Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:01 PM)

Greetings all. Thanks so much for coming by.

Matt (Baltimore)

Do you consider the Jags 2008 draft to be one of the worst in NFL history? I find it hard to imagine one worse.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:03 PM)

I saw that Alfie Crow made a nice case for it. I'm not a draft historian, I am sure there have been plenty of classes that have washed out. That's a really bad one, obviously.

Jim Caldwell (Indianapolis)

Pete Kuharsky, I noticed a "tweak" in your latest column. What can you tell us about it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

There is no tweak and we hope to stay on schedules with columns in a regular fashion. (That was not popular in all circles.)

Matthew (Baltimore)

Regarding hard hits on defenseless receivers, JDR commented that, during his playing days, that stopping hard hits was a responsibility of the QB to not hang his receiver out to dry, and on the receiver to know how to sit down in a zone rather than run through it. What are your thoughts on this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:04 PM)

An underplayed angle. I think it happened on the Kolb-Jackson play. Young QB, young WR, bad play put him in a bad spot.

Will L (Titanville TN)

Hey im an avid titans fan and I read alot of your columns on the AFC south. As an expert, why has our pass rush slowed down? Jason Jones is a monster in the middle and is underrated by most people, why are our DE's not getting as much pressure? Thanks for answering!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:05 PM)

Did you think they were going to get five or six a game all season?

Graig (Indy)

Paul, I know the Power Rankings are just fodder for discussion and the results shouldn't bother me, however I just cannot understand how you rank Houston ahead of the Giants. Remember when they played in Houston and the Giants dominated? Remember when the Giants hadn't lost a game since? Remember when Houston struggled against Kansas City (much like the Giants against Detroit)? Taking that into account, can you explain your ranking?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:08 PM)

Off the one win, I couldn't move the Giants up monumentally and I had them down in low teens at one point, I believe. I'd expect them to get close and closer together, and when they reach a certain proximity and there is a head to head, I generally flip them. Let's keep in mind the four wins include one good opponent, Houston. Chicago, Detroit and Dallas don't earn you monster points. Philly game will tell me a lot.

Anthony (Nashville)

It seems just about every losing opponent of the Titans states that they "beat themselves." This is an annoying trend this year in the NFL to not give credit to the opponent. Why not give credit were credit is due? The aggressive teams force those mistakes.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

Ask the Titans to look in the mirror on that one, Chief. Didn't you hear them after Pittsburgh? The Titans say it like everyone says it. Teams rarely get beat. They always beat themselves. And the Titans are as guilty of it as anyone.

Anthony (Cleveland)

What is your impression of the QB situation for the Titans? Is Fisher just looking for an excuse not to play VY this Sunday? I get the feeling that he might try to sit him because of a hang nail.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:09 PM)

He can get a two-for-one here. A guarantee of a healthy VY after another week off and a bye and a better chance against the Chargers since VY's struggled against them. Too early to say which way it goes, though.

Marcos Semensato (São Paulo)

In Power Rankings week 8 you put Colts at number 8. Titans and Texans ahead of them. You are the only of the 4 voters who put both teams as better than Indy. Do you really think that Indy is the third best team in division right, now? Regards.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

I said the case could be made for any order. But the Titans recent excellent play and the Texans head to head win had me put them Titans, Texans, Colts back-to-back-to-back. Things will become far more clear Monday night.

Mark (Austin, TX)

How much of McCourty (as opposed to Verner) do you expect to see this weekend against the Chargers?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:11 PM)

None.

Brandon (TX)

How big is the Colts injury to Dallas Clark? Can they beat the Texans without him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

Outside of Manning and Freeney, I don't know that I'd call the loss of any player devastating, considering how this team has dealt with injuries. Stay tuned for a video on your specific question tomorrow.

Jenn Sterger (New York)

I'm considering talking to you.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:12 PM)

I am available to be spoken to.

Drew (Louisville, KY)

Paul, you never seem to answer my questions. Can you tell me why that is? Thanks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:13 PM)

Consider the problem solved.

Dustin (Stanford CA)

Hey Paul, All offseason you were saying of alot of young defensive players had to stepup at the same time for the Titans D to be decent. Which young guys have and have not stepped up?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:14 PM)

Jason Jones and Alterraun Verner have been excellent. I don't know that Gerald McRath has been what they expected yet. Hard to say too much yet on Sen'Derrick Marks.

VY (Nashville)

Hey Paul - why did you refer to me as garbage on the radio this morning?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:15 PM)

Apologies and I corrected myself. I was responding to one of those listener trade scenarios where people say hey, why don't we give away a player who isn't panning out the way we expected for one who's probably got more upside.

Homer (Springfield, USA)

Don't you hate pants?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:16 PM)

I prefer shorts by a lot.

David (Jacksonville Florida)

Hi Paul. The RTC link regarding the disastrous 2008 Jags draft gives an indication to why they are struggling on the field today. If these regime gets it right, how many drafts will it take to make the Jags a more competitive team ? I knew the defense was going to bad this year but I thought the offense may show some improvement. There are glaring holes on both sides of the ball.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:17 PM)

Too long at current pace. But it should speed up if they find the right quarterback.

Blake (Bay City, TX)

Paul, i know that you feel that Addai is one of the best blocking backs in the league. With him out do you see the Texans sending blitz packages to the RB more often, or will they just have to keep back and play the pass? thanks

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

Good question. As weak as they are in coverage, can they afford to blitz? High risk, high reward, usually. But Manning finds guys against pressure.

Dave (Jax)

What are the chances that Trent Edwards is the QB for Jax next year and the Jags finally draft a QB for the future ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:18 PM)

They definitely draft one. Whether Edwards is a mentor who eases him in remains to be seen.

Andrew (Baltimore)

What's your early thought on the Colts first round pick, first positionally and then a name or two if you got them. I know you're not Mel Kiper, but what do you see as the most glaring need at the moment (assume, for the sake of argument, the Colts will be picking in their traditional position of mid-to-late 20s/30-32).

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:19 PM)

I am completely against draft questions in October and completed for the Colts adding a stud offensive lineman.

Karen (Nashville )

What happens when you have a rookie (i.e Myron Rolle) that signs a big contract but then doesn't make the team and ends up on the practice squard? Do they just sign another contract at lower money?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:20 PM)

Well a guy like Rolle didn't get a big contract. But once you're cut, the contract is gone. You sign to the practice squad under different terms, good pay, but hardly NFL roster minimum salary.

Jason (Jacksonvile)

So who do you see as viable coaching replacements for Jacksonville? It's quite obvious by now Garrards on his last leg with the Jags this year and they will draft "the man" in April.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:21 PM)

Look to Connecticut.

Chris Matthews (Leg tingling heaven)

What channel does the Titans keep the tv's on at Baptist Park... MSNBC, FoxNews, or Lifetime

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:22 PM)

A small station that broadcasts from Bristol, CT which also pays my salary and supports this chat platform.

Tyler (Centreville Virginia)

Paul, What degree did you earn in college and what college. I drool over having a job like yours as an undeclared college student.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:23 PM)

Be broad early, not narrow is my advice. Emphasize liberal arts and English. My undergrad degree is in political science.

Jay Cutler (Nashville)

Don't come near me at Steeple Chase.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

Saw Aaron Rodgers at last Steeplechase I will ever attend, and he was completely cool.

John L (Knoxville TN)

I know its early to think about draft but with the improvement of the titans defense, do you think they should look for offense in the next draft? maybe trade down for an interior o-lineman to replace the hole that kevin mawae left?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:24 PM)

They let him go so they could play a guy on their bench they love, so they didn't think they were creating a hole. It's absolutely silly to talk needs and draft right now.

Ed (Arkansas)

What's the story with Steve Slayton? How does one go from one of the most dynamic rookie RB's in the league to third on the depth chart in the space of two years barring some debilitating injury which, unless it's being hidden, hasn't happened? I realize there were fumble problems last year, but there are ways to fix that, and they were present during the rookie year either. What changed?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:25 PM)

Mostly it's Foster being so good. I'm scheduled to talk to Matt Schaub right when we finish up, and Slaton is a guy we will talk about.

Matt (Baltimore)

Considering they got something for Reggie Nelson, do you think the Jags could get something for Harvey if he doesn't respond to his benching?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:26 PM)

Gene Smith's gotten something for nothing with Groves, Nelson and A. Smith. So I wouldn't put it past him except for one thing -- the trade deadline is past.

Chris Johnson (Nashville)

Do you think that I can break loose after having a few modest games like last year and get another 2,000?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:27 PM)

I suspect you will break lose and run for between 1,400 and 1,500. A very good season.

Chris (Myrtle Beach, SC)

Do you believe A. Gonzalez is truly healthy and going to play? Or do you feel Blair White will be the starter even if Gonzalez is listed as questionable?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

If they start in two-wides, two-tight, Gonzo and White will both be on the sideline. I expect Gonzo, based on what he said, to play and be third.

Anthony (Nashville)

You said 1 team from the AFC South would make the playoffs. How is Baltimore a "lock"? This is the team that had to go to overtime to beat the Bills. No team has looked like a lock except the Steelers and Jets. Also, when do the Titans start worrying about their AFC record for tiebreaking? Why can't they their losses ever be to the NFC?!?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:28 PM)

I think the Ravens are very good and will go to the playoffs. I won't be surprised if they overtake Pittsburgh in the North,

Fisher's Stache (South of the Nasal region)

So...what happened to all the three point games? Jeff knows I get my powers from field goal driven contests, yet these have all been blowouts. I am starting to lose my sheen and magnificent bushyness.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

Times, and styles, change.

Matt (Baltimore)

By "Look to Connecticut" I hope you don't mean Ditka or Edwards.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

I don't.

Barack Obama (Washington DC)

Pete Kuharsky, I'm impressed by your degree in Political Science and wish to extend to you a position in my cabinet. If you still need a football fix I can arrange for you to cover the Redskins.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:29 PM)

Can I be "Commissioner of Nashville" and remain here? Will there be a badge?

mag (sea)

Paul, love your blogs. Is it me or the Colts ownership and mgmt are throwing Peyton's career away by not surrounding him with a good defense? What does Bill Polian need to do better to ensure they atleast get another ring before Peyton rides off to sunset? As a colts fan, I am frustrated by lack of good personnel and execution on special teams and Defense (not counting Freeney and Mathis)

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

Manning is far from sunset. You should also be counting Gary Brackett and Antoine Bethea. That's four big time players on defense. This group had a lot of other talent too. I am surprised it has not played better.

Ed (Texas)

Does it make sense, that the Texans play the Colts so early in the season, while the Titans play them very late? It probably depends on whether or when the Colts have a playoff spot locked up, but wouldn't it make more sense to try distribute the schedule a bit better?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:31 PM)

I think the division game schedule is a joke. They need to make a rule that you cannot play the same team twice inside six weeks.

Micheal Griffin (Titan's practice field)

So i know i have been pretty great this year (which is good because after my hidden injury last year i was worried about getting benched), if you had to pick an MVP on both sides of the ball for the titans, would i be on it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

Titans defensive MVP right now is a tough call between you and a Ball/Babin combo. You've been quite good. Hope you saw the piece I did on you last week.

Simon Kuharsky (Beer Run)

Told you Cliff Lee isn't unhittable, pops.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:33 PM)

We agree on that kiddo. He'd still look good in pinstripes. By the way, you have a TV in that crib or what?

Chancellor Williams (Vanderbilt)

We just signed U2 to come to Vanderbilt. 10x better than that 80 year old favorite of yours.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

I've got tickets already and fully expect to see you walking around in a sweatsuit or something even less dressy if you can find it. I don't know that Bruce has control of his birthday. But the fellas in U2 would be among the first to tell you he puts on a show as good as anyone.

Cliff Lee's wife (Texas)

No chance he's signing with the Yankees. Did you see the way they treated me in NYC?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

Didn't you see what he said about it? It's not like the two fans a) knew who she was or b) were representing the team or city in a campaign to lure you.

mag (sea)

paul, thanks for answering my question about Colts defense; I still think they can play better. Its so easy to run and pass against them. Do you see them beating Steelers/Pats/Jets should they get to the playoffs? I think those teams are vastly superior to the Colts except for Quarterback play.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

right now I don't feel like Colts, Texans or Titans are in class of Pittsburgh, Baltimore or the Jets. Not sure which group I put the Pats in.

Greg (Houston)

What do you think of Cushing's move to MLB?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

I think it's the right move considering their other options. But they are going to miss him on the outside.

Bono (Dublin)

How did you get tickets? They aren't even on sale yet?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:38 PM)

C'mon Chief. Surely you know about presales?

Keivn (Louisiana)

Is Hope becomeing a liability in the secondary? Would they ever considering benching him... He was beat last week but the wind helped him catch up to the ball and the interception flub was pretty terrible as you are taught in pop warner to get the ball at it's highest point

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

I think he's actually been pretty good overall. Better than last season.

Ryan (Indiana)

Angerer recorded a lot tackles aginst Washington and the Colts mgt doesn't put a lot of stock in that stat anyway. So is it his ability in pass coverage that is keeping him from playing more?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

It's Brackett that's keeping him out. He'd have to get the nod over Wheeler and I don't think they view him as a strongside guy, at least not right now.

Jake (Lafayette, IN)

Why is there so much uncertainty around Gonzo? He has been back at practice since the week before the Washington game, and has not re-tweaked anything. He had a catastrophic injury that sidelined him last year that couldn't have been prevented, and his High Ankle Sprain happened when he got taken out by 2-250 lbs. linebackers while blocking and got twisted around by the hit. He's all of 190 lbs. He's small, not fragile.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

He's gotten hurt and missed a lot of time. Unlucky or not, people react to the missed games.

Nate (Bay Minette, AL)

Its 2:39pm.. and I'm sippin' some Makers Mark. To early?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Not for a retired guy.

Chuck Cecil (Nashville)

How much do you think I would be fined had these new hit rules been in place when I was making a mess of people all over the field?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

As you told me when I asked you about the new enforcement/ punishment, you are all about player safety. I mean, what can you say now? You would have been fined a lot.

Scott (Nashville)

What's the word on Donald Brown for Monday night?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Attention Colts faithful. They'll put out an injury report in a bit and that will be the first official word on pertinent injuries since they made status determinations before their last game. I will tweet it as soon as I get it.

Matt (New York)

Do you think the Patriots are true Super Bowl contenders?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

I do.

Brad Pitt (Pilates)

Pete, I've seen some tape and think with a little taking under my wing you could be leading man material in 12 years.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

I can act. Everyone can act. It's called pretending.

Teddy (Nashville)

I miss the Nashville Banner.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Why?

Luke (Indianapolis, IN)

Whats your take on the play of Aaron Francisco? Has he held up his own as the the string safety behind sanders and bullit?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

I think he's done well. That pick at the end of the Skins game was fantastic.

Scott (Nashville)

What is your honest opinion of Josh McDaniels?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

I think he is terrible and doomed.

Andrew (Baltimore)

Speaking of the schedule, if the NFL adopted an 18-game schedule in the distant or not-so-distant future, how would it be constructed? The symmetry of the current system is beautiful and fairly even (except for whoever draws the AFC/NFC West, but they rotate every four years). How will the screw it up by adding two games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:48 PM)

I would set up another cross-conference rotation. I would hate to see any of these BS geographic rival concepts put into play to unbalance it.

Brian (The Boro)

Does it look like VY will be back this weekend? And lets just say you have the ability to pick the starter, do you go with Vince or Kerry? and No I am not saying their is or will be a QB controversy. Just interested in your thinking now that we have seen them both this year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

If Young can move around OK, he should play.

Glenn (Minny)

I hope you're hungry, Paul. The crow down in Nashville is getting bigger and bigger.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

I guess you are referring to my prediction. If the Titans post a good record and/or go to the playoffs, I will hardly be the first analyst to miss on a prediction. You understand that unpredictability is the thing, above all else, that make the NFL so popular, yes?

marinejld (earth)

Jeff Fisher's name is being mentioned a lot as the next possible coach in Dallas. Do you really think there is a chance that Jeff leaves for that job or any other after this season? --------> Saw this in the "comments" section below....I think its a stupid question but thought I would post to see your smart answer :) Chief.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

I love people who think anyone can go anywhere. He's under contract with the Titans through 2011. He can't just leave.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

On my shuffle right now, "Indianapolis" by The Bottle Rockets. Not complimentary to your fine city. But catchy.

Nate (Bay Minette, AL)

Is Harvey's demotion in Jacksonville just further proof that JDR has lost the team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

No.

Bill (Nashville)

I know you are a big college football fan. Don't you think it would make sense for Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech to switch conferences.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

No.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

No.

Nate (Bay Minette, AL)

Wait... did you just make the argument that coaching contracts mean something? Bobby Petrino begs to differ.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Did he go NFL to NFL?

MJ (Boston)

did you see the NFL's list of the top 100 players...they put Kurt Warner ahead of guys like Michael Irvin, Larry Allen and Joe Namath? Who was the panel? That's the funniest thing i've seen in awhile...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

No matter the list, someone's upset. Lists create conversation. This one just did so here, right?

Little Jimmy Dickens (Brentwood, TN)

Why don't I ever see you out at the Opry, Chief?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Not my style. And I am in my 40s, not my 80s. But on you, those rhinestones look good.

marinejld (earth)

If there is a lockout - how does this affect the coaches & their staff? I've read about 50% pay but what about their staff? Are the contracts for coaches and their staff still good?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

Most coaaches under contract have some sort of reductions built in.

Tim Grahm (Wizardry)

I've got the Pats and Jets, chief. You can't hang!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

I enjoyed the Super Bowl last year where I considered you my assistant for the week.

James (Indy)

Steelers best team in the league right now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

I believe so.

Snooki (Taco Bell)

When will "Big Mike" Heimerdinger finally get a head coaching job in this league?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

I see him coaching the Bears next season.

Rex Ryan (Buffet Table)

Let's go get a %&(%$($ snack!!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

Seems the perfect way to say thanks for coming, hope to see you next week.
