Hello all and welcome to another live chat! Thanks for joining me today. Now on to the questions.
who will you have in the BCS championship if Auburn,Oregon,Boise all go undefeated? my Auburn team got left out before
If those three go undefeated, then Auburn and Oregon play for the national championship.
Andrea,Could you enlighten us as to how you've given the nod to a 4-3 Rutgers team and a 4-3 South Florida team and not a 5-2 Syracuse team? South Florida lost at home to Cuse (Cuse also won @ WVU). Rutgers has struggled to pull off its 4 wins against subpar competition. Was this just an oversight?
Paul, This is the most popular question I have received all week. I was on Syracuse radio answering the same question. The bowl projections are meant to figure out who I think will be in bowls at the end of the year. Not right now. That being said, they change each week. I had Syracuse in two weeks ago, and then the Orange lost to Pittsburgh. Last week was a big win, yes, but they still need two more. I guess I am putting more stock in that Pittsburgh loss. Is that the team that is going to show up? It's not easy winning at Cincy and at Rutgers. I did make this pick before word about Collaros' injury, and I think that could make a difference. But the Cuse has struggled vs. good passing teams. I am just not sure what to make of them or the rest of the Big East. I can probably guess that my Big East projections will change every week from now until the end of the season because the league is so muddled and unpredictable right now.
Hi Andrea, When the WAC's top teams within the conference have been discussed, Boise State, Nevada, and Fresno State's names come out first. When Hawaii has had a combined record of 8-2 against both Fresno and Nevada since 2006, wouldn't you say that Hawaii should be 2nd behind Boise?
Sure. I have Hawaii in my Top 25 power rankings this week. I think the reason Nevada has the nod in the BCS standings is the win over California. Not sure why it has the nod in the Harris poll.
While we TCU fans hope to win out and go to the MNC (mythical national championship) at the same time there is great concern that an undefeated TCU team may be left out in the cold and relegated to the Las Vegas or Poinsettia bowl once again in favor of 1 or 2 loss AQ teams. I know it is possible, but do you think it is likely?
It really all depends on what happens with Boise State and the other at-large teams. It is definitely possible. I am not sure how much the BCS wants to see two non-AQ teams back in BCS bowl games. If there are marquee teams from the Big Ten, Big 12, SEC or Pac-10 sitting out there and eligible, I would not be shocked if TCU is passed over.
Drea; out of the current teams in the top 10, which which would match up well against Boise in a possible NC GAME matchup, which team in the top 10 would not fair well against the Broncos in the NC GAME.
Alan, you are coming with the fastball tight and inside today. If you look at all the teams ranked in the Top 10, you can make a case that Boise State would have a chance to beat all of them on a neutral site. I think the Broncos would be able to score w/Oregon. I think they would be able to put up points on Auburn. I think they would be able to take advantage of the Alabama secondary. I think they are flat out better than Missouri, Michigan State, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. I think they would beat TCU and Utah, too.But of all those teams, I think Alabama matches up the best because they have the most balance on offense, and a solid defense.
Hi Andrea! The Hurricanes finally showed a pulse against North Carolina. Granted, this UNC squad was missing some key players, but Canes fans finally got a glimpse of this team's potential when they have balance on offense, their WRs fight for every ball, and the team plays 60 minutes of passionate football. Do you think they will build off this win and make it to the ACCCG?
Hi Phillip,Well, you know how it is with Miami. They give you these glimpses of hope and then ruin everything with a deflating loss. So I am not ready to put my stock back into Miami just yet. I mean that was a seriously deflated UNC team. That FSU game speaks more to me than that win. To get embarassed at home like that vs. your in-state rival is just inexcusable. I like Virginia Tech.
Who do you think will win this weekend in these two games Penn State vs. Michigan, and Ole Miss vs. Auburn? The Penn State Game is a White out game and Auburn is on the road as number one, and we have all seen what happened on the road to number one teams the last three weekends.
I am going to give the nod to Michigan based on the QB situation at Penn State. The Michigan D is bad, yes, but Penn State has all sorts of problems on offense, so that means the Michigan D might be able to make some stops. I know a lot of people are going with an Ole Miss upset, but I just don't see how the Rebels slow down the Cam Man.
I'm very tired of hearing TCU and Boise play 2-3 game schedules. No top 5 team should lose to a team ranked outside of the top 50 so what does that matter if they are 75th or 115th? Also, TCU and Boise have to beat EVERY team by at least 4 TDs every week in order to not fall in the rankings? Isn't that just as tiring as trying to just win every week?
Well I think you are going to be exhausted by season's end because that is just the way it is going to be, and will always be for the teams outside the power conferences. The perception and bias against them haven't changed, even when they do beat teams in BCS games and in the season. TCU beat Baylor 45-10, yet Baylor is the toast of Texas right now? Did I miss something?
Your bowl projection has Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and no SEC team in the NCG.Does this mean you believe Alabama will win the rest of their games and the SEC championship game? That's how I perceive your projection but the problem is a 12-1 Alabama team will easily make the NCG over Boise, imo.
DJ,It is tricky for me on that one, because on the one hand I think that Alabama is going to win the SEC and it makes sense to think that it would jump Boise State into the national title game, but I am not as convinced of that happening this year because Boise State is higher than it ever has been in the human polls. When one-loss teams have jumped Boise State before, the Broncos were in the 6-10 range. But they are No. 2 right now. Alabama really needs Penn State and Florida to step it up, too. That is going to weigh on strength of schedule. I am just taking a guess on that pick, the way I have all year. The truth is, none of us know for certain how it is all going to play out this year.
Andrea, I understand it's early and there's still a lot more to be learned, but can you think of a single scenario in which Brian Kelly SHOULD (not will) retain his job? It's unbelievably reckless to have sent someone up on that lift in those conditions.
I cannot speak to all the details about what happened yesterday, except to say it is an awful tragedy and I am saddened for the family of the young man and all those who knew him and love him. I send my condolences out to them. I think we need to wait and get all the details and all the facts before we start rushing to judgement. I know that may sound callous on the surface, but I would much rather know exactly what happened than to go on cloudy facts. I hope this answers your question, Todd in Des Moines.
Does Missouri have the D to stop the rushing attack of Nebraska? Do you think we see a repeat performance of the passing game from Taylor. That was a nice change!!! Thanks.
Hi Melissa,Thanks for joining again. I think Mizzou's D is vastly underrated, however, I think Nebraska wins the game. Martinez showed a really nice ability to get things done with his arm last week, and I think Missouri might be in danger of a letdown.
I'm a bit surprised by the reaction to BSU/LA Tech. LA Tech had 1st and 10 at the BSU 16 a couple plays after a fumble and came away with nothing. Later they had 1st and Goal at the 5 and then a 1st and Goal at the 8 - zero points in both. I suppose you could fault the defense for letting LA Tech get that close, but those are 3 really impressive series. That's what I took away from the game. Oh, and I noticed 2 UT transfers (both 4 star recruits) on the team - not exactly chopped liver.
Josh, I was not surprised. Maybe you saw my video from earlier in the week, but fans are not going to be impressed with any score that isn't 60-0 over WAC competition. There is the perception that every WAC team is horrendous, and that even a perfect Boise State is not in the same class as the mediocre teams in the power conferences.
Andrea, two questions... LSU chances of making a BCS game? and will Gary Crowton survive a another season as OC?
LSU's chances: slim to none. If Gary Crowton comes back, then the Hatter really is as mad as we think he is!
How good is Northern Illinois? Do you think they will make an apperance in the top 25 soon?
I think Northern Illinois is very good. Very impressed with Harnish this season. They have received 1 vote in each of the polls, but I think the only way they get into the Top 25 is if they win out.
"Roadblock Saturday"? Really? I thought we agreed to outlaw all weekdays with nicknames.
What's wrong, you didn't like 'MONSTERIFIC SATURDAY?' It has a nice ring to it.
Do you think Gameday will come to the Utah-TCU game?
I will probably find out the same time you do!
Thoughts on the exit plan for Fresno St. and Nevada from the WAC? Is this the deal breaker for MWC to become a BCS conference?
I think it really hurts the MWC, as I wrote in a blog post earlier this year. This is kind of like the trump card the WAC delivers for the MWC raiding them and ruining their BYU plans. But essentially, those two teams staying in the WAC thru 2011-12 means nothing they do in this four-year evaluation cycle would count toward the MWC's attempt at becoming AQ. With the loss of BYU, that hurts.
What is your response when people say that Utah beat Alabama in the 2008 Sugar Bowl because Alabama didn't care, were upset they weren't in the National Championship game, etc?
My response is that no matter what a non-AQ team does it is never going to be good enough. There is always a reason why the "power team" lost. Oklahoma lost because of a trick play. Alabama lost because it didn't care. On and on. Utah won that game and won it decisively. They deserve credit for it.
Who do you think will end up in the SEC title game and why?
I have got a rematch between Alabama vs. South Carolina. I think the Tide beats Auburn. I think South Carolina beats Florida to win the East. But I am much less certain of who is going to win the East. I may change my mind after this Florida-Georgia game. Very interested to see how that one plays out.
If TCU had beaten Boise in last year's Fiesta Bowl, do you think their current BCS standings would be reversed?
If unicorns had wings would they be magical? I really have no idea. My guess is that Boise State started the season ranked higher because it had almost its entire starting team back off that Fiesta Bowl winning team.
Ohio, you think the fighting frankies are the best team in the MAC?
Not quite. Still think Northern Illinois is the best, but looking forward to Ohio v. Temple on Nov. 16!
Since Boise St's score vs. La Tech was just about the same as Texas A&M's score vs. La Tech, how does this hurt Boise's BCS argument?
I don't think it does. But I wouldn't want to go and compare myself to A&M right about now. People expect Boise State to blow out any and all competition 60-0 and when that doesn't happen, then that obviously means they should be kicked down to I-AA. I hope you noted my sarcasm.
Out of Utah, TCU and Boise State, which school would you say has the strongest program?
Great question, Jeff. Do you mean right now or historically? Very difficult to say, but if you are going on overall body of work, then the nod goes to Utah. Two BCS wins, yet another undefeated start to the season and a jump to the Pac-10. Can't get much better than that. But I will say it is impressive what Gary Patterson has done in turning TCU into a power -- one that now has drawn interest from the Big East. And Boise State winning in Idaho and being ranked No. 2 in the country speaks volumes for what Chris Petersen has done.
does anyone care who wins the heisman anymore? i mean isn't it the most overrated trophy in sports? doesn't seem to have the same luster it once did....
If you were to go on our Saturday live chats, then you would have our answer. People care more thank you think. The question comes up every single chat.
Since Nevada and Fresno need to wait an additional year and this decreases the chances that the MWC gets an automatic bid, is TCU more likely to leave for the Big East or somewhere else?
Jared, It will be interesting to see if this impacts TCU. I just think the Horned Frogs would be interested in joining an automatic qualifying conference. Even if Fresno State and Nevada were in for next season, there are no guarantees MWC would become AQ.
Why do you consider Va Tech to be ranked higher than Miami? What about VT's "body of work", Do you consider worth of the Top 25? The loss to JMU at home? The destruction of Duke, BC and Wake Forest (which haven't beaten an FBS team)? Could you please explain this to me?
Why is a one-loss Alabama team ranked ahead of an undefeated Utah? Isn't undefeated better than one loss? Miami had a really awful loss to Florida State, and while the JMU loss is much worse, it happened earlier in the season. The earlier you lose, the more likely you are to climb back into the poll and keep climbing if you keep winning. That FSU loss is very fresh in people's minds, and I think a lot of people are now giving Va Tech a pass for JMU because it came 5 days after a very emotional loss to Boise State.
With the official announcement today regarding Nevada/Fresno State, Mountain West Conference teams will be scrambling to find a 5th OOC opponent in 2011. Where will they look for opponents? Any way WAC/MWC have a challenge similar to what some basketball conferences have done?
Don't know if a challenge is going to happen in football, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few scheduled each other, or looked perhaps to an FCS team to maybe at getting a big payday if some of the power conference schools have slots available.
Can WI still make a BCS bowl and does john clay have a shot a Heisman?
Absolutely Wisconsin can still make a BCS bowl. My colleague, Mark Schlabach, has Wisconsin in a BCS game. Wisconsin needs to win out, and Iowa needs to beat Michigan State and Ohio State. That would give 'em the best shot. And no, sorry, don't think this is the year for Mr. Clay the way Cam Newton is playing at Auburn.
After seeing them play fairly well at Boise, do you think Louisiana Tech is a team better than most give them credit for? Will they make a bowl game this year?
Louisiana Tech is definitely much improved. What's hurt is that is has taken so long for the team to get accustomed to the spread and find a rhythm behind Ross Jenkins. The Bulldogs are going to have to win three of their final four to become bowl eligible, making next week's game vs. Fresno State must win. I just don't see it happening this year.
Why, in every question or conversation about undefeated teams, does ESPN seem to leave TCU out of the equation? The computers have TCU ranked above Boise and if TCU beats Utah, won't The Horned frogs have a much better shot at going further?
Perhaps you should clarify. If you are a reader of my blog, then you know I never leave TCU out of the equation. In fact, I had a post earlier this week saying that it was now possible for TCU to pass Boise State if both remain undefeated.
Hi Andrea, if the Utes run the table, do you think they can snag a Rose Bowl bid a year before they join the Pac12?
It is possible depending on what happens with everyone else. There is a clause this year that says if the Rose Bowl loses one of its teams to the national championship game, it must take the automatic qualifying team from the non-AQs. So if Utah is that automatic qualifying team and the Pac-10/Big Ten has someone in the national championship game, then yes it happens. But a lot has to happen for that scenario to play out.
Wouldn't it be more fitting if Notre Dame played Syracuse rather than Navy in Ireland in 2012? Do you think Notre Dame & Syracuse should become permanent rivals for the sake of Ireland? Fighting Irish vs. Orangemen = Catholics vs. Protestants
Umm ... whatever you say, Dolores? Not sure how to respond to that one.
Andrea, people such as Troy Calhoun have said this Utah team is the best ever. Are they really better than my 04 team?
I think we will know the answer to that one in two weeks. I appreciate you joining the chat, Urban, but you have a big game to get ready for this week. Unless your offense is looking so super awesome you could take a few minutes to read my super awesome chat.
isn't shaky one of the most entertaining players in the country???
I love me some Shaky. Although I do wonder what has taken so long for teams to punt away from him! I wonder how many more chances he's going to get this year.
Andrea, if Nevada runs the table and upsets Boise what are the chances the Fight Hunger Bowl picks Boise over Nevada and Nevada ending up in front of a upset Boise Crowd in the Humanitarian Bowl against a MAC team?
Wouldn't that be something, Travis. I think there would be a lot of discussion if that happens, but how do you pass on Boise State even if Nevada would be playing in front of a hostile crowd? I am going to see if I can find out more about that, it is certainly intriguing to figure out what would happen.
QUESTION TO ANDREA ADELSON AT 4.40 PM HI ANDERA WHO YOU HAVE NEXT SATURDAY UTES OR HORNED FROGS
Ray, You are going to have to wait until next week for my complete breakdown on the game. I have to get people to keep coming back!
Have you read the book "Death to the BCS?" and if so do you agree with their playoff system?
I have it on my nightstand and read the first chapter. I think the first step would be a plus one. I think they talk about a 16-team playoff, right? I just cannot see that happening. I think a plus-one is way more likely if we were to ever get a playoff.
Andrea....i find it amusing how people in the media quote how certain teams have "ranked" teams in them and how they apply that term. If it fits their argument, they apply the term for if the team was ranked at the time (even though it has become apparent to the whole world now that that team now blows), wasn't ranked at the time but now is, or whatever, and then will disparage another team's schedule using totally different criteria to describe their schedule. You understand what i mean?
I understand. I try to stick with "ranked at the time." I know it might be cheesy, but it helps stay consistent, I think.
Is there any way that Utah, with a TCU loss, plays someone other than an average PAC 10 team in the Vegas Bowl?
Nope. Don't see a one-loss Utah being able to qualify as an at-large BCS team.
Better resume if all plays outBoise with wins over VT, Oregon St, Nevada and HawaiiUtah with wins over TCU, AFA, Pitt and NDI say Pitt and OSU cancel each other and so does NV and AFA, so really it is about a win over TCU being better than a win over VT...am i crazy?
If only it were that simple, but the computers take into account the entire schedule. I would say that it may come down to that, but Utah is not a favorite of the voters, as you guys have seen, so the problem is right there. I just can't see an undefeated Utah team jumping an undefeated Boise State team. Utah and TCU have been jumped more than Boise State has this season in both human polls.
The Big East is on the brink of having no teams with less than 3 losses. Will this be an embarrassment to CF and the BCS to have a team with 3+ losses in a BCS bowl game? This has to be terrible for ad revenue as well.
The Big East has not represented itself well in some time. This year is just the bottom of the barrel and is just the latest piece of evidence the league does not deserve an automatic BCS spot.
Andrea, thoughts on the slight MSU keeps getting by the national media for picking against them in almost every big game (UM, Wisconsin, Northwestern, now Iowa). This team is for real.
If by for real, you mean two trick plays away from losing, then cool.
What are your thoughts on NCAA-mandated suspensions for helmet-to-helmet hits
Right now it is up to each conference to determine whether extra punishments should be handed down. I do think the NCAA is doing all it can to make sure there is a crackdown on these helmet to helmet hits, but this is a big question not even the NFL has an answer to, and I am not sure if supsensions are going to solve the issue. These players have been tackling this way since PeeWee. It is going to take more coaching and education to solve this problem.
If I played college football, I would be better than Cam Newton.
Maybe you should focus on winning that championship, LeBron.
OK last one ...
Hi Andrea, wanted to thank you for all the love this season you have been giving to an awesome ARMY team. (However, Please stop picking them as the upset of the week, ha ha.) Wondering why you and Mark both don't have SMU playing Army in the Armed Forces Bowl considering it will be a home game for the Mustangs this year???? Talk about 2 completely different offenses in a game.
SMU is scaring me now after losing two straight. I know it would be a home game but I think East Carolina has the more impressive resume. But hey, there is always time to change the projections. I went from picking SMU as CUSA champ to finishing fourth in the span of a week!Glad you are enjoying the Army coverage. I promise no more upset specials ;) At least for this week.
Thanks to everyone for joining me today! I am live chatting the FSU vs. NC State game tonight so be sure to join me then. We have two games on tap for Saturday, too, starting at 3:30 and 8 p.m. See you then!
