Hi folks. Happy to be breathing and back for another chat. I'd imagine we'll be UFC 121 heavy today and rightfully so. Hope you enjoyed the MMA Live coverage. Starting early to get some questions in the queue out of the way. We'll go live in 10 minutes.
chost, Great shows last week and fantastic coverage of UFC 121. Lets do this more often.
Appreciate it. Had a lot of fun, as always.
Hey Jon,Who should Brock fight in his first fight back?
I'm not jumping out of my seat to see Lesnar-Mir III, but that could happen. Would have to think Gabe Gonzaga and Cheick Kongo are also possibilities.
Hey Chost! Thanks for the chats and the good show. Question about Jake Shields. I thought Kampmann won the fight, but I thought I understand that it could have gone either way. Question: after that performance do you think Shields still gets to GSP-Koscheck winner or does he need another win after that showing before getting the shot? I would love to see him and Fitch go at it.
Thanks, Manu. I, too, scored it 29-28 for Kampmann, but it was very close. I understand those who think Shields did enough to win the fight. Randy Couture thought the fight was there for the taking, but that perhaps Martin had lost it late by giving up his back. As for Shields and a title shot, your guess is as good as mine. Depends what happens 12/11.
With Carwin and Lesnars injuries, timeline wise do you think its set up for a rematch?
Very possible. But I think Lesnar needs to get a win and rebuild some confidence. Not sure that would happen against Shane Carwin.
Where did that offer to spar with Brock Lesnar come from? That was pretty hilarious
Hahaha. Just popped into my head at the time. Clearly, Lesnar does not like to get hit in the face. So I just thought maybe if I hit him in the face, he could then work his way up.
Chost, where is Chael?
Looks like we're getting silence until the appeal hearing.
Congratulations on another great broadcast! You guys are really finding your groove. Great chemistry with you, Randy and Kenny. UFC PPVs feel so much bigger when MMA Live is there. THANK YOU ESPN!
Thx. That means a lot. Can't remember having more fun doing the road shows. Crazy to think we've done 9 live events now. Really hope eventually we do all UFC PPVs. Appreciate everyone who watched and set their DVRs.
Dana said Jake Shields will get the next title shot but surely if Kos wins they do the rematch straight away?
Immediate rematches are by no means the norm, but that could happen. And GSP would deserve it. But even off a loss, we could see a mega-fight with Anderson Silva. Just so many factors and upsets in MMA.
What's the news with Shane Carwin? Who is taking his place against Nelson?
TBD. I think Frank Mir makes the most sense.
Jon, how amazing was it being at 121?!
Unbelievable moment. That crowd exploded when Velasquez finished Lesnar. Loud and in unison.
What do u think of a brock vs roy nelson next?
No way to predict how Lesnar will choose to handle this loss. His face is beat up. Even though Brock would love to get right back in there and takes pride in being an active champion, I think 1/1 is too soon.
I can't believe Brock Lesnar lost, I am so upset. I don't think I am going to follow MMA anymore. No reason to with that scrub as the heavyweight champion
Cain Velasquez and scrub shouldn't share a sentence unless you are talking about the guy he is fighting. Velasquez has the chance to be an all-time great. Nothing more daunting than reigning in the UFC's heavyweight division, but he actually could do it. Junior Dos Santos next is a huge challenge. But Cain will win.
How were your ratings for MMA Live last week?
Hopefully huge boss.
How many fights does Brock have in him?
I think Cain is the worst possible matchup for Lesnar and he can/will beat many UFC heavyweights. I just don't think he'll keep fighting unless he thinks he can be champion again. Thus, he needs a win next time around. Thus, not sure he should fight Carwin.
Jake Shields doesn't deserve a title shot, not yet.
He's won 15 straight fights. If GSP beats Koscheck, who is the No. 1 contender? No one loved his victory Saturday night, but I don't have a beef w/ Shields as No. 1 contender.
Is Carwin's "injury" the same as Belfort's injury? Belfort claimed to be hurt before getting a title shot vs Spider Silva.
Don't have any inside information for you. If I did, not even sure I'd be allowed to share it. I understand why fans' minds think the way they do, but it is likely coincidental.
Jon, after JDS, who's next in the heavyweight division. The only remotely highly ranked guy scheduled to fight before February is Big Country, and he just lost a Number One Contender fight, and Cro Cop, even if he fights and beat Nelson is still nowhere near ready.
Contenders always emerge. And of course, a Lesnar-Carwin rematch would absolutely determine a No. 1 contender. That is a possible course of action.
I'm sure the Honda Center was rockin, but so was the Liacouras Center on Thursday night.
I bet it was! Have the Bellator fights on DVR and look forward to watching them. Curious to see Askren-Good more than anything.
Lesnar vs Mir or Nog makes sense to rebuilt the viking.
Hate to say it, but I think Nogueira would get hurt. Just been through so many wars. Don't want your body to abandon you against that freight train.
Mir v Lesnar III makes sense for the UFC. Big PPV fight, easy win for Brock and we get to see loud mouth smashed again.
I'd love to see Mir get that pay day and hype the PPV. Not sure it is a great matchup for him.
no beef with Sheilds as #1 why is no one talking Carlos Condit #1 contender?
I'm sure they are! And it doesn't matter what the fans/media are saying as long as he's on the UFC's short list of contenders. When you win with style points, you can get fast-tracked. CC is in the mix.
JA-Props to your coverage over the weekend. Keep it up! I had Brock winning, bit was not shocked when Cain won. I was shocked how easy he made it look. I know MMA has a way to over hype someone, but how long do you think he can be champ? Do you see anyone as of now that will take the belt from him?
History tells us no UFC heavyweight champion has successfully defended the belt more than twice in a row. But I think Cain is the #1 heavyweight in the world and should be favored to beat anyone right now.
Any inside info on the MAJOR UFC announcement tomorrow?
Jon, Brendan Schaub said he wanted Mir next. Does that really make sense? Mir is great on the ground, and Schaub spent literally zero seconds on the ground against Gonzaga.
It's always smart to go after a big name through the press, or Twitter. Jake Ellenberger is going after Shields, and Schaub knows what he's doing when asking for a big fight. Also wants to test himself, I'm sure, with a different type of challenge.
Doesn't it make more sense to keep Brock and Carwin away from each other until one is champ? Give Carwin a title shot first then rematch Brock
No guarantees that one of them will be champion anytime soon. There's this Velasquez guy that's gonna be awfully tough.
Do you think we'll see a Velasquez-Jon Jones fight for the heavyweight title?
I doubt it. Or, not anytime soon. Jon Jones should stay at 205 as long as he can. He probably won't want to leave light heavyweight until he wins the belt.
Jon, I hate to ask this in a legit MMA chat - but what's up with this Undertaker-Lesnar staredown after the fight? Dana would never allow some "worked" WWE spot at one of his events...I refuse to believe it. On the other hand...awfully coincidental time and place to do that interview with Undertaker.
No comment. Just don't feel the need to address it.
So Cain has already shot up to -250 (v. JDS). Bandwagon betting, or legit line? I think that'll even out before they fight in ______.
Wow. I'm sure it'll even out some. But it won't be my money making it happen. What a fight that will be.
Who you got in the upcoming Pacquiao-Margarito fight?
Excited to have the night off and be buying the PPV! I like Pacquiao by 10th-round KO.
Does Eddie Alvarez make your top 10 lb for lb?
No, but one win over a top guy could move him there easily. Beat Melendez, and you're in.
Cain vs Alistair. Who would you take?
Let's just start a fund to make it happen.
Who should Brock pull into his next trainning camp?
Great question. Florian thinks he should train non-stop in Muay Thai and boxing. Not sure it's about the 'who', b/c Lesnar has the money to bring in the best in the world (and willingly dumps millions back into his career). Just needs repetitions in striking and getting struck.
Do you believe that Brock can be "taught" to keep cool under pressure, can he learn to take hits and keep his composure? Or does he not have a fighters heart as some have suggested/
Not gonna be the guy to put limitations on that man. I'm a huge Lesnar fan and he has been great for our sport. He can certainly get back into a title fight. Just has to be willing to get knocked out cold.
Why doesn't Jon Fitch get any love from the UFC? When will he be "ready" for a title shot?
I think the UFC would be reluctant to have him fight Jake Shields for fear that Fitch would beat him and eliminate a contender. Shields is in a tough spot. But do you move to 185 when you are seemingly close to a title shot at 170?
After that great performance over Paulo Thiago should Diego Sanchez move down to 155?
I think he'll just take the biggest fight offered and go up and down, not unlike B.J. Penn.
Chost, how do UFC contracts work? Efrain won TUF, so he won the 6 figure contract, yet he was cut? Are they not guarenteed like NFL contracts and can be voided at any time? What gives?
I believe with Escudero, he was cut b/c he missed weight on more than one occasion. TUF contracts are guaranteed, more so than other contracts. Most UFC contracts allow you to be cut with a loss.
Can I go on the record and say tomorrow's announcement is officially setting a date for the Rogers Centre show (complete with "fan expo")...
Any special guests to be expected on tomorrow's live?
Not sure right now. Will update later today on Twitter- @Jon_Anik
Is Big Country vs. TBA going to be a number 1 contender match?
I don't think the UFC will come out and say it. But Nelson could have a case if he beats a big enough name - and does so emphatically.
Does Mir step in for Carwin to face Big Country?
I hope so.
Chost! You going to be here in December for GSP vs Koscheck? Going to be insane down here. Montreal is turning into an amazing fight town with GSP, Bute and Pascal
I really hope so, man. I'd put Montreal up against any fight town in the world right now. Go B-Hop!
What's the deal with Sportscenter always cutting into my DVR'd MMA live, man? I'm tired of getting half an episode. Nonetheless, MMA live is awesome and is one of the few shows I will chase down on the internet.
Thanks, Will. Here's the deal. Set the DVR for an extra 60 minutes. Every time MMA Live is scheduled. That way, you will never miss the show. It's the best advice I can give. And, we did get to do a live SportsCenter hit, so hope y'all caught that. SC is good to us.
where is the rogers centre? Mid west? PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE
Mir vs. Nelson makes the most sense but what about Schaub vs. Nelson II?
Makes sense to me, but some don't think it'll happen right now.
Thoughts on Diego? He looked solid.
Cain Velasquez is the new champion, but Diego Sanchez was the night's biggest winner. He got destroyed in his previous two fights and was fighting a tough guy in Paulo Thiago. He put it all together on a big PPV stage (the Lesnar effect) and continues to be a big draw and fan favorite. Diego is relevant again.
Thoughts on Chris Camozzi? That kid is damn tough!
We were on the air when he was fighting!
But definitely a tough kid. 6'3".
how about them rangers!!!
How about them Rangers is right. I was celebrating the NYY elimination in Anaheim. I speak for most of Boston when I say I'm looking forward to a World Series without New York or Philadelphia.
Sherdog is reporting that Jake Shields is under a medical suspension, with zero contact, for 6 months. Once the suspension is lifted, how many months will he need to train for GSP?
Interesting. 6 months zero contact. That changes things up. Likely out of action for 9 months, if that is true.
Jon, any chance of Eddie Alvarez coming to the UFC anytime soon?
Doubt it'll happen anytime soon. Bellator has some staying power and he is happy there.
thanks again JA Wednesday's are becoming better then Friday's.
How about those BOO's for Kos when he walked in Sat night... hilarious!
After UFC 113, Koscheck went into heel mode. He's killin' it. So much better for fans to hate you than to be indifferent towards you. Montreal is gonna be absolutely nuts. Extra security for Koscheck's walkout. Maybe they should just drop him down into the cage from the rafters.
Great coverage over the weekend. Do you know when you will next get to go on the road?
Hopefully December 11th for UFC 124 in Montreal. Hopeful.
Shields may be cleared by an opthamologist and have his med. suspension reduced
His eye did look jacked up when he was on the set of MMA Live Saturday.
Jon Jones' title shot -- over/under 2.5 fights away. Which are you taking?
Under. 2 wins and you're in a title fight. Could feasibly be 1.
6 month suspension OR when cleared by a doctor.
That's a big clarification. Thanks, Mickey.
How much of a chance are you giving me againist Cain?
Nicely done by the Celtics, by the way. I know it's only one game. But hahahahahahahahahahaha
Maybe the big announcement is about New York
I don't think so. At least work lets you chat.
Does Kole Konrad have the same probs/limitations that Brock has, what do you think of his future?
He's got a tremendous wrestling base, obviously, but he also has one of the better jiu-jitsu games for a wrestler. Some nice submissions. Limited on the feet for sure. Must evolve and become close to elite in all disciplines.
Is Cain medically suspended for assaulting Lesnar in front of millions? The worst beating since Fedor manhandled Sylvia. Fedor v Cain must happen.
I would love to see Fedor Emelianenko brought into the mix right now. What a matchup Fedor vs. Cain would be. I'd actually favor Velasquez to beat him.
where does tito go from here, i think he only has a 1 fight left worth seeing at most
He's still competitive enough to win rounds and not get finished. But he seems to win the first round, and then be unable to mount any sort of offense thereafter. Dana's comments on MMA Live were interesting. Intimated that perhaps Ortiz could be cut. I think he'll live to fight another day.
how soon do you think the ufc will try and put jds vs cain
Spring. May want to spend some time building it up. JDS wants the fight now.
UFC 123 underrated PPV?
Absolutely. Nice card top to bottom, not to mention that Rampage is must-see TV.
Do you think there is any chance Lesner would go to one of the big camps to prepare for his next fight.? He seems tactically weak and would benefit from working with some fast strikers.
Hopefully Lesnar will do whatever it takes. Even if he leaves his Minnesota compound for 2 weeks, it could make a huge difference. I'm sure that will be discussed.
With Carwin's power, he could def be a threat to Cain. I would like to see that fight more than JDS.
Yeah, Dos Santos is next in line, but I think Velasquez-Carwin is the more intriuging fight. Others disagree.
Where would Tito go if he were to be cut? Retirement? Stirkeforce?
Who knows? I'm sure he could go to SF if he wanted to. Seems to be healthy enough to fight.
Chost....any clue how many stitches Brock got from Cain???
Not sure. Gonna get going on show prep in about 10 minutes, so last call...
Only watched the tv version of MMA Live last week. Did you ask Florian about the Aldo fight that didn't happen?
We asked him about it on the extended version for ESPN.com and ESPNUK. It's part 3 of 4 from last week, the first part of the segment. He basically said his camp was offered the fight and would jump at the chance to face one of the best in the world.
Sam Stout: Whats next for him ? Will he be on a main card soon?
Not sure that's in the cards. He wins, but he's a decision machine. Oftentimes the Fight of the Night bonuses follow, but he's just not all that memorable. Maybe a guy like Ross Pearson?
Fitch should move up to 185 as he will never get another title shot by laying on people. the UFC hates his style.
Better venue for UFC - Mandalay Bay or MGM Grand?
Really love them both. Always have a soft spot for Mandalay b/c I covered my first fight there. But more fights now take place at MGM.
Tito vs Iceman soon, buy or sell?
Very possible. But Dana is really reluctant to have Liddell fight again and I don't blame him.
whats up with hammil. wheres he at in that division and who could he fight next
Someone in the chat suggested Lil Nog. Either way, it'll be Top 8-10 competition.
YEah, and K-Flo said he'd like to 'welcome' him to the UFC hahahahaha
Do you expect the UFC to add another marquee fight to UFC 125 after losing the Carwin-BC fight? I don't see the Edgar-Maynard snooze fest to sell PPVs.
Easier said than done at this point. 1/1 is soon. And I also think Edgar-Maynard will be better than you think. If Frankie gets his hands going, it could be very memorable.
Do you think your boy Hector Lombard will win Thursday in his title defense, do something good couldn't do?
Hector will win. I'm impressed that Lyman Good went the full 25 w/ Askren, even if he was easily taken down. Askren has the chance to be a huge winner in MMA.
Is Couture done?
Many of you missed our Preview Special from UFC 121, when Randy addressed his fighting future. Not to worry. We'll play back the sound tomorrow night on MMA Live, 1AM ET on ESPN2. A little tease- his days of fighting for the title are over.
Where is Pat Barry? haven't heard much about him fighting recently. How about him against Big Country?
Just don't think Barry deserves that fight right now. Nelson is much higher up on the totem pole.
Mir vs Big Country at 125 makes sense. Mir took no damage after his sparring session vs Cro Cop. awful, awful, awful fight.
I think that's the direction in which the UFC is leaning.
What do you think about Brock's gameplan? Watching the fight, i thought it was questionable.
Definitely questionable. Huge adrenaline dump after the first few minutes. If one of those knees connected, the fight could've been different. But Lesnar's chin appears very suspect right now.
Could you see the UFC putting the Velasquez-JDS fight on the Super Bowl card? That would make it an absolutely stacked card.
I'm sure neither fighter would have a problem with it. But the UFC may want time to build the fight with fans. And they could have another destination in mind.
Couture vs Tito for the heck of it?
Couture would entertain novelty fights, but I'm not sure that one is at the top of his list.
Who you got in olympic wrestling, Askren or GSP? What about Askren vs Sonnen?
Great question. Hard not to back Askren. Just gimme 2 of those 3 and you can have the other one.
When will Wanderlei fight again? Wand vs Leben would be awesome.
Leben could still fight Brian Stann on 1/1, despite Leben's recent dust-up.
At every BC football game they honor a former athlete. KenFlo has to start petitioning to get honored! Heck, he'd probably be a better QB than what they have now.
That'd be great. I'd go.
Not including Jon Jones and Velasquez who have arrived, who do you think is the next huge star in MMA?
Maybe Ben Askren. Not the most dynamic guy, but I've never had more fun watching wrestling in MMA.
What happened to 10 minutes? Can I get an early prediction on Hughes/Penn? For a long time reader?
Didn't see an answer come through on Camozzi...that kid has the talent and toughness to make noise in the future. Thoughts?
Yup. Didn't see the fight b/c we were on the air. Like his size and toughness. He trains hard.
Penn in a bad fight
Diego Sanchez vs Nate Diaz next?
Sure! I need to start printing out depth charts with upcoming fights before the chats. Probably 500 'play matchmaker' questions today. Everyone wants to be Joe Silva. Except me.
How is Penn/Hughes not going to be entertaining? People disgust me. Penn can jump out of a pool.
Who's the most under-rated MMA fighter in your opinion?Any chance you'd answer who you think is the most over-rated in open forum?
I think Evan Dunham is still underrated. He could actually be the best lightweight in the world. So I hope Florian beats him. :)
Do you give a credence to home cage advantage? Would brock have a better chance fighting cain in MN?
Interesting question. Rarely do I think that would play a role. A lot of guys relish the role of underdog/heel and prefer to fight in a hostile environment. Perhaps it would help in Brock's case to have the crowd. An opponent not named Cain would help more.
Chost says Penn? I'm betting the house on Hughes!!!
Hey, you're only as good as your last card. Went 4-1. And I told y'all if Velasquez won, it would be in the 1st round.
How much would you pay for access to every UFC PPV for that year? Why don't they offer something like that?
I'm sure the merits have been discussed. I think it's hard to know exactly how many PPVs there will be and I'm not sure it would help profits at all. I'd pay $400-$500 up front for sure.
Although it would never happen, put Askren/Tyron Woodley on a SF/Belltor card, since it's a pipe dream, GO BIG!
You are hardcore.
Chost! I was always under the assumption that when Brock takes you down, you stay down - what happened w/ Cain?
Great use of the butterfly guard, great quickness and ability to execute. Velasquez is just a well-rounded fighter. And he said he was a little flat, too. Scary.
Alright, folks. Gotta run. Plenty more great coverage on the MMA page, including our interviews w/ Dana White, Cain Velasquez and Jake Shields from MMA Live at UFC 121. Overflow questions- hit me up on Twitter- follow @Jon_Anik. New episode of MMA Live is tomorrow at 1AM ET on ESPN2. Until then, rest up. -JA
