Chat with Jim McCormick

Jim McCormick
  (11:01 AM)

Morning all, still basking in the Phillies' clincher here, but it's time to talk some football. If I don't get to your questions try me @JMcCormickESPN on Twitter. Let's get started...

Kyle (RosemeadCUZ, CA)

What are your thoughts on Bowe this season?

Jim McCormick
  (11:03 AM)

Well Cassel finally showed some life, albeit what can now be considered a downtrodden San Fran D, so that's a positive for Bowe. I don't think we'll get the season Bowe investors were expecting, in terms of high-end No.2 production, but I would suggest some patience with him as the KC run game might just be good enough to make this passing game somewhat competent.

The Sanchize (Bright Lights, Big City)

Am I THE fantasy QB in NY?

Jim McCormick
  (11:04 AM)

I'd still rather have Eli, but it's certainly closer. I'm somewhat convinced that this team will need to really dedicate to the running game at some point this season when Sanchez and the passing game go through dry spells.

jason (philadelphia)

what do you suggest i do with kolb with vicks running style of not giong down and taking hard hits is he worth keeping in my roster.

Jim McCormick
  (11:07 AM)

Jason from Philly with the creative writing style - per your questions - I wouldn't hold onto Kolb in 10-team leagues, but in a 12-team league or bigger I could see him meriting a roster spot, but if you are in a bind for a pickup I don't think it will cost you.

Schneebles (NYC)

Is there any emerging player this week worth using a #1 waiver priority on?

Jim McCormick
  (11:10 AM)

Hard to say what is available in specific leagues but I would pursue BJGE from New England, Hillis seems too obvious and is likely owned in most of your leagues. I can't say I trust the "Law Firm" - but he's the only back on the roster with some promise going forward, if that helps at all. The NE staff might just continue to toggle the carries, but it's a thin waiver week, it seems.

Jim McCormick
  (11:11 AM)

In deeper leagues Kenneth Darby might be worth a spot if Steven Jackson struggles to practice this week.

Kenny H (Lexington, KY)

is the Shonn Greene situation going to get worse or better

Jim McCormick
  (11:14 AM)

Not sure how it can get worse Kenny, but yes, I do see it getting somewhat better. This team will get back to running more, we just need to temper our expectations for now and hope that he forces his way back into fantasy lineups as the season wears on.

Brian (Florida)

Is maroney worth a roster spot?

Jim McCormick
  (11:15 AM)

Yeah, I suppose so, I think Daniels likes "his" guys and clearly he went out to get Maroney before Moreno even went down, so there is some promise, although it's somewhat limited by their pass-first tendencies and the glut of peers in the backfield.

Mark (Avon, NC)

What to do with Brandon Jacobs? Drop him or hold on and hope for a trade?

Jim McCormick
  (11:18 AM)

If I'm a Bradshaw owner I suppose owning Jacobs could make some sense, but I'm also not sold that Jacobs would be that great if Bradshaw were to go down. I wouldn't expect a trade, not in the NFL, and not given the current climate with the looming CBA issues. If you don't own Bradshaw, I think you are fine to cut bait if you find a better commodity available.

Paul (CT)

Is Michael Crabtree a good 'buy low'? Would you deal Mcgahee & Mike Thomas to get him in a deep league?

Jim McCormick
  (11:20 AM)

That's not a bad offer, although with Ray Rice potentially ailing Willis gets a slight bump in market value. I'd still take a flier on Crabtree with a low-end deal, see what else you can combine with Thomas.

Joe (NY)

Hi Jim - would you deal Maclin and Felix Jones for Steve Smith (NY) and Peyton Hillis? My RB's are killing me this year and need some help. I have R White, K Walter and J Maclin for WR's. Thanks!

Jim McCormick
  (11:22 AM)

I think you are paying for Hillis' performance last weak, and not necessarily the weeks ahead. Maclin is fast-becoming Vick's redzone target, and is the best player in this deal. Maybe see if you can leave these wideouts out of the deal and go for just Hillis with a different offer.

Matt (Mpls)

Give me a ray of hope on Calvin and Colston. Thought I had a solid 1, 2 punch--they've both (especially Colston) been dreadful. Big weeks on the horizon?

Jim McCormick
  (11:24 AM)

Yeah, two very disappointing situations here. There are some big weeks on the horizon, Matt, but the week-to-week dominance that was expected of these guys, particularly with Calvin, seems unrealistic.

Shane (Portland, OR)

How would you rank these waiver wire RB's? McGahee, M. Lynch & Green-Ellis

Jim McCormick
  (11:26 AM)

I'd rank them Lynch, Law Firm and McGahee. Lynch seems to have somehow embedded himself back into that backfield. Whether it's to showcase him for a move or not, he's somehow not a promising bench/depth commodity.

ryan (milwaukee)

what is going on with the Chargers' running game and is it EVER going to get going?

Jim McCormick
  (11:28 AM)

Getting their big tackle back in the fold could certainly help, but this team seems more apt to abandon the run when it doesn't click early on. I still believe that Turner wants to strike more of a balance, but we might have to wait until we get a truly healthy Mathews, if that's possible, back into the feature role. He remains their best bet of getting a consistent ground game going.

Mike (Toledo)

Jim, what's your take on McCoy now that Vick is the starter? That Lion's game was awesome but it seems like an abberation.

Jim McCormick
  (11:29 AM)

Yeah, kind of like how the Colts ran on the Giants in Week 2, the McCoy workload in Detroit seems a little atypical to how this offense will generally unfold. I do still see considerable value in McCoy as a No.2 fantasy back, particularly in a PPR context.

Javier (Miami)

Is it time to cut bait on Meachem and all the Saints WR's?

Jim McCormick
  (11:30 AM)

I would think so, there are 4-5 different guys on that team that in any given week could either score twice or simply do nothing.

KC (OH)

Are you encouraged about Forsett after seeing how Seattle distrubuted the workload?

Jim McCormick
  (11:31 AM)

It's encouraging, for sure, this week in St. Louis will be a good litmus test for how this scenario plays out.

Steve (Blacksburg, VA)

Would you trade Mendenhall for MJD?

Jim McCormick
  (11:34 AM)

I'd actually prefer Mendenhall - more stable offense (somehow) and the defense and special teams will put the offense in some good positions. It's not even as much about MJD's current play, as he looked good enough against Philly this week, but more so its that his team in general is just not very capable of competing late into games, a reality that could really subdue his production.

Jim McCormick (seriously) (Canada)

What's Vick's value since he continues to rack up huge FF points week after week? If you were to trade an RB for him do you think McFadden is the price? Or aim higher? I don't think I can convince anyone he is worth Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers value though.

Jim McCormick
  (11:36 AM)

I'd aim a tad higher than DMC, but at this point he's also ascending to a new level of value with his production. I think you could actually go a little higher, maybe throw something in with Vick and go after a Foster or bummed out Steven Jackson or Ray Rice owner. I don't think you'll get Peyton Manning value either, but you should still get a good price while Vick is putting up elite totals.

Andy (Casper, WY)

Will mike wallace be an every week starter once big ben is back? he's been so inconsistent!

Jim McCormick
  (11:37 AM)

He's a burner, first and foremost, and the nature of his game is going to result in weak weeks and monster games, just how it is. I would expect a tad more consistency when Roethlisberger returns.

Jacob (Indiana)

Orton or Palmer going forward?

Jim McCormick
  (11:37 AM)

Orton, and it's not close to me.

Sal (PA)

I know as a general rule we should try to stay away from owning multiple players from the saem team, but are there times where exceptions can be made? In a trade that I am working on I would be getting both Brady and Welker. Welker would be more of a depth option rather than an immediate starter. So is the risk worth taking or do I target a different WR?

Jim McCormick
  (11:40 AM)

I don't subscribe to any general rules, rather I think you are best off just considering each scenario and deal on its own. There's really no conflict in owning Brady and Welker on the same roster, if anything it could be fun when they connect. That New England passing game remains special, investing in it at this level certainly has some risks, but the rewards far outweigh them.

Joe (New York, NY)

Which WR in the g-men passing attack to you want right now? It seems it is going to shift everyweek.

Jim McCormick
  (11:41 AM)

You called it, it's going to shift every week. Nicks seems to be the most trust worthy option at this point, but is still somewhat inflated by the huge first game.

Art (THE NATI)

Good Morning jim, I have Mcnabb this week cause romo is on a bye so how do you think he will do going back to philly? What kind of numbers can i expect?

Jim McCormick
  (11:44 AM)

I think his numbers will resemble what we saw in St. Louis last Sunday - some nice yardage totals but the touchdowns seem tougher to come by with the lesser targets he has in DC. I'd consider starting him if I had a bye, like in your case, but I'm not sure he isn't just an average fantasy option at this point.

Jordan (Portland)

Who is a better play this week. A gimpy Best or a very inconsistent Forte?

Jim McCormick
  (11:45 AM)

I'd prefer Forte, both this week and going forward. Best might have some amazing singular outings, but he's limited by that line and the offense, he'll have just as many lean outings as big ones.

Jacob (Michigan)

Hey Jim, what can I expect from Hillis going forward?

Jim McCormick
  (11:47 AM)

He is certainly doing his best Alstott '99 impersonation. I think the Browns, particularly Mangini, prefer a big back and will give him the chance to be the feature guy. He is solely a matchup play for now, in my opinion, as the offense around him could limit him just as much as his fumbling concerns might. He's a really nice commodity either way, considering that he was likely a waiver addition in most formats.

Mike (B-More)

Hey Jim, who would you rather have as a handcuff? Torain or Blount?

Jim McCormick
  (11:50 AM)

I'd rather have Torain - I think there's more upside in that role, especially given his history with Coach Shanahan dating back to Denver. Blount is a handcuff for Caddy, but I'm not sure that Huggins and Graham don't also complicate that backfield. Same can be assumed in DC with Torain and Williams, but it appears that they favor Torain at the moment.

Jimmy (Colorado Springs CO)

Should I start the Seattle or Cincinnati defense this week? Standard league.

Jim McCormick
  (11:51 AM)

I'd prefer the Cinci D, for years now those StL initials have looked so inviting for opposing fantasy defenses - I'm not so sure that isn't shifting as Bradford is becoming a threat to opposing defenses.

Wes (Columbus, Ohio)

I have Sidney Rice stashed away on my short bench. Any value now if I push 2009 stats year to prospective trader?

Jim McCormick
  (11:52 AM)

Tough to be a Rice owner in a league with a shallow bench. Not sure if you can get much for him in that context since he isn't expected back for 4-5 weeks at the earliest.

Eric (PHX)

Does Danny Woodhead have any upside? He seems very elusive.

Jim McCormick
  (11:54 AM)

First off, I caught this yesterday from @si_vault - http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/7dy1vm/i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/global/swapper/201009/100927.07.jpg/r:t Pretty funny stuff there, but I don't see much fantasy value here. He'll split work with the bevy of vets in New England, but it's cool to see the kid get a shot.

Ron (DC)

Jim: Brandon Lloyd a reliable weekly starter now? Also, Maroney or BJGE off waivers this week?

Jim McCormick
  (11:56 AM)

Lloyd certainly has value in a PPR format right away and given the matchup and your own roster situation I could see him being a flex or No.3 option to consider. I'd go with BJGE over Maroney.

Bob (Houston)

Hey Jim, do us Greg Jennings owners have to seriously start worrying? I know it's too early to panic, but Finley and Driver have arguably been more consistent this year and I'm doubtful if Jennings can reach those elite WR1 numbers I was expecting.

Jim McCormick
  (11:59 AM)

Hey Bob, much like Colston and Calvin Johnson owners I think Jennings owners are in for an up-and-down season. Colston and Jennings are somewhat similar, actually, in that they are capable top targets that are subject to the many talents around them. Their respective elite QBs have a lot of options on nearly every play, which deflates their production.

Gerald (Mo-Town)

Do you advise trying to buy low on Shonn Greene in a Keeper League? Tim Hightower and Donald Driver for Greene?

Jim McCormick
  (11:59 AM)

I don't think you even have to pay that price, Gerald, maybe Hightower and a marginal wideout gets it done.

Jim McCormick
  (11:59 AM)

Ok, let's get some lightning round in and wrap this thing up...

Matthew (Plano)

Last try Jim!! Hillis or Benson this week? I can't find your rankings.

Jim McCormick
  (12:01 PM)

I can't find them either, but I'd go with Benson - he's also coming off a big outing and the team likely won't have to abandon the run, as Cleveland might be forced to if they get down big.

Taylor (Philadelphia)

Tolbert or BJGE?

Jim McCormick
  (12:02 PM)

Tolbert, gotta see BJGE stay on the radar here for a few consecutive weeks.

Will (VA)

Should I drop Lauranitis next week for Cushing?

Jim McCormick
  (12:02 PM)

Sure, you can always recover if the move doesn't pan out.

John (Denver, CO)

Orton or Sanchez?

Jim McCormick
  (12:02 PM)

Orton

Jim (NYC)

Bradshaw or D Will this week?

Jim McCormick
  (12:03 PM)

I prefer Bradshaw.

Jeff (Moscow, ID)

Hasselback, Henne or Garrard?

Jim McCormick
  (12:03 PM)

Hasselbeck.

Nick (Dallas)

Celek or Keller rest of the way?

Jim McCormick
  (12:03 PM)

Seems like Keller and Sanchez are building a dangerous connection here.

Ken (MO)

Somebody dropped the Packer D last weekend. Are they worth a #1 waiver pick?

Jim McCormick
  (12:04 PM)

If waivers rotate every week, then for certain. It's worth a try either way, since their matchup is so compelling and they have the elements to be the rare consistent fantasy defense.

Joe (Decatur, GA)

What caliber of player can a Moss owner expect to get back in a trade?

Jim McCormick
  (12:06 PM)

A really elite one? I'm not nearly as down on Moss as others seem, particularly in this chat today. The guy has three scores and will have his big days, just be patient, the rumblings of age and demise are amazingly premature.

Joseph (Bozeman, MT)

If you're in first, you keep pushing as hard as you can, right?

Jim McCormick
  (12:06 PM)

Clearly, it's a long season.

Dan (Ann Arbor, MI)

Bye week fill-in...Hasselbeck or Gradkowski?

Jim McCormick
  (12:07 PM)

Hasselbeck is the safer call here despite the savory matchup with Houston for Gradkowski.

Brandon Jackson (Appleton, Wi)

what happened to me??????

Jim McCormick
  (12:08 PM)

You aren't a feature back in this league...Kuhn will continue to get work but this roster needs another back badly.

Sean (NY)

DJ Williams dropable in IDP (any position)

Jim McCormick
  (12:08 PM)

Sure, anyone is dropable to me in IDP outside of a few elites.

Joseph (Bozeman, MT)

I should have asked the question in a better way (keep pushing). Do you leverage depth and use waivers to try to crush or do you stand pat in general because your team is obviously decent.

Jim McCormick
  (12:09 PM)

You continue to be proactive and aggressive, treat your roster to be almost as fluid as it would be in any other position in the league.

Adam (PA)

Bradford or Garrard as a backup QB for the rest of the season?

Jim McCormick
  (12:10 PM)

Bradford, and it's not close. Garrard might not be the QB down there for much longer if the offense remains so weak.

Rich (Weymouth,MA)

Do you see Vick coming back down to earth as he faces tougher D's in the next few weeks... sell high candidate?

Jim McCormick
  (12:12 PM)

Hard to say, a good deal of what he's done has been somewhat independent of the defense he's facing - if that makes any sense. What I mean is that some of the throws he's made, particularly the touch passes in this past outing would seem to work in most any context. He might not be the top-three option we are currently seeing, but not sure why he can't be top-6 or 7 going forward. If you sell, get a high return, but I don't think you'd be selling high.

Kenny (NOLA)

rookie keeper league, who do i keep going forward? Blair White (Indy) or Jordan Shipley (CLE)...white did catch a TD in his first game with peyton...what do you think?

Jim McCormick
  (12:13 PM)

Shipley bodes as a better future commodity - they invested in him in the draft and really like him as their slot guy. With White, we'd need to see more from him, as Peyton is certainly a star-maker.

Alex (NJ)

top 3 wr in order rest of year...GO!

Jim McCormick
  (12:14 PM)

Austin, A.Johnson, Moss.

Mark (State College, PA)

Vick or Cutler

Jim McCormick
  (12:14 PM)

Play the matchups, you could be best served having both, but selling one could also fortify your roster - good problem to have.

Steve Smith (Carolina)

Did I just have one bad week? Am I still top 15? Will Jimmy throw to me a little better from here on out?

Jim McCormick
  (12:15 PM)

Top-15? For sure, but possibly closer to 15 than top 10.

Mike (CHI)

Orton will finish in top ? of QBs...

Jim McCormick
  (12:15 PM)

10

Cabral Huff (Georgia)

Philly D or Atlanta D this week

Jim McCormick
  (12:17 PM)

Atlanta, that SF team is crumbling.

Jake (Spokane)

If Orton finishes in the top 10 of QB's who is in the top 10 now that won't finish their?

Jim McCormick
  (12:19 PM)

Eli, Favre, Flacco...not sure who is out, but Orton is in the same class or even in a better spot to produce than these three, with Flacco potentially usurping him. Whether Orton is the 9th, 10th or 12th best - the point is that he's very usable and particularly worthy given an inviting matchup.

Andrew (St Lou, MO)

This is so frustrating, you answer two Q's from the same guy and I can't get one lousy answer from you? Come on man, vick/clark or foster/keller?

Jim McCormick
  (12:20 PM)

I just pull the questions, don't focus much on the names, to be honest. This is a very close deal, but the Vick/Clark side is getting slightly more here, but it's also contextual if the Vick side already has a top QB to lean on, then it makes more sense to deal him off.

Jim McCormick
  (12:21 PM)

Thanks everyone - thousands of questions poured in - impressive stuff. Hit me up @JMcCormickESPN if you have any more queries and I'll talk to you Thursday afternoon.
