Live from NASCAR's Research and Development Center in lovely Concord, N.C. for the second straight week. No word on the appeal outcome yet, but Richard Childress was happier with today's process than last week's. Fire away.
Let's play what if: If Dale Sr is still living name the 4 drivers at Childress and is GM Goodwrench on one of those cars?
First, Dale Sr. wouldn't be driving because he would be almost 60. Lineup could be what it is today. Bigger question is would Dale Earnhardt Jr. still be at DEI and that company would still be viable? Yes.
Let's say NASCAR doesn't institute the 4 car limit, who would have more cars in 2011 Roush or Hendrick and how many cars do they have?
Might be close. Hendrick definitely would have added a fifth car for Kahne. Not sure you would see six or seven car teams.
Terry, I disagree with you on your take about "have at it boys" going too far. Remember Reutimann and Rowdy's feud at Bristol? Then Rowdy spins out Reutimann again, if Kyle Busch doesn't want to get wrecked by a non chaser then he should race more carefully around them. plus "have at it boys" adds drama to a sport that hasn't had much of it in the previous four seasons
This isn't TB, but I disagree sa well. Busch got what he asked for. You can't differentiate between Chase and non-Chase drivers when having at it. It's a level playing field.
I saw that ESPN is looking into the ratings being bad for Chase races, I almost fell out of my chair! Look at the product, boring events, vanilla drivers and a boring title format that doesn't reward the best driver of the year at all! I bet NFL fans would get bored if every Super Bowl was at Lambeau Field! I DVR'ed the race, watch Reuti and Busch go at it and deleted it! And what is better, boring tracks getting 2nd events next season!
Hey, ratings are down in most sports.
I have SORT OF A CONSPRACY THEORY concerning Mark Martin. I think he feels cheated and was vocal about it and hendrick isnt putting as much emphasis on the 5 car.
NASCAR is all about conspiracy theories, isn't it? But I don't buy that one. That would be like Hendrick shooting himself in the foot. Doesn't make sense.
hi terry during the year theres been talk about Nascar's viewership declining and how they're looking for ways for it to raise again but do you think that its harder for the chase to gain more attention now with the NFL season under way and with the MLB postseason beginning this week?
You left out college football as well. Too much going on. NASCAR should shorten its season and end in early September.
What Race will Danica Patrick make her Sprint Cup Series Debut at?
Nothing has been said, but I'm going with Daytona 500 2011. Too much risk putting her in this season.
Should i trade chris johnson for adrian peterson
IF you can get Peterson go for it. I'm still sulking Vick was injured and cost me a win. Ironically, I broke a rib the day before he hurt his. Bad karma.
Espn is concerned with Chase ratings. I think the the coverage has a little to do with that as well. Not to take anything away from your colleagues who do a good job ,to me it just seems a little to "white collar" need a little more blue. JMO
I agree, it's not the coverage. There are too many other options on Sundays these days. If it wasn't for the man cave with two large TVS I'd have a tough call between NFL and races on weekends I'm not at the track. Be a lot of switching with the remote.
Good afternoon David. Are Johnson, Harvick, Hamlin and the Busch brothers still the cream of the crop with 3 Chase races down?
Don't discount Jeff Gordon. But yes.
David, everybody is playing the blame game...can't everyone just realize that when NASCAR failed to penalize driver 99 at Atlanta that this was what they were going to get? There is a time & place for retaliation, but these high speed tracks should warrant better judgement.
You're right, NASCAR painted itself into a box when it let Atlanta go unpunished.
hey newt!! ok so everyone is making a huge deal of kyle vs davied. they are saying that he shouldnt have hit a chase driver thats not right. but to me if you either wreck someone in the regular season or the chase its really the same thing. correct me if im wrong but if kyle wrecks ruity in the regular season that hurts his chances at making the chase and if he doesnt make the chase he gets no championship. if you wreck someone in the chase it hurts theyre chance at a title. samething right?
Can't argue with anything you say there.
whos your pick sunday?
David Reutimann....kidding. I'll go with Carl Edwards to end his drought, but JJ probably will win.
David, hope you are doing well today, beautiful weather here in central Florida, how's it in Charlotte? Also, any word on that 3rd RPM car yet? I hope Allgaier gets it, it would give Ford young drivers in Bayne and Allgaier.
Sunny but a little breezy and cool. No complaints though. As for third RPM car, it all depends on getting sponsorship, and the sponsor will have a say on which driver it is.
I'm not sure it is intentional by Nascar but the past couple of weeks have been great, and it's not all because of the chase it's the length of the races lately. 400 at Richmond, 300 at NH, 400 at Kansas and 400 at Fontana next week. Without the extra 100 miles races are more urgent and they have ended at appropriate times.
Been saying that for a while. The races also might not coincide with the end of the early NFL games.
Out of all the non-chasers that would give payback (hence your article at start of Chase) Reutimann to Kyle Busch wasn't the one I was expecting
Me either. Sure there is more to come though.
David, diehard jeff gordon fan here for 15 years and i know youve picked jeff to win multiple weeks and even picked him to win the championship do you still think he will win a race and if so where, and does he still have a shot at the cup??
I do and I do. And no we are not married now.
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON HI DAVID WHO YOUHAVE FOR FONTANA SUNDAY
Second question David, who is sponsoring Harvick for the other 16 races? I read somewhere about 7-eleven or Jimmy John's.
TBA still. They're working on it.
Hey Newt, since Waltrip is running his mouth about what Reuitman did to Rowdy, I was wonderwing what Coach and JD had to say about it and what about Lee White at TRD?
Not much they can say. Payback is apparently legal these days so the best thing they can say is don't do anything to warrant payback.
I gotto ask. Is it fair for Kyle to whine that the tower wouldn't do anything to Reut when he admitted he wrecked BK for a win? He fans also thought that was okay but now are whining about Reut.
It's pretty messed up thinking isn't it. You can't have it both ways.
David, your pick to win at California this weekend?
I've been picking Edwards, but for you I'll go with Biffle.
Do you think the Chasers will be more concerned with payback now. David R has made a statement by hitting back at Kyle. 43 cars in a race, not just 12.
They should have been concerned before now. Jeff Gordon has been playing nice the second half of the season because he knows what payback can cost you.
What happened with Clint Bowyers car on Sunday?
According to Richad Childress they were super loose and didn't get it adjusted until late.
How is it down there in Concord? Any pizza ordered?
No pizza. Passed out a few goji berries.
What's the chances of Jeff Gordon winning at Cali and putting the heat on his teammate a top the Chase?
Wouldn't surprise me since I've been picking him to win a race most of the year.
If Kyle is as great as the media and his fans portray him, then why does he keep hitting people and claiming it was just an accident. For someone that people claim to be so great, he sure does not drive like it.
To be fair, in this case it was an accident that he hit Reutimann. Reut was loose and KB just couldn't slow down to miss him.
Is Rowdy the first driver locked into the 2011 Chase since he said it would have been OK for Reuitman to have wrecked him in one of the first 26 2011 races?
Not following your logic here.
QUESTIONTO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.25 PM HI DAVID WHO Y0U HAVE FOR FONTANA
Guess Who??!! Biffle. Yes, the Biff shocked the world in Kansas and took home the checkered flag. I hope he continues to milk that car like a common dairy cow! Do you think he can continue a textbook move up the standings from his current 8 spot? Thanks and good luck!
He's pretty darn good at California, so maybe this is his run. He just walked by a few minutes ago and he was looking pretty confident.
What is everyone calling you Terry? David, how's the diet going? Who are your picks for this weekend?
Not sure. Guess cuase it's Tuesday and I do a lot more Wednesdays. As for the diet, the workout program has takena back seat to a broken rib suffered Saturday. As for the race, Edwards.
If Rowdy got what was coming to him then what about Harvick for what he did to Joey or Gordon for what he did to Truex and Sadler or Johnson for what he's done to Kurt or Newman for what he's done to everyone else?
Hey, you reap wha tyou sew. As I wrote at the start of the Chase those that had incidents during the regular season must be looking over their shoulders.
Why is it okay for Kyle to spin out Brad at Bristol in Nationwide when Brad is running for the championship. but Kyle has a huge problem with David for spinning him out? Holy hypocrisy!!!!!!!
I'm with you.
geez newt everybody thinks your blount. ouch thats gotta hurt!!! just kidding terry!!!!
Yeah, I'm much better looking.
How long is it going to take for Rick Hendrick to wake up and realize that Lance and Dale have had like 50 races to show some signs of consistent improvement and it hasn't and won't happen!?
Uh, think he's aware. The problem is where do you turn. You can't keep switching crew chiefs.
Who do you think will be holding up the trophy at Homestead in November going by the chase standing today?
I know I picked Gordon at the start of this thing but it certainly smells like another JJ year.
do you see Slugger Labbe going with Paul Menard to RCR since they have been running good lately?
Pretty sure he's going with him.
Any word on Sadler's plans for 2011?
Other than some truck races for Harvick, nothing definitive.
David, how do you see the Roush cars performing the rest of the year (minus Dega because it is a crapshoot)?
Pretty solid. They're really good at California and Charlotte and Homestead.
Will anyone besides Kyle Busch win nationwide races this season?
Didn't Joey Logano just beat him?
Can you explain NASCAR's ridiculous points and money payouts per race. Don't understand how the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place drivers recieved the same points at Kansas and the 35th place driver receives more prize money than the 15th place driver.
Take too long to explain fully. All about bonus points for laps led, most laps led, etc. Google how NASCAR distributes money and points and you'll get it in full detail.
Do you think NASCAR will retailate against RCR for some of Childress comments his experts opinions?
Nah, they're pretty thick skinned.
Do you think Carl Edwards has what it takes to win the whole thing?
He's been really close twice, so no reason to think otherwise.
any new info on jeff gordons 2011 sponser? allstate?? walmart? hyvee? target? or something other than 4 ive heard?
Not Wal-Mart. Maybe All-Star. But no word.
David, what do you think of a fixed set of tracks (say 4 or 6) and then a rotating selection from the tracks raced during the season to fill out the rest of the chase races? Im not saying that JJ's dominance has come from the tracks selected for the chase but it definately helps the drive for five. Thanks
Four to six might be too many based on how far in advance tracks try to sell tickets, but I'd like to see at least two moved around each year.
if RCR loses the appeal, will this make others not even bother to appeal in the future if they are penalized?
many already are skeptical, but they'll still appeal if for anything to give the perception that they're innocent and fighting for it.
whos your pick in the nationwide race at california saturday?
how much heat do sponsors put on teams when their rival's cars are consistently outperforming theirs? I have to believe the 20 & 6 sponsors can't be too happy seeing the 48
Believe Home Depot is good with Logano, but I know UPS wants separation from David Ragan. And UPS likes the way David Ragan represents them off the track, but still believe they'll move to Kahne in 2012. The pressure comes when the driver under performs and doesn't represent or connect with buyers well.
With Tissot announed that Danica will do chicagoland race next year what other tracks will Danica race next year in the nationwide series?
She's still ironing out the details, but it'll be the same number this year with maybe a few different venues.
david i know this isnt racing related but who who rooting for in the mlb playoffs??
I've always liked the Braves, although doesn't look good for a run to the World Series.
Hey David whats up? Why does Kyle act like if your not in the chase you cant touch them? it doesnt make sense!
Just talking to Biffle about that. He says when he wasn't in the Chase he was careful driving around Chase drivers because he didn't want to cost them. He also says if somebody takes you out it's fair game to pay back whether it's a Chaser or not.
I like Biffle in California this weekend too! He seems to have things on track - I hope he can go to the slate with power and bring home another checkered flag! As far as Kyle's whining...real classy, JK, real classy! Let's keep it fun! Smile.
David, what was more ugly this past Sunday: How Jeff Burton and Kurt Busch faded at the end, or the performance of the Chicago Bears' offensive line?
Tough call. If I were the Bears' QB I would say the line.
Newt, do you know (or ask) Harvick if he's ever played speed golf?
I don't know the answer, but I'll ask next time I see him.
this week ive been covering this feud alot with espn articles, chats , message boards and on nascar.com. alot of people are saying they would start watching nascar again if only the 12 chasers raced. what is your take on that? i think thats dumb>
You mean 12 cars and not 43? That would be dumb.
Barring a crash involving all other chasers at Dega, for all intents and purposes, is Clint eliminated from the chase?
Pretty much. Shame.
On whom or what do you place the blame for Jeff Gordon's tendency to start a race strong and then fade after the midpoint? Or for his tendency to start strong, fade, and then regain the handling on the car too late? Is it the crew chief making the wrong adjustments, Gordon not driving as well as he could, or what?
Probably a combination of several things, but that he's been there at the end more than not I'd say he's ahead of the game.
what do you think about making the 12 count down drivers automatically qualify 1-12 and everyone else qualifies for 13 to infinity? i think it would shake thinks up a bit. people racing harder from the rear and up front drivers wouldn't want to fall back into no mans land and risk wrecking. your thoughts?
Don't really care for that one. Sorry.
How did Rowdy manage to beat Dale jr at Kansas with a wrecked race car while Jimme and Gordon got to the front?
Isn't Rowdy the best ever driver?
Can you ask Kyle if he wants cheese with his whine?
Nice. I wish I could but can't on the Mark Martin diet.
Personally I applaud Reuti for sticking up for all the non-Chasers. There is 31 other cars out there that deserve just as much respect. Just because Kyle is in the Chase doesn't mean he should be able to wreck the other guys out of his way and not expect any consequences. Your thoughts?
Agree with yours or the most part.
HE IS PICKING EDWARDS!!!!!!!!!
if im a driver who kyle wreked this season and heard his comment saying its ok to wrek him in the regular seson im getting together with every one else and we are picking races when we wreck kyle that way someone new wrecks him everyweek and when he whines we show his interview from kansas. good idea? i thought so
Like the way you think.
Do you think Tony Stewart is still in the hunt for the championship since he is 100 plus behind?
Sure. JJ was further back than this when he won in 2006, I believe it was.
do you think that Kahne would be in the 88 next year if anybody but Jr were driving it with the 88's team extremely poor finishes?
Rowdy said Reuitman could have paid him back in 2011 race 1-26 but not during the 2011 final 10 chase races, get it?
Yeah, but don't buy it.
With JJ atop the points standings, do the chase tracks need a shakeup? A rotating schedule or random draws at the beginning of the season for a few races?
I like a rotating Chase a lot, but many tracks are reluctant because they believe the dates they have are best for them.
david do you think that kyle will continue in the truck series next year?
He'll be driving, but whether it's for himself or somebody else remains to be seen. If he can't get sponsorship then that series is in trouble.
A while back a couple of pit crews used to put cola down in their pit box. Has anyone ever tried to put something down in their pit box to make the tire stickier to give the car more grip?
Teams have been using cola and other substances for a long time to make the tire stickier. NASCAR did outlaw a few things this year I believe because environmentally it wasn't good.
Of the non chasers, who would you pick to win at California?
jamie McMurray or Montoya.
It was so nice to see Matt Kenseth drive somewhat competitively at Kansas. Do you think he has any shot of a win at Fontana?
It's one of his better tracks, so I would think he has a very good chance. There was a time when he owned that track.
which was funner covering the nfl or nascar????
Great stories in both. Like the travel schedule better in NFL, though. Two days instead of four and most of the time to large cities with nice hotels that aren't an hour from the stadium.
Do you think that maybe if Reuitman had the skills of Jimmie , Rowdy or Kurt that he wouldn't be causing so many wrecks? Maybe Reuitman isn't qualified to be racing in Sprint cup?
Sure this isn't Kyle Busch in disguise? Reutimann won at Chicago earlier this year and beat all these guys you mention. He definitely belongs in Cup.
Newton my man How much fun is it sitting outside the R&D Center waiting must be exhausting!
Glad I brought a chair for this one. Tough sitting here with broken ribs.
If its the tracks that have the problem with it, maybe NASCAR should just take control and tell them how it is.....if you don't like the week slot you got, they can skip that track and go somewhere else, not to say they would but pretty sure most track owners will give in?........and Jr. is really really over-rated people....just saying
how did u break your ribs
Ernie the dog undercut me on a jog Saturday morning. And with that health update I bid you farewell. Back to staking out the R&D center. Hearing a verdict is forthcoming. Thanks for all the questions. Talk to you next week.
