Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to another fantasy sports chat session. We're almost done Week 7 of the fantasy football season, so I'm guessing most of the questions will be pigskin related. I can also tackle baseball and hoops questions, if you like. Lots to get to, thanks for joining in today, and here we go...

Victor (Home)

Good Afternoon EK. After last night's game do you think Favre plays next week and even if he does is he worth starting? I have Flacco on bye next week so I'll need a fill-in. Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

I think Favre will play, and while I'm long past believing he will look like the 2009 version, he should be able to deliver decent numbers against the Patriots in Week 8. I can't imagine there's much on free agency in your league. Would you really add and use Ryan Fitzpatrick over Favre? I don't think I could do that.

Darius (Buffalo)

Is Steve Johnson legit? Or is he nothing more than a bye week fill in?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

Five touchdowns in four games looks legit to me. Plus, the Bills have allowed 30 points in four straight games, which probably won't stop anytime soon. Fitzpatrick has to throw. And Lee Evans isn't his main guy, it's Steve Johnson. Might be the top WR pickup this week after Britt. Certainly should be over Shipley.

Danny (Chicago)

Take your pick: D. Woodhead vs MIN or S. Homes vs GB at WR next week???

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

Let's finish this week, shall we! I can't say I'd use Danny boy against the Vikings... he's not getting enough touches. I'd go Santonio.

Jamie (Boston)

Is Torain a weekly starter now? Or still a matchup play? Detroit coming up this week

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

With consecutive 100-yard games, I'd say I am sold on him. If you own Portis, don't rely on his return.

Lance (Newark )

Should I cut Shonne Grenne for Legarret Blount?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

No, I can't say I would do that. I like Greene, think he will have major value in the second half. I like Blount as well, but Greene could be something special, a top 10 guy. I don't see a TB running back doing that.

Brett (Pittsburgh)

Which QB for the rest of the season? Fitzpatrick, Cutler, Farve, Henne, Stafford, Hasselbeck, Freeman, Cassel, Moore or Campbell.

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Wow, wanna name anyone else? Tarkenton, Moon or Jaworski maybe? I'm saying Farve, still. Then Cutler. But Stafford is right there. I believe.

Leo (los angeles)

EK, I had 148 bench points this week! (.5 PPR) by leaving out McFadden, Britt, Ward, and Flacco. Going forward what should I think of Britt and Brandon Lloyd?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

As I wrote in my first blog today, there's no shame in having sat Britt this week. I didn't use him. For one, he was benched the first quarter, and two, it's Kerry Collins at QB! Don't feel bad! That said, Britt and Lloyd are both reasonable options moving ahead. So is McFadden.

Raffi (Chicago)

Do you know the status of Hakeem Nicks? I heard his hamstring is still fatigued. I'm up 8 and I could plug in Dez. My opponent has the annoying Roy Williams.

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Williams is annoying, isn't he? He'd been so bad for more than a year, who expected this? I think Nicks is playing, but I'm not his doctor. I hope he plays. Bryant isn't a bad play, though. Wait until just before gametime and see.

Eric (Arizona)

Can the panthers o-line help deangelo williams? or is it time to trade him for someone like beanie wells?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

DeAngelo is hurt now, and I'm thisclose to saying trade for Jonathan Stewart. Can't be all about the bad line. Maybe it was DeAngelo. I like Beanie moving forward, but still not as much as DeAngelo.

Andy (Syracuse, NY)

Any thoughts on Lynch going forward? He had an even better game than his first week with the seahawks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

No surprises. He's getting touches, and he's more than a reasonable flex play, maybe a RB2 in a lot of leagues. Buy low.

Ben (NY)

Down by 25...I have Romo, Felix, Witten and Jacobs all I winning?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Oooh, I do like these! Yes, you are winning! Romo might get close to 25 by himself. I have Eli Manning on so many teams, so I need a big game from him tonight. I see a 31-28 type game.

Doug (Dallas)

So as a Forte owner, am I screwed fro the rest of the year as long as Cutler is QB?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

Oh, I don't think it's all Jay's fault. It's the line. No QB can do much without proper protection. Forte has struggled to run the ball even when Cutler was playing well and had time to throw. But I wouldn't call Forte more than a flex/RB3 at this point.

Keith (Albany)

got offered Peyton Hillis and Steve Smith for MJD, has Hillis passed MJD this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

I wouldn't take Hillis over Jones-Drew, but Hillis is a nice RB2, and getting either Smith would make it interesting. Sure!

FS (Chicago)

EK. First and foremost, you and Christopher Harris get me in the playoffs every year and a championship 2 out of 5. Thank you for using your brain more than your gut and always giving useful information. Even when you are wrong, it is usually something that most could not predict. Kudos to you man.

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Well thank you, that is a nice thing to write. We don't get positive reinforcement much in this business!

Eric (Indy)

Driver has had a subpar season so far, and not even 1 catch last night! Any reason why I shouldn't drop him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Sure, the reason to not drop him is this is an elite passing offense and Driver is normally very good. It's one bad game and he's hurting with a thigh injury. I wouldn't automatically sit him down, but I can't cut him.

late for a meeting (the fourth floor)

i'm up two, with the giants d tonight. he doesn't have anyone. should i bench the giants, just have an empty spot, or is that lame?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Winning is not lame. I'd sit the defense down. Four defenses had negative points Sunday. I don't think the Giants D will have a great game. That said, some will argue league stat changes could affect your result... but this is the safe play.

Jim (Stranton)

Up 1...I have Bradshaw going, he's done...bench Bradshaw?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

I'd be a bit more surprised if he gave you a negative performance. And one point is less than two, a scoring change is more likely to affect it.

Jones (NC)

Got to start two this week. Ryan Mathews, Brandon Jackson, or Chris Ivory

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Ivory didn't do much Sunday, did he? Sure, the Saints trailed... check out who they play this week! It's mighty Pitt!

Barry (Napa)

Should teams be required to field all positions each week, especially if they know that that player is on a bye?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

No, I wouldn't say that. I know people who didn't replace a defense this week because they didn't want to cut the Jets and had no bench space.

Steve (Boston)

Mathews owner....Time to bail?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Well, I can't say he won't do anything all season, but I'm done recommending him until we see something.

Y.O. (DC)

Kolb was just dropped in my league. Should I pick him up and drop Greg Olsen?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I don't think we'll see Kolb play for a few weeks, if at all anytime soon. Vick is starting now. Of course, Olsen isn't doing much. I don't see much need to own either of these players.

Jones (NC)

Is Addai's injury as serious as I am hearing? Should I trade him? Is so for who, would Hart or Brown be the best options?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Addai has a shoulder problem, could miss the Week 8 game. Or he might play. The Colts aren't really saying. But I doubt you can trade an injured player for much. And I say Hart over Brown, but neither is likely to do much.

Mo (Chicago)

EK: Can you spit some knowledge on how to value DMC these days? I'm receiving trade offers left and right!

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

I'd move McFadden, but the fact is he could be a top 10 running back. I wouldn't give him away.

David (WV)

Continuing with the "should I bench this guy cuz I'm winning" questions, any chance Steve Smith has -30 yards receiving or 15 fumbles and no yards? But seriously, what is your thought on holding onto Collie?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

LOL! Now that would be a tough night for Smith, eh? I think you have to keep Collie around. He might miss Week 8, but then again, he might not. It's an elite passing offense with injuries.

Jeff (PA)

Is Roddy White the #1 WR from here on out?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I could easily make the case White is fantasy's top wide receiver. He's consistent and has big games... how often does he deliver a nothing game?

Defense Sitting (Seriously)

How can you justify sitting a postion? As commish..I would ding you 10 points for that. Its bus league...and shouldn't be allowed

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Why? If someone can make the point, I'm listening...

Mike (Tempe)

Would it be stupid to start both T. Jones and Charles in any given week? I always start the wrong guy and my bench player blows up!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

I'm pondering ranking both Chiefs RBs in the top 10 this week. No, really.

Taylor (Birmingham, AL)

Would you trade Dwayne Bowe for Knowshon Moreno?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Yes, I absolutely would. And I'm not the biggest Moreno fan.

Brees is driving me crazy with all these ints, would you start Matt Ryan over Brees this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Nope. Brees did have 14 fantasy points. Could have been a lot worse. But mostly I'd use Brees because Ryan is on bye. But I think the overall point stands...

KC (Cbus)

EK-Ah, what to make of Fitz? Is the Cards QB situation the worst you've ever seen? I'm not even mad I just feel bad for the guy.

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

I agree. I mean, Max Hall is nothing special, but for him to be that bad... Anderson is that bad. I think Hall will find Fitz in Week 8. They are playing!

Joe (Decatur, GA)

If the Daily Show is the Panthers starting RB for a few weeks, who do you think nets me the most in a trade: Stewart, Torain or Felix Jones?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Probably Torain. Seems like everyone loves the guy now.

Scott (Denver)

Better RB -- Blount or Ivory?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Blount. Bucs have little reason to re-incorporate Cadillac Williams. Saints have every reason to use Thomas and Bush and anyone doing anything...

Terry (Silver Springs)

Is the Ray Rice/McGahee platoon a sign of things to come?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Other than Week 6, I'd argue nothing has changed. And it's not really a platoon.

Joel (CT )

would you rather have Gore or Mendenhall rest of season, non-ppr?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

Gore. But both are top 10, and I think easily.

Mike (Detroit)

How high is Mike Williams (Sea) now? Top 20 WR?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

No. I wouldn't go that far. I'd still prefer the TB Mike Williams, but both are top 30.

Defense Sitting (Rebuttal)

If you allow in your league to have negative points, I think it obvious that strategy might dictate sitting a defense. Coaches don't call plays near the end of the game, because they won the game. No need to risk a fumble a return for 6, or in FF a -3 point Defense.

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Haven't seen any good responses on why it's wrong to do this yet... guess there aren't any. Saying just "it's wrong" doesn't cut it! If it's legal and you can win, go for it...

Mike (New York)

Is Gore that high even with Carr starting? Still Top 10?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Well, it's not like Alex Smith was Peyton Manning, ya know. I like Gore a bit less... but still probably top 5.

Defense Sitting (Seriously)

So I guess you would endorse picking up and dumping players to mess with the waiver....same premise to me.

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Doesn't seem like the same premise to me. Only one of those affects actual points.

Brett (TX)

Schefter just tweeted that Favre is in a walking boot with evulsion fracture and stress fracture - still like him over Fitz or is that something he's gonna play through?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Well, that would obviously adjust things a bit. Tar-var-is!

Dan (Philly)

Is it time to drop the Baltimore defense for good?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Single digits every week... on bye this week, can't make much of a case to keep them around.

DJ (New Orleans)

Tarvaris a decent fantasy pickup?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

No, I don't think I can use the word "decent."

Eric (Milwaukee)

What's all these questions implying DWill will be out for weeks? I thought it was just a minor foot injury.

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Because it's fantasy football and everyone overreacts. I hadn't heard DeAngelo would miss any games, frankly.

Matt (Philly)

How do you feel about taking out the K position? Christopher Harris is in favor of this. I would just hate to own a team that lost because of Barth or Carpenter.

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Totally agree. Just an annoying position to deal with in fantasy. And I would never ever roster 2 kickers. Yours on bye this week...cut him.

Sal (PA)

Should Brady owners be concerned about his performance yesterday. It was less than stellar. Woudl going with Cassel or Bradford next week be overreacting?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Yes, I would say so.

Kelly (Brooklyn)

Would Tavaris Jackson starting effect Moss or harvin's value?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

It won't help, but then again these guys are talented, and if they want to play well, they can. And Tarvaris isn't some Max Hall rookie.

Blake (Chicago)

Haha, thanks for indirectly answering my question about Tavaris vs. Max Hall

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

I would take Tarvaris. But I don't have to feel good about it! Plus, let's not assume Favre is out. You know he loves the attention...

Mike (Pittsburgh)

Portis might not be featured when he comes back, but he has to eat into Torain's 20 carries, right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

I don't think it's assured that Portis cuts into Torain's touches by any means. Redskins have their RB now, why sit him?

Brian (Desk)

What is your opinion of a guy who is going to lose this week droping the Dallas kicker and going with no kicker tonight?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

No problem from me. In one of my leagues I drop my kicker every Tuesday for the hot pickup, then deal with my kicker slot Sunday morning.

Full Roster Argument (Commish - NY)

Our league states you must field a full lineup to earn points. So sitting a D and leaving a blank spot will earn you zero points for your team for the week. Starting a Defense on a BYE is a different story. You must be careful here as this is really to encourage teams to put a full team on the field each week even when they are out of it. I think the negative point argument is valid though.

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Obviously whatever rules your league uses trump this... but in standard leagues it works.

Kyle Orton (Hiding)

Any risk of me losing playing time to Tebow if Denver's season falls apart?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

Absolutely. And I'm guessing that would mess up a lot of fantasy teams. How could the Broncos give up 59 points? Explain this to me. Unreal.

kevin (jersey)

DWill is in his contract year. Bad season so far. Panthers gonna lean on Jstew more in 2nd half?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Only if DeAngelo is hurt. This team knows it has good running backs, so no need to showcase either. It's about the future QB.

Matthew C (Dallas)

Eric! Hey man, what the heck happenned to Mendenhall yesterday? Time to panic??

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

No worries here. Mendenhall was at 15 or more fantasy points all but one week. I think we can give him a pass.

Jeff (Oklahoma)

Austin started off so hot, but has been lackluster lately. Time to deal him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Miles Austin? Let's let him play tonight first, ok! He'll be fine.

Matt (Dallas)

Eric, your top 5 rb's for the rest of the fantasy season??

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Peterson, Johnson, MJD, Gore and .... Foster!

Stuart (NYC)

BASEBALL - what is next for the Phillies? Who is gonna play RF?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Ugh. I'll say a Dom Brown- Ben Francisco RF platoon, and an Ibanez-Marcus Thames LF platoon!

Aaron (Baton Rouge)

Would LOVE to have this explained to me. Why do pick sixes count against that particular defenses fantasy point total... Saints. Case in point.

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Beats me. Doesn't seem right. But I didn't invent the game!

Full Roster Fight (Cali)

The reason i think its stupid to leave the spot open is because the ultimate tie breaker is overall points. While a good defense getting negative is possible, so is losing a week 1 playoff bye becasue you lose the tie-breaker in overall points.

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Fair point. But to me, worry about tiebreakers if you get there. It's the same as not using your best pitcher to get past the first round of the playoffs, saving him for round 2...

nick (work)

is it time to sell high on jahvid best? I know the lions will be fighting til the end but its whether or not hell produce

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Do you really think you can still sell high? He hasn't scored since about 2005. Or Week 2.

Chris (Waterbury)

I just don't understand the MJD love still. The offense looks atrocious, and he doesn't look like the same explosive player. Rice has gotta be ahead of him.

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

If anything, I should remove MJD and Rice from the top 5. Point taken though. If I thought it over I probably would put Steven Jax in there over MJD now.

Jason (Ellicott City, MD)

How bad do you think Bud Selig hates his life with neither NYY or PHI in the WS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

No comment. But I think this will be a terrific World Series... it's kinda nice to see two no-name teams make it.

Chad (St. Paul)

SJax just had surgery on his ring finger - could miss a week or so

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

And the fun just keeps on coming!

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK, that is about all for our time today. Thank you so much for showing up and sending thousands of questions. Hope you enjoyed it. I'll be back chatting on Wednesday, same time. Good luck on Monday night!
