Fantasy Sports w/Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session. Three weeks down, many more to go in football... and baseball wraps this week for those still paying attention. Thank you for showing up and participating, and let's get going...

Mike (Philly)

I just picked up Lance Moore this morning. I'm I correct in thinking he could be a consistent performer this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Not sure I'd use the word "consistent" to describe him, but he should be valuable. It's tough to tell where Drew Brees will throw the ball consistently. All his WRs have value. But I would rank Moore second after Colston on the Saints, ahead of Meachem and Henderson.

Justin (OPKS)

Two questions, both of which are who to start: Vick or Rivers? and, Jermichael Finley or Chris Cooley?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

Weekly rankings are up, and they are free... Rivers and Finley for me...http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/football/ffl/story?page=10ranksWeek4QB

Bryan (San Antonio)

Is W. McGahee worth picking up in a 12 team league hoping Rice loses some time?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Yeah, I think McGahee is ownable, and even if Rice is healthy, he could be a goal line factor. I wouldn't expect much, though. I ranked Rice 10th this week at RB, so I think he will play, and he did quite well against the Steelers last season.

Nick (Dayton, OH)

Pick three RB's to start this week. Addai, Foster, Wells, Tolbert. I am leaning towards sitting Tolbert.

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

I would as well, but then again, I think Ryan Mathews will play this week, and play well. Depends on how that news pans out. If Mathews sits... well, I'd still play the other guys, actually.

Taylor (SLC)

Hey EK, how do you see Deangelo playing the rest of the way? do you think he picks it up. Was considering trading beanie or addai for him.. how do you rank those 3 for the season??

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

I'd still rather have DeAngelo than Wells or Addai, and I'm not losing faith yet. Let's see if things get better when Clausen gets some experience. Williams is going to have a good week, so now would be the time to get him. I'd deal Addai before Beanie.

joe (newton,ma)

while i'm waiting for rberger from pitt i'm plugging in hasslebeck and anderson as my second qb...henne and sanchez look good on the wire..any thoughts?thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

This week I would go Sanchez, actually. Yeah, I surprise myself sometimes. Two more weeks and Big Ben is back!

Mike (Philly)

Can I expect Laurence Maroney to get better as the year goes on?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Expect? No. He should be better than he was in Week 3, but then again, Moreno is clearly the team's top RB when healthy.

Tim (MA)

EK, do you think Marhsawn Lynch gets traded? If so where does he go and when?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Well, the Packers would seem to be a decent destination, no? But let's not count on a deal. The Bills are playing Lynch the most, and I do not think it's to showcase him. It's because right now he's their best option.

Rob (Orlando)

Santana Moss or Larry Fitzgerald for Jahvid Best

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Moss is off to a fine start, but c'mon, you have to keep Fitz.

Eli (Indiana)

Hey Eric, love your stuff. I am sold on Hillis, this guy has done everything he needs to do to earn his way into Clevelands starting lineup. 180+ total yards against the stingy run D of Balt? What do you make of this guy? All he has done is produce when given the chance, 6'2 250lbs and he runs LOW, not like Jacobs, this guy could be a darn good every down running back? Thoughts? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

It took me some time to believe it, because I saw Jerome Harrison run wild last December, but I am on board. Surprised it happened this way, but Hillis is legit.

Bob (Seattle)

Jonathan Stewart is sitting on my bench. Does he have any value going forward?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Our weekly Jonathan Stewart update: Yes, he will have value, but he's clearly not in a timeshare and not worth having active for awhile, until DeAngelo goes away.

Erica (Tampa)

Help a girl. please. I need a RB due to byes- do I play Donald Brown or pickup Torain or Darby (if Jax doesn't go). Also need a defense this week- SD or Da Bears? Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

I help all. I'd watch the Steven Jackson situation...I ranked him well last night, but if he does not play, then Darby becomes a top 30 RB this week. Otherwise, I'd go Brown. I wouldn't trust Torain yet, especially in a revenge game for his quarterback (McNabb). And Chicago, not an overrated Chargers D.

Kade (Texas)

Drop Addai or Wells for BJG-E?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

No, I wouldn't do that. Green-Ellis shouldn't be better than those safe RBs.

David Sailman (Philadelphia)

Hey Eric in a league where Rb bonus for 10 points for 100 yards rushing or receving.. knowing that who do i start this week Forte or Pierre Thomas? driving me nuts to try to pick one.

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Either of these RBs rushing for 100 yards seems unlikely, but Forte catching 100 yards worth of passes... I can see that.

Kabby (Seattle)

I am getting very tired of Colston and his non-production... Do I stick with him, or should I try to trade for someone else?

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

The minute you trade Colston, dontcha know what will happen? He'll catch 11 passes for 150 and a score. Keep him around.

John (Boston)

Thanks for posting things for baseball. Everyone else stopped.

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

My pleasure... I love baseball! And if anyone has a baseball question, ask it... If I see it, I can answer it.

Sammy (Boston)

How can you like Marshall more than Moss this week? Do you really think he'll have better stats?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Well yeah, that's kind of why I did it. But I ranked them first and third... doesn't seem like much of a battle to fight.

Cody (Seattle, WA)

Is houston's pass D really that bad? Considering benching Flacco @ PIT this week for Gradkowski v HOU

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

I considered it, too. Ended up with Flacco at 14 and Grad at 15. Can make the case... and I just feel like the Texans will have shootouts.

Ryan (Chicago)

Any chance Felix Jones becomes more than just a low-end flex play during bye weeks?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I've tried to convince myself his situation is aberrant, but I can't. He's shown little so far... but I wouldn't cut him.

john (montana)

do i keep portis or cadillac around or look towards waivers hillis is still available?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

I'd probably cut Cadillac for Hillis at this point. It sure doesn't look like the Bucs are going to stick with Williams, as Blount is being prepared for a large role.

Baseball!! (Indiana)

BASEBALL!! EK, Pick 7 of these guys for a dynasty keeper league:Morales, Santana, McCann, Beckham, McCutchen, B.J. Upton, Hamilton, Ellsbury, Sandoval, Pence and Wainwright. thanks!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Might be easier to name the 4 I wouldn't keep... Sandoval, Beckham, Morales, Ellsbury

Dan (WI)

BASEBALL!!!! Better keeper for 2011 season...Latos at $1 or J. Bautista at $5?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Wow, both are excellent choices. I'd say Latos though. Can't get better than one dollar.

Robert (Mississippi)

QB HELP Please....Orton or Sanchez this week????

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Read the rankings! Orton!

Matt (NYC)

Do you think LT is the better Jets RB to own? Trade Steve Smith (CAR) for LT?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

This week LT should be pretty good. His photo is leading our pages, after all. But I would be wary of making that deal. Smith is going to be productive.

Joe (Cambridge)

Steve Breaston, is he worth stashing or is his value low enough now that he'll miss the next month, and I should just drop him in favor of someone like BJGE off waivers?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

He's a No. 3 WR at best, so I wouldn't worry about stashing someone like that away. Plus, when Stephen Williams plays well, no guarantee Breaston has his value back in Week 7.

Keith (New York,NY)

How about a HARD question...Looking ahead to week 5, who is the best option to pick up off waivers and spot start - Roy E. Williams, Dexter McCluster, Legadu Naanee, Kenny Britt, Blair White or Lee Evans?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Yep, I only take easy questions so it's about time, right? I'd say Naanee and McCluster jump out to me, and the matchups are good, too. The Chiefs should be trailing in Week 5 at some point, and throwin'...

Mike (Raleigh)

Drop Celek for Zach Miller going forward?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

No, I wouldn't. Lot of Celek panic going on around the fantasy world.

Colby (Mau'i Hawai'i)

So you like Stephen Williams this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

Well, I ranked him 36 at WR, so I wouldn't say "like" as much as he has opportunity to be a factor for deep leaguers.

Troy (Pittsburgh)

Why do you take weekly start questions when you post your rankings? Anyway, I am jumping off of the Crabtree bus for good by dropping him. Is this a good idea? (Maclin as replacement) Rest of season in mind.

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

I have to post something! And there are thousands of questions here, and I see only a few at a time. Anyway, you're right, no more start/sit the final half hour! Maclin over Crabtree, definitely. Maclin was a free agent or someone else you chose?

Brian (Fl)

EK, Have you noticed peoples tendency to overvalue their own players? So many seem to think where they drafted a player equals their trade value. Try to get Greene, a late 1st early 2nd pick and people want AP in return!

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Happens all the time, really. Trading in fantasy baseball is so much easier. Greene can't be dealt right now for proper value, since he's done so little but was drafted so high.

micah (atlanta)

Please pick a side, PPR league: Hillis or Deangelo Williams? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

DeAngelo. Easily. Let's not get too excited about Hillis yet...

George (Boston)

Pierre Garcon - wait until 2011 or hold out hope he will live up to his preseason expectations? I am contemplating dropping him for Louis Murphy....

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Seems a bit premature to me, but then again, I do like this Raiders offense with Gradkowski slingin' it. I just wouldn't punt Garcon. Terrific offense to be in.

Steve (Santa Cruz)

Do you think Santonio Holmes' skill set is a good fit in the Jets' Offense?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

I would think anyone that talented could fit into any offense. That said, Holmes can't put up the numbers he did in Pitt. Jets don't throw enough.

Brian (Fl)

EK, see you just did it! Greene draft position is not relevant. The fact he is now a RB2-3 is what is relevant. If the drafter overpaid that doesn't mean someone else should. Anyhoo, rant over! Love your stuff.

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

His draft position is not relevant, except there was a reason he was a second-round pick, and that's why you don't give up on him or trade him for Jason Campbell. Doesn't matter to me where a player is selected, but if he's talented, and should gain opportunity soon - I mean, LT is how old? - then you wait.

Andre Johnson (Houston)

My ankle and Mr. Asomugha scare me....

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

I think you have to trust that the top players will produce no matter what. Except against a healthy Revis. Nmandi hasn't been like Revis for a year.

Jeff (Jax)

RULES QUESTION HELP!!!!! How do you like people to pick up players? I feel all players should be waiver claims, while others like for everyone to be a FA. I hate the fact that if I am with the family on Sunday afternoon, and player X gets hurt and I am unaware that just because someone is watching the game should claim his backup. What say you?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

I have leagues that do it both ways. I'm not someone who sits by the waiver wire every night, though. This isn't really a rules question... ALL leagues have to decide important stuff like this before the draft.

Al (ME)

Eric!! Someone just dropped Shonn Greene in my 12 team league. Would you drop Portis, Addai, Lawfirm, or Lynch for him? thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

I would cut LawFirm and probably Lynch for him. Greene will have his day.

Mike (NYC)

When are you guys gonna start lowering the Ravens D on the rankings? I've done better plugging based on matchup every week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Both systems work. Other than the Steelers, there are no can't-miss defenses... I have a team in which I find the week's sleeper, too.

Kyle (Portland, OR)

Baseball keeper question: Rasmus or Stanton? What about Hamels or Liriano? Thanks EK

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Hamels and Stanton. I could see Stanton hitting 35 home runs soon.

John (Harrisburg)

Would you make a move on Blount and drop Cadillac, or is that an overreaction to the news out of Tampa Bay?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

It's an overreaction, but in a keeper league I'd probably do it. Sad to give up on Caddy so early, but other than the many carries, there hasn't been much to like.

Fred (NY)

Pretty please! NOT A START/SIT: Trade Vick and Portis away for Schaub? Schaub really that much more consistent? Vick is carrying my team now

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Stay put then. The way Vick is playing, he might beat Schaub. I don't think so today, but actually producing against a reasonable defense like the Redskins will prove a lot.

Tony (Colorado)

What are your thought about Boldin going forward, have he and Flacco finally clicked, or was this week the point I try to deal him away? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Probably both. Perfect sell high time on anyone after a 3-TD week, but he should also remain useful all season, potential low end top 10 WR.

George (Seattle)

Am I getting too cute starting Hernandez and Z Miller as my TE and Flex? They are both coming off solid weeks and have very nice matchups. My other options would be Hightower or E Royal.

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Sounds like it. I'd probably use Hightower and Miller (Oak).

Lisa (school)

Best WR rest of the year? Simms-Walker, B.Edwards, D.Bowe, Lance Moore

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Stay in school! I'd go Bowe, MSW, Moore and then Braylon.

Jesse (Savage, MN)

BASEBALL!! Which one do I keep? Lester for a 4th round, Jaime Garcia for a 25th round, or Hanson for an 8th round? I know Garcia is the best value but wouldn't it be safer to lock up Lester?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I see no reason why Garcia will struggle next season... he ranks third here, but use all your early picks on hitters!

Dan (Philly)

More value by the end of the year? B. Jacobs or R Torain

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

I see what you're getting at, but let's not go overboard. Yet.

Chad (St. Paul)

A "Just in Case" question - would you rather stash someone like Kuhn on your bench or a random backup like R. Jennings?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

I think at this point I'd have to give Kuhn the nod. In a month neither of these guys might matter... play for now in this case.

brian (de)

EK, Who wins in a trade of LT/Nate Washington for Knox/Bernard Scott in a 12 team non PPR league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Unless I'm missing something, clearly the LT side. I don't really view him as a sell high... and what's Bernard Scott doing? Benson is safe.

Matt (Rockville, MD)

Eric, how do you think your wife would have handled it if her maiden name was Kara Bell? Also, am I crazy for starting LT over Mendenhall this week with Turner as my other RB.

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Believe it or not, that topic has been discussed... as for LT, no, not crazy. I don't know why you would sit Mendenhall though. He's doing all this without a big-time QB... just wait!

Jim (Chicago)

How can Fred Jackson, who rushed for over 1000 yds last year, basically be shut out in Buffalo? Does he have any value, or only if Lynch is traded?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

I find it strange as well. I would try to keep Jackson owned, because one of these weeks a really good player will emerge.

Epri (work)

read that P thomas missed practive. Ivory over R Williams if he gets the nod? PPR

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

I would assume yes, because Wiliams hasn't done much... but let's not assume Thomas misses the game yet.

Bob (Chicago)

The rankings have Foster and Turner pretty even this week with Turner getting a slight edge. I'm in a PPR league, does that give Foster the edge?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

I'd say so, yes.

Sean (DE)

Starting or sitting Bradshaw this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Looks like an every week starter to me.

eric (SF)

how high would you rank santonio holmes among WR once he returns? is he in the top 20?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

On the Jets, no. Not even close.

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

OK, our time is up for today, but thank you for the thousands of questions - might be a record today - and best of luck in Week 4 and beyond. And for those in baseball still watching, best of luck to you as well! We'll have offseason baseball coverage, too.... enjoy!
