Chat with Jesse Rogers

Jesse Rogers
  (2:02 PM)

Hi all. Welcome to our weekly chat coming to you from the united center. The Hawks and Kings just finished up their morning practices for the game tonight. Lets talk some Hawks. Fire away

AJ (Naperville)

Jesse, do you ever think the team will get back to the low number of shots allowed we saw last season?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:03 PM)

Probably not as low as last yr. They are giving up 34 now...they gave up 25 last year...If they can get to about 29, I think that would be a nice goal to achieve...Campbell's return will help the number come down...

Jeremy (Gurnee)

Hendry and Cullimore is what I am hearing for the 3rd D pairing? Is this correct? Scott is scratched tonight? I also heard Bernier in net for LA. Is that true?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:03 PM)

Yes, all true.

Keith (Waupaca, WI)

Where is Brian Campbell at with his recovery? Skating?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:04 PM)

Practiced today with the team for the first time. I think it will be next wed. for his first game...Outside chance at monday in NY

Charlie (Chicago)

With the inconsistency and question marks on the 4th line and Fernando Pisani struggling, will we see Jeremy Morin back in the NHL soon?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:06 PM)

Possibly..have to look at salary implications...Morin did get hurt last week but dont think its serious...If u ask me today--which u are--I think he'll be here as long as the money works...may not be for the rest of the year but I think he gets a few games if there is an injury and it makes sense..if he lights up the world then maybe he stays

Corey Ranes (Carbondale, IL)

Who would you like to see more production from on the team? My vote is Dave Bolland.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:06 PM)

Yeah, Bolland but really Brouwer...Im sticking with this guy for as long as I can! Bolland too but hes their best defensive centerman playing against other teams top lines so I give him a little pass...

jon (karthaus)

hey jesse, do you think stahlberg is capable of filling the role versteeg played and putting up 20+ this year?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:07 PM)

It seems like it. Steeg turned out to be more polished in his own end..this is stalberg's first full year so lets give him time...but 15-20 seems possible...depends who he plays with

Jeremy (Gurnee)

Have you heard anything about a trade occurring once Brian Campbell comes back? Once he is back we will have 8 D-men and I heard the Hawks are looking for another center..

Jesse Rogers
  (2:09 PM)

Personally, I think they would be taking a chance to trade a d-man..they are kind of thin there but they do need another center...kopy wont be the long term answer and bottom line, sharp is better at wing so they are short there...boynton's value will never be higher so I could see it but its like robbing peter to pay paul...you strngthen one area and weaken another...

Steve (St. Louis)

Do you disagree with the Hawks taking two days off when, as you note, they clearly could benefit from more practice?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:11 PM)

Hard for me to say...Ive never seen a schedule to start a season like this..even campbell said today, hes used to seeing 7-9 games in Oct..not 13..plus my big thing was the back and forth home and road, that was goofy. plus, consider the short summer...Im not in that coaches room...real hard to criticize this stuff without being on the inside..

Jimbo (Arlington Heights)

Jesse. The Hawks are giving up 9 shots a game more than last year. This cannot all be on Campbell being out. How much of a factor does having all these new forwards have to do with this discrepancy?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:13 PM)

No doubt the new roster has to do with it...lets not get overly worked up about stats in October...the number needs to come down and my guess is it will as opposed to going up...I would say campbell plus new lineup has contributed...

Dan (My Cube)

what do you think about Ryan Potulny? They have him down in Rockford. Last year playing for a crappy Edmonton team he scored 15 and assisted 17. Plus, he's a natural center.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:14 PM)

I could see him coming up...its a process...have to exhaust some options here and go from there...

Ryan (Iowa)

Looking at the stats, Lalonde looks like he is playing well in Rockford. How long until he is ready?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:14 PM)

Not this year is my guess...maybe next? Need to watch him to know more...

Jay (Chicago)

I really liked seeing Sharpie on wing. He has the great ability to move around but I really don't see him as a true center. Any chance we see a call up from the minors for Pirri and have Sharp at wing. I like Toews and Kane with Bickell and Sharp and Hossa with a new center. I don't think Kopecky brings anything special despite the good start. Anyone could put up assists playing with Hossa.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:16 PM)

I have been critical of Kopecky at times but dont take away his nice start...I dont agree with "anyone" could have the numbers with Hossa..hes taking a beating in front of hte net and keeping plays alive...Now, I agree with you about sharp and yes I could see Potulny or Brophey or maybe Pirri at some point for longer than a game but we are not there yet..i think sharp back at center is more likely again than those other guys for at this point..those guys need more time down there (not so much brophey)

Bill (Deerfield)

Who's had the roughest start so far to this season?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:18 PM)

Take your pick: Hammer, Bolland, Brouwer...i think I would vote for Hjalmarsson...looks like hes pressing, had the suspension, lost soupy as a partner...zero points, -6. ouch

Paul (Chicago)

It's very exciting that Campbell is expected back this weekend. How do you see the final pairing shaping out when Campbell gets back? Who is the odd man out?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:19 PM)

The way Boynton has played for the most part, it will be a battle between Hendry and Scott and cullimore...unless one goes down...Its pretty even though I think they like Culli right now of the 3.

Grant (Wheaton)

By sitting Scott tonight, does that mean Q finally realized you can't have two defensemen playing under 20 minutes combined?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:20 PM)

No, I cause hendry and culli may log the same...its simple..keep motivating them all until one emerged..here is another chance for hendry

jeff (rosemont)

whats up with kane ?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:22 PM)

We all in the media wrote about Kane yesterday/today cause he was available and gave good quotes...I dont think there is much wrong with him...I judge him on points..starting with if hes a point per game guy...hes just under that..needs the puck even more and HE has to make that happen..he knows that..its not like hes been awful..in my opinion

Steve G (Northbrook)

Hey Jesse...How long do you see Kaner lasting on the third line? 1 period or 2 periods? I don't see the hunger from this team like last year. I don't know what the avg shots against this year versus last year but it has to be about 10 shots more a game the Hawks are giving up. I don't see guys laying out to block shots or the hunger from the forwards coming back defensively. What's going on with that?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:24 PM)

I dont think its hunger...theyre just a work in progress as you would expect...not really sure you have to call it the 3rd line but I dont see it lasting too long...this is Q trying to see if he can get a mismatch somewhere and some chemistry...you never know but its also a message, no doubt. and I see guys laying out to block shots..hammer does it all the time...

Bt (Lake Forest)

Hi Jesse, what do you think is a a bigger need for this team, a second line center or top 6 LW? And what do you think we can expect from Kopecky at center? I would love for that experiment to work so they can keep Sharp at LW to focus on keeping that scoring streak going, but I'm not holding my breath... Thanks!

Jesse Rogers
  (2:25 PM)

Center...for the reason you said. keep sharp at wing. Not expectng much from Kiopy at center but the guy has a lot of heart so lets give him a chance

Fitz (My Cube)

Jesse I am a huge sharpie fan, do you see him staying at wing? Does it depend more on how the Czechs play?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:26 PM)

It depends on how the other centers, especially Kopy...so I see it for now but maybe not for long...if he cools off he might go right back to center

Frank (Naperville)

How much longer before Pisani finds himself a healthy scratch?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:27 PM)

Might not be too long though they have no extar forwards...if he wants Scott in the lineup, it could be for Pisani..usually you give veterans the benefit of the doubt but he hasnt done much

Andy (Old Town )

Kopecky is listed as a center. When was the last time he played for an extended period of time?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:28 PM)

Little bit in Det. but really juniors so its been a while

Ryan (Iowa)

What did you think of Brophey's play on Sat?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:28 PM)

Did not embarass...decent but not spectacular

Mark (Buffalo Grove)

Do you think there is a goalie controversy brewing? Marty Turco does not seem to be the answer to the teams need.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:29 PM)

No I dont think there is one brewing...hes not the problem...had some clutch moments already after a couple of bad goals...they will give him plenty of leash..

Will (SLC)

Was it a mistake to let Niemi walk? I have almost thrown up watching Turco let in goals that a pee wee leaguer could stop. And it seems the team still has Stanley Cup hangover, would you agree.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:30 PM)

Have you seen Niemi?? Not good either...Turco redeemed himself winning those back to back OT games...I agree a few of those goals were bad..

josh (itasca, il)

what do you think is the hawks true weakness right now?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:31 PM)

Getting the puck and keeping it...kind of cliche and broad I know but right now, they arent a special team they are just a talented one

Gibbs (Chicago)

Are Keith and Seabrook just exhausted from all the minutes they have played over the last 2 seasons between long playoff runs and the Olympics or have people figured out how to attack them better?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:32 PM)

A case can be made but thats very hard to tell..they certainly arent saying they are exhausted but i dont think the big minutes they are seeing now is the way to go...campbell return should help as does boynton's play

Janice (Naperville)

What do you think of Kane with Bolland and Stalberg? I like trying to find chemistry; just wondering what you observed in the limited amount of practice?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:33 PM)

Cant tell anything in practice...It has a chance...Bolly is a very smart player..we know stalberg can move...im interested...no hockey expert could tell you right now how that will turn out..have to see it in action

Mike (Chicago)

Besides Sharp and Hoss, which player do you think has been most impressive so far this season?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:34 PM)

I have to be honest, and of course expectations play a part but the way Kopecky has stood in front of the net has been impressive...those assists were all hard working ones BUT he has left some points on the ice...skille decent, stalberg as well...

Tank (Loop)

Did Q provide any more insight on the drastic line changes today? Specifically, why Kopy is playing center????

Jesse Rogers
  (2:36 PM)

Alot of similar questions about the lines..think Ive answered most of them..Kopy at center is to allow Sharp to play more offensive role at wing...he can conserve energy at that position..at least while he is hot...did a video with eddie o. today..should be up on the site soon if not already about this stuff...

Erik (San Francisco)

Any reason to panic yet? The way this team has lost games so far is REALLY frustrating. It's like I'm watch the Hockey version of the Chicago Cubs.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:38 PM)

No, I think there is good news..they have played one complete game, in columbus, and 3 of their stars (kane, toews, keith) have been so-so but they still have garnered some points...every game close and thats ok...new roster was bound to have growing pains

jon (chicago)

Why do you yell so much on the Saturday morning show on ESPN 1000?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:39 PM)

Cause my co-host is clueless...thats saturdays, including this one, from 7-9 am folks!

Frank (Naperville)

Will Keith have to wait until Campbell is back before he see's less then 30 minutes of ice a night?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:39 PM)

Probably

Mike (Mishawaka Indiana)

Jesse do you think it is fair for the Blackhawks to have so many games this early after comming off a Stanley Cup playoffs in June and have more games played then most of the league. I believe it is GREED of the NHL. What do you think?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:40 PM)

Not sure how its greed..it is bad timing...I assume a computer does all this...Not sure how the NHL benefits?? just means less games later

Sean (Homewood)

Do you think Skille is ready to breakout and have a great season

Jesse Rogers
  (2:41 PM)

Hmmm....good chance now..I like what he said about playing with toews and sharp..it cant just be all about getting them the puck..he has to play his game and play aggressive...I just dont know

Ryan (Iowa)

Toews and Kane really seem to know exactly where each other is at all times. Don't you think the Hawks are better when they are playing on the same line?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:42 PM)

The short answer is yes..and they probably will..again, its a process...coaches want to see diff combos so they know about things for later in the season as well...give it time

Pete (Europe)

Should Blackhawks fans be out on the ledge, with a lot of people saying they wont make the playoffs?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:42 PM)

I dont know a single (sane) person that thinks that..it is very early

Gibbs (Chicago)

I remember a few years ago Marty Havlat was skating on the 3rd line and doing pretty well. Do you think this experiment could work out and we may see more of this then just one game?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:43 PM)

Yes I can...again hard to define the lines right now in terms of 1-3...I mean does Kopy have to be number 2 and bolland number 3? I think its more about spreading things out and seeing what clicks

Curt (Chicago)

How is the team chemistry off the ice early this season? With all the traveling, I would assume the guys are starting develop some. Who is the new prankster on the team? Withouth Burish... someone needs to step up.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:43 PM)

Nothing yet...no time on the road..in and out..the circus trip and MAYBE this weekend halloween minny to NY might provide for some antics..i will ask sharp what he has planned

Tim (Lansing, IL)

What's up with Keith? He looks nothing like the guy who won the Norris last year.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:45 PM)

He would admit to a slow start...not sure, maybe the minutes, maybe pressing since soupy not there...maybe adjusting to seabs wanting to provide more offense though I asked him about that today and he said he didnt know seabs said thats what he wants to do...maybe just a slow start..hard to say

Paul (Chicago)

Im hearing some "quiet" rumors that Stan Bowman is searching for a solid defender... possibly Skille on the move? Is this true and if so, does it makes sense?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:46 PM)

I dont think he is searching so much as everyone knows they are thin on D and at center so you start the process of looking into it...yes, it would make sense if skille or another wing was moved cause that is where thet are deepest...morin, makarov, beach all waiting for a chance

Mike (Huntley)

Of the Hawks that were let go during the off season, who in your opinion has been doing the best for their new team?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:47 PM)

From what I can tell, its been Ladd...little bit of versteeg

Grant (Wheaton)

How much cap room would the Hawks have to make a move?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:47 PM)

Not much but it would depend on who goes...thats where the rrom would open up unless it was justa 500k guy

Curt (Chicago)

Sum up the season so far in 10 words or less.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:48 PM)

Star power and experience has gotten them points, need more

Chris (Lockport)

Who is a center in the Hawks have in the system that could come up and contribute?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:49 PM)

Not sure they have one ready...there is a guy in sweden Kruger that could help but hes not coming over..next yr

Jacob (Chicago, IL)

Hey Jesse, how come we have seen guys like Brandon Pirri and Evan Brophey up with the 'Hawks but not Igor Makarov or Kyle Beach? I know Jeremy Morin has been injured and thus has not been an option, but it was interesting to hear about Brophey being called up, especially with Makarov scoring game-winning goals over in Rockford.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:50 PM)

They play center...other guys are wings..sharp missed a game, they needed a center, kopy out, they went with a center cause they wanted sharp at wing...also, they go by who deserves it at the time..and i think they thought those guys did

Kevin (Lockport)

What does anyone see in Bickell? He posses stone hands and can't pass. He has a nice shot but needs to stop the puck before shooting. I never got why the 4th line was Bickell, Dowell, Pisani from the get go.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:51 PM)

You mean you dont know whay the 4th line WASNT those guys I assume?? Bickell has been ok..had those 2 goals in first two games and not much since but i dont disagree, right now, that should be the 4th line..need to see him more agressive, etc.

Mike (Chicago)

Who are some leaders on this team that aren't wearing the C or A's on their jersey. Last year we had madden, seabs, and ladd. Anyone standing out as another leader on this team or will that take time?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:53 PM)

I think Turco to an extent though hes not asserting himself too much cause hes new and its early...hossa is always respected but doesnt say much...its mostly those guys you mentioned

Jon (Genoa)

Following the big line shake up, which grouping are you most looking forward to seeing in action tonight?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:54 PM)

Hard to say one over the other...in some ways, all 3 lines...skille?? Kopy at center? and bolly with kane and stalberg...all intiguing...cant pick one

Scott (Chicago Suburb)

I'm confused on when the chat starts. Why does the site say, "Click here to submit questions and come back at 1 p.m. to follow the chat." but this page says, "join the chat Wednesday at noon CT/1 p.m. ET"? We're in the Central Time Zone. Why does Eastern Time zone even need to be mentioned?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:56 PM)

Must have been a mistake and we do have a lot of people joining from other time zones...should have said 2 pm est this week..sorry..follow me on twitter...@espnchihawks..I always give the correct time...plus need like 450 followers to reach 5000! think twitter gives you a certificate

Fitz (My Cube)

Jesse, why is there such an uproar from fans about this line shake up? I mean we are 10 games in, the lines will change many more times and also 99% of us don't get to see them practice so i don't see the reason for all the panic/reactions. Unless I am missing something?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:57 PM)

No Im with you...I think there are probably a lot of new fans and they may not realize this happens every year with every team..remember a coach cant play, there is only two real things he can do...change the lines and dole out playing time so when things go stale, its one of those 2 things..plus it CAN give new energy to players or lines and you never know when or where...these changes were pretty dramatic

Grant (Wheaton)

If you had to guess, who will be the Hawks 6th defensemen at the end of the season? Someone on the team now, someone in the minors or a trade?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:58 PM)

Hmm..I would say someone not on the team...probably a trade.. cause not that hard to get a number 6 like they did with boynton last year and i know hendry and scott havent lit the world on fire

Taylor (Chicago)

Do you see John Scott getting moved at some point this season?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:59 PM)

I dont think so..still has that intimidation power and unless a team is dying for that, what will you get anyway...i just see him as he is, in and out of the lineup..foward and defense depending on the opponent

Andrew (Downers Grove)

Does Toews make anything of his traditionally slow starts? Seems that he is getting more chances early on, is he feeling any pressure?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:00 PM)

Cant pinpoint anything..but yes, he feels it..he wants his numbers to be up, especially the goals

Grant (Wheaton)

Which player from last year's team are you looking forward to talking to when his team meets up with the Hawks?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:01 PM)

My man Buff late next week! Interview wise, nobody better than madden this saturday

Kurt (Chicago)

With the line changes has there been any mention of changes to special teams? The Kills especially.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:02 PM)

No changes there...all the same as far as I could tell..they only had one practice really

Jerry (Chicago)

Out of all the teams in our division, which one should we be most worried about? I would assume it comes down to Nashville and Detroit, but St. Louis is proving to be a young and upcoming team, your thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:03 PM)

Definitely det. but the other two are scrappy for sure..still thikn st. louis has some growing to do..but nash is always there..love trotz

Chuck (Naperville)

Jesse-any changes to the PP lines? I hate Bolland on the point for the second PP group, they tried it last year and it didn't work then and doesn't look any better now. When Campbell is back does he take that spot? Thanks.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:05 PM)

I dont disagree with you..I would say maybe on the Bolland thing when soup comes back...if bolland stays, would have to be for seabrook or maybe bolland goes back to forward and someone else comes out...but i do agree with you

mike (chicago)

Will Troy Brouwer be dropped to 3rd or 4th line or a healthy scratch if he doesn't score soon?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:06 PM)

Its just not about scoring..he started the season on the third line...but yes, hes in jeopardy of being "demoted" if his play doesnt get more noticeable out there...no extra forwards so would be hard to see him sit for john scott but you never know if a message wants to be sent it could happen...he does have 6 assists so hes been around the puc but he does need to be mroe aggressive and rely on his abilities...

Jesse Rogers
  (3:08 PM)

Thats going to do it for this week...Thanks for the great questions..I like what Q did, if nothing else to give us something to look forward to for tonight and talk about...maybe something clicks...maybe kopy is the next gretzky..or maybe not..anyway follow mre on twitter @espnchihawks and of course my blog...you can email me at jrogers@espnchicago.com...talk to you next week. enjoy the game tonight
