Let's get this thing started
Yo matt!People here love to complain about jeff fisher and I don't understand it one bit. Am I crazy to think we have one of the best coaches in the league? Yeah, he's conservative, but his teams always have string lines on both sides of the ball and punch people on the mouth.
Jason-I very much agree with you. Remember, it isn't like he has a Manning/Brady type to rely on either. But again, his teams are always tough to play against.
How do you think the Cowboys will end up after the injury to Tony Romo?
I don't think it ends well. I don't like Kitna's mobility and he takes way too many risks with the football. That is a bad recipe with this O and esp the OL.
Matt! Huge fan of your work. Is there any chance the packers can rebound from all the injuries?
Going to be extremely tough. I hate to put it all on one guy-and trust me, that isn't fair-but I feel like this is a defining year for Rodgers' career. Can he really put this team on his back without a running game and with all these injuries? Not say the guy has to take GBay to the Super Bowl, but he could prove some things to me this season-and I have faith.
When the Giants implode in weeks 13-17, what are the odds Bill Cowher becomes head coach for 2011?
Wow-not very optimistic! I think NYG is the best team in the NFC and are built for the long haul. Don't see any reason for implosion-but it could happen to any team of course.
Matt, there are rumors that the reason Drew Brees is struggling, is that he has an injury that is being swept under the rug. Any truth to that?
There was talk of that early in the season-and it wouldn't shock me. But that doesn't explain suspect decision making. The turnovers have been brutal. The lack of running game and a falloff on D hasn't helped either. Trying to do too much-which is un-Brees like. I still don't think NO is going away, but I do still like ATL to win that division.
Matt, DeAngelo Hall was the leading receiver in the Redskins/Bears game on Sunday with 4 catches for 92 yards and a TD...problem is that he's a cornerback. Can you find someone to take Cutler out? This is giving all us Bears fans ulcers, well not me, because I've never liked Cutler in a Bears uniform. What kind of trade could the Bears do to get him out of town for next season?
They would certainly lose on the deal and get nothing close to what they gave up to get him. I would also give him another year for sure-and invest in an OL. Cutler has issues, don't get me wrong, but that OL is dreadful. No QB would be successful.
Why does everyone judge QBs on wins alone? I don't understand this one bit. You stick Peyton Manning on the Lions from 2000-2009 and he has maybe 2 playoff appearances? But since they have put a great team around him he is the best QB in football, which I agree with!
That is extremely true. Team sport, but QBs are judged like baseball pitchers or tennis players. I see it with head coaches-and semi with QBs-but it is way too overblown. It is a factor-and I was hesitant to bring it up even with Rodgers.
Hey matt, does matt moore look like he figured it out last week and can finally start to move the panthers down the field through the air, which will opwn they're running game too
Perhaps. They weren't playing a great team though-and it was just one day! Let's see. But I did like him much more before the season than what he showed early.
Matt, is it over for my Vikings? Any truth to the rumor Childress will be fired if he doesn't win this weekend? I can only hope, he is one of the worst coaches in the NFL.
I am not a fan of him as a coach either, but Minny did just invest a lot in him. Favre will be gone after this year. Chilly probably stays. Just my hunch.
Do you still think the chargers can win the division?
They are one of those few teams who could go on a crazy run to finish the season. So, yes. But I doubt it. KC's schedule is very favorable.
has the falcons become the favorite of the NFC?
Sorta. If they can get to the point where they are hosting home playoff games, I think they are. But I do think NYG is the slightly better team. At least right now. Lots of football left.
matt, who do you think will be realistically interested in working for the Yorks to replace Mike Sing? Sing is a goner, Thx
I think he is a goner too. Lots of names out there. Gruden? I think it has to be an offensive specialist
Matt, if john kitna reels off 6 wins which is possible with the talent he has never had and his familiarity with roy williams.
I don't see that. Dallas could rally around him, sure. But what have we seen to say that Dallas has that kind of character as a team?
Matt, jason garrett has to get dez involved more the kid has heart energy and hes is a andre johnson clone of a beast.
He is simply tremendous. And remember-he didn't play this preseason or last year at Okie State.
Matt, has Darren Mcfadden finally arrived as the player many thought he would be?
Am I nuts to still be skeptical? Still very straight linish. Runs high. Gets banged up a lot. But I give him credit-running much harder. Hitting it up in there. And obvious big play ability.
You know talent...was/is Jimmy Clausen as "NFL ready" as some thought?
Nope. Looked totally overwhelmed to me.
do you think the redskins have a shot at the superbowl
Not at all. Don't trust McNabb or their OL. Average weapons. I like the D, but don't love it. I love that we saw the true Albert Haynesworth though last week...that could change my mind. Super star.
Matt, if travaris were to start he could provide a spark with his legs and he's athletic and could be another scrambler with his legs out of the pocket.
For a short term fix, maybe. Not a long term answer, but he does have the deep ball arm and could put it up for Randy to go get against his old team. His legs do present problems too of course. And-if they are smart (IF)-you hand it to Peterson all day.
Matt, does miami need to take the leash off of Chad Henne in order to be more successful? Red zone offense looked terrible. Or is it time for all of us to turn to the heat?
I like Henne. And think that he can handle more. Remember, he has only started about 16 games (or so) in his career. Still learning. That team also really misses a deep threat to open things up. But have faith-not only for now-but for the long term.
Dez Bryant is tremendous--and his arrival has obviously lit a fire under Roy Williams, who is playing his best ball in some time. What do the Cowboys do with their receivers? Too much money tied up into one position, but Williams' contract makes him hard to trade...
Not such a terrible problem to have! Guess it depends on the bargaining argreement/salary cap. Dez and Austin are keepers though-no question. If you have to cut Roy even to make that work, so be it. But I think you just roll with what you have until Williams' contract is up.
Where do you rank Halloween on your fav holiday list? Also, can you grade my man Pete Carroll so far?
B+...exceeding expectations for sure. Getting a TON out of an ordinary roster too. As for Halloween, it is skyrocking up my holiday list since having kids. We have a 4 year old and 2 year old-Batman and Robin this year. Makes it fun. But-not thrilled that it is on a Sunday this year! Work day for DaDa.
How worried should Steeler fans be about the injuries on defense, as well as the overall age of the defense as the season wears on?
Not as much to worry about concerning age. I would imagine that Woodley will miss one game at most. But Smith is a gigantic loss. Hood isn't proven, but does have potential. Could surprise. But I do really worry about DE depth and run D.
Yeah, Dallas' receivers are so good they're 1-5
That is a pretty terrible point
Matt, let's say the rams go after s.holmes or b.edwards the jets won't pay both #1 money they could have a chance and bradfords stock goes way up with a better young wr core.
I agree and would expect a move like that. Either an A or B UFA WR or a first round pick at WR or TE. That is the only missing piece to that O. Agreed.
Well I mean come on now Matt, is anyone, anyone at all, playing well for that team? Bryant perhaps, after all of one game.
That is a correct statement. But it isn't like Dallas CANNOT be successful with that group of wide outs! I would start a team with those three!
Is the cornball the worst "treat" on Halloween ever?Maybe Mallow Cups or apples.
Mallow Cups are just horrid. I remember one neighbor always gave us 10 pennies. Boo on that.
Matt love your work! But surely we can't go a hole chat without mentioning Ryan Fitzpatrick ... what do you make of this guy? He has been exceptional and has played against top tier D's, thoughts going forward?
Playing very well. Ross Tucker said it well on the podcast Monday-He has now earned himself a backup job for the next 10 years. That is true! But, he is tough, smart and VERY willing to let it fly, which Edwards just would not do. Is he one of the best 32 QBs in the world? Yes, but if you are Buff, you still draft the stud franchise QB first overall.
Everyone knows that cardboard orange peanut is the worst Halloween treat ever! I would rather have your 10 pennies
Those are bad too...nice one
I like it. People do need to know about you. Playing great. Actually-have always played great.
Of these potential job openings, pick the ones you think are most desirable for a prospective coach: Chicago, SF, Dallas, Minny, Carolina, Denver
Dallas pays the best (guessing) and has the best roster...but their owner is going to buy the groceries, which is a major problem. I would probably say Minny-but that QB issue is just massive and the Vikes have dealt a lot of future draft picks already...so scratch that. Chicago then. They have a QB. They have a D. Change the system to better fit Cutler and the city. Build an OL. To me, if you are say, Cowher, you HAVE to go somewhere that has a QB.
Matt, do you see the nfl having more overseas games. Why not an international round. It would be a great way to globalise the fanbase of nfl teams with each team having a home country that they play in once ervey two years...... even just in preseason....
I hate the overseas games. Sorry
If you had a fantasy re-draft right now, who are the top three picks? Don't tell me Maverick, Iceman and Goose, either.
That would be a quality lineup. But I guess Peterson would have to be #1. Still go Johnson at
After Ben saying he thought his arm was broken on that hit, can we assume there won't be any more QB draws called?
It is a pretty good play though for him!
everyone knows those wax lips and wax bottle shaped candies are horrrrrrrible!
OH YEAH! The WORST
Matt! You see my boy A-Rodge get the monkey off his back? I think this win can spark a little run for the Pack - starting with a BIG win this week. You think it can happen?
I do think it can happen. Rodgers is incredibly capable. Won't be easy though with the injuries. Pretty brutal stretch of injuries for the Pack.
I've always been a huge Terence Newman fan, I thought he's played very well all season, he gave up a few catches vs the Giants but is playing with rib strain....to answer Sergio's question, Newman is playing well or the best of the Cowboys
He is playing better than last year and is playing better than Jenkins. Jenkins was the better CB in 2009. But I agree-can't blame Newman. Newman! Anyways, that Ware guy is pretty good too. I actually think Romo might have been playing the best of any Cowboy.
Matt kevin kolb or michael vick for the rest of the year?
I would start Kolb. Can better utilize your playbook. You chose him to begin the season for that reason. And-you can use Vick off the bench here and there during a game-really can't swing that the other way with Kolb as a reliever out of the pen.
Do you have a brother named bill williamson?
Not related at all-you are not the first who has asked.
I think Rodger Saffold has been the most impressive rookie OT this year. Agree?
It has been in VERY limited views, but I was overwhelmed with Okung. But I like Saffold too. He has outplayed Williams or Bulaga.
Matt who would you rather have from here on out ... fantasy wise: Henne, Stafford or Fitzpatrick?
Stafford. Will be throwing it a ton.
Are the days of Tom Brady throwing for more than 1-2 TDs per game over? Did Randy Moss really make this big of a difference in the Pats' offense?
The O is just much different. Very unique really. All sorts of quick versatile ball control receivers at every position. My only worry-Who takes the top off and opens up space for everyone else? Gonna get crowded in the short and intermediate zones. As for Brady, I still see a lot of points being scored and TDs being thrown-but not long ones.
Matt, enjoy your work. But you just contradicted yourself. You said Dallas will pay the best and has the best roster, but the Owner buys the groceries which is a major problem. I don't deny JJ is a problem, but if he is paying the best and supplying the best roster that is buying the groceries. Can't have it both ways. He should not be as involved, but will always need to buy the groceries. And he needs to dump the outdated and bruised fruit (Wade)!
My point there is if I am Cowher or Gruden, I want to have the final say on Draft Day and in all personnel matters. Could be a sticking point to getting a big named guy hired. You point is valid though-honestly, I can't condemn JJ in terms of his roster building.
Who would you rather have long-term, Hakeem Nicks or Dez Bryant? They both look ridiculous.
They both are ridiculous! Long term, there are VERY few WRs that I would take over either player. But give me Nicks by a hair. Just a little more proven at this level. But wow, that is tough. Would still take Calvin J over both.
I will play by NFL rules. I will not hit illegal. Can I get back to sacking the QB after playing against the two best LTs in football these past two weeks in Joe Thomas and Jake Long?
MMMM....South Water Street! I spent a lot of time there! Oh yeah James-you will be a terror...as always. Will help when Woodley returns as well.
Your telling me Cowher wouldn't LOVE to hand the ball to AP 30 times a game like he did with the Bus?
Sure he would. That would be extremely attractive, but he also knows that you need a QB to really make it all work. I just don't know how Minny lands that QB. Unless they make a deal for someone like Vick. Even then...
Hey im better then Dez Crab and Nicks do I get no love? Plus im 3 inches taller then them
You are getting love. Far outplaying Crabtree. Nicks is the best player of that group though right now.
Pick two RBs to have on your fantasy roster the rest of the year: Jamaal Charles, Darren McFadden, Jahvid Best, Amhad Bradshaw.
Charles would be first and Best would be last. The other two worry me with durability. Coin flip.
Are the Bills really that bad, most of their games were close?
I think they are the worst team in the league, but I don't think that the 2010 Bills would be the worst in the league most years. Not an all time terrible team. That D is brutal though.
Something everyone wants to know....... who should we be targeting in Keeper PPR leagues for next year? Is there anyone who is going to be elite that hasn't reached that level yet?
Hmmm...this will take some thinking. Harvin comes to mind right off the bat. Elite is a big word, but I like Bess a lot for that. Hernandez at TE. Will kick that around.
who's the best Offensive Lineman in the draft? Dallas may get a top 5 pick
Not sure on that yet-not up to date with the draft. Too busy with NFL. But I like your train of thought there with Dallas. OL! Maybe a STUD FS.
I think the Chargers could actually play worse on offense and defense but win games by just holding on to the football. I cant believe they already have more fumbles through 7 games than all of last season
Not sure what to add to that! Making some plays on special teams wouldn't hurt either. Also jumping off sides when you kicker is about to try a long FG to tie the game isn't very helpful.
Is Mark Ingram a possibility for the Pats next year with the Raiders pick?
I bet that pick is a pass rusher. BIG investment for that position-RB I mean.
How wide open is the NFC?
Will sort itself out though. My predictions at this point for playoffs: Div winners-Sea, GBay, NYG and ATL. Wild Cards: NOrls and Philly. See...that wasn't so tough.
Stop pushing Percy Harvin. To everyone (especially in my leagues) - he's no good for you.
Good to hear from you Hedley...but Harvin is the man.
Not accepting posts from me anymore? what is up? i thought we wuz boys?
We are still cool. Real cool. But to quote Tombstone..."I'm sorry. I forgot you were there."
i thing trent williams is the best tackle out of the draft and i don't thing saffold has faced the as many great pass rushers as williams this year
Williams has battled injury too. But I still think Saffold has been better.
Folks, I need to run. Great chat as always. See ya next week and keep downloading the podcast.
