Hey guys,I'm here, let's get started.
What have you heard about the injuries for both FSU (e.g., Joyner, Jones, Mister) and Miami (e.g., Harris, Miller)? Who is in, who is out for Saturday?
Official injury reports aren't released until Thursday, but I know Jacory Harris is fine and Mister Alexander will play.
Hey HD, now that we are about 1/4 way. I have been watching GT play every game. The offense is doing somewhat ok. But the defense looks confused and unorganized. Is this the players fault or does this fall on Al Groh?
It's a new scheme. A learning curve was expected, and they're going through growing pains. It's too soon to give Groh's defense a pass or fail.
What do you make of the supposed injury to Jacory Harris' non-throwing shoulder?
It's not as bad as everyone is making it out to be. Yeah, he got "nicked" at Pitt. Is it worse than anyone is letting on? Maybe. But it's not bad enough to keep him off the field.
Heather, with the big game coming up on Saturday night, it's been pretty well-documented that the FSU defense has begun to step up. With this improvement, do you think that the Noles' secondary will be able to capitalize on Jacory Harris' sometimes sub-par decision-making, and if so, will this be a make-or-break component to the game?
Turnovers are always a make or break component. Every team that watches film will be looking for their chance to make the same kind of plays.
So with Danny O'Brien playing so well and Robinson injured, do we have another Jordan Steffy/Chris Turner on our hands?
I actually Tweeted that same thought, I want to say a week ago. Ralph had said that Jordan Steffy wouldn't lose his job because he was injured but that sure seemed like what happened. Very similar situation.
How do you think Jimbo will fare in his first rivalry game?
You know it's also his birthday? I expect it to be another fourth-quarter game. It's so tough to predict, but as mentioned before, I think turnovers will be the deciding factor.
Any chance UNC makes a comeback and is able to win the ACC?
UNC kind of IS making a comeback -- just against nonconference opponents. I think the Tar Heels can beat Clemson this weekend, but the road trips to Miami and FSU will knock them out of the race.
Should VT rest R Williams another week (even if he's cleared to play this week) to be ready for ACC games coming up or warm up against Central Michigan and risk re-injuring the hamstring?
Yes. No need for him to play this week.
So what is up with Georgia Tech? Are people figuring out "the system"?, Are the players not executing? or do they just not have the talent?
Lack of execution. Missing the NFL talent from last year. Lack of focus. I'd say it's a seven or eight-win team this year.
We are always talking JH12's interceptions, aren't the penalties on the O-line hurting just as much?
No doubt. What was it, 12 penalties for over 100 yards last week? Randy Shannon said no excuse for that. He's right. Play disciplined.
Which conference is better, ACC or WAC?
According to ESPN's Stats & Info, the WAC, at least heading into this week (I think the updated chart comes out today). But I say the ACC is better. You've got Boise State and Nevada. Fresno State? None of those teams would go undefeated in the ACC.
If Kyle can play like he did against Auburn, you think the Tigers can beat UNC on the road?
Yeah, Kyle definitely struggled against Miami, especially in the first half, but it wasn't all on him. Miami's defense forced a few of those turnovers. Clemson's problem is it needs to find some wide receivers.
Enough about the Hokies, Tigers, Seminoles, and Hurricanes on this blog. Definitely enough about the Chokies. What do you think are the Terps chances of making it to the ACCCG? With a freshman QB who seems to be gaining poise and confidence (no turnovers on Saturday in a game where he didn't play his best), it seems if not this year, the Terps could and should be contenders in the league for years to come if they can continue to the build the offense line around him.
Maryland is in a great position to get to a bowl game this year, but it hasn't exactly been putting together complete performances. They were trailing Duke, struggled in the first half against FIU and were manhandled against the only ranked competition they've played.
Georgia Tech struggled to beat a Wake team that was using a WR at QB because of injuries. Could this spell trouble for Tech as the season really starts to get difficult in a few weeks?
Yes, but give the Deacs' defense credit. MUCH better in the past week or so.
HD, who needs Saturday's game more to stay out of the 0-2 conference hole, the Heels or the Tigers?
Interesting question. I'd say North Carolina. They've got enough problems as it is.
Do you think Dabo's change of starting WR to 2 Freshman and Sophomore will result in improvement?
I don't think the veteran guys left him much choice.
Who are your current offensive and defensive players of the year for the ACC?
Great question. I was trying to do a video on that and couldn't narrow it down. You still can't count out Russell Wilson, Christian Ponder, Leonard Hankerson, Sean Spence, Da'Quan Bowers. No clear cut frontrunner, that's for sure.
So close Hoosiers, so close. How about you assess Stoops' progress with the FSU defense thus far? Been pretty solid outside of the OU debacle.
I'm used to it, Matt, but the Steelers killed me, just killed me. Stoops got a helmet sticker from me last week. I think he's done a terrific job and has FSU D looking respectable again. FSU and Miami D are among the ACC's best this year.
HD, the ACC always produces great talent to the NFL every year. Who is the best player you have seen play so far this year?
You mean aside from Patrick Peterson?
what should I do in order to get some wins. 2-2 is not where I wanted to be.
Get Chase Rettig healthy. Tear into your offensive line.
Best QB in the ACC: Harris, Ponder, Taylor, or Wilson?
They've all had their problems this year, tough call. Don't forget about Nesbitt. Nesbitt and Tyrod might be the two best in the clutch.
Sat. night will likely come down to the end as it always does. Bosher or Hopkins? who would you rather have for the GW FG?
I'll go with Bosher. Did you know he goes spear fishing?
I know last years rivalry game was a huge disappointment, but GT should be able to take care of the hapless Dawgs this year, right? THWG (1-4)
If Colorado did, I don't see why Georgia Tech can't. What is that, four straight losses?
Heather, Miami is reporting that there are less than 2000 tickets left for the big game on Saturday. Miami fans clearly think this is a bigger game than usual. Do you see this as the biggest game in Randy Shannon's tenure as head coach?
Hadn't thought of it like that, but now that you mention it, it probably is. He said the win at Clemson was one of the biggest for the program since he's been there. With each win, the next game only gets bigger.
You did not include Yates in your QB's...I thought he was having a great year so far..
You're right, he is. Count him in.
HD, At the start of the season you predicted the Canes to loose this week any chance your opinion may have changed since then?
I honestly haven't decided on this one yet. Picks are Thursday, so I've got some time. Man, you guys don't forget a thing, do you?
Big Terps fan, but let's be honest. We will be lucky to go 6-6 this year. Our offense leaves much to be desired.
Hey, after last year, 6-6 is something to be proud of.
After VT progress on the road in the last two weekends and some very winable games coming up what is your current prediction for VT in the UNC, GT, Miami stretch? Hokies in the ACCCG again?
I'm sticking with what I said this summer, that the VT-Miami game will determine the Coastal Division winner.
Heather- Why does the SEC continue to get so much love when they clearly are a 1 team conference? Miami and Clemson would finish 1-2 in the SEC East this year. The ENTIRE SEC East lost last week. And this conference lost to Jacksonville State. A lot of over-rated teams outside of Alabama!
I'd ask Chris Low, but he's too busy picking Bama for the next few weeks to boost his prediction percentage ...
Is the Hokies stretch GT, @UNC, @UM still going to be their downfall, or is that stretch of games not as bad as predicted earlier in the year?
It's not as bad. Georgia Tech is beatable. North Carolina, who knows who might be back and who might be missing still at that point. It's the road trip to Miami that I think will be their downfall. Regardless, I still don't think the Hokies can escape that stretch unbeaten.
Does it not make sense to go ahead and start Boyd in Clemson for the rest of the season? Parker has not led the Tigers to a 4-0 or 3-1 start and they could go ahead and get Boyd the experience he needs to potentially become and immediate dominate threat next year. Especially since Parker is more than likely headed to the MLB next year.
No, it doesn't make sense. You've got a veteran QB. Why start from scratch right now and go through freshman mistakes when you're still in the mix?
Why's it so difficult for the sports reporting world to recognize that the ACC is still a powerhouse. With constant references to the ACC being a lesser conference than the Big East and even MountainWest, someone should probably lose a job over it. Wisconsin ranked above FSU? Nevada? Really?
The ACC has two ranked teams. Virginia Tech lost to James Madison. I can't remember a nonconference marquee win for the ACC this year. And if I remember correctly, the ACC lost to Iowa and Wisconsin in bowl games last year. Kind of tough to make an arguement.
Is butch davis the head coach next year?
Not if I'm the AD.
The Terps have beat Clemson the last 2 times they've had noon games in Clemson. Do you think the Terps have a chance when Oct. 16 comes around?
For some reason Maryland has had the Tigers' number. So yeah, they've got a chance, but Clemson is a better team.
I know the ACC hasn't done itself any favors trying to earn respect on the national stage but isn't the national media doing it a dissservice as well? Miami moved up from #16 to #13 after a solid win against Clemson. Yet somehow Arkansas managed a bigger move (#15 to #11) during their bye week this past week. Not to mention Miami dropped from #17 to #19 during their bye a couple weeks ago. What gives? Do people just not pay attention to the games?
You also have to realize that teams drop out of the rankings, and sometimes that equates an automatic promotion. Plus, a lot of people (myself included) look at the previous week's rankings and go off of that instead of starting from scratch each week.
If Darren Evans continues to rebound and put up numbers like last week, does that finally open up the Tech offense to the point where Taylor will have more time/more open targets and we get some consistent output like we did in the 2nd half last week?
You would think, right? But it also has to do with guys up front making their block. The offensive line graded out well against NC State.
Is Miami really the best team in Floirda? UF is clearly not as good as they were last year, but losing an game at Alabama (even if they were dominated) isn't any more shameful than losing at Ohio State.
Yeah, but look at HOW Florida lost. Four turnovers. They couldn't score. Miami at least scored.
Which QB would you rather go with this weekend? Ponder or Harris?
Dream team = Ponder and his o-line with Miami's defense.
Am I back?
Regardless of who wins the FSU Miami game. Don't you still think that both teams need to beat a top non conference team to be in the national title picture...like Florida
No doubt. FSU still has Florida. Miami has to win out. Either way, both still missed out on that opportunity.
How man games will Duke win this year
Any idea of how the Pack will fare the next few weeks after the depressing loss at home to VT? Will this become a pattern or will they fight harder?
Talked to Nate Irving today. He said they've moved on and they're a mature group.
Virginia - which team is the real one, the one that showed heart against USC or that got rolled by FSU?
The one that got rolled. Even Mike London will tell you they're "a work in progress." Besides, look at what's happened to USC.
Which ACC coach do you think is on the hot seat?
Butch Davis. Ralph Friedgen.
what is the best non-conference win the ACC will have this year?
The more the season unfolds, the more it looks like FSU can beat Florida, but I'm still not ready to go there yet.
Do you see Duke becoming a bowl team in the next three years?
Yes. They've got a lot of good, young players we're not seeing yet and the offense is inconsistent because of a new starting quarterback.
how many ACC teams make a bowl this year ?
Right now I'd say seven, but will take a closer look at that soon.
I can't believe Anthony Allen hasn't scored a touchdown yet.
Nor can I. Are you sure? He said he was "going crazy" on Twitter yesterday. Maybe that's why.
It seems like the UNC O-Line has stepped it up big time over the past year. I don't expect two 100 yd rushers against ACC competition (unlike the ECU game), but will be the UNC rushing game finish strong down the stretch?
Yeah, while it was a good performance last week, ECU's defense can't stop anybody. That being said, I think the Tar Heels will continue to be a strong running team.
More worrisome - Harris throwing two more picks at Clemson or Benjamin gaining 1 yard on four returns and three big special teams penalties?
The latter. But Tommy Streeter had never been in that situation before. Shannon said he learned from it. All of that is correctable, though.
How good can Sean Renfree be?
I honestly think he can be one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC by the time he's a senior.
Who do you think the Eagles should start at quarterback if Rettig isn't healthy?
Oh geez. I've got some eligibility left. I don't know, maybe try Shinskie again?
Who is most surprising and disappointing player in ACC this year?
Oh I don't know. These are tough questions to answer on the spot because I can never think of everyone fast enough. Maybe Kris Burd at Virginia for surprising? Probably Marvin Austin for most disappointing?
Any chance Coach Cutcliffe is on the hotseat?
NO! And no way should he be!
Is there a team in the ACC that is anywhere close to Miami in terms of all around talent?
With a solid chance of NC State heading into the FSU game at 6-1, does that match up decide the Atlantic Division?
Yes, and it should be a great Thursday night game. It was last year, too.
Why why why do the Canes constantly throw deep to Benjamin? With his speed why not dump a 5 yard slant and let him use his elusiveness?
I'm telling you, Whipple is a high-risk, high-reward play-caller. Jacory has ice in his veins. He'll get right back in there and go for the home run. I think Whipple backed off a bit, though, at Pitt.
have you picked up a copy of bobby bowdens new book?
Yes, finished it on the plane home from Clemson this past Saturday. It made me laugh. Almost made me cry. Felt like I was sitting in Bowden's living room listening to him talk.
Do you think it's possible, even likely for 2 ACC teams to play in BCS bowls. For example, let's say that whoever wins the FSU-Miami game wins out, only to lose in the ACCCG.
It's definitely possible, but considering it hasn't happened, I'll believe it when I see it. But whoever loses the ACCCG, if it's one of those teams, would have two losses and it wouldn't happen. I think I'm reading your question right.
Jayron Hosley- best corner in the ACC?
He certainly was last weekend.
Brandon Harris is way better than Hosley
He was outstanding on that fourth-and-one at Clemson. Don't forget Hosley is a soph though (I think).
Oh my God Heather where does BC go from here??
lol ... to church?
How good is Nate Irving?
He's a great player, a great leader and a great story. He's having a heck of a season for missing last year.
Will Ryan Williams leave early for the NFL or stay one more year in Blacksburg?
It depends on a ton of things. Bottom line, if he's a first-round pick Billy Hite will be the first one pushing him out the door.
Could you please keep picking VT to lose.
I could, but they're playing Central Michigan this week.
Do we finally see Storm Johnson this week?
He has been playing on special teams.
If FSU wins this weekend, what do you think the chances are of them running the table on the rest of their season?
I think they're pretty good, but you really can't look past that road trip to Raleigh, and Florida still has the upper hand until proven otherwise.
HD, after a loss to vt, what are your thought on ncstate? Being a long time ncsu fan im used to seeing great runs followed by disappointing losses. Do you think ncsu will cont their stellar season with wilson at qb
I see NC State rebounding with back-to-back wins heading into that FSU game.
Will UVA ever get to a ACC championship game under Mike London
I don't see why not, but he needs a few recruiting classes to get there.
Alright guys, my time is up. Thanks for joining me today. See you next week!
