Fantasy Injuries w/Stephania Bell

Stephania Bell
  (3:02 PM)

Welcome everyone - wow, it's been an eventful 24 hours -for injury news that is...I'm sure you have some good questions and thoughts ready. Let's get to 'em.

Dr. Mark (NFL M.A.S.H. Unit )

So how long should we wait for Romo? Waivers run tonight, so I gotta make plans for this week and going forward. Should I try to open up another spot to add a QB, or just replace Romo?

Stephania Bell
  (3:04 PM)

Dr. Mark: You ask a question on behalf of many. So the word is that Romo will not need surgery. 6 weeks for fracture to heal - assuming all goes well - but can't see him cleared to return before 8 weeks, again assuming all goes well. I say move on right now - even if Romo comes back to play this season - which he may not, he's not gonna help your fantasy team.

Mike (Madison, WI)

Let an hour of Romo questions begin! Actually, I'm curious about Reggie Bush. Is he set to go?

Stephania Bell
  (3:07 PM)

Mike: Well, we took care of Romo right off the bat so we move on to Reggie. He's going to practice Weds for the first time since the injury. I think he has a lot to show his coach -and himself - before he can get back in lineup. He has a chance to get back this wk-end but it's Pittsburgh. We'll see. Feel much better about chances for next week.

Chad (Atlanta)

Bonus pts for being early?.... Any reason to think Stafford doesn't go on Sunday? And how effective is he likely to be?

Stephania Bell
  (3:09 PM)

Chad: Bonus points indeed. I think Stafford will probably play this weekend, barring some unusual setback. When Hill got hurt, they were already lookiing at the week after the bye and it just brought it into focus. Might be a little rusty from lack of game play, but he's also physically likely to be fresh from not getting beaten up the last few weeks.

Joe (Cocoa Beach, FL)

Hey stephanie Bad News! Whats the bad news on Antonio Gates's toe and or ankle? He still can produce on one wheel but I am going for a championship this year and I need him. Tired of finishing 3rd, Thanks and good work.

Stephania Bell
  (3:13 PM)

Thanks Joe. I hate third place too, but second might be worse. Gates confessed that he had to take a painkilling injection in order to play last week and the toe was a big problem (as fantasy owners saw). My concern will be how long this lingers - just how severe is it? Sounds worse than we were initially told. Chargers have a bye in Wk 10 and I don't see it getting tons better beforehand but sounds like they plan to use him, even in limited capacity unless he really worsens.

Leif (Los Angeles)

Steve Smith's ankle ok? heard he left the game because of it

Stephania Bell
  (3:15 PM)

Leif: Actually what happened was that he got cramps and went to the locker room for an IV. Apparently no reports of anything happening to his ankle which is good news. We'll see whether he's limited in practice at all but I don't expect it.

Bo (Denver)

what's your expectation for Alex Smith? I think EVERYONE wants him to be healthy enough to play, except the Broncos.

Stephania Bell
  (3:16 PM)

Bo: It's hard to know what to wish for in SF these days...other than the GIants to win the series!!Matt Maiocco reporting from London that Smith was diagnosed with an AC sprain (now confirmed). No info as to degree of injury or timetable so no real indicator as to status for Sunday yet. Hopefully by time they begin practices that will change.

Matt (Pennsylvania)

Hurting bad at running back how long can I expect to be without Joseph Addai?

Stephania Bell
  (3:19 PM)

Matt: That is a good question right now but with Indy being on a bye last week (and being super-duper secretive as it is) we have no further info - the last thing Addai said was he hoped to be ready for Monday night 11/1 but made no promises

Mike (Work...kinda)

What is with Wes Welker? Is it the lose of Moss or the injury lingering? I am thinking about benching him as my WR2 behind Reggie Wayne. Too early to put Mike "The X" Williams in for him?

Stephania Bell
  (3:21 PM)

Mike: It has been a little disappointing but there were some who predicted that the loss of Moss would have this effect on Welker. No reports of the injury being an issue -and I'm not inclined to think he's gone backwards physically - but not sure when you can expect re-emergence of Welker. And Mike Williams getting hotter for time being.

Drew (KC)

Is Steven Jackson not the toughest man on earth? He played through a groin injury and now possibly a broken/surgically repaired finger!

Stephania Bell
  (3:22 PM)

Drew: He is nothing if not tough as nails. And we didn't even notice that he had this broken finger, apparently the result of a pileup. He had two pins out in, then tweeted that he shouldn't "miss a beat." It's the ring finger on his left hand - and he carries mostly with the right, so I believe him. Wouldn't keep me away from playing him at all.

Daniel (Denton, Texas)

Any news on DeAngelo Williams' foot?

Stephania Bell
  (3:25 PM)

Daniel: Originally we were told it wasn't serious, then coach Fox said at Monday news conf that he's day-to-day. Don't like that. Makes me suspect we're headed into a week of him not practicing, then maybe limited, then q...

Cliff (Asheville, NC)

Please give a Lions fan some good news!!Any word on Matthew Stafford's shoulder, Calvin Johnson's shoulder and Jahvid Best's toes?

Stephania Bell
  (3:27 PM)

Cliff: Well, we talked Stafford earlier. Best apparently did side running today, not team practice (tells me they're still being a little cautious with the toe even after the bye). Sounds like C Johnson was in practice today. He managed pretty well in that last game before bye so expect him to be in good shape this wk-end.

Thor (SF)

Do you have enough confidence in Desean Jackson's health to deal Cedric Benson for him? This assumes I have rb depth, of course...

Brian (WA)

What's are you hearing about Anothony Gonzalez? Does he play this week?

Stephania Bell
  (3:30 PM)

Thor: No. Not that I have reason to believe he won't return. It's just that he's still got some big hurdles to cross and I wouldn't want to trade this early. Now there is some good news that he reportedly passed "concussion tests" but we haven't seen him return to practice, etc and if his symptoms return when he resumes activity he could be in limbo there for a while. Or he could be back shortly. But still in questionable state as far as I'm concerned.

Stephania Bell
  (3:32 PM)

Brian: We heard reports that Gonzalez had suffered a setback to his ankle but at the start of this week Gonzalez put that to rest. Told Indy reporters he had no idea where that came from. Went on to say he was progressing well and expected to be playing Monday night. I'd like to see him back in full practice this week, but good to know he at least has not gone backwards.

Michael (Miami)

Hi Stephania, how bad is Malcom Floyd's hamstring? And when can we expect him back close to 100 percent? Thanks

Stephania Bell
  (3:34 PM)

Michael: bad enough that we're already hearing he's not expected this week. Tells you it's a decent strain so you start getting concerned about how long it will take until he returns to full strength. Can't give you a projection since he's doing nothing yet.

mike (NJ)

Hey Steffy (hopefully "Good News") anything on the Colts RB situation. I picked up Hart and Brown and need to drop one tonight...who would you drop? thx

Stephania Bell
  (3:36 PM)

Mike: Well, I can't tell you about this week b/c no reports yet and with a Monday night game, we won't get one until Thurs. Brown did do some work in Week 6 but ultimately they decided he was not quite ready for prime time. Have to think he's getting closer and I think if healthy they go to him, not Hart.

Josh (Billings, MT)

Any chance Pierre Thomas goes this week?

Stephania Bell
  (3:38 PM)

Josh: Suppose there's a chance but based on all the grumblings we're hearing out of N.O., not yet. I think the latest thought was that Week 9 seemed more realistic (but of course 10 is their bye so if still struggling might not be until afterward). Sounds like a lot of frustration there, but just think how mad fantasy owners would be if he played (like M Turner last year) but couldn't finish or had terrible stats. At least so far this year there's been enough warning to sub for him.

Brian (Stl)

How long do you think it takes Collie comes back? and will he take back his spot from Garcon when he does?

Stephania Bell
  (3:41 PM)

Brian: We don't know what Collie had done - other than thumb surgery - and that's wide open. So until he's practicing, no idea. The Colts did tell us it would be several weeks so the hint is replace him for at least a few. I do expect him to still get solid action, whether he replaces Garcon Im not sure I can say just yet - may be a function of how long he ends up being out.

Bill (Chicago)

Any update on Max Hall's status for this weekend?

Stephania Bell
  (3:41 PM)

Bill: Sounds like the Cards expect to have him this week. Check back later in the week.

Sam (SF)

With Stafford coming off of an injury, and Romo down, would you play Kitna against the terrible Jags? Those cowboys still have a ton of weapons... Or would you roll with Fitzpatrick?

Stephania Bell
  (3:42 PM)

Sam: Fitzpatrick. He's been putting up some great numbers. Cowboys may implode.

Matt (Ohio)

Any word on Dustin Keller's Hand?

Stephania Bell
  (3:43 PM)

Matt: Have never seen a report on what came from the MRI...but your note reminds me to check that out this week.

Matt (Denver)

How did Moreno look back from injury (ignoring all the other aspects of that game) and do you see this as a running game back in swing in Denver?

Stephania Bell
  (3:45 PM)

Matt: Yes, well, there were lots of other things to ignore...but the good news is that after Moreno's first game back, and with decent ypc, he was not on the injury report last week. So far, things are looking good, but I still consider him a little risky given the history. Not enough to keep him out of my lineup, just enough to be on edge.

Anita (D)

Heck with Romo, Gates, etc!! Lets talk Defensive players Steph...I have the Steelers D, and I think Aarons Smiths injury is terrible news for this unit. He's not on IR, but can you really expect him back this year? How bad are tricep tears, its not a common injury? Thanks

Stephania Bell
  (3:47 PM)

Anita: OK - defensive player request answereed. It is terrible news - but they'll have to figure it out without him. He's had the surgery. I don't see him coming back this year but they may be waiting to see if they need to use the roster spot and how playoff hopes look before making the move. I do think he ends up there.

Travis (Omaha)

Breston was a late scratch last week. Any news saying he will be good to go this week or should I just keep him stashed away?

Stephania Bell
  (3:49 PM)

Travis; Given that we thought up until gameday that he might play last week, I think we'll get more of the same this week. In other words, I think they'll see how he looks, how he does in practice before deciding.

Mike (Louisville)

Favre fractured his ankle and his heel. How do these injuries impact his and the Vikings seasons?

Stephania Bell
  (3:53 PM)

Mike: Basically you took an already problem ankle and made it worse. He has to be in a decent amount of pain. They'll try and offload the heel for the majority of the week but at some point they need to see if he can function well enough to play. They probably test it some Thursday. Hard to imagine Brett sitting voluntarily. As far as the season, this is not going to improve dramatically as the season goes on. Fractures get better by not putting weight on them...but he seems to defy all odds when it looks like he shouldn't. Not sure he'll be terribly effective, but have to believe he tries to go.

Brett (Raleigh, NC)

Steffi Bad News (or, from here on forth, just SBN) - any defenses really hurting this week we need to stay away from?

Stephania Bell
  (3:54 PM)

Brett: Interesting q - esp since Green Bay is taking the obvious big hits on defense. Still managing to make plays, not sure I'd say stay away from. But they recently have dealt with the most consecutive big losses.

Diego (Chicago)

What is the risk of aggravating the injury with Michael Vick? Is it mostly a pain-management thing for him from here on out?

Stephania Bell
  (3:56 PM)

Diego: You got it. It is really a pain management issue for Vick as this is not likely to get fully better in season. The hope is that by the time he's on the field and taking hits, he's healed enough to not be dealt a severe setback. We'll see.

Rob (Wrigleyville)

Wear and tear question... With Torain not used to this type of load, do you see him wearing down or continuing at this blistering pace? Thanks!

Stephania Bell
  (3:58 PM)

Rob: He's still young - and he's had some big time injuries - but you consider then that he's had less wear and tear than others b/c he hasn't been on the field a ton. No particular reason to worry about him...yet.

brian wilson (att park)

what are your expectations for sidney rice when he returns? Will he be 100% at some point or will the hip problem linger?

Stephania Bell
  (4:00 PM)

Brian: Better deliver a WIN (or save). Hard to know b/c he's been sort of kept out of view. We heard about a week ago that he was three weeks away but haven't been given much in the way of specifics. Assume surgery addressed the problem so he should come back long as no one is rushing him (and so far that does not seem to be the case).

fred (florida)

Please Stephania, I am begging for help. Sorry another Romo owner: Would you pick up Kitna over any of these to replace Romo: Stafford, Hassy, Sanchez, Palmer, Fitzpatrick, Cassell, Garrard? Thank You

Stephania Bell
  (4:01 PM)

Fred: No. Like Fitzpatrick, Stafford better easy.

Stephania Bell
  (4:01 PM)

OK - time for me to go. Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope to have much more for you as the week goes on. PLease stop back in Friday at the same time. See you then.
