Hey, hey, hey...how is everyone this fine Tuesday afternoon? Wow -what a week in the NFL. Lots of head injuries and even more discussion about them... And then there were a few other injuries to talk about...
Nice win by your 49ers. Can't say same about my Cowboys. As of today, does it look like Cooley will play wk 7?? Thanks.
Angelica: I really appreciate the congrats. Especially since I know Cowboys fans are taking their lumps too. For once Cowboys and Niners fans are on the same page.As for Cooley, no way to know right now. He actually was headed for a CT scan today. Definitely concerning that he's got a history of multiple concussions. But it all depends on how he recovers this week.
Hi Stephania,Do you know if Vernon Davis has had an MRI done yet on his knee and if so what were the results? THANKS
Dan: He has had his MRI. Reports have ranged from "no structural damage" to the team calling it a sprain (which btw sometimes is not in conflict, there might be no major damage, just some swelling, and they call it a sprain). The good news is that it sounds as if he is not expected to miss time.
Getting my question in early, what is the status of Breaston? Will he play this week? And is he worth starting over Armstrong or Bryant?
Mike: The early word is that he is expected back this week following the team's bye. But, of course, since they've been on a bye we don't get much info about their activity. It would be nice to see him engage in full practice for us to be convinced - but if he's back full speed I like him.
How come you never write about smith (Car) in your injury blogs? can you provide a little infor here? is this a 2009 turner like high ankle sprain that will pretty much limit him for the rest of the season?
Leif: I don't know about NEVER- after all, gave a whole column preseason to S Smith. But the fact is, we were told almost immediately that Smith would miss the next game and then they went on bye. There is virtually ZERO news from a team while on bye as they are not required to give updates. Sooo...the first updates on him will officially come Weds. That said, the team was not optimistic about his availability for this week before the bye. It takes about 4-6 weeks to gain decent recovery. Has to stay out long enough to get well enough to perform for rest of season.
Hello Stephania, do you think Run DMC will be healthy enough to go Sunday
PJ: DMC said he is going to test his hamstring in practice Weds to see if he has "burst" He could not test it last week which is why he sat out. He's going to test it, see how it responds (not only then but need to see how it feels the next day) and then we'll have a better clue.
I noticed that Reggie Bush is listed as questionable this week, making it impossible for me to make any waiver moves until I take him off my IR. What are the odds that he actually plays this week?
Hi Jenn in my hometown: I think the odds are that he still sits out...until Week 8. Not certain yet, but those are the odds.
Go Giants today! I think they're gonna rock Hamels. On a more serious note, I drafted Jermichael Finley and I own Cooley, DeSean Jackson and Malcom Floyd. Is there any good news you can give me?
Tim: I think you'd better root for the Giants. You should release Finley for sure as he's done for the year. The rest of your guys are likely to miss this week so better start shopping...and go Giants!
I know you will be asked this a million times, but how is Antonio Gates looking for the upcoming week?
Keith: Yes, many inquiries - but saw yours first! The early reports out of San Diego are pretty positive. It sounds as if they think Gates will play. It's his toe - and it's on his left foot - no word as to whether it's the same toe that he had surgery on but the team saying it's unrelated. Sooo,if that is all true, then it appears to be good news, at least early on.
Whats the word on Torain? Thanks!
Mike: He had his knee heavily wrapped in the locker room after the game - but he supposedly said he was doing "great" when asked. Of course, they're not allowed to talk about their injuries. It sounds like nothing for us to be worried about at this point. Now he might miss some practice reps in which case he is sure to be listed as Q (which Shanahan does) but we'll see more as the week goes on.
Any report on VY's injury? I have Britt and I'm wondering how effective he will be without Young.
Ian: Calling himself day-to-day - but to me the good sign was that once he got it looked at last night and they put a brace on, he was up and staying loose on the sideline. Maybe even could have come back - but clearly not necessary. So I'm encouraged, not that it means he's a sure start this week, but at least encouraged so far.
Does Owen Daniels look like he has fully recovered from his injury? Will he continue to be on some kind of snap count?
Patrick: I think he's getting there. This probably continues to evolve for the next few weeks. No snap count. Just a matter of him getting involved and making plays.
How is a "sprained toe" different from "turf toe" when it comes to football injuries? Gates has the sprained kind, whereas Jahvid Best had the turf kind. Jahvid was able to play on it (clearly diminished skillz however). What about Gates?
Greg: Fantastic question. So a sprain is any ligament injury - which means it can be any ligament of any toe. Turf toe is a specific "sprain" involving the ligaments that anchor the big toe to the foot. A severe turf toe also involves the fibrous tissue underneath the ligaments and something called the plantar plate, when bad needs surgery (that's what Gates had before). Best - turf toe - means big toe affected. Gates' latest injury - we don't know which toe, and where on that toe.
Stephie BadNews, Congrats on getting in Madden 11, can't wait to play as you. Do I need to be worried at all about Romo's left hand injury?
Joel: Thank you!! I am so excited - just saw still pics of my RB namesake today. I am rated as faster than Nate, Matthew and Pod...ha!!And no, don't worry about Romo. Minor bruised thumb and it's non-throwing hand. Main thing would be taking snaps if he had a lot of swelling but they've already indicated they don't expect him to miss practice.
Hillis looked good especially vs the steelers d. Any news on him, would be a nice start this wk vs saints, thanks
Tony: Agree, given the tough matchup. There is no news on him post-game, which I think is a good sign, but they were a bit preoccupied with the loss of 2 WRs. So we will watch this week's practice reports but so far, so good.
Just picked up Stefan Baadknews in Madden, help me out! Is Moreno finally good to go against a poor Oakland D? And is DMC healthy enough to take back the starting job after a terrible performance by Bush?
Chris: Awesome - want to see how my player rating does. Moreno was out there a bit last week but was a bit rusty, lost a fumble and didn't do much else. There has been no word of any setback, so assuming he emerged OK, you should see the team use him more this week. And we talked DMC earlier - will be interesting to see if there's any controversy in Oakland this week.
At the risk of being black-balled from the chat, how bad is the injury to Nate Kaeding and how long do you think he may be out?
J.B: HaHa! You get the question posted for entertainment value. Not sure how long the groin injury will keep him out but I will say that they already expect him out this week. If he's on your fantasy team, start looking for a replacement.
Will Jahvid Best be 100% going into next week since he has a bye this week?
Tyler: Without being able to evaluate a player up close, always hard for me to sign off on "100%" healthy...but the bye is certainly coming at a nice time and can only help. He's actually made it through pretty impressively considering what the injury was called...but unfortunately the only way we know he's 100% is after he gets through the remainder of the season without a setback. No reason to avoid him right now though.
Ms. Bell, any news about Keller?
Chris: Keller was scheduled to undergo an MRI on his wrist but the team has not shared any results yet. If there's anything good, it's that he was able to finish the game, although sometimes the adrenaline of the moment helps with that. So unfortunately, nothing definitive yet.
Can I get some love for Defensive players? Any news on Briggs or Clay Matthews?
Greg: And why not? How about some good news too? It looks like both Matthews and Briggs are expected back in Week 7. Now we should know to check practice reports throughout the week, but so far the news is positive.
Any updates on Addai?
Mark: He came into Week 6 with his right shoulder bothering him...he left with his left shoulder bothering him - and it was in a sling on Monday. Bill Polian said they would know more after tests later in the week, but right now we're not sure what his injury is. Bye week came at just the right time for him.
Other than pretend to be a 49ers/Giants fan how can someone get a question read on your blogs? Do you have any info on Floyd? Should i anticpate him being out for a while? If so, what do you think of a swap for Ochocinco?
Nope - gotta love the 49ers or Giants to get a question answered...seriously...is that how you think I pick (OK, maybe there's a tiny bias, but I try to make the chat national - and international when we have overseas guests). And I already answered about Floyd - but no, as of right now I wouldnt trade for Ochocinco. Need to give Floyd at least a week to see how he responds before giving up.
Will Vick"s ribs be better after the Eagles' bye??
James: He seems to think so. Honestly, I suspect this thing could bother him throughout the season. I think he can get back around Week 9 or 10 assuming all goes well, but a big, bad hit could spell trouble b/c it's likely to aggravate the condition. So it's very hard to predict how he'll gold up.
Any news on James Starks!?! Can't make any waiver moves or trades yet because he's listed as Q instead of O and I'm not prepared to drop anyone on the bench if he's not gonna stay Q for long. Thanks!
brett: He's expected to come off the PUP list in time for practice Weds and I don't think it will be long before he's playing. He might not make it into the lineup this weekend, but I don't think it's much longer. I kinda like him as a deep sleeper...maybe I'm going to try to snag him this week.
Hi There - Any news on Pierre Thomas? Just trying to gauge who will start in week 7 with Thomas and Bush potentially on ice.
Dave: They have given Thomas hope each week- - but we learned last week that he could not do any cutting yet. I need to see that activity before I have confidence - and with him getting a 4-6 week timetable (which we also just learned), I think his status as of now is iffy at best.
Go Phillies! You won't post that. Do you think Torain has done or will do enough to keep the starting job once Portis is healthy?
Sure I will Dan - equal opportunity chat. But naturally I am not rooting for your team...I think there's some question as to whether Portis will be healthy enough to challenge for the starting job. Way too early to tell, but remember he tore the muscle from the bone. Takes a while for that to scar in. Then he has to get game shape back. As a RB, that is tough. I think Torain is in the spot for the foreseeable future.
Here's confidence - I'm going to tell Stephania the 49ers are terrible, and she'll still answer my question... Austin Collie seems to be a game-time decision every week, but he always plays. Is this going to be the trend or is he in danger of missing some time?
Bryan: You are right...b/c I am once again drinking the 49er Kool-Aid. Collie has been playing through a foot issue - and I think they have been resting him each week hoping he can go on Sundays...which he has. Now with the bye they have to hope he's getting a chance to get healthy...as you know, we will have to wait until after the bye to get any updates.
Thanks very much for coming today. I appreciate it!! See you back on Friday!
