Chat with Slayer's Kerry King

Buzzmaster
  (3:23 PM)

Slayer's Kerry King will be here at 3:30 p.m. ET to take your questions!

mike (arkansas)

The Vinyl Conflict is amazing. Of those 10 albums, which one is your favorite?

Kerry King
  (3:33 PM)

I would probably have to go with Reign in Blood. Historically, that changed the way people thought about thrash and it would become how we sounded like for the rest of our career.

Peter Cartwright (Burlington, Vermont)

What do you think the Silver and Black needs to become dominant again? Was the Al Davis era a good thing or a bad thing for the team?

Kerry King
  (3:33 PM)

The Al Davis era started out as a very good thing for the team and ever since 2003 has been a very big detriment to the team.

John (Seattle)

I have seen you guys about 8-10 times & love the music. My question is, do you ever get bored of doing the same show over

Kerry King
  (3:34 PM)

Not really. If they're in the set, chances are that we like them. The one thing is that when you get comfortable playing them live that you might get a blunder. You're sitting at home or at the bar in your mind and might have a mess up. That's the kind of thing that happens.

Sean (Boston)

Kerry, I can't count how many times I've seen you guys. Always incredible! Thanks! Who should be playing QB for the Raiders, Gradkowski or Campbell?

Kerry King
  (3:35 PM)

I think Gradkowski. I have a funny story involving that. I was at the home opener and I was sitting up there talking to one of the VIP handlers and I said I would like to see Gradkowski in there. And when I got up to go to the bathroom at halftime and came back, Gradkowski was in. Magic.

joanne (floresville,texas)

how long do you plan on preforming, you were awesome in san antonio, and do you feel metal music is getting better or worse.??

Kerry King
  (3:36 PM)

I think it's gotten better. It had it's trying time through the 90's. Once it survived grunge and new metal blip on the radar, people started to pay attention again. I think it's pretty cool right now.

Darren (Ireland)

If you had to choose between Grunge or Glam, which would it be?

Kerry King
  (3:36 PM)

I wouldn't play.

Kerry King
  (3:36 PM)

That's when I go fill out my Burger King application.

mustafa kemal (Long Island, New York)

How do you feel about beiing one of the biggest thrash and death metal influences.

Kerry King
  (3:37 PM)

It's always cool to be an influence to anything and luckily, we're influencing popular things. I think that's part of my inspiration to keep going now. I don't feel old, but when I was 25, I didn't think I'd still be playing at this age.

octavio lugo (so cal)

when are you going to find a new football team to follow? A. raiders are terrible. won't win super bowl in at least 10 yrs. B. following for most part are criminals and gangsters. no offense.

Kerry King
  (3:38 PM)

That's the difference between a fair weather fan and a non fair weather fan. You don't abandon your team when it's going to bad. I'm watching football all the time. I'm a big fan.

Billy (Austin, Texas)

Hey, I am fan of yours since early 80's. I wonder how long it takes to have your goatee grow that length you're having now?

Kerry King
  (3:38 PM)

It's been growing since '97.

Mike (Dublin, Ohio)

Great show in Columbus Sunday night. I was just curious to know if you ever wonder about game results on-stage?

Kerry King
  (3:39 PM)

From time to time. I remember Columbus, it was a good show. Dave Mustaine asked me when I was going on stage if I wanted football updates. That one I really didn't care, because I had lost our football pool by then.

Paul V (SoCal)

Since Kerry King is like a linebacker in Slayer and Dave Mustaine is like a quarterback for Megadeth, what would happen if you guys lined up against each other on the gridiron?

Kerry King
  (3:40 PM)

Weight always wins. I'm going with the linebacker.

Mark (NYC)

Hi there, Kerry. Have you ever heard any Slayer music being played before or during a football game? Is there a particular team that could use it? Thanks. Mark

Kerry King
  (3:41 PM)

Apparently, the same game that I mentioned earlier, pretty much every stadium does it, they have a guy on camera and someone fires up Raider Nation, I was on the field before warmups and they put it on camera and they played it.

Darren (Ireland)

Who do you think is the most important band of the last 10 years?

Kerry King
  (3:41 PM)

I don't really have an answer for that. I can't think of one band that stands out above all others.

Brian (New York)

Family aside, Slayer and the Raiders my greatest loves in life - what's you one favorite moment in Raider history?

Kerry King
  (3:42 PM)

It was kind of my history too. At that same game, I sat next to Fred Belitnikoff. I had him sign my jersey. That was awesome.

Matt (CA)

You rock. Raiders suck.

Kerry King
  (3:43 PM)

Pretty much. They have a little bit of life, man.

Damian (Panama)

What is your biggest influence in your playing? What have you done to maintain your playing skills? What do you think about shredders do you see yourself doing your own solo album?

Kerry King
  (3:44 PM)

It's kind of like riding a bike. When we're not touring, I rarely play, and that's not good advice, but that's how it is. I always wonder with all of those months that I'm home and not playing, how much better I could be. But an hour before a show, I'm warming up.

mike (CT)

dude whats your favorite breed of snake

Kerry King
  (3:44 PM)

Python.

charlie (williamsburg(virginia))

is it harder for you to stay on stage now for a long set now then say 20 years ago.

Kerry King
  (3:45 PM)

Not really. Aches and pains aside, that's just a part of getting older. The only thing I look forward to, I hate to travel, it doesn't matter how luxurious your travel is, it's not fun. It's the stage time that's fun.

Alex (Grand Rapids)

Any new bands you've been into lately?

Kerry King
  (3:46 PM)

Well, Alex, I'll see you in Grand Rapids tomorrow. New bands? I don't know. New bands to me is like Flames, but they're like 15 years old. Bonded by Blood, I have their disc, but haven't had time to listen to it yet.

jason (louisville)

Who do you like more? Mcfadden or Bush? Bush is from Louisville.. Loved the show Tues. night!!

Kerry King
  (3:46 PM)

Man, that's tough. I like them both. They're like thunder and lightning. Two years ago, when I was there for the home opener, McFadden walked by and then Bush and there's just so much more to him.

Daniel (London)

Are Slayer going to working on another studio album any time soon?

Kerry King
  (3:47 PM)

Just a little bit. After this tour, which ends in 9 days and then I'm home for four months. This won't be the six month party that my last break was. I didn't even pick up the guitar.

Mike (Ca)

what's wour favorite part about going to Raiders' games

Kerry King
  (3:48 PM)

This last time was really fun. I went with Chuck and our lives. We did the radio broadcast out in the parking lot. Watching the game with Fred Biletnikoff was cool. The whole Raider Nation thing.

shawn hill (louisville ky)

how was playing with Metallica? Do you plan on touring with Metallica again anytime soon?

Kerry King
  (3:49 PM)

That was awesome. I think all parties want to do that more. It was only in a few eastern European countries. Any place that we can make it happen would love to see it live, I think.

JeremyB (Traverse City, Michigan)

Kerry, what is your opinion of Raiders owner Al Davis?

Kerry King
  (3:50 PM)

Without completely blasting the guy, his ideas to me seem outdated. THe game has passed him by and that's why the team has been horrific for the last 7 years.

charlie (williamsburg(virginia))

kerry ,does any member of slayer ever miss a note ,chord or even does tom miss a lyric

Kerry King
  (3:50 PM)

Absolutely. Part of that goes with daydreaming on stage. The only thing I have in my monitors is Dave. If he and I lock in, it's a good show.

Alex (Grand Rapids)

I'm there, got my ticket months ago. Any chances of a curveball in the set tomorrow?

Kerry King
  (3:51 PM)

Not really. Since we're touring with Megadeth, we only have an hour and 10 minutes and we manage to get 16 songs in there.

Dave (so cal)

will you ever play in another band after Slayer?

Kerry King
  (3:52 PM)

It depends. I'm not against it. I've played with a lot of people. I've been on record with Zombie, I can't even think of all of them. I have loads of friends in the biz and I would never write that off, because something fun might come up.

Marcus B (Homewood,Il)

Are any of the current raider players big fans of yours and the band??

Kerry King
  (3:52 PM)

I don't know. The past couple of times I've been there, I haven't been there at a time where I could hang with the players. But I hear there are a couple of photos of the last time I was there posted around the stadium. So, someone is a fan.

John (Manchester)

Why don't you grow your hair back? Dont you miss headbanging with all that hair?

Kerry King
  (3:53 PM)

Nah. I'm sure it would look too spotty and ridiculous. I try to create movement with the beard and the chains.

Paul (Germany)

Any more touring plans this year after the Jagermeister tour?

Kerry King
  (3:53 PM)

No. We're done until the end of February.

Jake (NJ)

who is the bigger Raider fan - you or Jeff?

Kerry King
  (3:54 PM)

I've been to games. That tells you right there. I wore the jersey in '94, I don't care what he's wearing now. I have my time served.

Ivana (Bolivia)

I saw alot of coments about you guys coming the next year to south America like, Chile-Bolivia etc..is it true???

Kerry King
  (3:55 PM)

I would imagine. They were trying to make that work in November/December this year, but for some reason it didn't work. I don't know what the time frame is for next year.

Chris R (Rodeo,CA)

Do you plan on coming to anymore games This season?

Kerry King
  (3:55 PM)

Well, I have time on my hands, that I wasn't expecting, so that's a possibility.

Brian (Texas)

How was it playing on the Jimmy Fallon show? And how many of the cabs were dummy cabs?

Kerry King
  (3:56 PM)

It sounded exceptionally good. Whenever you go into a TV situation, you never know how it sounds. When I was playing, I thought it sounded good and that's what people watching told me.

Kerry King
  (3:56 PM)

Thanks for chatting. We'll catch you on the road.
