Chat with Matt Mosley

mark (NYC)

What's the biggest problem area with the G-men. The O-line? Linebackers? D-line?

Mosley
  (12:00 PM)

The biggest problem Sunday was six personal fouls and two awful turnovers in the red zone. The Manning decision to channel Stabler was the worst. They didn't lose that game because of any of the things you mentioned -- unless you just single out McKenzie.

Glenn (Fresh Medows, NY)

Short, Sweet and to the point...Has Tom Coughlin lost the New York Football Giants?

Mosley
  (12:00 PM)

Not yet.

Kevin (NJ)

Do we see Andrews start this week?

Mosley
  (12:01 PM)

I think Coughlin will give it some serious thought, but he'll probably want to give McKenzie a chance to bounce back from that embarrassing display.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

With Vick at QB, do the Eagles have a shot at winning 11 games this year?

Mosley
  (12:02 PM)

I think that's a little optimistic. Let's see how he does against a good team before we get too carried away. The Lions and Jags don't count. I think they've combined for one win. The Packers saw Vick for a half but they hadn't had a chance to prepare for him.

Brian (NJ)

Obviously that was a terrible loss for the GMEN. But I am taking some solace in the fact that the Giants dominated the game yardage wise. I still think this is a 10 win team and I really think they beat the Bears Sunday night. Thoughts?

Mosley
  (12:03 PM)

I think they could certainly beat the Giants. But I wouldn't take too much solace in those yards. If they don't lead to a W, it really doesn't matter.

Mosley
  (12:04 PM)

Probably Kosier more than the other two. Witten will be fine. He always is. This is a nagging thing for Kosier. Wouldn't shock me to see him miss the Titans game. Needs to get the MCL right. Tweaked it. Week to week, I'm told.

voice of reason (NYC)

who is that Gene Wojochoski? he had the Skins as dominant? Does he watch football....Dallas should have beaten the Skins but the moons aligned just right that night....

Mosley
  (12:06 PM)

I think you messed up Gene's last name, but that's understandable. I remember seeing another "c" in there at some point. I think Gene was sort of having fun with that column. I'm not sure he really thought Shanny was Super Bowl bound. The way the Cowboys played and coaches against the Skins, I wouldn't use the phrase "should've won."

BSB (Philly)

It seemed like Reggie Wells played better than Nick Cole at RG. Do you think a change is in order at that position?

Mosley
  (12:06 PM)

I think Andy Reid really likes Nick Cole and will try to give him an opportunity once his knee's right. But in the interim, Wells will need to be the guy. Looking like a good trade.

LL (VA)

Matt,Whats your skins remark for this week sir?

Mosley
  (12:06 PM)

Sorry?

Chase (Fort Worth)

Matt - would you still rank the Eagles receiving core ahead of the Cowboys?

Mosley
  (12:07 PM)

Yes.

Andy (Manhattan Beach, CA)

Hey Matt,Haynesworthapalooza continues, fortunately its been buried behind a lot of other NFL news. Can you give me an update, as well as a good reason as to why i should care anymore?

Mosley
  (12:08 PM)

No, I don't think you necessarily need to worry about caring about that situation until he looks dominant on the field. Right now, he's just an overpaid backup type player.

matt (pa)

matt you were so right about kevin kolb good one

Mosley
  (12:09 PM)

hahahahahaha

derek (wilkes barre pa)

yo matt, the redskins have the ability to be a great team if they would just go out and trade for a big play receiver, don't you think?

Mosley
  (12:11 PM)

I didn't see anything against the Rams that would suggest "greatness." Sam Bradford moved the ball at will and Steven Jackson raced for a 42-yard TD. So no, I don't think this team is a WR away from being great. I do think a receiver opposite Santana Moss would've been nice. Even Patrick Crayton would've been a much better option than Joey G.

tmscfinest (canada)

Rank the QB's in the Beast as of right now

Mosley
  (12:12 PM)

After three games:1. Vick2. Romo3. Manning4. McNabb

Len (Boston)

What happened to the skin's running game? Seemed they abondoned it way too soon this week

Mosley
  (12:14 PM)

It wasn't there in the second half. Shanny indicated that Portis may have been hurt. Shanahan and Bruce Allen should've been out getting RBs and WRs in the offseason. They are hurting at those key spots. Not sure why you'd leave yourself exposed in those areas. Meanwhile, the Texans take a guy off the practice squad and turn him into a Pro Bowler. That used to be Shanny's gig.

Wes (The Colony, TX)

When does the bye week win become official? Can we go ahead and proclaim the Cowboys 2-2 or do we wait til Sunday?

Mosley
  (12:15 PM)

Wade wants you to wait until the 4 p.m. ET hour on Sunday. At that hour, he will pump both fists into the air in an awkward fashion.

BSB (Philly)

How about a knee jerk re ranking of the Beast teams after 3 weeks. We won't hold you to it later this season Matt.

Maly Mal (Jerz)

Matt, you were very critical (seemed upset) that Fat Reid turned to Vick. Vick is clearly the better player. You indicated that it was too early to turn away from Kolb, but can't the same be said for Kolb?? He has two and a half starts in the league. All of you fell in love with Kolb after those two starts, and no one is mentioning that HORRIFIC performance in Baltimore in 08. I think Reid saw flashes of that in week 1, I know I did. Do you still think it was a bad choice to ride with Vick??

Mosley
  (12:16 PM)

Maly Mal, I admitted at the time of the change that it's certainly better for winning in the short-term. But I'm still not convinced Vick's going to keep tearing up the league. Let's see him play against a good D that has a week to prepare for him. If he shreds the Cowboys, then we'll have to revisit this issue.

BSB (Philly)

How about a knee jerk re ranking of the Beast teams after 3 weeks. We won't hold you to it later this season Matt.

Mosley
  (12:19 PM)

1. Eagles2. Cowboys3. Redskins4. Giants

SprungOnSports (Long Island)

What do you think is the Giants' biggest problem and how can it be resolved?

Mosley
  (12:20 PM)

I think the Giants are undisciplined football team. And when that's your foundation, it's hard to win football games. SIX personal fouls. Team lost its composure. I'd like to tell you that Tom Coughlin teams don't get a lot of penalties, but when you do the research, his teams have really struggled with that.

Wes (The Colony, TX)

Where is Romo going on the bye week?

Mosley
  (12:21 PM)

I think he's going to see some big-time Big 12 football in Waco this weekend.

Newt (Jacksonville)

Has Kareem McKenzie lost his starting job? His display was every bit as embarrassing as the final two games last season. And Antrel Rolle may need some time in Time Out, too.

Mosley
  (12:22 PM)

I think both of those guys will get another chance this week. Rolle's not really warming to the Coughlin Way. I'll just assume that McKenzie lost his mind for one week and that he'll bounce back.

LL (VA)

Whats your anti-skins remark for this week!!!

Mosley
  (12:22 PM)

Oh!! Um, let me give it some thought.

David (Waco,TX)

Mr. Mosley, Any chance Cowboys make a play for Logan Mankins from NE? Thanks.

Mosley
  (12:22 PM)

Nope.

Wes (The Colony, TX)

How do you feel about the Rangers playoff rotation? Who do they match up better against?

Mosley
  (12:25 PM)

They actually match up better with the Yankees right now. New York's rotation has been struggling and Rivera's in a bad place. But it's not like playoff baseball vs. the Yankees has been a good thing for the Rangers. I think Cliff Lee's proven that he can be a phenomenal No. 1 option in the postseason and I expect C.J. Wilson to be on top of his game. I give Sabathia the edge against Lee by a hair but I think CJ and Colby Lewis can hold their own after that. All that said, I'd probably rather see them play the Rays. I'll be out there tonight.

Les Nessman (Cincinatti)

DeMarcus Ware 3 sacks....Keith Brooking still over pursued on some of those big runs and got lucky off setting penalites negated his pass interference....he was inconsistant, made plays then gave up plays

Mosley
  (12:26 PM)

I think you're being a little nit-picky. Brooking had the huge sack when the Texans were knocking on the door in the second half. Ware was a beast. The Cowboys saw a big-time weakness and exploited it the whole game. I hope that "supplement" really did Duane Brown some good.

tmscfinest (canada)

After that god awful left handed pass, 8 total TO's and his pedestrian numbers, you got Manning ahead of McNabb? Really?

Mosley
  (12:27 PM)

It's a fair point, TMS. Let's have them tied for last.

Matt (Philly)

Some Stewart Bradley facts, in his last full season (2008) the eagles defense ranked 4th in yds/g and 3rd in yds/game. The season before (2007) they were 8th and 9th respectively and last yr they were 12th and 19th. This season when he has played the defense has given up 6 pts. Is Stewart Bradley the most important defensive player in the beast? If not the most dominant ILB in the division?

Mosley
  (12:28 PM)

DeMarcus Ware is probably the most important player, although he's rivaled by Jay Ratliff, Orakpo and Tuck. But from an ILB standpoint, you're probably right about Bradley.

JAck (Seattle)

So since Buehler made that kick, are teh Cowboys goign ot keep him...he will lose 2 games for them this year

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

Yep, status quo at kicker. Give the man his due. Everyone wanted him out and he goes out there and makes a huge one at the end of the first half.

Marc (Malden, MA)

I am close to saying to heck with the Redskins season. Care to talk me back into them?

Mosley
  (12:29 PM)

Let's give them Sunday's game, Marc. If they beat the mighty Vick and the Eagles, they'll be right back in the mix.

Zach (CT)

Matt, I was furious at the call that took away the Dez Bryant TD. How is that even a fair rule? He clearly got shoved out of bounds. I can see how it would work if he voluntarily left the field of play, but when you are shoved out there is little you can do. It seemed like the DB knew it too and just let him go after shoving him out. I am outraged. Not really, but you get the picture.

Anthony (Dallas)

Matt,Looking at the Boys upcoming schedule after the Bye, 3 of the next 4 at home, with the one roady against a very pedestrian Vikings Team. Too optimistic to predict 5-2 after that stretch?

Mosley
  (12:32 PM)

No, that could certainly happen. But for folks to be talking like this Titans game is a gimmeee seems a little ridiculous.

David (Halifax)

more catches this week desean or santana?

Mosley
  (12:33 PM)

santana

Mike (Long Island)

Matt, I think you and many other media members are simply giving the Giants -- and their front office, especially -- credit for way, way more talent than they deserve. Can anyone really say that any Giants LB would start for any other NFC East team? And the D-line is grossly overrated -- Osi clearly is a shell of himself, and let's just say that the Chris Canty Era has come and gone.

Mosley
  (12:36 PM)

Mike, I think the Giants have plenty of talented players on defense. And they actually did a really nice job against Chris Johnson the other day. They could've used more pressure on Vince Young, but the guy only threw for 118 yards on 10 completions. It's hard to put that loss on the defense. It was about the red-zone turnovers and personal fouls.

Jonny (Queens)

How concerned should the Giants be about Peppers? He looked legally unblockable last night

Mosley
  (12:37 PM)

It's something you have to watch pretty closely. Diehl couldn't handle Freeney. The Bears may move Peppers around a little bit. They'll have to offer the tackles some help. Look for Shawn Andrews to get plenty of tackle eligible plays.

BSB (Philly)

Why is the NFC east fare so poorly against the AFC south?

Mosley
  (12:38 PM)

Thought the Cowboys looked pretty solid against the Texans on Sunday. And the Eagles didn't seem to struggle against the Jags. Let's see how the Cowboys fare against the Titans now.

Dave (VA)

What's the bigger problem with the Redskins defense - the 3-4 scheme or the actual execution on the field? How can these issues be redressed?

Mosley
  (12:39 PM)

No one said this 3-4 transition was going to be easy, Dave. It's more about the execution right now. On the Jackson TD run in first half, Kareem Moore came racing right past him. Players have to make plays, sir.

Justin (Durham, NC)

Was hiring Jim Haslett a mistake for the Skins? I'm beginning to think it was. Maybe Shanahan should have gone for a good 4-3 coordinator instead; I hear Tennessee's D-line coach is outstanding.

Mosley
  (12:41 PM)

Too early to bail on the Haslett Era. He'll be fine once players truly understand what he's trying to accomplish. And let's not act like the Skins have a ton of talent along the D-line. Haynesworth's struggling to pick things up and I don't think any of us thought Kemoeatu was going to be dominant. This is sort of a patchwork deal we're talking about right now.

shanard ((slc,ut))

MATT, if garrett goes with the 3 wr set it could exploit mismatches all over the field instead of the 2 te set.

Mosley
  (12:43 PM)

I've seen him do some of the 3 wide stuff. They like the two-receiver sets because they like to run out of that formation. But Garrett's not afraid to go 3 wide. Once Dez has a better grasp of the playbook, you'll see things open up a bit more.

tmscfinest (canada)

My biggest worry going into sunday's Redskins-Eagles game is Joselio Hanson. He's probably the worst nickel CB in the league & couldn't cover a pylon. If McNabb

Mosley
  (12:44 PM)

I don't know if Hanson's THAT bad. But Kyle Shanahan will certainly try to move Moss around quite a bit and get him in some matchups with Hobbs and Hasonn. So yes, that's an area the Skins will be looking to exploit.

Clay (Charlotte )

Can I please get one more week before we can anoint Vick as being a top 5 QB?

Mosley
  (12:45 PM)

Yes, I'll grant you one more week.

Drew (Altoona)

With all the talk about the Eagles secondary being a concern, has the play of Nate Allen and the improved tackling of the defense silenced that, at least for the time being?

Mosley
  (12:46 PM)

I don't think "silence" is the word I'd choose. But Allen's doing a pretty nice job. Smooth player who is a willing tackler. I think it will be interesting to see how Shanahan attacks him in the middle of the field. It could be double move city.

chad (austin)

Do you feel Jason Garrett is a little more deserving of the coaching blame in Dallas over the last two years than Wade, considering that Wade's defense has consistently performed well, while the offense has struggled with consistent execution. Of course Jerry and Bill Parcells get some blame for not drafting wisely on the offensive line over the years too.

Mosley
  (12:47 PM)

I would probably agree with you, Chad. Garrett no longer looks like a certain head coach for someone. But I thought he did a nice job Sunday.

Tom C (Jersey)

Is there a store that sells asbestos pants because my seat is really hot.

Mosley
  (12:48 PM)

I saw a pair at Shelpler's in Mesquite recently.

Maly Mal (Jerz)

It's gonna be hard for Shanny to do all those double moves with all the pressure the Eagles generate.

Mosley
  (12:49 PM)

Well, let's see how this plays out. Clinton Portis doesn't do a lot in the running game these days but he's still one of the bests when it comes to picking up the blitz. Kyle Shanahan is going to find a way to keep McNabb on his feet. OK, that's all I have for today. Let's get things going next week at the same time if that works for you guys.
