ESPN Surfing
  (2:01 PM)

Hey everyone, Jordy's calling in from Steamer Lane any minute.

ESPN Surfing
  (2:02 PM)

They just pushed the call for the next round at the Cold Water Classic to noon, West Coast time.

ESPN Surfing
  (2:02 PM)

So we'll have him on the horn for a few minutes.

Bob Cobb (Manhattan)

How difficult is the rodeo flip?

Jordy
  (2:04 PM)

it's probably one of the most difficult moves in surfing it's up there. It's critical you have to find the right kind of wave. you need the right kind of wave.

mary (seattle)

how old do you think kelly has to get before he loses his superpowers?

Jordy
  (2:04 PM)

Not too sure. He's like wine, the older he gets the better he gets. It's good inspiration, shows how long your career can last.

Matthew (San Diego)

Why did you choose Newport when you decided to move to the states?

Jordy
  (2:05 PM)

It's central to everywhere. 25 minutes from San Clemente, or if i want to head up to Santa Barbara. and O'Niell is close to there too.

Eric (Virginia Beach )

Who's your favorite person to surf with outside competitions?

Jordy
  (2:05 PM)

I'd go with probably just my dad. Love having fun with the old man.

Trevor (Australia)

Even though you're sponsored by JS Industries and living on another continent now, do you still find time to sneak in a surf on your dad's boards and do you ever ride ride them in comps?

Jordy
  (2:06 PM)

I still get to surf Dads boards and they're amazing. I wouldn't be where I am today without them.

Alison (Cannon Beach OR)

You're pretty close this year and maybe you'll have more shots at it, but do you ever look at Taj or Parko and think, "This might be my best chance?"

Jordy
  (2:07 PM)

I'm just having fun with everything. I made a promise that I would enjoy myself this year. And i haven't taken things too serious. World title or not I have plenty time. I'm only 22. When guys are in their 30s, maybe they freak out. But i think the most important thing is to enjoy it.

Carl Severson (Asbury Park, NJ)

Obligatory South Africa surf/shark question: Ever had any run ins with sharks surfing your local turf?

Jordy
  (2:08 PM)

i have. In Jbay five years ago, a friend was attacked right in front of me. It was before a contest, and he was in the first heat. Everyone scratched for the beach. It nailed his board, it was super low tide, it came under his board. The shark nailed the board, and it wasn't too deep so it was thrashing about. Everyone freaked out and paddled into the beach.

Darryl (Bean)

What's your favorite stop of the Tour?

Jordy
  (2:09 PM)

Definitely Jbay because it's home and I don't get to go home much. But I actually like Hawaii. It's the end of the year and it's good to look forward to a new year. Good waves and friends.

Stuart (Tampa FL)

People always talk about kelly playing headgames with his competitors. Has he tried that with you?

Jordy
  (2:10 PM)

I'm not too sure if he's tried but it hasn't worked. but i don't buy into any of that. He can try all he wants, I just do my thing.

Dan (Phelps)

How close were you to beating Slater last week, do you think?

Jordy
  (2:10 PM)

I felt I was pretty close. A few people said I should have won. But I don't know. If you win you win and if you lose you should lose with a smile. It could be as close as .01 but if you lose you lose. It wasn't a great performance by anybody in that heat. It could have gone either way.

Spencer (Norcal)

Jordy... Its awesome to see big guys rip. It's not just a small guys sport anymore. I'm young but growing fast. 6'1" 170 and am inspired by you. Just a couple years ago I was a small grom. What words of advice can you give me as I get bigger and taller?

Jordy
  (2:12 PM)

It depends on technique. and boards are critical these days. You can get smaller boards and wider and thicker. I ride a 6'2 and a half. It depends on the waves, but in average waves, something that's your height but a little wider and thicker is best.

Christiaan Nagel (Durban, SA)

Will the O'Niell Cold Water contribute to your ASP points? You can still technical win the title if Kelly bombs out in at least one event and you win both, what combination do you need? Proud of you son!

Jordy
  (2:12 PM)

The CWC is an event I love coming to do but it doesn't effect the world tour. In Puerto Rico all it takes is kelly to fumble once and I can take the lead.

Kevin (Carlsbad)

You're in the running to be the first O'Neill world champ since the 70s. Any pressures from your sponsor to make it happen?

Jordy
  (2:13 PM)

Nothing what so ever. They've been amazing. They've been really good. I take my hat off to them. They've been so supportive and everyone's great. They let me do my thing and live good.

Tim (California)

Do you think the waves will be good at the Puerto Rico event? If, so do you know anything about the break and how it will affect your surfing strategy?

Jordy
  (2:14 PM)

I don't know too much about the wave. I'm going with an open mind and see what it has to offer. I've heard it's a wedgy wave that suits my surfing. Hopefully we get some good ramps.

Frank (Huntington Beach CA)

What would a world title mean for you?

Jordy
  (2:14 PM)

It would mean great things. Once a world champ always a world champ. It's every surfer's dream, it's what they want to do when they reach this level of comeptition. IT would be awesome for my career. But i don't want it to be forced, I want it to feel natural. That would be better for everyone.

Frank (Montoya)

How many boards do you travel with? How much does it cost to get them all on an airplane?

Jordy
  (2:15 PM)

Somewhere around 40, for sure. It was maybe 36 or 37. But I got six new boards while I was there. It didn't cost much going there, but coming back it cost like 4 grand.

Mike (Boston)

Do you work out during the season, or does surfing keep you in good enough shape to, well, surf?

Jordy
  (2:16 PM)

I haven't been working out too much this year. If you call going to the bowling alley and watching movies working out? I surf a lot and that keeps me in shape. I guess the older I get I'll slow down and not eat so many burgers.

Dan (wilmington nc)

i think that your surfing has the perfect balance of aerial and power...when surfing heats do you try to display what you have in both aerial and power?

Jordy
  (2:16 PM)

I see what the wave has to offer. I don't really plan the way i'll surf a wave. I'll stand up and see where I go. Generally I try for power, but progressive power I guess is what I try to portray.

craig (nyc)

why are there no lefts, other than chops (pipe doesn't count bc of backdoor), on tour? can you surf backhand?

Jordy
  (2:17 PM)

There are! I get that a lot but there's a bunch. France was a left, Portugal was a left. Pipeline, Trestles you can go left. It's like six out of ten. There's a few lefts. I guess you can go right more and the rights are better waves, so that's why people complain.

Mike (Huntington Beach)

Hey Jordy - you've been in great form all year, and so close to top ranking. Heading into the final two events, are you determined to beat out Kelly or content with your performance thus far and planning to just have fun?

Jordy
  (2:18 PM)

I'm determined to win, I'm more determined to win than to beat anyone. If he's in the way, it would be nice to beat him.

Kyle Rubin (Port Elizabeth)

Hey Jordy don't you ever miss just free surfing with your friends back at home?

Jordy
  (2:18 PM)

We have great waves at home and with no crowds. You can surf with your buddy and share waves. That's the thing I miss the most.

Ross (Boston)

What has been your inspiration to do your best; self-motivation or something else or both? If it's "something else" whats is it!?

Jordy
  (2:19 PM)

A lot of self motivation. I don't know where IU get it from, but I wake up in the morning and I just have it. I try to achieve something each day and thats how i look at things. Step by step.

Steve (Bondi Beach)

When you won in South Africa this July, there were fans blowing vuvuzela horns. Are they as annoying in person as they sounded on TV during the World Cup?

Jordy
  (2:20 PM)

It defintely is. It's even worse, but that's the spirit of soccer and South African culture. I do one. I own a few. And they are annoying. It's great when they're going for you. That's when you love them. For anyone else it's terrible.

Laurens (Belgium)

What advice would you give a guy that can only surf great waves one or two weeks a year?

Jordy
  (2:20 PM)

Make sure you're fit because you'll be surfing a long time.

Jose (barcelona)

Hy jordy do u like soccer ? what team?

Jordy
  (2:21 PM)

Premier league I'll go with Arsenal. World Cup, obviously my own country. and for a player I'll go with Ronaldo.

Patrick Farley (San Clemente CA)

I know the two of you tend to downplay the rivalry, but does Dane's progression and ability push your level of surfing significantly? Or is it one of those things that you're just aware of?

Jordy
  (2:22 PM)

Defeinitely we'd be lying if we said it doesn't. He's one of the reasons I wake up motivated in the morning. He's a great surfing and a great guy. I spent a lot of time with him in Europe. I could tell, there's that tension: what's he going to do on the next wave. It's good, keeps you on your toes and keeps you pushing.

Jordy
  (2:23 PM)

Thanks for reading everything. I hope everyone can stay tuned for the rest of the year and things come off good.
