Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to our weekly chat. The new notebook is posted, the sked is updated and there are plenty of news stories and blogs from the week, so check it all out and come strong. Slow weekend of fights, but still plenty to discuss with a huge fall coming. Let's get to it.

Louis (NY)

Soooo dissapointing to have Dirrell out of the tournament. What opponents are being discussed for Ward? Will that person assume dirrell's 2 points?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

It has not been determined if Ward's Nov. 27 bout will be inside the tournament. But if it is, the person will not get Dirrell's points. I have not heard of specific names for Ward at this point.

Steve (Minneapolis)

November is a good time of year to be a subscriber to HBO and Showtime. Looking at the schedule for November it would even be worth signing up for those providers for just that month alone.

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Agreed. Both nets have some strong shows between November and the end of the year.

Sean Beatty (Ireland)

Dan,why have you Macklin ranked ahead of Pirog?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

He's beaten better guys.

Joe (NJ)

Can Nagy Aguilera please KO Antonio Tarver so we don't have to hear why Tarver thinks he can beat the Kltischko's

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Funny, I have seen quite a few comments like this. If Aguilera is going to win, it's probably going to be by a knockout.

Will D (Cumberland, RI)

Tito Dantana, do you think the Super 6 survives the latest blow of Dirrell dropping out? I know Ken Hershman says yes, but it looks doubtful.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

The tourney will survive in some capacity, yes.

ron (bethel, ct)

Dan the man any word about showtimes ppv?? is it going to be a 4 fight ppv and any of the possible undercards being discussed with you?? let the freaks know!!! I really think they need to set up a solid undercard to get the fans to cough up the cash

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

The undercard is not set. Golden Boy is working on, however names being thrown around as possible to appear on it are Librado Andrade, Daniel Jacobs and Daniel Ponce De Leon, although nothing at all is set yet.

Ryan (Youngstown)

Is there any chance we could see Alexander Frenkel in the cruiser Super Six if one of the expected participants either falls through or suffers an injury?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I guess anything is possible, although his name is not one that I have been hearing.

Garth (Stamford, CT)

Dan, Showtime really needs to pull the plug on the Super Six, there is nothing they can do to legitimize the tournament anymore. I say, just have Ward fight the winner of Froch/Abraham and end this mess.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Ward against that winner would make the most sense. But they have certain contractual obligations that could make that difficult. But that is the best thing to do.

Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka (Fiji Islands)

Aloha from the Islands my brother. I feel compelled to speak on something that is troubling me. My brother Marquez is getting ridiculed for admitting he drinks his own urine for strength. Now the superfly is telling the million of fans this is wrong. What he should be doing is what the superfly used to do drink your opponents urine before the fight. That way you gain strength and weaken them. Don Murraco - dark , Bob Backlund - sweet , Iron Shiek - loaded with amphetamines. Aloha my Brothers

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

These are my readers.

Sean (Richmond)

I'm intrigued by the ides of Alvarez vs Mosely but Salivate at the idea of Alvarez vs Berto. What's the chances of that happening next year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Probably unlikely to see Berto-Alvarez any time soon. But I am quite interested in following Alvarez's progress.

James (Lexington)

Danomatic,Will Robert Guerrero ever fight again at 130? I'd love to see him fight Caballero if Caballero can make noise and KO Litzau.

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Robert's days at 130 are over.

PeteNice (FMT)

Dan, is Bika being considered as a replacement for Dirrell?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Bika declined the Green fight because of his family situation -- his father had died and he was not prepared to go into training camp. Not sure what would be different here since the dates are the same for the fights and Ward is an even harder opponent. So I tend to doubt it.

Aaron (MA)

Do you think Danny Garcia gets by Mike Arnaoutis tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I do. It's a solid test for Garcia, but Arnaoutis is not what he once was.

Ryan (Youngstown)

Hey Dan, great blog the other day about the Fall fight schedule. It looks like Showtime has a slight edge over HBO in the 3 major head-to-head cards, although both lineups are beyond solid.

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Both have solid lineups. Showtime took a big hit without the Ward-Dirrell fight.

Mack (The Bay Area, California)

Does the boxing schedule for November and early December make up for a somewhat lackluster 2010?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

It helps, but it does not totally make up for it, no.

Koichi (NYC)

Really really really hope Ortiz vs Koltenik gets made bc it'd be such a great option for the winner of Khan vs Maidana if they can't match up with the winner of Bradley vs Alexander.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

I was told today that Ortiz-Kotelnik is unlikely to be made. Besides financial issues I am told Kotelnik wants to move up in weight, doesn't want to make 140. I seriously doubt that fight happens.

JD (NYC)

Dano---as a Mets fan, your Yankees updates are murder. That said...I love ya! Any updates on the Wlad Dec defense? Is Chisora all but certain?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Go Yanks! Big win last night. Chisora is the leading candidate and the Klitschko side is still negotiating the fight with Frank Warren, but it is not done yet and might not get done.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, just read the quick hits...Saul Alvarez wants to eventually fight Shane, I don't see the plus side for Shane in taking this fight. Would Shane just be a steppingstone for Saul A. if this fight happens in late 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

It's an interesting fight and typical of boxing -- hot young star against fading veteran champion. I can see it happening. Shane's a competitor and could take most of the money for that kind of fight with Alvarez taking less for the opportunity to notch a name like Mosley's on his resume. But Alvarez is at least a few fights away from being ready for that kind of fight.

Miguel (Los angeles)

I think it is disgusting that some fans are questioning Dirrells withdrawal, having experience psychological problems myself that is the worst thing you can experience and it is the least understood field of medicine. Hopefully Dirrell will be ok and not have long term effects.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Agreed. People always want to think the worst. Talking to Andre's uncle at length yesterday I could not help believe what he was saying about his nephew.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Why would you make up a head injury of all injuries? Even if he comes back fine and it was all fake, you're giving every commission a reason to look at you more closely. What would be the point of that?

Nizzi (Des Moines, IA)

Dan, if my math is correct, with Dirrell exiting the tournament, does this mean Arthur Abraham is automatically in the Semis?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Good question. But I don't think so because if he loses to Froch he would have three points. Froch would have either four points or five points. And the winner of Johnson-Green could have as many as three points. And if Ward's opponent is in a Super Six bout and knocked Ward out the mystery fighter would also have three points and then it goes to the scorecard tiebreaker. So Abraham is probably in, but I don't think he has clinched a semi just yet. But at this point who knows?

Peter (Philly)

How close is Mike Jones to crackin your top 10 at 147?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Probably a fight or two depending on who he fights and what happens with guys ranked above him. He's knocking on the door.

Benjamin (Little Rock)

Anyone who jumps on guys like Andre Dirrell, Justin Morneau or Kevin Kolb for bowing out due to head injuries needs to have their own head examined. A concussion (or worse) isn't just something you can shake off.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Agreed.

Jeff (Ft. Lauderdale)

When can we expect Linares to get a crack at a world title?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

He has a fight this month, so let's see what happens. But if he wins, I would imagine it won't be too long.

Bert (Minneapolis)

What's more likely in the Spring, Cotto-Chavez Jr or Cotto-Mosely II?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Cotto-Chavez. That's a Top Rank fight and the one Arum and HBO PPV are interested in for March.

Mack (The Bay Area, California)

If Hopkins beats Pascal, does that set up Hopkins-Bute at LHW?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I would say that's a very reasonable possibility.

Reid (Cleveland)

Dan - Who do you think will be standing at the end of the Batamweight Tourney on Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

I have no idea. I can see all four guys possibly winning it.

Jared (Los Angeles, CA)

Evander Holyfield eventually wants a crack at David Haye or one of the Klitschko brothers. I think that he has a shot to win. What do you think the outcome of one of those fights would be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

LOL. I would give Evander zero chance of winning any of them. ZERO.

Bill (Memphis)

Dan, I?ve been checking your blogs and tweets regularly; did you ever get the final number of PPV buys for Moseley-Mora?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Did you read today's notes? Apparently not.

chris (new york)

hey Dan, can you please settle a disagreement me and my friend had, he feels cotto's ko of judah was more impressive becuase cotto beat judah down. I feel kostya Tszyu's ko of judah was more impressive because it was at a more comformable weight class and judah was more in his prime at that point. which do you think was more impressive?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Both impressive to me.

Cole (Payson, UT)

Dan; I don't doubt Dirrell medical issues at all. My only question is why not say that was the reason awhile ago instead of taking the criticism and leaving fight fans guessing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I agree. I sort of think the Dirrell camp hoped it would clear up and kept delaying an announcement until finally it could not delay any more. But who really knows?

Carl (Richmond)

I would rather believe Andre Dirrell and be wrong than the opposite. Boxing doesn?t need another Gerald McLelland incident.

Bob (Boston)

Dan, great reporting on how the Dirrell cancellation came about. While I don?t doubt that Dirrell has a legitimate injury, I do find the whole process his handlers took quite dubious. Why was this not an issue a few weeks ago when they announced Ward-Dirrell was back on? To me, the sanctioning bodies should keep him out of a title shot for at least one year.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Very dubious. If the kid was injured, they should have said so ages ago. Clearly, because of this issue the fight was never going to happen Sept. 25 either even if the promoters found a site. Even if the injury is legit, which I tend to believe is the case, there is a lot of nasty stuff here going on behind the scenes.

Jerry (Raleigh)

Dan, great article on the busy slate in November and December. What is the one fight you are most looking forward to? For me, Williams-Martinez II.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I would say Martinez-Williams 2 and probably Marquez-Katsidis.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Dan, after Bute's light workout against Brinkley, could he be an option for Ward if they delay Ward's fight to early January ? Would Bute be allowed in the tourney or is he contractually obligated to fight on HBO ? Otherwise, I think Librado Andrade is the only legitimate contender at 168 who would deserve a fight with Ward ...

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I'm not sure how many times or how many ways I can say this: Lucian Bute is not going into the Super Six.

Nick (Queens)

Dan, get Richard on the Bat Phone...Is the Hopkins PPV going to be aired at movie theaters! The freaks want to know!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

I will ask.

silver warrior (niskayuna)

Shen football is 5-0.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Wow. GO PLAINSMEN!!!

Curtis (Washington, DC)

DTM, any interest in attending the Adamek-Maddalone fight in person?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Not really. That comes right in the middle of a very busy travel stretch.

Chuck (Philly)

Dan, maybe an unfair question, but I'll ask anyway. Since I'm more of a casual boxing fan, only willing to buck up the pay per view money for the real mega-fights. That being said, gun to your head, need an anser now - does Pacman/Floyd happen in 2011? Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Honestly, have no idea. Lots of issues there not the least of which is the possibility that Floyd will be in jail.

Tony (NYC)

Dan, do you expect them to fast track James Kirkland or will his handlers bring him along slowly?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

The plan at this point is probably two tune-up type fights and then a real fight.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

It's interesting...Abraham's freak-of-nature power has ended the tournament (and maybe the career) of his two super-six opponents. He's creating a persona similar to Sonny Liston and Max Baer. If I were Froch, I'd be scared silly.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I was thinking just that. He's ruined two guys and knocked them both out of the tourney, although one was on one of the cheaptest shots you'll ever see.

Anthony (Sacramento)

Dan I just thought of a fantasy matchup that could have happened but didn?t: DeLaHoya vs. Tszyu at 140! Whats your opinion on who would have won?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

That fight was often talked about. I would have favored Oscar at that time. He was quicker and a better puncher.

Joey (Chicago)

Dan, will you be revealing your selections for the boxing HOF this year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Yes, after I fill in my ballot, which is sitting right here on my desk next to the computer I am chatting on, I will.

JP (L.A., CA) [via mobile]

Dan, I'm watching JMM vs Pac 2 as we chat. They're in the 8th round. I know the outcome but still feel the anxiety. I really want to see a third fight between them.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Gotta love a Freak who watches fights while chatting. You get a gold Freak star.

David (Houston)

Martinez v Williams only tv bout that night? I though we all discussed and agreed no more one fight telecasts lol

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

What fight takes place the week before?

Aaron (West Fargo ND)

Dantastic ... love your "quick hits" articles! Love them!! Straight, to the point articles. Great job.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Thanks.

Lee (Norwalk, CA)

Bigger injustice of never happening....De la Hoya/Trinadad II or Pacquiao/Mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Pac-Mayweather, by far.

Steve (NYC)

How many mroe tuneups does Potvekin need exactly?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

No idea. Most of his career has been a tune-up.

Warren (New Zealand)

Once you vote, how many get into the HOF? Is there a threshold of votes need to enter, or is it top 3?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

The top three vote-getters get in. But if there is a tie they'd all go in.

Cole (Payson, UT)

Glad you figured out twitpics for the HOF ballot, that was cool to see. I don't know why I was expecting something more elaborate, but the ballot looked a quiz from 8th grade.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

It's very basic. There was also a cover letter and a sheet explaining how many go in and the specifics of each category, but nothing elaborate.

bubba (ottawa il)

Dan, I take my hat off to showtime for getting this far with the super 6. I say finish it the best way they can. There are still a couple pretty good fights that could be made from the torney. Why people are ripping on it is confusing. Let showtime finish what they started, no matter how they do it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

My point from Day 1 was when/if it gets messed up, at least we'll get a bunch of good fights along the way. So far we have gotten six solid fights. We'll get Froch-Abraham too at least and even Johnson-Green. So at worst, we'll get eight nice fights out of the 12 we were supposed to get. If that's how it ends I can live with that even if it's disappointing.

Bob (Hesperia)

If Martinez beats Williams, he's fighter of the year easy

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I pretty much agree.

bubba (ottawa il)

Mosley-mora with 150,000 buys? Not bad king freak. For a fight that really wasnt even promoted. Boxing is dead? LOL. Sure it is.

Jake (England)

Just watched Abrahams shot on Dirrells and it looks worse and worse each time. huge blow

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

People who say Dirrell was faking are idiots.

Nick (Queens)

Dan, I don't know why Richard Schaefer is happy about 150,000 buys...All that is, is 150,000 people who will never buy a PPV again!

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Why? The undercard was highly entertaining.

tony charisma (cameron, nc)

Has David "the ducker" Haye called u to express his anger about the criticism he's getting or is he ducking u too

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

No, but my phone is open to him at any time.

E (Kansas City)

What do you know about Mercito Gesta? I've heard some people talking about him and wondered if you knew anything about him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I've seen him a few times. He's a lightweight and pretty exciting to watch. He'll headline on Telefutura in a couple of weeks so you can watch him for yourself.

Darren (Dallas, Tx)

Dtm, would you watch the replay of Mosley vs Mora over a WNBA game?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Yes.

John (Phoenix)

Dan, any news on Segura? Any insight would be great.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I've heard there's some discussion about a rematch with Calderon.

JD (NYC)

Haye will be in 1st row for PRIZEFIGHTER tomorrow night in London to scout future opponents.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Only the guys who lose are eligible.

Warren (New Zealand)

Who selects who goes into the HOF for the other categories, Old Timers, Non-participants, Observers, Pioneers?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

They have the HOF board of directors, selected historians and selected media.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Don't for get to follow D$$$ at danrafaelespn on twitter!

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

What he said.

Rico (San Antonio)

Other than picking up another payday in December, what does Wladimir Klitschko possibly have to gain by fighting any of those tomatoes on his list of opponents?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Should he not fight? It's not his fault he's cleaned out the division. He can't force Haye and Povetkin to fight him. So he will go about his business. I commend him for staying active.

ES (NY)

I was playing hide and go seek with my lil nephew and I was it. Had trouble finding him but did find Haye hiding in the woods near my sister's house.

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Dustin (Wichita, KS)

Is your version of Mosley-Mora on HBO on Demand in Spanish with subtitles? I thought the only good that could come of watching it again was hearing Lampley rant like a psychopath about how terrible it was.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Yes. I checked it just out of curiosity and it was subtitled and in a horrible way with giant letters over the action. Ridiculous.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

D Nice. I know he already has a fight scheduled, but how would you like to see Pavlik step in and fight Ward? I know, impossible, but I'd like to see that fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Not interested in that and not happening as you said.

Brian (Toronto)

Yes or no, the biggest cloud hanging over boxing is that Pacquiao/Mayweather fight never/not happening ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Agreed. It's brought the whole sport down.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

DTM, hows andres brother, anthony, look? I've heard about him, but havent seen any of his fights, wondering what you thought about him as a prospect

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

Decent prospect. Has not developed quickly in the pros. He was out for awhile because of cancer, but he's back now and fighting. He has a fight Oct. 15 on the Tarver-Aguilera undercard.

Tomer (New York, NY)

I do find it interesting that people crap over Wladimir and Vitali cleaning out HW (besides 3-4 guys who are not interested fighting them, at least at this time). I wonder what they'd say about Joe Louis' title reign if it was going on right now...

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Exactly.

Darryl (Montreal)

Hey Dan, how long have you been a voter for the Boxing HOF? Do you attend the enshrinement ceremonies?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

I've been voting for probably about 8-9 years. I have been in the past but not for many years. Usually I am at a big fight covering it on the weekend of the inductions. I used to go every year as a fan before I began covering boxing. Best part is the big memorabilia show the day before at the Canastota High School a block from the HOF. I used to go there and blow what little money I had at the time on all sorts of crap.

ES (NY)

I told my wife I wanted to be the invisible man for Halloween and she asked why I wanted to dress like Winky Wright.

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Pay him again, Shirley.

David Haye (England)

Did somebody mention Joe Louis, fantastic I am going to get my manager to ring his people up right now

Andy (England, UK)

Hey Dan, have you seen much of Dereck Chisora before? Do you give him much hope against Klitschko?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

I have seen some of his fights. I give him almost no shot of winning. Too raw, too green, not experienced enough, not the athlete that Klitschko is. I think Klitschko crushes him.

Brian (Toronto)

Whats some of your best boxing memorabilia ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

I have some cool stuff from over the years. My favorite thing is a fight worn cornerman jacket from the Oscar-Gatti fight that Gatti signed for me. Still has a blood stain on in.

Koichi (NYC)

Haye would duck a visit to Joe Louis's plot in Arlington Cemetery.

Don (Georgia)

Wlad fighting a scrub in December still draws a larger crowd that 99% of the fighters in the US.

Jonathan (Atlanta)

My wife just got our free HBO extended till next year!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

PARTY TIME! No if only they'd bring back G-String Divas.

Miguel (Los angeles)

Does it annoy you when people use the letter "u" to say you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

What do u think?

Greg (Los Angeles)

You cant fault Vitali and Wladimir for completely dominating everyone that has been put in front of them. People keep dogging these guys as if there is a great heavyweight out there that guys are avoiding, but that is not the case.

Tomer (New York, NY)

Any update on Sergei Dzinziruk's next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

No, but I would expect him to show up on HBO in the first quarter of 2011.

Benjamin (Little Rock)

For what it's worth, I'm thrilled that the Road Warrior is in the Super Six. Love watching him fight. When Glen says he'll make weight easy, I believe him. I think he schools Green.

chris (new york)

have you watched Prizefighter? is it any good?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

I have watched most of them. They are usually pretty entertaining shows. Usually they have a mix of young guys, former contenders sprinkled in with maybe a former titleholder here or there. Solid shows for the most part.

Ali (Tampa)

I whole heartedly agree that Dirrell WAS NOT faking the injury on the fight night. It was scary. However, considering how Dirrell/Ward don't seem to want to fight each other, the 9/25 bout was strangely never made, and Al Haymon's involvement, I have a tinge of suspicion about the validity of Dirrell's current state. Not sayin he's lying, and I tend to like him, it's just a curious late development.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Couldn't agree more.

Jay (MD)

I didn't know Uncle Roger had another fighter, but that was a sweet knockout by Coleman.

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Roger trains several fighters. The Coleman KO on ShoBox last week was sensational.

Danny (florida)

is egg salad supposed to be crunchy?

Jerry (columbus)

Dan I have a Super Six Idea. Give Ward a bye because he already has enough points to advance anyway, and then we advance the top three from the remaning 4 opponents. Very easy fix and it does preserve the tournament's integrity.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Problem is Ward is guaranteed a third fight before the semis and wants his money.

mike (bellmore, NY)

ohhhhhhhh danny! Does Hughes seal the deal on Saturday night?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I hope so!! LET'S GO YANKS!

Paul B (NY, NY)

Good to see that you bleed pinstripes as much as I do. Go Yanks baby! I am heading to the game sat night and am hopeful for an uneventful sweep.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Sweet.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

We have news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I forwarded Richard Schaefer the question about whether Pascal-Hopkins would be available in the movie theaters and he wrote back, "most likely, yes."

Dre (Miami)

Dan, I don't know if you followed the story about the LeBron James in Vegas story getting pulled by ESPN.com because the writer didn't identify himself as a journalist. When gathering information on a boxer that happens to be in your presence, do they all know you, or are you required to identify yourself as a journalist first?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

They know me. But I also don't go to Las Vegas parties to hang out with fighters and then write about those parties.

ron (bethel, ct)

Dananator!! Just got ringside tickets for nov 6 judah vs. Matthaysse and I'm psyched!! I think you said it in your blog but I think this is a sleeper pick for a great fight!!!! also besides guerrero and sadam ali any other prospects on the card I should pay attention to??

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Cool, have fun. Off the top of my head, I don't recall what else is on the card, but the full lineup is in the sked.

Rhymin Jack Simon (Abbey Road)

Like him or not, Dan Rafael always has something to sayHis weekly Friday chats really make my dayAnd while the current lack of big fights totally reeksAt least we have Dan to hang with us freaks

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Nice.

John (New York)

Are you voting for Tyson?

Nick (Brooklyn)

Do you think Tarver can land a title shot at heavyweight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

He might get a shot because he has a name in a weak division.

David (Boston)

Congrats, Dan, looks like the Yankees are on their way to BUYING another World Series title.

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

LOL. Typical jealousy. They play by the rules. And if you look around the diamond they have tons of homegrown players -- Posada, Cano, Jeter, Gardner, Pettitte, Jaba, Hughes, Rivera, Robertson, etc....... Go cry somewhere else. And -- GO YANKS!

Cole (Payson, UT)

Love when Sox fans are relegated to cheering against the Yanks cause the Sox are irrelevant. And the Sox are Top 5 in payroll, not like you the Royals!

Ryan (Youngstown)

Come on David, I hate the Yankees as much as the next guy, but YOUR Sox try to do the same EXACT thing. They just can't do it as well as NY.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Red Sox fans are worse than Mayweather fans and Pacquiao fans combined.

Craig D. (Philly)

Yo Dirrell said he will bring the scrambled eggs to the BBQ.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

LOL, not not nice.

Eddie-L (Nairobi,Kenya.)

Dan The Man, i am your ardent fan south of the sahara,i follow your blogs, chats, notebooks religiously.i totally loved the barbeque,if i bring a few goats do i attain freak status?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I have no words.

Kevin C. (San Jose,CA) [via mobile]

Hey Dan. What's next for japans Hosumi hasegawa?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Supposedly, he's moving up to featherweight.

Brian (Penn State)

Your boy Donnie Baseball just an rbi double in game 5 of 95 ALDS on espn classic. Good game bad outcome for Yanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

That game makes me sad.

Dustin (Wichita, KS)

How do you see Ortiz-Kotelnik playing out>

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I don't because it's probably not happening.

robb (amherst, ma)

dammit dtm. stupid sox fans are ruining a good chat. i love my sox dearly, but some fans STILL fail to recognize that (despite our own homegrown talent) we won our series' on the backs of free agents

Jeff (Dearborn, MI)

Do you think Brinkley has the power to KO Bute? Everyone I've talked to think thinks he should be fighting at 154.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

If a guy lands the right way, sure, anyone can get knocked out. That said, I do not give Brinkley a serious shot at winning. But I know he'll be in there giving it his all.

jerrell (huntsville,alabama): [via mobile]

Do you think troy ross will be in the cruiserweight super 6 tournament?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

He won't be in at this point.

Lee (Norwalk, CA)

When was the last time you dealt with a boxer and thought, "What a jerk...hope he gets knocked out!"

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Probably this week sometime.

Gino (The Bronx)

Dan, do you think HBO would buy an Adamek-Haye fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Yes, if it was being made.

Derek (edmonton, alberta)

Dan, I appreciate the great work you do in providing reliable boxing news, but I'm not interested in following you on twitter as I don't want to read your constant tweets on baseball and football. Just some candid feedback. Keep up the good work. You are a trusted source for boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

See it's MY Twitter and I Tweet what I want. If you don't like it no problem. Although most of it is boxing-related.

Glen (CT)

Duke fan...yankee fan....celtics or lakers???

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Unfortunately, Knicks.

Justin (Seattle)

As a Mariners fan, any hating I do with regard to the Yankees is complete JEALOUSY, nothing more, but at least I acknowledge the problem.

Riad (London)

do you sometime get approached directly by promoters regarding your opinion on possible match up?

Manny (Miami)

Wow, just got caught up and it must be bizzaro week; only two questions about Mayweather and no mention of the love child; in fact the WBC has decided to make this week's chat the "Bizzaro Super Interim Champion Chat"...for only a minimal sanctioning fee.

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. Yeah, it's been a little weird today. Is it high tide or full moon or something?

John (Phoenix)

Derek has an awesome life if your 2 or 3 tweets about baseball are hampering it. Wow.

Mightytitan (New York, NY)

Dan do you have a facebook page?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Yes, but it is not for boxing stuff. It is strictly personal for my family and closest friends.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

Emmanuel Stewart is quoted as saying this will be Vitali's most dangerous opponent. Uhm.....pardon me?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Manny musta took a whiff of some stong stuff.

Darren (Dallas,Tx)

dtm, any Sam Peter return to the ring updates?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

LOL. NO. And I wouldn't expect any for awhile.

Robert (Queens, NY)

Dan,How sad is it that Floyd Mayweather's past actions and words now make Roger Mayweather look like the intelligent one in the family.

Chris (Vancouver BC)

I was watching a canadian boxing card with Russ Anber speaking. He mentioned the divisional ratings from the sanctioning bodies and said," spare yourself the time and headaches and just look at Dan Rafael's on espn if you want legit rankings."

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Russ is the man.

Michael (Germany)

Do you think Maidana will be too much for Kahn considering he was dropped by Prescott?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Not at all. I think Khan will be much more prepared.

Mightytitan (New York, NY)

Dan who will be the Ring champs @ 140 by the year 2012

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Who will be the junior flyweight champ in 2026?

Nick (NY)

Does Showtime verify the injuries the boxers are citing with their own independent certified doctors? How does showtime know if kessler/dirrell are telling the truth or if they just want to get out of the tournament. Given they put sooo much time into the tournament I think they should protect themselves from people just citing injuries and delaying their scheduled fights or people just pulling out completely.

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I have asked Showtime if they have gotten verification on the injury. I have asked if they received a doctor's note as well as have Dirrell go thru their own exam. Showtime has not answered me yet.

Edju (Salisbury, MA)

Who will be the junior flyweight champ in 2026? Who knows, but David Haye is trying to line up a fight with whoever it is.

robb (amherst, ma)

"who will be the junior flyweight champ in 2026?" one of echols' kids. duh.

Roy (Reno)

Call me crazy but I am getting excited for Pac-Margs 24/7

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Good, you go do that.

John (Phoenix)

Dan, do you ever get an 'atta boy' from the bosses from taking a sport that most people see as dead and turning it into one of ESPN.com's most viewed pages? Well if not, 'atta boy!

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

LOL. Thanks, but I have no idea where it ranks on ESPN.com's page views.

Nate (Lakewood,Co)

Wow, even Gene Simmons follows the King Freak! Can you reccommend some people to follow? I mean the REAL boxing people! No imposters!

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

If Gene follows me that is news to me.

JD (NYC)

Dan---u think there will be a large % of boxing HOF voters who will make an example of convicted felon Tyson and pass on his 1st year of eligibility?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

I doubt it. Tyson is a slam dunk.

Shane (Portland, OR)

Whats ur favorite Tyson moment?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Probably the day I hung out at his old house in Vegas and he entertained a handful of reporters and had a debate with Michael Katz about the best way to roll a joint. Either that or being with him at the gym for his final training session before the McBride fight and the interview that we did before that session.

Steve (NYC)

Why was Timir Ibragimov considered to fight Klitschko? He has been at least active with decnet foes this year.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

You're kidding right?

Charles (Inkster,MI)

Dan rolled up with Tyson...What a life you have man!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

For the record: I did not.

Steven (NYC)

Dan, you mentioned earlier inthe week you were getting ready to interview Vitali but i didn't see a story/recap, etc. Did he have anything interesting to say?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

The interview was postponed because he is training in the mountains and the service was bad. It's been rescheduled and I am supposed to talk to him (he's in Austria's mountains training) later this afternoon. Just got an email rescheduling.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

We'll talk about his upcoming fight with Briggs. What do you Freaks want to know?

J in FLA (Cocoa, FL)

Oleydong Sithsamerchai - Just wanted to see his name in the chat.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

And there ya go. Maybe you want to come over and watch some DVDs from Thailand of his fights?

Jose Sulaiman (Mexico)

The Glorious WBC has decided to name David "Hayemaker" Haye our Interim Hide-and-go-Seek World Champion, while our Super Champion remains Winky Wright. A match between these two has been mandated.

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

For a small sanctiong fee, of course.

John (Phoenix)

And the best way to roll a joint is.........Dan, you cant leave out Tyson joint analysis.

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I don't remember the outcome of that debate.

Joel (Queens, Ny)

When does Vitali plan on retiring?? Ask him that

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I have heard reporters ask fighters this question so many times and I think it's probably the dumbest question ever.

robb (amherst, ma)

"dumbest question ever" you make it sound like fighters aren't trustworthy when talking about retirement!

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I just think it's pointless because most guys have no idea. And even if they answer it, it's unlikely they will stick with it. So it's just stupid.

Leo (Cuidad de Mexico)

Rafa Marquez's car door vs shower door....who wins??

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Marquez's car door.

darryl p (indianapolis)

ortiz vs judah in 2011?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

Not out of the question. I'd like to see that one.

chris (philly)

how are expenses leading up to a fight handled? example, in pac's last fight he chartered a plan to fly his team down to dallas, etc. Are a fighters training expenses taken directly from the fighters purse or does the promoter cover it on top of the purse?

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

It comes out of the budget for expenses for the whole show.

Rob (Brooklyn,NY)

Do you think Kostyzu makes it into the hall of fame on the first ballot of votes?

Ramon (Maryland)

"But he's a boxing Jedi Master and knows how to win." Great analogy on B-hop dan. Obi Wan in the flesh.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

I sometimes expect BHop to pull out a light saber mid-fight.

Greg P (Staten Island,NY)

Dan, I asked you last week how the Boxing HOF was and you said best time to go would be during the enshrinement ceremony. Is it me or does this possible class w/Tyson,Chavez and Tszyu seem like its going to bring out alot of the stars and make this a MUST trip to Canastota?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

The 2011 induction weekend will be crazy!

John (NJ)

Dan...how did Guillermo Jones look last week after the layoff. I only ask cuz the cruisers are suddenly a very fun division.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

He looked pretty good considering it was 2-year layoff. He looked a bit out of shape, but he handled Brudov faily easily. He opened a really bad cut that was a bit of a mess and ultimately caused the ref to stop the fight.

Mario Mungia (Corpus Christi, Texas)

Dan, can I buy you a drink after or during the Pacquiao fight? You'll get to meet 4 boxing freaks that worship you and as an aspiring freelancer and English major maybe I can assist in the weekend scorecard?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

Settle down, Freak.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Valuev's poop...sorry, it just hadn't been addressed yet and I was getting antsy to get it out of the way. Let's move on.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Happy now?

Ryan (Youngstown)

Where does Concepcion's 1st round TKO last week rank on your early list of 2010 KOTY candidates?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

It doesn't. It was not a spectaculr knockout. He dropped him three times, but nothing overwhelming. Good performance, dont' get mne wrong, but not KO of the year material at all. Just a normal TKO.

Tom E (Jersey City, NJ)

Dan, can I come to your house and stare in the windows after dark? Can I sift through your garbage and read your mail?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

No, but I'll be sure to call the cops.

Alex (Lancs UK)

KO of the year - KO of Enzo Macc (unfortunately)?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Certainly a candidate.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

I caught a replay of that showtime card from last weekend, some fantastic KO's. Who do you think had the most impressive performance? Archie Ray looked good!

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Both winners, Marquez and Tim Coleman, had very strong performances.

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

More breaking news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (1:50 PM)

I have been informed that David Lemieux's fight with Hector Camacho Jr. is now signed, sealed and delivered. Should be formally announced next week.

Scott (Bloomington, MN)

Just got my Marquez v Katsidis tickets, can't wait. First Vegas fight. Any tips on the best place to find other boxing fans at the MGM that weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

Sweet. There are always fight fans hanging at the Rouge Lounge and by the bar near the front desk.

Gez (UK )

Perhaps a bit early but any frontrunners for your Prospect of the Year?

Ron McKenzie (Cincinnati)

Slow down. You're tweeting and chatting at the same time. My boss thinks I'm working!

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Keep up brother.

John (NJ)

Dano---any date for this Solis-Austin eliminator? That would be Vitali's next dance partner, eh?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

No date yet. I know the Solis side wants to get it done in November, but I have my doubts.

James (Lexington)

Do you have to purchase tickets for the HOF ceremony?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

I dot believe so. If you want to tour the museum there is a fee, but the actual inductions are free -- I'm pretty sure of that.

Bert (Minneapolis)

When you get the Bat E-mail is it just sent to you, or are other boxing people CC'd? Can you get my email added to the list?!?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

LOL. Depends. Sometimes I receive press releases that go out to everyone. Often times it's just to me. The Bat Email about the Lemieux fight was just to me.

Eric P (Saratoga Springs)

How does Ray Austin keep getting title shots and eliminators?

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Has funny pictures of the President for Life of the wretched WBC?

Kevin (CT)

How about a freaks bbq next year in Danastota????

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Nice -- Danastota!!

Tom (Reading, United Kingdom)

Dan how often do you speak to big name promoters based outside North America like Frank Warren and Saureland?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

I am in touch with many of them on a regular basis.

Joel (Queens, Ny)

I would like to see Camacho Jr vs Chavez Jr just for history

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

I would rather watch soccer. Well, not really, but you get the idea.

gary (Albany)

Dan what was the final outcome on the whole Gloves situation with Tavoris Cloud in his fight with Johnson?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

It is still going through the process.

Mark (Brooksville, Fla.)

Dan, Out of curiousity how did Canastota end up being chosen as the site for the Boxing Hall of Fame?

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

It's the hometown of the great Carmen Basilio and folks there started it.

Gil (NYC)

Dan, Can you talk to GBP about putting small photos of Alvarez and N'Dou on the fight poster with a large pic of Alvarez's lady in the middle ... She's a great reason to tune in

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

I'll see what I can do.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Dan, do Gary Shaw and Lou Dibella get along?

Dan Rafael
  (2:00 PM)

Yes, generally, they do.

Slick Money (NY)

Dan, I know Shane is a pro but wouldnt it be a conflict of interest if he fights Canelo? Why would he try to beat the company's next big star?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Not at all. Shane fought Mora, who is a GB guy. It is what it is. And, by the way, the fight is an idea the Alvarez camp has. There's nothing more to it than that at this time.

brian (paradise)

David Haye is trying lure Gerry Cooney out of retirement or maybe Bert Cooper or Michael Dokes

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Why such tough opponents?

brad (madison)

Ask Vitali if he's going to let Briggs use his inhaler in between rounds to even things out..

Gary (RI)

Do you consider Troy Ross the #1 cruiser?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

Do you ever look at the rankings I update every week?

butch (from the cape)

Dan I was watching a replay of one of the Peter-Toney fights and I noticed you were one of the guys on press row that they showed scorecards of. I would imagine there is a number of press people ringside how do they decide who to pick? Has your scorecard ever come under great scrunity from the announcers?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

They ask three guys there. I was asked that night and did it. I've done it a few times, but the best one was doing it for Corrales-Castillo 1, which turned out to maybe be the best fight ever. Honestly, until you brought it up, I had not remembered doing it for Peter-Toney 2. What I remember most about that night was meeting Anna Nicole Smith before the fight.

Craig (UK)

Solve the riddle... Ricky Hatton stares into a mirror, you are also in that particular room at a 45 degree angle to the mirror. How many Ricky Hattons do you see?

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

I was under the impression there would be no math involved.

Justin (Seattle)

I understand that having both arms tied behind their backs was a stipulation for Haye to fight either of the brothers. Can you check with Vitali on that?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

I'll ask.

JB (Toronto)

Was Anna still in peak condition back then or had she begun her rapid descent into bolivion?

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

She was as high as a kite.

John (NJ)

Dan...buy/sell Haye invoking the "Chagaev mandatory next" excuse right after he's done with Audley.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

Buy. But I sorta dounbt Chagaev will get licensed in England because of the hepatitis issues he has. They have stronger rules in the UK than Germany.

Donald (Miami)

Buy or Sell? De La Hoya-Alvarez for Cinco de Mayo weekend 2011

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Sell. Not happening.

Derek (Bay Area)

I just caught up on Quick Hits and everything else you wrote for the week. HBO is paying $1.25 million for the Berto fight? I just threw up in my mouth a little.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

I threw up a lot.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

More news from the Bat Email.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Stetement from Andre Ward on Andre Dirrell situation: "It's very unfortunate to hear about Andre Dirrell's situation. It's never a goodthing for a fight not to be able to work, especially for a neurological reason. I pray for his health and that he is able to return to the ring as soon as possible."

Dustin (Wichita, KS)

Wow... Ward gave a classy answer? Shocking.

Andrew Baker (Falls Church)

"Wow... Ward gave a classy answer? Shocking." Was that sarcasm?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Yes, because Ward is a classy guy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

OK, Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Hope you check out the notes and all the other stuff posted this week. Enjoy your weekend and GO YANKS! Talk to you next week.
