Just got back from Mobil 1 press conference at Stewart-Haas. Hearing Best Buy committing to AJ Allmendinger later today. Lots happening. Fire away.
Hi Newt, thanks for the time, any update on sponsorship for the 24 next season? Will Dupont be completely gone or just back off the level they are spending now with the team?
DuPont will be there, just not with a big of a role. Nothing new to report. Still hearing All State, but never know.
Good column, but how can you leave out Gordon? And while I'm here any new information on sponsorship next season for Gordon? Thanks David.
You're right about Gordon. He got to 50 wins faster than any of the four I mentioned. But at the rate JJ is going he's put Jeff in his rear view mirror until Jeff can win another title. Sad but true. No word on sponsor.
David, is RPM looking at Allgaier as option in 3rd car b/c he seems to have "it" and would be a good fit if sponsorship found. Also, who do you think replaces Ragan after next year? The guy can't finish races.
Not sure about Allgaier, but know the folks at RPM would like a good young driver with potential. He fits the fill. As for Ragan, he'll be in the 6 one more year. Roush had to leave him there in order to keep UPS as the sponsor.
How's the injury doing. Hope you get better soon!
Getting better. Only take the pain pills at night now. Really stupid accident, dang dog. And now I have a gash on my nose where the pantry door came off the hinges and nailed me. Guess I'm a klutz.
Who do you have for this weekend i have gordon?
Good pick. He's good at Charlotte and had a winning car last weekend before the speeding penalty. I'm going with McMurray. He was second in the first Charlotte race.
First, thoughts & prayers for Shane Hmiel
Thanks for the reminder. Sounds as though the operation went well, though.
Good read today Newton...enjoyed it as always. So if you look at the stats McGrew is doing way worse than Eury Jr. did with Junior. Is Mr. Hendricks ego too big to admit he made a wrong choice as a replacement crew chief? Is he honestly going to keep things status quo for the next 2 years? Or does nobody else in the world want the job?
The problem is who do you turn to? My guess is they let it ride into next year. Then if things aren't working move Gustafson over to the 88 because sounds like Kenny Francis will be with Kahne in 2012.
Is Kyles engine blowing up at Cali just more bad karma for him being such a d-bag on the racetrack and in life? He always seems to have mechanical issues in the chase. At least he can still beat up on the little guys in Nationwide and Trucks for the rest of the season...
Hardly. Kyle's been quite well behaved lately to be honest. Several cars blew engines so I don't think you can blame it on that. AS for beating up on the little guys, then I guess you're opposed to Harvick and Edwards and Keselowski and others running in Cup as well.
David - We know JJ will not fair well in the Mount Rushmore discussion. It is more about popularity than skill. My question is whether JJ's background of off road truck racing has uniquely prepared him for the type of cars today that have to be driven loose. How well would his bacground translate to the cars driven in the 70's and 80's during the Petty, Pearson, Earnardt era?
As Pearson would tell you or me, if you're good you can drive in any era. JJ has adjusted from the old car to the new car that drives more like the cars of old, so I imagine he'd do quite well.
If HMS finishes the year with only the 48 team having any wins can it truly be considered the most dominate team in NASCAR? HMS has 3 teams with a big fat goose egg in the wins column this season. Why aren't the 5/24/88 able to win races anymore?
So what organization would you put ahead of HMS? Joe Gibbs Racing is the only other one you could argue based on your point. As for why the other cars at HMS aren't winning, if I knew that they'd have hired me already. Gordon has been really close half a dozen times. It's the way things go in this sport.
Does anyone besides JJ, Denny and Harvick have a realistic shot at the championship this year?
I wouldn't rule out Gordon and honestly not even Smoke even though he's 107 back. He's picked up 60 points in the last two races and had the best car at Loudon till he ran out of gas. The others haven't had a bad race yet, so maybe they are due. It usually happens.
Missed the chat last week. How is your rib? I think you need a spotter when you jog so you can avoid another run-in with Ernie.
Funny. Not sure the spotter could have reacted fast enough to warn me Ernie was going after a squirrel.
Good Day Newton, I think if Johnson wins the title again he ranks as one of the greatest. I know it's not under the old point system, like Earnhardt-Petty-Gordan did it, but some how and way his team finds a way to win it (and in dominating fashion). Would you agree?
Hey, Petty will tell you he won under five different point systems. But I agree, as much as I believe Pearson is the best all time, Johnson might change my mind.
How come NASCAR has a complusion to compare drivers from different eras whereas in NFL nobody ever bothers comparing Tom Brady to Terry Bradshaw, instead the greats are all appreciated for what they accomplished?
First of all, you're wrong. People are all the time comparing today's NFL, NBA, etc. players to those of the past. Like is LeBron as good as Jordon? Or is Brady as good as Montana? It's human nature.
Kevin Harvick was ripping his pit crew over the weekend when they had a slow stop. Does the crew get the opportunity to rip him when he speeds down pit road?
Drivers say things under the heat of the moment they wouldn't normally. I'm sure Kevin made peace with those guys afterwards. And yes, I'm sure under their breaths they are cussing him when he speeds.
Hi David, shouldn't Gordon and Jimmie be concerned that Stewart's "HMS affliated" cars are racing them so hard, especially how #39 is taking points that belong to Gordon?
Heck now. They should expect to be raced hard. Nobody is giving anybody a break now.
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.25 HI DAVID WHO YOUHAVE FOR CHARLOTTE SATURDAY NIGHT
As a numerologist, we find it curious that #16, #17 and #18 all had engine failures and really suspicious that 3 Roush-Yates and 1 Gibbs car all had engine failures but no Chevy's. Do you think all those engine problems were coincidence?
Well, two were Fords and one was a Toyota. Don't think there is any conpsiracy theory here. The Chevys have held up most of the year. Just coincidence.
If Jimmie had won outright points championships scored on all 36 races, and not a contrived system to try to make things more exciting, he might get more credit for his accomplishments. Until then that whole asterisk thing may apply to him.
No way. Had the title been for 36 races who's to say he wouldn't have raced differently earlier and won anyway.
Do you think Coach and JD will sit Rowdy and Dave down and talk them into racing for wins to work #18 back into title contention or ask Rowdy to help out Denny on the track?
Don't think you have to tell Busch to race for wins.
If VW decides to go NASCAR racing would they go to an existing team to get engines so VW engineers could tear them down and start there?
Doubt it. Toyota started with its own engine department. Expect VW would too.
Any word on this NASCAR meeting about the NW series? Please please tell us the cup guys will only be able to run limited races!! Like half the season or less! I have not watched many NW races in the past few years and when I do watch one it sickens me the cup guys are beating up on the underfunded teams.
No word yet, but look for some changes. Word is they'll fix it so Cup guys can't run for the title.
To be the most impressive performance on Sunday was Hamlin. That seems like the move of a champion.
That was a championship run. Have to have days like that to win it all.
Are you hearing anything about sponsor or driver announcements for the KBM grand opening on Thursday?
Nothing yet. Pretty sure it's mostly to show off the new place.
Why does Dale jr seem to run good at the 2 plate tracks but everywhere else he's sort of average?
He has a knack for plate racing and it's less about handling and skill.
As I am watching the race on Sunday and seeing JJ come through the field, I was wondering why other drivers don't drive him harder? They seem to just accept he is going to the front and let him go.
That's not the case at all, but perhaps they race him the way he races him. There's something to say about being a gentleman racer.
Who is more overrated, Kenseth or Jr.?
Are you kidding. Kenseth has a Cup title and has been in the Chase almost every year.
How's that Mobil 1 scheme look?. Did you treat yourself to a In-and-out- burger while you were here?
Car looked great. Liked the black in the paint scheme. No in-and-out burger, although one would be great. Still playing along with Mark Martin diet even though I don't have to. I haven't felt this good in a long time.
Jimmie had had some success in Charlotte, but hasn't figured out the track since they repaved it. He did win last year but with the spoiler, do you see him winning or running in the top 5? He spun out in the 600.
Some success? Think he's won like six times there. Heck yeah I see him running in the top 5. Wouldn't surprise me if he won it.
Thoughts on the new-look noses? No more snowplow, no more Biffle-esque braces!
Cute on Biffle. They're heading in the right direction with them. Still like Nationwide noses better than any.
Do you think Mr. H will change his mind and make a crew chief change since Dale Jr. is not going anywhere? Although I feel Lance is a good crew chief, they do not seem to be performing. What are your thoughts?
Not for the rest of the season, and my guess is not for at least the start of next season. He truly believes this combo will work.
By the way, if you haven't read today's column, check it out and tell me if you agree. Here's the link to make it easy on you. http://es.pn/9vj5wt
did you see the south park episode featuring NASCAR? hahaha
I did. Not bust a gut funny, but did find some of the characters amusing. Am told one of the reporters resembled me.
What is your take on James Buscher wrecking Danica in the nationwide series race at Auto Club Speedway?
It happens in big-time auto racing. Haven't given it a lot of thought. You?
Before the race starts do the cars line up by car # to fuel up? Is it possible that something happened with the fuel to cause #16, #17 and #18 plus #99 all have engine problems at Fontana?
Now you're reaching. No ryhme or reason for what happened to connect the dots.
What did you think of that caution with 15-20 laps to go? CB looked like he was running away with it. Another phantom caution? I saw the debris but Clint claims it was there the whole run
When you're in the lead and the caution comes out for debris you're going to complain if there's a boulder on the track. Enough said.
What was Lance thinking? No tires at Cali? That was a Eury Jr more. Jr wanted four and was told no. Yet people still blame Jr when he droped like a rock after that dumb move? Bah!
He took a gamble for track position. It didn't work out. I was more concerned that Gordon didn't make a two-tire stop after the speeding penalty to pick up ground.
what up newt? did they fix the sinkhole @ charlotte or is that gonna cause problems?
Should be fixed by the weekend. Will check it out and give an update later today. Have a tweetup at the Speedway Club at 6. If you want to come hang out, win a free dinner with me and tour with me of the garage on Saturday (you have to have race tickets to be eligible), come on down.
David - I am confused. I consistently read JJ is not that good, he just has a great crew chief. I then read that JG and Jr. would be a lot better if it were not for their crew chief's. Is everyone implying that it is the crew chief that really matters and not the driver?
As Pearson says in my column, it's a group effort even for the best of them. People can say JJ wouldn't be that good without Knaus, but maybe Knaus wouldn't be that good without JJ.
I am against Cup regulars running for the title in someone elses equipment. Let them run their own deals. Its too bad that good racers like Algaier lose their rides, but Busch, Edwards, etc can still get them when they don't need them.
It's the way of the world, the rich get richer. Honestly, though, would you really watch the Nationwide races if busch and Edwards and other stars weren't in it?
Does Waltrip get in the second hall of fame class?
He wouldn't get my vote. I would go with Pearson, Raymond Parks, Dale Inman, Cale Yarborough and Lee Petty.
Who's head rolls at Joe Gibbs Racing for what happened to Rowdy's engine at Fontana?
They've had this happen in the Chase before. Sure the guys in the engine shop are sick enough about what happened not to have their heads bitten off. Two Roush cars had problems. It happens.
HUGE fan of 48, whats with all the hating? class act, great guy do these people just hate domination or are all these Junior fans pouting?
I really wish I understood this hatred thing. If people got to know Jimmie they'd really like him. Did you see the piece on ESPN's pre-race show. He's just a regular guy who likes to have a beer with his buddies and enjoy life.
Does Jimmy win 4 straight under the old point system or is he a guy who knows how to work the "chase"
No way to know for sure, but I bet he would have won at least three.
David, I enjoyed the great article it?s always great to hear from the perspective of NASCAR legends. I am a Denny Hamlin fan, and kills me say this but I think that if JJ does win his 5th championship in a row in my opinion he will be the greatest diver of all time because, no matter what sport you?re in that is just an unreal accomplishment. My question to you is if Denny were to win the championship this year how many more wins is he going have to have, I?m thinking at least 2 in the chase. What do you think? Thank you for your time and the great article?s.
Thanks for the compliment. A for Hamlin, he'll need to win at least one and top 10 or maye 5 JJ to death.
David - although I hate comparing eras, my thought would be that JJ would probably win even more races in Pearon's era due to his adaptability, Knaus and less stringent rules.
Good point. Imagine what Knaus could do if they took the handcuffs off.
I've heard it argued that the non-chasers shouldn't be on the track with the chasers during the Chase. I think the same could be said of the Nationwide regulars all season. Lets face it, there are no NW regulars that are actually racing for the title, but they could really screw things up for Carl or Kyle or Brad. Let's give the Nationwide regulars their own series so that the Cup guys can race in Nationwide for the title without worrying about getting wrecked by a backmarker. :)
That's bull on the non-chasers theory. Few if any have proposed that. Now there are those who believe the Chase drivers should have their own point system, but they're just as fair game as anybody in a Chase race. As for the NW debut, it may never end.
What upcoming race can Denny gain the most points on JJ?
He's definitely a threat to win Martinsville. Problem is, he and JJ have won the last eight there and finished 1-2 three times. Can't make up points that way. Best bet might be Dega, where anything can happen.
Does the mechanical issues with both Roush and JGR essentially hand the chase to one of the Hendrick(or subsidiary) teams?
Wouldn't say hand, but if you do then say Smoke handed the title to JJ by running out of gas at Loudon. That has had the single-biggest impact on the Chase thus far.
How much is Denny worrying about his engine's after Kyle blew his last week? GO LOWES 48!!!!
Doubt he's losing sleep over it.
WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT MARK MARTIN GOOD RUN AT THE AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY THIS PAST WEEKEND.
Was great. He needed a few more to keep me on his diet, though.
Run, Kasey, (& Kenny F), Run! Do not go to Hendricks in 2012! Stay as smart as you have been in staying together for next year. Go to Stewart-Haas where your team mates come from similar racing experience (sprint cars, dirt tracks). Hendricks is highly over-rated!
Interesting concept there.
What was up with the call McGrew made to stay out Sunday? That was idiotic.
When you're looking to make something happen with nothing to lose you gamble.
Who do you think will be the nominees for the HOF?
Who do I think or who likely will it be. As I said earlier I'd go Pearson, Yarborough, Parks, Lee Petty and Dale Inmann. It'll probably be Pearson, Yarborough, Lee Petty, Waltrip and Parks.
Newt diet working out ok or you using your injury as an "excuse"? by the way, love your work on ESPN hope you get paid enough for sitting outside buildings for hours in the rain.
Diet worked great, but with every diet exercise is key. Lost 17.5 pounds in 21 days. Was down 15.5 in 12 with the exercise. You do the math. Thanks for the compliment. Love sitting in rain to keep the fans updated.
Hate to bring it up, but what was the final rule the the #33 broke?
Car out of tolerence, too high in left rear.
Not a question....listened to KK on PRN yesterday...he sure sounded the most relaxed i have ever heard him doing the interview...
No pressure. He's not in the Chase and his future is mapped out. Why not be relaxed?
I AM GOING TO THE RACE HEAR IN TEXAS IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS OR SO WHO DO YOU THING WILL WIN AT TMS BESIDE'S JJ WILL IT BE THE CHASER OR OUTSIDE THE CHASERS IF SO WHO DO YOU SEE WINING HEAR.
I like Gordon at Texas. Got any good restaurant recommendations for me out there?
If Smoke were to finish exactly 5th in every race left this year, could he take the championship? Could a JJ wreck at Talladega open the door?
He'd definitely be a contender.
Did anybody miss the 100 miles Sunday? I didn't.
Would love to have missed 200.
Newt, i just saw imagines of the new front nose on Smokes mobil 1 ride, i thought it was gonna have more brand identity?
Junior has only 1 win since he joined Hendrick, and that was on fuel mileage. Should they part ways and change teams? it has worked well for Jamie Mac!
I'd love to see him go back and ressurect DEI. Won't happen, but would love to see it. Would be great for the sport. But no, don't see him going anywhere.
How can people solely blame Jr when it was McGrew who made the stupid call to leave him out on Sunday when everybody else pitted.
Hey, Junior wasn't going to win the race any other way. It was a gambled that failed. Stuff happens.
How long (if ever) do you think it will take Kyle Busch to take serious look in mirror and realize he's looking at who's responsible for keeping him from reaching his championship goal? Doesn't appear he even respects advice from Coach Gibbs.
I think he has and he's made great strides. He was doing everything smart until the engine blew.
With the lack of sponsors is it time to reduce the size of the fields from 43 to 36?
No, because when everything comes back you'd be switching again. Let's see how this plays out for a few more years.
I like the idea of other manufacturers jumping into NASCAR. If they do, do you see a change to fuel injectors rather than carburetors? It makes more sense for a "stock car"
They are looking at fuel injection by 2012 already.
David - Thank you for your comment about JJ and the traditional point system. He finished 5th his rookie year and 2nd his second year under the old system. These were the only 2 years he raced under the old system. I also believe that if 10 other tracks were picked for the chase these tracks would become the best for the 48 team. The 48 team is racing during the most competitive time in the history of the sport and yet they dominate. It is unfortunte that others choose to rip the 48 team rather than focusing on the issues with their own team
See we're on the same page.
fans complain bout cup guys in nw but i bet half wouldn't tune in without them.
Bet half would tune out.
Danica's spotter sure messed up Sat. He said outside, outside, clear, outside right after Danica bounced off of the car on the outside.
Funniest line ever heard from spotter was a few years ago when, I believe it was with Casey Mears, he was told clear high, clear high. After the crash Mears or whoever the driver was said, "Guess it wasn't clear high."
What do you think of RCR next year with the improvements this year in addition to Menard coming on board?
Like the direction they're headed and it's a great move for Menard.
Do you media guys pay attention to all of Dale jr's cussing about wanting to run better or does that go in 1 ear and out the other?
All drivers curse in the race, or at least most do. Have you ever listened to Jeff Gordon? Or Kurt Busch, who goes crazy sometimes?
is conway still trying to get on the lead lap in california?
the cars have the new front end for next year( and it looks good) any news on the front shocks? will they actually allow travel?
Not sure exactly what will be done, but that is one of the areas they're looking at.
Get so tired of all the Dale, Jr. bashing! Don't believe he set out to be Nascar's "most popular" driver. Feel it was more his Dad's fan's who switched to root for him, in part as a way to honor his Dad, but also a way to deal with their own grieving. I have nothing but the utmost of respect and compassion for the way Jr. handled himself after such an enormously public loss of a father he idolized!
Has Robby Gordon officially retired from Sprint Cup racing?
Nope. Just taking a break to race other things.
Count me as one that tunes out of NW races now when I see how many Cup guys are in the race.
Regarding JJ or any (cream of the crop) driver running the season differently in The Chase era vs. old (good) points system, I gotta disagree for the most part. Don't tell me JJ was just points racing the two years he won championships without amassing the most points in a season, esp. 2007. He's a great racer, but not four in a row great. That meant something under the old points system, but not now...
My guess is he would have raced differently during the summer months under the old system and been right there at the end. Rememember, as a reader said earlier, he finished fifth and second under the old point system. Face it, the guy is great.
Will Sadler be in cup in 2011 or with Harvick in a lower series?
Definitely with Harvick in Trucks. Rest to be determined.
I think there are some elite drivers out there today, probably more than at any point in NASCAR history...how do you think Jimmie would be doing if he raced in the late 80's to late 90's for HMS?
Probably what he's doing now. The depth of the fields weren't nearly as strong in the '80s as they are now. More drivers and teams have a chance to win now than ever. Again, appreciate JJ for what he's doing.
That's it for me. Have to write a blog on Smoke and head to Charlotte Motor Speedway for a 6 pm tweetup. Join me if you can. And don't forget to follow on twitter at @Dnewtonespn. Later.
