Chat with Nick Friedell

Nick Friedell
  (1:30 PM)

What is going on, everybody? The preseason is finally coming to an end. Let's get the chat rolling ...

Mel (Irvine)

Hey Nick, is Luol Deng really going to start shooting more 3's or is this just talk.

Nick Friedell
  (1:32 PM)

Deng is going to shoot a lot more threes. He's been working on that shot all summer and he has confidence that he can make a lot more of them this year. He loves Thibodeau's offense, and he will get a lot of open looks playing alongside Rose.

jack (valparaiso)

Will Joakim Noah be an All-Star this year?

Nick Friedell
  (1:32 PM)

Yep, I think so.

Dave (Novato)

Hello Nick, are there any concerns about the minutes and the intense practices that Thibs has been running having an affect on the Bulls during the season?

Nick Friedell
  (1:34 PM)

The players don't seem to be concerned at all, but there is no doubt that Thibs' practices are more intense than most around the league. It will be interesting to see if he backs off the intensity level at all once the season starts.

TPH (Ohio)

What are the Bulls chances of landing Carmelo, and what would it take, given Noah can't be traded.

Nick Friedell
  (1:35 PM)

Extremely slim. Denver would have to take back Deng's contract and they simply don't want to do that right now.

Grant (Chicago)

How will Carlos Boozer's eventual presence in the post affect Derrick Rose? Will we continue to see the hard-riving Rose of the past, or will there be a new dynamic?

Nick Friedell
  (1:37 PM)

You're going to see a lot of pick and rolls with Rose and Boozer. I don't think Rose will be any less aggressive though. He is not going to stop driving hard to the basket. He knows he can score a lot of points that way and create space for the rest of his teammates.

Anthony (chicago)

Nick, when are you going to get a hair cut?

Nick Friedell
  (1:38 PM)

Soon. Did my mom tell you to send this question in?

Nick (Wisconsin)

It's awesome how Thibs is using Deng this year, he is going to be crazy efficient. Kinda funny how in a few months he is gonna go from someone the Bulls were perceived to be wanting to just dump for cap space to someone of great value.

Nick Friedell
  (1:39 PM)

If Deng stays healthy, he is going to have a great year. But don't think the Bulls still wouldn't deal him if the right deal came around. They would love to get that contract off the books.

Gabe (Chicago)

Is Korver going to start?

Nick Friedell
  (1:39 PM)

No, Thibs likes him coming off the bench.

JayW (Northbrook)

Whats crackin' Nick! D Rose really seems to have come out of his shell since the Worlds. He appears much more comfortable in front of reporters and I'm lovin those Adidas commercials. Do you think that comfort level will help him on the court as well (more communication with his teammates, getting guys fired up, etc)?

Nick Friedell
  (1:41 PM)

Yes, I do. I think he is already becoming more vocal on the floor and I have no doubt that you will see him start to become even louder once the season starts. He knows the Bulls are his team and he realizes that he has to be the guy who sets the tone.

Eli (Macomb)

Will james johnson be a solid player this season?

Nick Friedell
  (1:43 PM)

Too early to tell. He has definitely improved in the last few months though. He dropped a lot of weight and seems to be focused on basketball again. The problem is he still makes a few mental mistakes a game. I'm not sure where he's going to find consistent minutes once the season begins.

Carlos (AZ)

What up Nick! Do you know how well Boozer's rehab is going, is he still scheduled to be out only a month? Any setbacks?

Nick Friedell
  (1:44 PM)

It seems to be going well. He gets his cast off in about a week and a half and then he starts the rehab process. If all goes according to plan I think you'll see him back on the floor around the first week in December.

Adam (Chicago)

Why is Melo set on NY? If a bad team trades their best players for Carmelo Anthony, they're a bad team with Carmelo Anthony.

Nick Friedell
  (1:46 PM)

Agreed. I just think he has always wanted to play in New York. It's also one of the places his wife wants to be in the most.

Eli (Macomb)

Do the bulls have a real shot at the east this year

Nick Friedell
  (1:46 PM)

No.

Tim (Northbrook)

Better chance to be an All-Star, Rose/Noah?

Nick Friedell
  (1:48 PM)

Assuming both stay healthy, Rose will be an All-Star. I think Noah will make it too, but Rose is almost a guarantee if he continues to get better.

Bill (Chicago)

Why does Thibs like Scalabrine so much? He seems like a waste of valuable air space on the floor!

Nick Friedell
  (1:49 PM)

I don't understand what everyone's problem with Scal is? Thibs loves him, he's a solid guy to have on the bench and he works hard in practice. He's a solid 12th man on a team who probably won't play much once the regular season begins. Would you rather have him or Jannero Pargo again?

Benny the Bull (UC)

Should Bulls fans be worried about Gibson? He's either regressed, playing injured or lost in Thibs system?

Nick Friedell
  (1:50 PM)

He's still trying to get healthy. I think he's going to be fine, but that plantar fasciitis is a recurring issue for him. Don't hurt yourself on any ladders tonight, Benny.

Paul (Chicago)

why are we still after melo? i don't see him playing defense at all and buying into coach's system. won't he just be a distraction?

Nick Friedell
  (1:52 PM)

The Bulls are still interested in Melo because he is one of the best players in the league. If they get him, they have a legitimate chance to contend for a title.

Bill (Chicago)

I really like the development of Omer Asik so far... do you see him as a trade chip later on this season?

Nick Friedell
  (1:53 PM)

He could be, but the Bulls are high on him. In fact, Derrick just mentioned how much Asik has improved over the last few weeks. By no means is he untouchable, but the Bulls would have to be completely sold on what they're getting in return in order to deal Asik. Teams need size to compete in this league, and that is exactly what Asik gives them.

Geno (Kansas City)

Do you think the bulls will continue to turnover the ball like they did in preseason? What steps are they taking now to prevent that?

Nick Friedell
  (1:55 PM)

I don't -- for this reason: Rose mentioned that the reason the team is turning the ball over so much in the preseason is because they are too unselfish. Once the season starts, I would expect the players to look for their own shot a little more.

Tetlak (Chicago)

So why are the Bulls only going with 13 guys? It must mean they are looking to pick somebody up through trade doesnt it?

Nick Friedell
  (1:55 PM)

Yep, that's my guess. I think the Bulls will add at least one more player in the near future.

Tommy Boy (Autoparts)

Do you think Bogans is gonna start the year at SG or does Brewer still have a chance to start the season opener?

Nick Friedell
  (1:57 PM)

If you had asked me that question at the beginning of camp I would have said Brewer without much hesitation. Now, I think it may well be Bogans who gets the nod on opening night. Thibs likes him a lot and Brewer hasn't exactly played great during the preseason.

Nathan (Phoenix)

Nick, The bulls seem to have a question mark at shooting guard. What are the chances they bring back Flip Murray?

Nick Friedell
  (1:58 PM)

Seriously doubtful, but who knows? I thought Flip was on his way to play in China or something ...

scott (chicago)

Would an aging Manu help the bulls if the Spurs are looking bad mid season? Would the Spurs move him, and would we have the right contracts to get him as our starting 2?

Nick Friedell
  (2:00 PM)

Here's the question you have to ask yourself. Would the addition of Manu make the Bulls a title contender? No. Why would the Bulls trade for an aging Manu when they still have a 25 year-old Deng? Neither one is the type of superstar player who can change the balance of power in the East.

Mike (Lake bluff)

Hey Nick, D Rose almost had a triple-double against the Raptors. I was wondering are we gonna see more of this kind of production out of Rose this year? And will Rose emerge as one of the top 3 PG in the league?

Nick Friedell
  (2:02 PM)

I think Rose is going to have a huge year this season. Right now, I'd still take Williams and Paul ahead of him, but that gap is closing as each year rolls by.

Matt Fishman (Chicago)

Everyone seems to be really high on Asik. Is he ready to play meaningful minutes with Boozer out? Or is he still a longer term project?

Nick Friedell
  (2:03 PM)

He's still a project, but he should be able to give the Bulls 10-15 solid minutes a game.

Moe (Staten Island, NY)

With Noah, Boozer, Asik, Deng plus Rose looking to improve on his rebounding, do you think the Bulls could be one of the best rebounding teams ever?

Nick Friedell
  (2:03 PM)

Not ever, but I think they will be very good again. Remember, they were consistently one of the best rebounding teams throughout the year a season ago.

Luke (SF)

My office is empty, and you're my only entertainment right now. Is it feasible that the bulls could have 3 people going to the all-star game with Rose, Noah and Boozer?

Nick Friedell
  (2:05 PM)

Luke, Where did everybody go? I don't Boozer is making the All-Star team. It's tough to miss a month and return to an All-Star level right away.

Mike (chi)

Rondo seems to be left out of the equation in the talk of best PGs, but i think he is extremely talented, albeit in a different sense than rose. think he'll come back with a vengeance after not making the worlds

Nick Friedell
  (2:06 PM)

Agreed, I think Rondo will have a big year. But if I had to choose either Rose or Rondo, I would take Rose. He is younger, his shot is getting better and I think he has more all-around talent.

Corey B (Brookfield, IL)

Biggest suprise of camp?

Nick Friedell
  (2:07 PM)

The food in the media room isn't absolutely terrible anymore.

Disco (Chicago)

Do you see any Central teams giving the Bulls a run for the division?

Nick Friedell
  (2:08 PM)

Milwaukee. If another team wins the Central, it will be the Bucks. Those games are going to be a lot of fun to watch this year. Seriously.

Ryan (Oak Park)

What position would the Bulls like use that last roster spot on?

Nick Friedell
  (2:09 PM)

I think they are out there searching for another point guard right now.

Scott (Chicago)

The Bulls are often referred to as "Jazz East", partly because of their personnel, but also because of their standing in the middle of their respective conferences. Given the upcoming CBA issues and the core locked up what can the Bulls do to become a true championship team?

Nick Friedell
  (2:13 PM)

All they can do is hope that someone will take Deng's deal and they can land another star to go alongside Rose. That probably isn't going to happen though. Unless Rose elevates his game even quicker than he already has, I think the Bulls will be stuck in the 3-5 slot in the East for several years to come.

Sufi (NY NY)

What are the Bulls looking to get out of their last pre-season game tonight?

Nick Friedell
  (2:13 PM)

Keep everybody healthy.

Danny (Chicago, IL)

Why has Rose's elite athleticism not translated into more steals and better on-ball defense? Is Thib's starting to bring it out of him?

Nick Friedell
  (2:15 PM)

Yes, he is. Rose has noted several times the last few days that Thibs barely speaks to him about his offense. One of the Thibs' biggest goals was to get Derrick to become a better defender this year. I think you'll slowly start to see that progression happen as this season progresses.

Jason (Bloomington)

If we are a a big time scorer away from being a legitimate contender that where is that going to come from? No, Melo, Bron, Wade, Johnson,etc..

Nick Friedell
  (2:15 PM)

When you figure out the answer to that question call Gar Forman.

Hula (Old Town, Chi)

Have you heard a better nickname than Omerasik Park yet?

Nick Friedell
  (2:17 PM)

That's good, but you're butchering the pronunciation of his last name. It's A-Sheek.

Shep (Romeoville)

This might sound silly, but once and for all, will you PLEASE clarify how to say the TH in Thibodeau?

Nick Friedell
  (2:17 PM)

Just remember -- the H is not silent. It's THIB-o-dough

Jordan's Shadow (UC)

I know we all love the idea of Rose having a 3 point shot but what about the idea of getting to line more and drawing contact? Has the coaching staff or even Rose acknowledge that it's something he needs to work on?

Nick Friedell
  (2:21 PM)

They've been talking to him about that over the summer. I think the prevailing feeling is that if Rose continues to push the action and draw contact he will start to get some of the calls he hasn't gotten in the past couple of years.

Jake (FL)

How do you pronounce Boozer? Oh right, its in-jer-ee

Nick Friedell
  (2:21 PM)

That's just cold, Jake. But creative nonetheless.

Rey (Northwest Indiana)

How do the Bulls avoid the notorious slow start they always seem to have to dig out of? Especially without Booze.

Nick Friedell
  (2:23 PM)

The sad truth for Bulls fans is they probably won't. Without Boozer, I think they go 2-5 on the circus trip. They have to just tread water while they wait for him to return.

Andrew (Phoenix)

Nick, greetings from the Southwest. Even with the concern at the Guard position, do you think that the Bulls still need more help at the post even when Boozer comes back? Just seems that Noah could be used better at F, and bring someone bigger at C. What do you think?

Nick Friedell
  (2:24 PM)

I think they feel confident in having Thomas, Gibson and Asik coming off the bench. I know people keep asking about Dampier, but I don't think he is coming to Chicago any time soon.

john (arizona)

is deng truly the x-factor this year?

Nick Friedell
  (2:24 PM)

Isn't he always the X-factor?

Sean A (Chicago)

Hey Nick would this be a good trade? To Bulls: Carmelo AnthonyTo Nuggets: Carl Landry (or Jason Thompson), Omri Casspi, James Johnson and PicksTo Kings: Luol Deng, Taj Gibson and Cash

Nick Friedell
  (2:25 PM)

It would a great trade ... if your name was Gar Forman. That deal isn't going to happen though.

Nick Friedell
  (2:26 PM)

Al right, everybody -- great chat as usual. Talk to you guys next week. Get ready for the Rose/Durant showdown on Wednesday night.
