It's another huge week in college football led by Alabama-USC. Let's start.
Christian Ballard in the 1st round?
He just moved into my top 5 DT's on the Big Board. The thing with him is that he's been very very productive. He's quick and works hard. Adrian Clayborn has been quick up until Saturday night against Penn State. Ballard is a real tough, blue collard kid that gives you all he has every time out on the field. The more you watch him, the more you like him.
Where do you see MSU linebacker Greg Jones going? Also, what do you feel about Allen bailey right now?
Right now, I'd say second or third round. Allen Bailey I have as a mid first rounder.
Hey Mel, What do you think of Ryan Torain?...Where did you have him rated in the draft?
He did a good job at ASU and he's a service backup type of backup. He's not a front line guy.
next year would Terrelle Pryor and/or Denard Robinsonbe be a 1st round quaterback or a 1st round WR/RB
I think Pryor is evolving into a QB prospect. Right now, he's my 5th rated junior QB. I see Robinson as an Antwan Randall-El type of player in the league. And with the wildcat now, Robinson can creatively get his hands on the ball a lot in the NFL. It's still to early to tell with these two.
real concerned with the colts d,any chance this unit can improve?
They have the components up front. The problem is they have Sanders and Bullet hurt. They only gave up 13 points to Denver and 14 points to the Giants. I want to see how they play against Kansas City at home. This is a tam that the Colts can bounce back but Manning and the offense have to kick it into high gear. They face good offensive teams in Houston, New England, San Diego and Dallas all in November and early December.
Mel, is the Heisman Denard Robinson's to lose? And is he better than VInce Young?
I wouldn't compare him to Vince. He has a strong arm and he can throw the football. Vince has the NFL size of a QB and Denard has the size of a WR. We looked at Vince as a NFL QB while he was in college but we don't look at Denard the same way. There is other whose names should be in the Heisman chat like LaMichael James, Mark Ingram, Kellen Moore and my pick Pryor of Ohio State.
Mel, great work as always. I've been to every BC game this year and Costanzo is struggling. How far has he fallen?
He's fallen. I dropped him for the 10th spot to the 15th spot. The problem this year is there are no senior OT. This isn't going to be a good year for OT. Last year we had four very highly regarded OT and I don't think we come close this season.
Where do you predict Indiana QB Ben Chappell to be drafted next yr?
Chappell plays in a pistol offense. He has excellent receivers to throw. He's come a log way in his skills as a colligate QB. They have a tough game this week with Ohio State and I look forward to see what their offense can do against Ohio Stat's defense. I see him a late rounder of an undrafed free agent.
Mel, did we see the "real" Jake Locker against SC or he is closer to the one who combusted against Nebraska? Thanks-
That's why you have to let the season play out. I dropped him from one to four ager the SC game and he's stayed there. He has big games Oct. Stanford at Washington he'll be on the same field as Luck. We'll see how he matches up with the No. 1 player on my Big Board. SC defense is a far cry from Nebraska's defense and he was able to do some things to exploit SC's defense.
My Dawgs may not be good this year, but at least i get the chance to watch A.J. Green for the rest of the year now. Do you see him raising his stock even more over the rest of the season? The one handed catch against Colorado was amazig
I think it's going to be hard to raise it farther than it is and right now he's NO.3. He's the best overall receiver in the draft right now and that includes juniors and seniors. Any game they play for the rest of the season, he's going to be the best player on the field. I see him as an early first round draft choice.
Which College Football Quarterback that is playing right now in College do you think will be a perfect fit for the Buffalo Bills?
I'd go with Andrew Luck. He has the arm, the size, and he's an athlete. I think he'll be the first QB taken in the draft. Buffalo hasn't had a big name QB since Jim Kelly so he has to be in the discussion.
Who is going to be the Tom Brady of this years draft?
A late round pick that surprises everybody. I have to say Pat Devlin, Nathan Enderle and we have to see how far Christian Ponder falls.
Colin Kapernick draft chances?
He's going to put up great numbers at the college level in that pistol offense. They host Boise State the day after Thanksgiving. That's a huge game for them. He'll have the chance to showcase his skills against a Boise State team that should still be undefeated. He's a tough athletic kid and we have to see how his QB skill will translate to being an NFL QB.
Good afternoon, Mel. Where would you rate BSU's Pettis and Young?
With Young's return skills, he's around a 5th round guy. With Pettis receiving skills, he's around a sixth round guy.
Who wins the battle this week, Drake Nevis or Mike Pouncey?
That's gong to be a great battle. Nevis has had a great year and he will provide a challenge for Pouncey. As far as who wins the battle, that's tough. I think they will get the best of each other at times. This is one of the top one-on-one matchups this week in college football. Both have early round grades.
Mel, will you please teach the Bears front office how to evaluate talent and who to draft? They need you Mel! We as their fans need you!
I think this past draft they came up with some guys who have a chance. They have Major Wright and DJ Moore but I was very surprised that they let Dan LeFevour go. They only drafted five players in last year's draft and in the past,They have drafted some guys who have done well for them. You can't just remember just the bad, they drafter Johnny Knox, Greg Olsen, Matt Forte and others that have played well for them.
With the Randy Moss trade. What do you see NE doing in the first 3 rounds? Especially with that Vikings pick?
The great thing about NE is that they have eight picks in the first for rounds. They can move up or down and pretty much do what they want to get players. This past April, they had six picks in the first four rounds. Right now, Aaron Hernandez has been one of the steals of the draft. We have to wait and see how the young guys on defense play. How the o-line comes together. They don't have a big name running back. All these things will go al long way in determining what they do with these early round picks.
I now Christian Ponder has had some O line problems, but has his stocked dropped this year? Where do you have him?
Ponder is one of those QB's that can go third or fourth round or maybe drop to the fifth or six round. He doesn't have a great arm but he has the size, smarts and athletic ability. He's my second highest rated senior QB behind Jake Locker. James Rogers is rated as a third to fifth rounder.
What is Jerrod Johnson's weak link? Is it his release/low ball velocity? Where in the draft does he project?
He's just inconsistent and that's why I think his stock is dropping. He's a later round possibly in my opinion.
Do you see Cameron Newton as a potential draft pick after this year or does he need another year of college ball?
He's played extremely well. He has the size and a nice arm. When looking at him, you have to think how he is going to play on the big stage. Right now, he looks impressive but he still has some real good evaluation games coming up. He only has five games under his belt at Auburn and it's a little too early to talk about if he should leave early or not.
what do see nebraska record at the end of the year
I see them going 12-0 and playing Oklahoma for the Big XII Championship.
Is La Michael James a pro prospect or his he destined to be "just" a great college RB?
He defiantly a pro, no question about it. He's an extremely talented football player as a third year sophomore. He had a career high 257 rushing years against Stanford. For a kid that's only 5'8 and 185, he's runs hard. He shocks defends with his power. I wish we has already a refined standout in the return game.
Will McElroy get drafted?
He's a later round possibility.
Thoughts on Jordan Todman? Is he big enough to play in the NFL?
He's a talented kid coming off a great game with past week. He can be a good change of pace-situational guy in the league. He's not going to give you 20-25 carries a game. Right now, he's my fifth highest rated junior running back. With the role he's going to have in the NFL, size doesn't matter.
Mel, where do you have Akeem Ayers rated on your big board?
He's No. 11 on my Big Board. In my opinion, he's the best OLB in the country right now. Two big games for UCLA coming up, at Cal and at Oregon.
We've had college football games every night his week. Troy- Middle Tennessee State on Tuesday, UAB-Central Florida tonight, Nebraska-Kansas State tomorrow and a couple of games Friday night. Enjoy the games this week and I'll be back to chat with you next Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET.
