Good afternoon, everybody. Thanks for checking in. Big week for the Jets. Let's get to it.
How will the New York Jets will do with Santonio Holmes as their Wide Receiver?
They should do well, Chris. Personally, I think he's the best receiver on the team in terms of overall ability. He's a gamebreaker. I don't think you'll see him out there a ton on Monday night (maybe 30% to 50% of the snaps), but he'll definitely be in 3 WR packages.
What do u think of Kris Jenkins coming back next season?
I have to admit, I'm a little surprised. I thought he'd head off into the sunset; he certainly doesn't have anything more to prove. He's a wonderful player when healthy, but he seems determined to make it back. I wish him well. He'll have to restructure his contract if he wants to stay with the Jets.
What's the latest on whether Revis, and Ellis will be playing Monday Night? Am I right that the only two active players who played in the Monday Night Miracle are Ellis and Jayson Taylor?
Ellis is fine. From what I understand, Revis is practicing as we speak. Rex said the doctors have given clearance for Revis to play, but he said it's up to Revis. I sensed some hesitance from Revis when talking to him Wednesday, but that was two days ago. Things could've changed. After dissing Randy Moss the way he did, you'd think he'd be out there to back it up.
Hi Rich...if you will allow me, I have 2 questions......I know I sound crazy, but could there be a down side to Santonio being back? The offense is fantastic right now and I fear if they tinker with it, they might mess up the chemistry that was built. Your thoughts?...Second, I feel like this is the first time the D-Line (minus Jenkins) will have faced an elite RB in Peterson. How do you think they will respond to the challenge?...thanks!
Two good questions, Sal. You're right, the offense has a good mojo right now, but the only way Holmes' return disrupts the flow is if players get selfish. Obviously, there will be fewer touches for Edwards, Cotchery and perhaps Keller. Can their egos handle it? They say yes. We'll see. Yes, this is a huge challenge with Peterson, and they'l have to do it with 7 in the box. No way a safety is cheating down into the box with Randy Moss out there and Revis coming off an injury.
Yesterday, your colleague Ohm said that as a Jets fan I shouldn't boo Favre because he played hurt for us every week. That's exactly why I will boo him. I think Favre lets his ego and start streak get in the way of what's good for the team. When do you think Favre will pull a Cal Ripken and sit himself out? He's already worried about not being able to get Moss the ball.
I think Jets fans have a right to boo, but not because he played hurt. What did you want them to do, start Clemens? Boo him because he played lousy down the stretch and boo him because he never gave the impression that he was anything more than a hired gun. But don't boo him because he played hurt.
Rich, what do you expect the reaction to be for Favre on Monday night?
Hi Rich, there's a part of me that just keeps thinking its too good to be true, but the Jets are really playing well since the first game. Is it too soon to say that they are playing like an elite team right now ?
If I were you, Oz, I wouldn't get too involved in labeling them at this point in the season. OK, so let's say they're an elite team right now. Will that help them down the road? No. You want to be an elite team in February. That's when it matters. But, yes, they're playing very well.
Rich,What do you think about the Jets swinging a trade for Merriman? SD has made it clear for some time now that he is available and given all the off the field/on the field issues should make him a nice buy cheap option which the Jets are always interested in.
No shot. Merriman is a headache with bad knees. Plus, the Jets are finally healthy at OLB, with Pace coming back.
Do you think that the jets are rushing revis back to match up with moss.
Great question, Matt. After listening to Rex for a couple of days, yeah, it sounds like he really wants Revis to play. On Wednesday, Revis was in a day-to-day mode. I wrote this earlier in the week: I'd keep him down another week. But, hey, I'm not a doctor.
Rich Do you play AC on Moss at times? I would especially considering Revis doesn't need to run 40-50 yd fly patterns all night.
Hey, Ira. I'd be surprised if Revis is on Moss all night. That wouldn't be prudent. I'd keep Revis on one side of the field, like they did in Week 1. Or, I'd use Revis in nickel situations only. Cromartie can cover Moss; he did it in Week 2. Just cover Moss for 2 quarters and he will lose interest real fast if he's not getting the ball.
Is Adrian Peterson good enough to make the Jets defense miss tackles?
Does Rex Ryan love Mexican food? You bet.
do you think the jets are better off putting revis on moss and cromartie on harvin, or put cromartie and a safety on moss (it worked well last time and moss does not know the vikings system so well) and put revis on harvin?
Astute observations, Jeremy. I think that's a good way to go.
last time on mnf we got embarrased. i am sure the team wants to show the world that the jets are legit. how is the teams focus, swagger, & confidence leading up to this game?
To be honest with you, I don't sense anything different about this week than previous week, except for the fact that players are tired of answering Favre questions. But I do think that MNF embarrassment, as you called it, still is causing some agita and I think they want to redeem themselves.
Rich, What is the Jets biggest challenge on D this week, stopping Peterson or Favre-Moss?
Biggest challenge is Peterson. Crazy as it seems, he's flying under the radar because of all the other hype, but AP is averaging 130-yds per game. He is a stud. That said, the Jets' run defense has been very good, better than I anticipated. Pace's return will make it better because he's a better run defender than Taylor. Pace is a downhill LB and can seal the edge, Taylor is a lateral player, not as physical. If he's in the game, the Vikes will run at him.
With Favre getting the icepack treatment, how bad do you think his arm is?
I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, you'd have to be concerned if you're a Vikings fan. When a 41 yo QB needs an ice pack AFTER a bye week, it's trouble. But, with Favre, who really knows? He's a fierce competitor and will give it his best shot. Make no mistake, he really want to beat the Jets.
How -- if at all -- has your view of the team and its prospects changed over the first four games?
I thought they'd be 2-2 now, so clearly they have exceeded my expectations. The offense has come around faster than anybody (including the Jets) thought it would. The defense hasn't been totally on its game, but you had to expect some dropoff without Revis, Pace and Jenkins. Special teams has helped, too. The Jets are playing real good complementary football.
I will assume you know what I'm referring to: Will Goodell punish Favre or is he beyond reproach? Goodell has to address this soon, yes?
I have no idea what you're talking about....cough, cough.
do you think darrelle revis is losing his popularity with the jets fan base due to his holdout now his injury, and latest moss comments, when he is not even saying if he will play, every time he speaks it bothers me more and more, thanks keep up the good work rich i enjoy the reads and tweets
It's an interesting point, Dave. I think the fan base wants production. If Revis returns and plays like Revis, it'll be happy. If not, he will catch some flak -- and he deserves to catch it. Because of his stature, he has gotten off light from the media, including me. If Braylon Edwards staged a holdout and pulled a hammy, he'd be getting killed. Is there a double standard?
How does Revis look for Monday night?
Shari, if I had to bet, I'd say he plays. I'm reasonably confident of that.
Rich, is there any chance Vlad Ducasse plays this year barring injury? Do you think the Jets small school approach by taking Wilson and Vlad may have led to their most disappointing draft in recent years and will they learn from this?
No, I don't see Ducasse playing. Wilson is from Boise State, hardly a small school. Aren't they ranked highly? I'm not stunned by Vlad's slow start, but I am a little surprised by Wilson. It's a tough position for a rookie, but I don't like what I see at times. He doesn't have a natural feel for ball awareness, and that's something you can't teach. Outstanding physical skills, yes, but I wonder about his natural instincts.
How is this years offensive line doing compared to last years?
The OL has played very well the last two weeks, especially in terms of pass pro. In fact, Schottenheimer remarked yesterday that the pass pro against the Bills may have been the best in years. OTs Ferguson and Woody have stepped up after sluggish starts. But they'll have their hands full this week. The Vikings may have the best front 4 in the league. Bring your A game, Mr. Slauson.
First, thank you your your great work. You're a MUST follow on Twitter for any Jets fan. From what you've seen in practice, are the Jets putting Holmes or Cotchery in the slot in three receiver sets?
Thanks for the shout out, RTR. We really don't watch the "team" portion of practice, so it's hard to tell. My guess would be Cotchery. Holmes really isn't a slot guy and I think, for his first game back, they'll want to keep him in his comfort zone. They've been playing 3 WR formations about 30% of the time, and you will see Holmes every time they go to three wide. But I'd say Cotchery in the slot, or even Edwards on occasion.
Which Jet receiver do you think is most likely to have success against the Vikings' defense, and why?
The receiver that gets covered by Lito Sheppard.
Do you think the Jets have a shot a 12 win season and a likely first round bye?
Sure, why not? You wouldn't want to bet against a 3-1 team that is enjoying its best offensive streak in two years.
Rich, Do you think as the season goes on, LT's production will start to slow down due to his old age?
If you're asking, will he finish the season at 6.1 ypc, no, I don't think so. But you raise an interesting point. The Jets can't afford to run him into the ground -- i.e. Thomas Jones last year.
With Ellis and BT somehow becoming monster pass rushers this year, the addition of JT, and Pace coming back, how many sacks on Favre on Monday Night in NMS?
Favre has been taking a lot of hits -- 15 in three games, to be exact. The Vikings OTs are vulnerable in pass protection, so I think the Jets should be able to get a good rush off the edge. I have a feeling it could be a big night for Taylor. Just a funny feeling. Old pass rusher sacking old QB.
Do you think the comments by Revis and Cromartie will make ANY difference in how Moss plays on Monday?
Moss will NOT be a slouch on Monday night. It's a new team and he has something to prove. Moss always plays better with a chip on his shoulder, like he did in his first season in NE. Plus, he knows his former Pats coaches and teammates will be watching. The Jets will get his best, not because of the comments, but because it's a national stage.
Will the Jets make any moves before the trade deadline?
I'd never say never when it comes to potential trades and Mike Tannenbaum. I don't think they have any glaring needs, so I think it would take a major injury on Monday night for them to make a move.
NO, that's zero, way Revis should play this week..A: Moss is the perfect cover for a guy like Cromartie, who likes to bump you at the line and then use his size/speed combo to work you down field. Having Revis run sprints all night doesn't seem like a good long term strategy.
I agree totally, Steve.
how did those garbage-time carries for McKnight help out his status with Rex? will he start seeing snaps on a regular basis?
Not unless there's an injury to Tomlinson or Greene. As Rex noted the other day, they're working him at cornerback a little, some scout-team stuff. That's weird, huh?
hey rich, do you think that these "anonymous" quotes that always seem to pop into your columns and others from the Jets locker room bother anyone on the team (i.e. coaches, GM, other players). i understand kerry rhodes was a diva, but he does seem to have a point that the Jets player like to trash on former teammates...
Yes, I'm sure it does bother people, but I don't think any of the quotes have been critical of the organization or could be perceived as inflammatory. Sometimes, as journalists, we need to use anonymous quotes to convey the true story. Publicly, every player will say they respected Favre and had a blast playing with him. But is that story accurate? Not exactly. I don't think they're bitter toward Favre, I just think they're tired of answering questions about him two years after he left them.
Is drew coleman actually playing like the real deal? He was great in coverage against buffalo i dont recall him getting beat once..
You're right, he played well against the Bills, but remember one thing: Ryan Fitzpatick.
Hey Rich - any news on the Braylon Edwards front? Is this situation totally behind the Jets or is there still a real possibility of a suspension in 2010/2011?
If he goes get suspended, it won't be until 2011, after his case is adjudicated. By then, he'll be playing for the Detroit Lions and no one here will care.
What is this teams biggest weakness right now? Folk?
Let's not get on Folk just yet. It was only 1 miss. If he misses against Monday night, then we'll kill him....That's a joke. Sort of.
The Jets have been surprisingly good at stopping the run, but I'm still skeptical. Do you think they target a big DT in the draft next season?
They're definitely old at DT, but you know Rex: He doesn't like to draft DLM. He likes players at impact positions: OLB, CB, QB.
Rich comin ointo the season I was very concerned about the Jets D-Line. Thou they've had their fair share of injuries, more credit needs to be given to Eliis/Pouha/Devito for working so hard & holding down the fort. They don't receive enough credit for the job they've done.
Great point, Anthony. It's the most under-rated unit on the team. Part of the reason is that, in Ryan's system, the DLM are used as set-up guys for the LBs and DBs. Not much glory in that, but you're right, the line is playing very well. Pouha and DeVito are good football players, period. So is Ellis, but we've known that for a long time.
Sorry, folks, I'm out of time. Hope you enjoyed it. It should be a fascinating game on Monday night. It's one of those weeks where you wish you had a few more days of buildup because there are so many storylines. Thanks again and have a great day!
