cx9tjq

dan the fan (northridge,ca)

Good to hear Arreola is well enough to start missing training.

robb (amherst, ma)

is it true mayweather is sending mrs DTM an iphone for her bday?

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I think that is just a rumor.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, I am starting to enjoy the new quick hits throughout the week culminating with the Friday (notebook?) but for the love of god, please tell them to put some sort of pictures in with the story. This looks like internet circa 1995.

Dan Rafael
  (2:18 PM)

I agree, but not my call.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, Did you get the overseas dvd yet from Poland? I found it amazing that the Wlodarczyk-Robinson card seemed to be about 6 hours.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Not yet, I only saw the main event on the Internet.

LGD! (MEXICO)

good chatt, how do i become a freak?????lol

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Any tips, Freaks?

Billy (Patchogue, NY)

Curious to hear your thoughts on De La Hoya's interview in Broadcasting and Cable?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

He needs somebody at Golden Boy to tell him to shut up sometimes.

Reid (Cleveland)

Dan - don't forget Michael Spinks retiring at the right time.....

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Good one.

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

The first tip I'll give you LGD! is to not send messages with 5 question marks followed by a "lol"

John (Phoenix)

Show up for chats, read all Dan's writing, dont be an idiot.

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Good advice for aspiring Freaks.

Aaron (Hartford)

What ever you do...dont ask any Joey Gilbert questions...

John (San Fran)

does this mean paulie is banned from the bbq?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

No, he's invited. But he probably won't come and say he didn't know about it because it was promoted well enough.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga.)

LGD join Dan at @danrafaelespn, read the schedule, notebook, and quick hits.... and just for starters

Jeff (Gilbert)

LGD,You should ask Dan about the pending Tyson comeback....

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

No he shouldn't. Speaking of which, anyone remember all the stuff by some Web site saying Tyson-Holy 3 was about to be signed? Yeah right. That "scoop" worked out really well didn't it? What a joke. More of a joke were the mainstream sites and outlets that took that crap seriously.

J in FLA (Cocoa, FL)

What are your thoughts on Pascal / Hopkins? I think the old man can pull the upset.

Dan Rafael
  (2:24 PM)

I completely agree.

Mike S. (San Antonio)

Whenever Floyd is asked about fighting someone he always dismisses them...has he ever said who is a worthy opponent for hin

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

There are none.

Bubba (ottawa il)

And dont ask him why he hates floyd mayweather so much. FYI, He doesnt.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Learn how to spell Klitschko and Malignaggi

Ned (Hartford)

Paulie is still coming to the bbq, but he will claim that Lou was eating off his plate all afternoon so he had to go home hungry and without the proper respect that he deserves for polishing off 3 full plates even though everyone knew that he only deserved a shot at one

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Brilliant.

jay-money (dallas,tx)

dan what ever happened with roger mayweather's case????

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

It's pending. He goes to trial in November.

Gerardo (AZ)

LGD! it is very simple: show up to every chat, and do so only after reading the week's blogs and columns. In the RARE event that you can't make it, you must read the transcript within 24 hrs. Lastly, you should know every fighter that's mentioned in the chat; if you don't, it's your responsibility to research him (that includes Shower Door and the likes).

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Well said.

John (Phoenix)

Paulie is coming to the BBQ. Someone needs to spar with the kids without hurting them.

Todd (Lexington, Tn)

Do you think Odlanier Solis has a legit chance at getting a piece of the heavyweight crown?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

He can punch but rarely is in top shape and I don't think he has a prayer with either Klitschko. If he got a shot at Haye, they are more close in size and he stopped Haye in the third round in their fight at the 2001 world amateur finals. (I actually have a tape of the fight)

Dennis (Pittsburgh)

Wow! Someone from Hartford with a great post! Who says good things can't come from Hartford??

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

It happens every now and then. A miralce, I know.

Anthony (Houston)

So for my wife (then girlfriend)'s cousin's wedding last March, we set up the bridal suite, candles, rose petals, lingerie, the whole she-bang. Needless to say, it stirred up a little passion and the gf was in a giving mood. Right then I remembered that the Kirkland-Julio fight was on and thankfully discovered the hotel room had HBO. On the way to freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

I have no words.

Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)

Danaconda will you be making the troip to Anaheim for the Chavez Jr.-Gomez fight and undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

No sir.

robb (amherst, ma)

dtm, do you have (or are you allowed to have) a sentimental favorite fighter today?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Of course I do.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, who did you have winning Williams-Martinez 1?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

Martinez.

Brian (SL, UT )

D.R., Did Manny Stewart train Naseem?

Dan Rafael
  (2:33 PM)

Briefly. He was "co-trainer" with the late Oscar Suarez.

Ned (Hartford)

"Paulie is coming to the BBQ. Someone needs to spar with the kids without hurting them." I nominate John for FOTC (freak of the chat)

NYPD Blue (Brooklyn)

There are people scattered all over the Net who think Mike Tyson is coming back soon against someone or other to reclaim his former glory ... it's a sickness, I think.

Jeff (California)

Any news on Zsolt Erdei? Inactive for almost a year.

robb (amherst, ma)

clever, clever dtm. who is said sentimental favorite?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)

Danaconda, I'm an immigration lawyer, please tell Angulo I can help him with his immigration status so he doesn't have to travel by car across the country!

victor (north jersey)

more freak tips: always try and get a love child reference, stay away from valuev's poop and juan manuel marquez's urine..ect ect and dont hang with bing

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

I feel sick for thinking this... Roy Jones vs. Danny Santiago on the season premier of Friday Night Fights in January? Please don't ban me!

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

Would be good for FNF actually. Would do a rating.

John (Phoenix)

The STREAK continues.....10 straight chats. Bang! Bang!

Dan Rafael
  (2:35 PM)

I could end your streak in the blink of an eye and have no remorse for doing so.

Joel (Queens, NY)

growing up who was your favorite fighter??

Dan Rafael
  (2:37 PM)

I had a few. Early on when I started watching boxing I guess it was Leonard and Mancini. When I was a teenager Tyson for sure.

Ned (Hartford)

"The STREAK continues.....10 straight chats. Bang! Bang!" FOTC status rescinded

Al (Las Cruces, NM)

Dan, you said that you didn't think that having one promotional company would be good for boxing. Why not? Not calling you out, just curious as to what your thoughts are on this.

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

First off, would be terrible for the boxers because they would only have one place to fight. Look at UFC? The reason the fighters don't make as much as the top boxers, or even close, is because they only have one main promoter they can deal with. That is one of many reasons.

Joel (Queens, NY)

"I could end your streak in the blink of an eye and have no remorse for doing so." LOL!!!!!

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

"I could end your streak in the blink of an eye and have no remorse for doing so.".... I imagined Dan holding a Lightsaber up to Johns throat as I read this....haha!

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

LOL!!!!

Daniel (Playa Del Rey, CA)

I've been reading that Margarito is training like an absolute animal. What are the chances Margarito comes in on fight night a solid 160 and just overpowers Manny??

Dan Rafael
  (2:40 PM)

If you're a Pacquiao supporter, that's what you have to be worried about.

J in FLA (Cocoa, FL)

Don't ask when a person is fighting without first checking the schedule.

Ray (LA)

Don't ask Dan about any Billy Dib fights

Bubba (ottawa il)

Always read the notebook before the chat. The king freak hates to answer questions that are already in his huge notebook.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, how's that rain treating you in VA?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

It's been bad but finally sunny today!

marqus (ypsi)

d raf... how do u feel on tarver stepping up to heavyweight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:41 PM)

It's more interesting than seeing him fight again at light heavyweight, put it that way.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Thanks for your blog about DiBella and Paulie. I've been a Paulie fan but I thought his comments about Lou were outrageous. You didn't even mention that Lou got him a MILLION DOLLARS for the Hatton fight! I will not be rooting for Paulie when Golden Boy serves him up to Canelo or Mayweather and he gets another beating.

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - Finally got my copy of Calderon-Segura but I gotta say that I was disgusted with Col. Bob Sheridan's rant about how everyone needs to lay off the "innocent" Javier Capetillo. Shame on him.

Dan Rafael
  (2:43 PM)

Yeah, that was not cool and I let the Colonel know it.

Dave (Rochester, NY)

Dan, when was the last time you were in Oneonta? Ever go back to vist?

Dan Rafael
  (2:44 PM)

I couldn't even tell you. Has to be at least 12 years or so. Maybe when my sister used to live there.

Kevin (Va Beach)

Dan, what do you think of tonight's Telefutura card?

Dan Rafael
  (2:45 PM)

Will be interesting to see what Barrios has left after a long layoff.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Dan, I mostly agreed with your take on the Paulie/Lou situation, and Lou was certainly entitled to make a buck, but after the Khan loss his prospects were pretty slim, and if you say you "love" the kid, why not just let him out of his contract and not charge him $75k? When I first saw that I thought it was curious Lou just didn't let him walk.

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

Why should you let a guy just walk away from a contract when you have money invested just to watch him go somewhere else and make money? This is a business, not a charity. Lou, or any other promoter in the same situation, is entitled to that money. That's how Lou pays his office rent and pays his staff, who rely on that income to keep their jobs.

Randy (NYC)

Are they really letting Kendal Holt fight that guy, whoever he is? That seems like one of the worst mismatches on paper

Dan Rafael
  (2:47 PM)

Octavio Narvaez is a stiff, but he did come close to knocking out Vivian Harris in one round a year or so ago.

Julian (Walnut Creek, CA)

Read the notebook on Vlad's next opponent, but who do you think would be a better challenge, Chisora, Mormeck, or Dimitrenko?

Dan Rafael
  (2:48 PM)

None are great but I guess if I had to pick one of the three, I would say Dimitrenko.

Joel (Eastchester, NY)

Dan, any chance David Lemieux and Camacho Jr. will be available on US TV?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

Doesn't look like it.

Charles (DFW)

Why is Antwun Echols still fighting?

Dan Rafael
  (2:50 PM)

He needs the money to support his something like 18 (I kid not) kids.

jay-money (dallas,tx)

dan today is my wife's and i aniversary, she called to see what i was doing i told her i was on espn boxing chat. so she said ok then i'll call you back in a couple of hours!!! cool huh???

Dan Rafael
  (2:51 PM)

That is tremendous.

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Dan, who does Dibella have now in his stable? Green and Malignaggi have both been recent dissapoitnments. And of course Taylor is out of the picture too.

Dan Rafael
  (2:52 PM)

Sergio Martinez, Berto, Caballero, Glen Johnson, some up-and-coming guys like Edwin Rodriguez.

J.R (puerto rico)

what do you think about Wilfredo Vazquez jr? does he have star potential?

Dan Rafael
  (2:53 PM)

I think he's come a long way from when I first watched him. He's become a very good all-around fighter. He can become big in Puerto Rico and he is establishing a fan base in the Orlando area, where he has fought many times and will fight again on PPV in two weeks.

Gerardo (AZ)

LDG!: take note of jay-money (dallas, tx). That's a freak.

John (Phoenix)

Is it true that DiBella owns a minor league team in Richmond, Virginia?

Dan Rafael
  (2:55 PM)

Yes, the Richmond Flying Squirrels of the Double-A Eastern League.

Gil (NYC)

Has any boxer ever not spoken to you for a period of time due to a disagreement on your writing?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Yes. Bernard Hopkins didn't talk to me for like 4 years. The sun still came up every day and I still slept well at night.

BJ (LA)

OMG! Echols has 18 kids? Doesnt he wear gloves?

Dan Rafael
  (2:57 PM)

Apparently only when he fights.

Brendan (Cherry Hill,NJ)

Hey Dan, at 39 years old is this vitali klitschko last final fight against shannon briggs?

Dan Rafael
  (2:59 PM)

I very much doubt it.

Joe (Circle City)

18 Kids - That's ridiculous

Dan Rafael
  (3:00 PM)

But that's probably why Echols keeps fighting even though he has one wins since 2004.

Dan Rafael
  (3:01 PM)

Echols is 1-9-3 in his last 13 fights.

Evander Holyfield (Atlanta)

Man that guy has a lot of kids.

Richard (Kendall Park, NJ)

B-Hop not talking to you sounds more like a vacation...

Dan Rafael
  (3:02 PM)

Exactly. When we broke the ice and started talking again I joked with him about that.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Mr. Echols meet the Octomom!

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Dan did you read David Haye's comments claiming he is an equal to Wlad and Vitali becase he is a"world champion"?

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

David Haye is probably the most delusional fighter out there. He is a paper "champion" at best.

Antonio Cromartie (Meadowlands)

18 kids? pffft. I'll bet he knows all their names, too.

robb (amherst, ma)

echols has enough children that he could have each one be lineal champ in every division...with one left out of the party

Dan Rafael
  (3:04 PM)

That's funny stuff!

James (Lexington, KY)

Did BHop reconcile with you before or after the Pavlik fight?

Dan Rafael
  (3:05 PM)

Before the Oscar fight.

Homer (OH)

How many Ricky Hattons are in rehab?

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

Just one.

Ross (Indianapolis)

What did it take to break the ice with BHop after 4 years? Seems like he's the kind of dude that would carry a grudge forever.

Dan Rafael
  (3:06 PM)

His publicist and I are close and she worked out the truce.

Joel (Queens, NY)

uh oh looks like this is gonna be a legendary one

Anthony (Houston)

How did you score Cloud-Johnson?

Dan Rafael
  (3:08 PM)

I had Cloud close. I think I had it 116-112 but pretty much every round was tight.

victor (north jersey)

"echols has enough children that he could have each one be lineal champ in every division...with one left out of the party" has to be the post of the day...

Joel (Queens, NY)

why did B-Hop stop talking to you??

Dan Rafael
  (3:09 PM)

He was mad about something I wrote in USA TODAY that was critical but had somehow forgotten the dozens of positive stories that I had written previously.

Al (WI)

Dan, now that the Super Six Tournament has been saved, what does this mean for Valuev's poop?

Dan Rafael
  (3:10 PM)

One of the many questions I will not be pondering while out with my wife for her birthday dinner tonight.

Adam (DuPage)

Why did Top Rank ditch their plans for Barrera-Soto?

Dan Rafael
  (3:11 PM)

From what Arum told me, Barrera decided to take a bit of an extended break again and Beltran had not brought up the fight to Arum in awhile, so he is moving on with Soto for something else.

victor (north jersey)

boxers seem to give u grief over bad articles but u never seem to get the praise when you actually write positive ones about them....

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

Goes with the territory, although I have certainly had some fighters thank me for articles they have liked.

Brian (Penn State)

Hey Dan! Are there discussions going on for a possible Dawson-Cloud fight early next yr?

Dan Rafael
  (3:13 PM)

I think it's been mentioned as one possibility but I don't think there is anything solid right now.

Matt (Boston)

Hey Dan,To follow up on one of the earlier HOF questions. Considering Rigondeaux is one of the best amatuers ever could he get in the HOF on those credientials alone or would his pro career have to be of a high quality to get in?

Dan Rafael
  (3:14 PM)

The amateur stuff to me shouldn't be enough to alone get you in the HOF, but it's a great building block for the resume.

Gutterdandy (nyc)

David "Ducker" Haye has been making a lot of noise about how he will massacre Audley Harrison, but really, Harrison has already been massacred plenty of times.

Dan Rafael
  (3:16 PM)

Beating Audley doesn't mean a whole lot at this point, so let The Ducker blab all he wants. He likes to hear himself talk anyway. When he fights a legit opponent let me know.

Mitch (Oakland)

Let's hope Roy's fight get postponed on regular basis. He's fallen and he can't get up.

Richard (Oxford UK)

Say what you want about David Haye, but his next fight is going to do gargantuan business over here, and he will make a huge amount of money for fairly little risk, so who are we to bemoan that?? The Klitchko fight will come in time!!

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

That's fine but he still won't get any respect anywhere outside of the UK. He's a big fish in small pond. If he's cool with that then fine. Until he backs up his words by fighting a Klitschko, he doesn't deserve the kind of respect he thinks he should get.

Rich (Glendale)

I think Tarver is going to get KTFO against Aguilera in two weeks. He hasn't fought in a year and a half and hasn't won a fight in three years.

Dan Rafael
  (3:19 PM)

I think it's a dangerous fight for Tarver.

Dan Rafael
  (3:20 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Hope you get a chance to read all the stories from this week and the notes and quick hits and blogs and sked! Anyway, have a great weekend and talk to you next week. Peace.
