Still waiting for Derek Jeter to heal the sick and give sight to the blind here ... then we can start the chat.
Is there anyway the Brewers would accept a deal of Jonathan Sanchez, Pablo Sandoval, Brandon Belt and Ryan Verdugo for Prince Fielder?
I wanted to say no when I first saw this, just because it smells like a quantity-for-quality deal, but Belt is a legitimate prospect, an above-average 1b who could start by midyear if not sooner, and Sanchez is what the Brewers have been totally inept at developing for the last ten years. It's not really that crazy when you think about it.
Building upon their success, shouldn't the Giants make a serious play on Crawford this offseason? There isn't a player who is more suited for their ballpark.
I agree. I'd rather sign Crawford and put Belt at first than sign Huff and Burrell.
Please tell me the Jeter-NYY negotiations will get ugly...seems like an odd start.
Buster is very plugged into that side and he seems to think it will get ugly.
Is Hosmer just tired? AFL showing is not impressing...
Ignore AFL stats. They are meaningless. And Hosmer is very young and has been playing pretty much nonstop since the end of February.
Fellow Mets fans seem to think Duda and spare parts is enough to get Garza...absurd correct?
Klaw's impact on MLB's top 100 FA cannot be overstated. Moreover, no anaylyst embodies the spirit of a champion more than Keith Law. When can we expect the list? Thanks
Saturday night at midnight. The top 30 reports are written and ranked already.
What would be a reasonable contract for Huff -- that both sides would be happy with? Also, not a question, but in September I had a dream that Sabean offered Burrell a 4 year / $64M contract. This is the fear Giants fans live with.
What if I told you the price of winning the World Series was giving Burrell that contract and Huff 3/$36MM? You'd still take it, right?
Does some of your scout-speak ever carry over into your personal life? For instance, do you ever find yourself telling (or thinking) that the meal your wife cooked was fringy? Have you ever referred to Sid the Science Kid as toolsy? Have you ever considered mowing your lawn in more than one plane? Have you finished a book and given it a 70 for creativity, but only a 40 for style? Just wondering...
All the time. I find myself grading all kinds of things.
Are you enjoying all the "Brian Sabean built a great team" articles?
I thought Jeff Passan's piece was excellent: This all happened because they were so poorly run earlier in the decade. And one point I'd add is that they were in position to take crazy fliers on Torres, Huff, and Burrell because they spent so little on the draft in the early 2000s and didn't have internal options. I think it's fair to credit Sabean with assembling this team while acknowledging the fact that he didn't have a great run between '02 and '10.
Do you think replacing Pendleton was the right move in Atlanta?
Any thoughts on the Ricciardi hire?
I understand why everyone is asking, but I am not making any comment on it. Sorry.
How is anyone knocking Sabean? He was told to build a team around Bonds. Ever since then he has been pretty successful with his draft picks. No one has nailed 1st round picks like he has. Lincicum, Cain, Posey, Bumgardner.
Because the GM doesn't make first round picks, certainly not all by himself and often isn't involved at all. If you want to credit him for those, credit him for putting together the staff that made those picks, from Dick Tidrow to John Barr to Doug Mapson on down the line.
Lots of talk about Jeremey Jeffress this AFL season. Bottom line, should the Brewers try him in the rotation next year and where does his future probably lie?
Reliever, for a variety of reasons. But a chance to be elite.
Sox just picked up option on Big Papi. Good move?
Why does every keep questioning whether Cliff Lee should have pitched to Edgar Renteria, I mean it's not like it's Cliff Lee pitching to Albert Pujols. Pretty sure you go after him, not walk him...
I agree. I had no problem with having Lee attack Renteria - he made a brutal 2-0 pitch. (And the 0-2 to Uribe was unforgivable. He should have thrown that pitch somewhere in Waco and Uribe still would have chased it.)
Did I miss the MVP and Cy Young award announements? When do those happen?
Starts next week, I think.
Keith, how much do you THINK the Yankees should offer and how much do you THINK Jeter will ask for? Jeter is the Yankees brand so I don't think he can just sign with another team and justify that he's worth around $20 million per year to them. Isn't Jeter sort of handcuffed here? Or am I just spewing BS...
I agree - his leverage is really limited here. And the fact that the Yankees are so popular right now reduces it further - there's no reason to believe losing Jeter will hurt revenues as long as the team remains a 90+ win playoff contender.
Days like today(and the next 6 months) are why people like me moved from MA to AZ. Just saying......
Yeah, I could get used to this fast.
What is the scouting report on Ryan Flaherty? Is he a big league regular? what position will he play in the Majors?
Possibly third base. Type of guy who'll play a little above his tools because his feel for the game and instincts are so good. But I'm concerned he'll end up a bench guy because he's so bad vs LHP - not only are the numbers bad, but he looks horrible against them.
Its cold and pouring in MA. Tomorrow too. No need to rub it in.
The First Take guys were telling me. I'm just debating switching to shorts after the chat and putting on some sunscreen.
Will you get to some food questions later in the chat?
Yep, storing up the food-books-games stuff for later. And we can talk about how Top Chef Just Desserts hit a new low last night, too.
Hey Keith. In your opinion, who should be starting at 2B for the Rockies next year? (Full disclosure: I am well aware of the fact that Jim Tracy will pick the wrong guy and leave him there until August.)
I'd like to see what Chris Nelson could do there. I don't see Herrera or Young as starter caliber, and while Nelson probably isn't either, at least he has a chance.
Do you think the Yankees owe Jeter for his past services? I feel like it's different than Pujols' next contract, because Pujols has been severely underpaid compared to market value with his last contract. Can't exactly say the same about the captain...
No. And since players don't typically give discounts after they've been wildly overpaid, I don't see why that would matter anyway.
This piece on CNBC's website http://bit.ly/9qxAlT says that if the Yankees offer Cliff Lee 5 yrs at $120M Texas can offer 5 yrs at $111M and it would be the same net once NY taxes are accounted for. Do players and their agents pay attention to this?
Of course they do. It was an issue in Toronto because Canadian taxes are so high. (This was a chronic argument between me and Ricciardi; I argued it was strictly financial, but he said - I believe he said this publicly - that players didn't want to come play in Canada. I think one look around the streets of Toronto in the summer time would convince any player, especially a single player, that Toronto is an awesome place to play.)
I meant to add: Any chance of another scout for charity date in the future?
I offered to do one for Phoenix Children's Hospital but they never got back to me. I'll do another one at some point, though.
Descalso or Schumacker?
I like Descalso.
Nats passed on option for Adam Kennedy. Is Danny Espinosa an MLB 2B at this point? Is he ready for 140 games? What's his ceiling?
I'd put Espinosa at SS and Desmond at 2B. That's their best defensive alignment, and while I don't love Espinosa's bat at least it maximizes his value and the pair would cost under $1 million.
You must have to dip yourself in sunscreen right?
I do have that Irish skin going. I get some funny looks at games when I'm applying a second or third coat but it beats the hell out of a sunburn (or another bad report from the dermatologist).
Keith, Good call in the Angels New Scouting Director Ric Wilson. What can you tell us about him?
One of the most respected evaluators in the business, especially of pitchers. Tireless worker, too - there is a small group of cross-checkers who I seem to see all the time, especially on that summer circuit, and he's one of them.
What do you make of Ackley's AFL performance? Will he compete for obp titles and hit 20 homers?
Again, ignore the performance. Love the bat, 20 HR might be a ceiling, but he'll hit for average and get on base at high clips. Still an unfinished product at 2b.
Have you had a chance to see Jared Mitchell post-injury? Have your thoughts on his ceiling changed at all?
Seen him a few games, definitely rusty, but the body looks good - he stayed in shape despite the off year.
J.Zimmermann, Espinosa, Burgess, Detwiler for Greinke? Does this work for both sides?
It certainly works for Washington.
If you could contract 2 teams, which teams would they be?
I'd add, rather than contract. Although I do wonder if baseball's best long-term strategy is to expand outside the U.S. - adding two teams inside the U.S. won't do a lot to increase industry revenues on the whole. Of course, that leaves the question of "where," but what if the Cuba embargo is finally lifted and that country starts to modernize rapidly? You think an MLB team in Havana would do some business?
There was a sporcle quiz recently about the top hitters in 2010 and I was surprised to see that Daric Barton was in the top ten in OBP this year. Has he always had such a patient eye at the plate?
Yes, it's his main skill and why he's so valuable despite limited power.
Hey Keith, do you see Matt Rizzoti as a regular 1st baseman in the Major Leagues?
How many 'untouchables' minor league players do I have? Is it just Freeman and Teheran?
No on Rizzotti.
No way on Freeman. Teheran probably, but that would be it in their system.
Can Derek Jeter's impact be overstated?
Quite easily, as it turns out.
Are you back on the Bumgarner wagon?
I think he's getting overrated again. The odds of him improving from here are pretty slim unless his old velocity returns - but what he is today is pretty good, especially if he keeps throwing that breaking ball for strikes as he did in game 4.
Ben Revere has a .328 and .390 career BA and OBP and averages 40 SB a year in the Minors. When is Juan Pierre Jr. going to get a shot with the big club?
Another year? I worry about better fastballs eating him up since he has so little power, but even at .290/.350/.370 he'd be valuable because of + defense in center.
Does Wilmer Flores still project as a SS in your eyes or more of a corner infielder. If that's the case do you think that could influence the Mets on whether or not to give Jose Reyes an extension or is it too soon to know?
Flores has never projected as a SS - he MIGHT be a 3b, and might be a LF.
I don't get the fascination and obsession with what the Yankees are going to pay Jeter. I doesn't make a bit of difference in the Yankees' financial situaiton or their ability to make aggressive offers to anyone. The guy has played hard, played well and been positive asset to both the Yankees and MLB. Both sides know they benefit from a continued, respectful relationship, and both sides are too smart to jeopardize that.
I believe they're close to the luxury tax, to the point where overpaying for Jeter could raise the marginal cost of paying for Cliff Lee by 40% per dollar. I could have that wrong but I remember reading that a few weeks back. Besides, it's tailor made for talk radio.
Keith lets test your "probably" untouchable tag on Teheran for ATL. Do you include him in a him for Rasmus or even Greinke? I hate to see him go, but ATL does have a ton of pitching depth in the minors.
And if you think about it, how often should a minor league arm be untouchable? They all get hurt. Even guys with clean medicals and good deliveries get hurt. If you can flip a good arm for a great bat who's ready now, that's usually a good tradeoff.
Could the Nats sign Vazquez and Lee and make a playoff run in 2012?
I think Vazquez is hurt - velocity was down all year.
Klaw, Jay Bruce is now eligible as a Super 2 - shouldn't it be a priority for the Reds to extend him ASAP? I fear they've already waited too long on Votto.
I would try to extend him because I think his performance is about to improve substantially, and there's a real chance to capture some cost savings rather than just getting cost certainty.
Just curious on if you think the Cubs have enough in their farm system to get Adrian Gonzalez, and if they do, what would it take to get him?
I don't think so - it'd be more of a quantity offer than a quality one. Not a bad system, just doesn't have that one impact guy.
Do you think Belt will be on the opening day roster or is he going to get Poseyed? Should he be?
I could argue either way. This isn't a Posey situation.
The Yankees need a young centerfielder. Would the Angels trade Mike Trout for Austin Romine and Pat Venditte
Best. Question. Ever.
What happened to Russel Martin? He went from a gold glove and silver slugging catcher to barely a backup. Do you see soemthing from a scouts perspective that caused this decline?
He's regressed physically.
True or False: Posey is already the second best catcher in baseball.
Including defense? I might go true.
If the Cubs include Marmol in a deal for Gonzo does it lighten the "quantity" load of if you're the Cubs Marmol's almost untouchable?
He's a reliever who a lot of people think is headed for an inevitable arm injury, and given his walk rate this year I don't think his value is THAT high.
When is Hendry going to lose his job and have you take over?
Hendry keeping his job has to be the front-office surprise of the fall. Most people I talked to in the industry were certain Ricketts would axe him once the season ended.
Brian McCann is still better than Posey
Not if you factor in receiving and throwing.
I would rather have Carlos Santana.
I think that's the debate, rather than Posey vs McCann.
What is the percentage of homer trade offers you get posted on here? I'll trade my teams fifth, sixth, eighth and tenth best prospect for your superstar, who says no?
Far more than I post, but that one was just hilarious. I don't know what's funnier - thinking Trout was available, or thinking Venditte has trade value?
Saw from a recent article by Never that Tony Seigle, Giant's Sr Advisor, was quoted saying, "We've shown Moneyball is a bunch of garbage". Granted the team just won a WS and earns the right to talk a little, but foolish chest-bumping to their cross bay rivals? I dunno, great pitching staff and undervalued hitters seems a lot like the teams that were built in Oakland (only SF has more payroll and a bevy of Top 10 picks from their bad years).
Given that Siegle had little to do with actually assembling that team, it seemed both an unprofessional comment and an inappropriate one. If Sabean said that, or Tidrow or Barr, I could at least defend it on the grounds that each of those men held direct responsibility for players on the roster. But it's not something the office amanuensis should be saying, and no matter who said it, it's classless to celebrate your own historic victory by trashing another uninvolved organization.
I have no idea about either one of those guys but Trout was BA 85 before last year and Romine was 86. Seems close to me but Im guessing by your reaction Trout has a bit more value.
I had Trout 49 and Romine not on the top 100. Since then, Romine has had more trouble receiving, and Trout has jumped to #1.
What does Alderson do this year? Seems like avoiding FA's, sitting tight, getting ready for the draft (convincing ownership to go above slot) maybe add a few back of the rotation arms is the way to go, no?
Agreed. They need to build the right way, as opposed to half-build half-patch.
Do you realize most of the people here have no idea what "amanuensis" means?
The Internet is a great place to look up information like the definition of a word. And you are, in fact, on the Internet RIGHT NOW.
Would the Indians have enough in their system to get Ackley or is that just out of the question that Seattle would move him?
Why would Seattle want to trade Ackley? That's the question to ask yourself before cooking up an offer. The M's aren't in contender mode where they're dealing their prospects. They're building.
The Phillies should sign Webb, greatest rotation ever if healthy?
Not healthy. Not likely to be healthy.
You said last week that Lincecum wanted $2 mil from the Indians when they drafted him. You seemed to agree with the Indians not giving that to him. Did his projection increase that much in a year that he wasn't worth $2 mil then but more 1 year later or was everybody just wrong on him?
He made pretty significant strides with his command and control in that junior year.
Can Justin DeFratus be an elite reliever or is he more of a good middle reliever?
Good middle guy, at least right now.
Hey Keith,What is your assessment of Ryan Lavarnway and his performance in the AFL? He has put up a very good OBP (.413) in limited ABs. Can he stick behind the plate?
I don't think he can stay behind the dish. Too big and stiff.
Do you get offers to do podcasts? If so, why don't you do more of them?
I've said yes just about every time I've been asked.
Posey as the second best C in baseball? Did Brian McCann suddenly retire or something? Last I checked he'd actually become quite good defensively (was already good blocking balls, now he's earning runs with his arm as well) and the bat is just great for the position, leading him to another 5+ WAR season this year. Its amazing how underrated he still is.
Posey had a higher wOBA and is a far better receiver (I'm sorry to burst your homer bubble but McCann struggles behind the plate). I'm not underrating McCann. I'm correctly rating him.
Thoughts on Burgess in the AFL. He's still young, but does he have the tools to become an everyday OF, or has he been overhyped within the Nats system? Thanks.
Not an everyday guy. Big raw power, don't see it playing with his current pull-happy chase-breaking-balls approach.
I know you are not a fan of batting average due to its flaws. Why don't you create a statistic that you feel is relevant, taking out sac flies, etc.?
I did. Take the total times the hitter reached base safely of his own accord (H + BB HBP). Divide it by total plate appearances, excluding SH (so AB BB HBP SF). You'll get a number that represents the frequency with which the hitter did not make an out. I call it "on base percentage."
Chance's A.A. flips an arm or two for Rasmus?
If Rasmus is really available, I'd have to think the Cards would want a bat back before an arm. They have three good starters already.
Who is the fastest RH batter you've seen from home to 1st? Is Trout in the discussion? (I was amazed watching a RC game this summer)
Trout is the answer.
Earlier this season I asked you "Latos or Bumgarner, who is better long term?" and you said Latos. I realize that MadBum is over valued right now b/c of his WS performance, but taking his Sept & Oct #s into consideration (1.95 FIP, 1.09 WHIP) and Latos' dismal end of season, have you changed your mind at all?
KLaw, is Zach Cox's struggles in the AFL a sign of things to come, or is the rust just thick on his swing? And what position does he rate better at: 2B or 3B?
Guy barely played from June 1 to October 12. Cut him some slack. I think 3B is the best option.
Is Brian Sabean just Dayton Moore in the NL with money?
We're about a year away from a moratorium on Dayton Moore jokes.
Klaw, what's your opinion of the McRib?
That commercial is nauseous. You see all that disgusting, high fructose corn syrupy sauce dripping off the side? Did it ever occur to anyone that they use that much sauce to hide the inferior quality of the meat?
Any glaring omissions in the AFL Stars Game this Saturday?
You mean like Bryce Harper?
How much impact can a minor league pitching coordinator have? The Mets seem like a system where secondary pitches and command go to die. Any hope that some of these live arms will turn into something with new blood in the organization, especially Harvey, Mejia, and Familia?
In my opinion, those minor league coordinators are very important - or can be, if they're good. They can instruct, and they can oversee instruction in a way a farm director or player development director can't.
Heard that Revere ran a 3.7 to first. True?
On a bunt, maybe.
Brandon Laird is having a nice fall in the AFL after a surprising season; is he a legit prospect in the OF? Or is he a 4A slugger like Shelly Duncan who is a bench bat who Ks too much?
What is your biggest processed food guilty pleasure? Twinkies, nacho cheese sauce, you get the idea.
Oreos. Although they were better with the trans fats. I won't buy them though because I can eat a whole sleeve at a sitting.
Food question time? How do you feel about putting a fried egg on a burger?
Not opposed but it feels like overkill to me. My favorite unusual burger topping, by far, is avocado.
Keith, when players thank the fans and say that they atmosphere made a difference to them, do you think its just the spirit of the moment, or something real? Thanks for answering.
I think it's the right thing to say, and it probably makes the job more fun.
I went to Plein Sud in NYC two weeks ago. It's Ed Cotton's restaurant (he's Ed from this past season of Top Chef). I highly suggest going and getting the skate. Best dish in the city
Nice. I need to start checking out some TC restaurants when I travel in the spring.
Have you been to Pittsburgh and eaten at Primanti Bros? Talk about a guilty food pleasure.
Kieth please help me out!! I am trying to decide if I should keep Michael Taylor on my Minor League roster. What are you seeing out there in Arizona? His numbers look almost as bad as they did during the season. Will he ever revert back to his 2009 form?
Doesn't look much better here but I won't counsel you to give up on him.
Speaking of food, I know you love Florence, any recommendations? I already ate gelato for breakfast, but it was served on a waffle
Sadly, my wife and I have long forgotten the name of the little place in Florence where we had one of the best meals of our lives. But you're in the gelato capital of Italy so just walk away from the duomo and eat it anywhere where the banana gelato is slightly grey rather than yellow. And go to Siena and eat at Il Gallo Nero.
That will not get you invited back! Of course why would you want to come here anyway. No relevant baseball that i know of.
Still my favorite stadium.
When does the 2011 draft prospect talk start heating up?
I just sketched out a spring schedule for the top college guys. Lot of home games for me + trips to San Diego and Vegas. Win.
sliced avocado, cheese, crisp bacon, ranch dressing, done. there's your burger. Think it's a mistake for the Jays to let all of Downs, Frasor, and Gregg walk for the comp picks (assuming Type A Frasor actually gets signed)?
Not sure they'll get picks for all those guys, but no, not a mistake to let relievers walk.
Do you watch Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives? If so, do you seek out some of those restaurants when you travel?
Don't watch it, but I have hit two of the places he's hit and liked both. Two more within a mile or so of our apartment here so I need to get busy.
Red Robin burgers? Yea or nay?
Just moved to LA - any recommendations on good, availble west coast microbrews?
Thomas Kemper & Deschutes are two breweries I like, but my experience out here is limited so far.
Top Chef Just Desserts? Are you done with Team Diva? Hate them!
The producers really blew it by overemphasizing Team Diva (really? "Team Diva?" They're making Project Runway look like Top Gear) and whiffing on Eric's story, a baker who discovered new skills and gained confidence as the show went on. When they showed his exit interview I felt like I'd been dropped into the last ten pages of a good novel. They focused on the wrong story. Oh, and Eric was right - the guest judge *was* rude.
If AFL stats are, as you say, meaningless. How do you evaluate performance?
I'm not focusing on performance, but on skills and approach. It's a great scouting league, but small samples and inconsistent competition (some good pitching, but a lot of garbage to fill out rosters, for example) really limit the utility of those stats.
Any thoughts on Brandon Guyer?
Extra guy, maybe just a good org guy. Can't find a scout who's a fan.
What is that rum you recommended a long while back? I can't remember it for the life of me. I believe it was dark and kind of syrupy.
Goslings Black Seal? Or Cruzan Black Strap? Both excellent.
Klaw, is Rendon a lock to go #1 in 2011? I don't see Cole or Purke taking that spot.
Not a lock, but most likely. Springer might be the best bet from the (non-Rendon) field.
Nelson Cruz was a AAA washout and now he is one of the better outfielders in baseball...that said, is Brandon Wood not a candidate to do the same?
Not based on what I've seen here.
I need a 2 player game recommendation that is fun but not too difficult.
Lost Cities. I wrote it up here: http://meadowparty.com/blog/?p=1386
Keith, you have to go to Joe's Farm Grill if you are living in AZ now. One of the best meals I've ever had. Cheesecake was awesome too.
Yep, that's one of the DD&D places. Very good.
You making a trip up to UCONN this spring?? I can give ya a few burger rec's
They come out west so I can keep those sweaters in storage.
Would you change your mind on Matt Rizzoti if he had a great year in Lehigh Valley this year or is he one of those guys that might be able to do really well in the minors, but who doesn't translate to MLB because he's too limited physically? THanks
It would take a lot to get me to come around on him. Unathletic minor league slugger who looks like he beats up on bad pitching. I like that Phillies system a lot, but it's because they have guys on the opposite end of the spectrum from him.
How does Solis project in the majors? Possible quick call up?
Quick callup 4th or 5th starter type.
For the Jays to become a championship team where would they most likely have to slot their young arms (romero, cecil, morrow, drabek, jenkins, stewart, last years first rounder)?
If you're an optimist, and they stay healthy, Drabek-Morrow-Romero-Stewart-Cecil would be fairly insane.
Keith, any opinion on Dan Davis's recent ESPN radio hit about the "clowns" who want to give King Felix the Cy Young?
Which minor leaguer are you sick of being asked about?
Hm. Eduardo Nunez has to be in that discussion.
I read Bel Canto by Ann Patchett on your The Dish rec and loved it until the last two pages, which knocked it down from "great" to "good" for me. I understand you can rationalize how and why two real-life individuals in their situation might end up that way, but given that NOTHING else in the book pointed to, explained or justified it, the development felt underdeveloped and tacked-on. Disagree?
Disagree. I think it's quite realistic based on their shared experience. I know of one real-life example (with worse circumstances) that it matched quite well.
Bumgarner played most of this year as a 20 year old. What do you see in him that limits his chance of improving, say his offspeed/breaking stuff?
Age is a big factor for hitters, far more so for pitchers. I don't see how or why you'd expect his curveball to improve.
Which catch phrase are you most sick of? Is "in the discussion" in the discussion?
At the end of the day, you can either think out of the box, or just punt.
My God, I don't miss being a consultant.
How has Eduardo Escobar looked? I know the stats are meaningless, but he's hitting...could he have enough bat to make it as an everyday SS?
Utility guy more likely.
Does MLB drug test for weed?
Only if there's probable cause, I believe.
With news of the sad passing of Sparky Anderson, where do you rank him among managers all-time? Top 5-10?
Better question for Neyer or Chris Jaffe.
I've seen you mention the game, Dominion. I think I recall that you like it. I've only seen it in a store once and was wondering if you could describe it. What kind of game is it? Generally, how is it played? It was on the shelf next to Risk. Is it anything like Risk? I enjoy Risk. Do you think that means I'd like Dominion? I'm looking to find some new games to play.
Nothing like Risk. Dominion is a card game where you try to build a deck of cards that let you take certain actions or buy better cards. Very easy to get into, so I often recommend it to people just trying to get into better board games.
What's your favorite way to prepare pork chops?
Leave them at the store and buy tenderloin or shoulder instead.
Can you please rank the following Cormac McCarthy novels: The Road, No Country, Blood Meridian?
The Road, Blood Meridian, No Country.
Where can I find AFL stats......for Harper.
So what is your assessment of Sabean? Did he just get lucky with this Giants team? I think most people in SF are surprised he has been the GM this long.
He made some good moves, hired the right people, and got really freaking lucky. It doesn't always have to be "he's great!" or "he sucks!"
Am I probable cause?
For what it's worth, as long as the pot usage isn't affecting the player's work ethic or play on the field, I don't care about it at all. What you do to yourself on your own time is none of my business. If you want to choke on some bubonic chronic, it's not really my business ... until you start showing up late for practice, or aren't prepared for games, or get arrested. Then I care.
Where do you stand on Prop 19, or rather, on state/federal drug policy in general?
I support decriminalization - but, again, if I was a GM, I'd want to know whether the player's habit was affecting his output. Two different perspectives.
Who is Eduardo Nunez?
You seem to like Zach Lee. Similar development time to Kershaw, or longer?
Similar. Stuff isn't quite as electric as Kershaw's.
There was an article on CNBC that said Lincecum's going to lose out on endorsement chances because of his misdemeanor arrest. Uh, the guy pitches in San Francisco. If anything, I'd think he'd do even better than before.
He should be in Cypress Hill's next video.
Curious on your thoughts on Ichiro piling up so many hit numbers in his over the course of his career? Impressive? Do you put it closer to the worthless/counting stat pile with RBI and Wins?
Impressive, since that's his game. Hall of Famer for me, no doubt.
Now that you're gone, any good breweries around Boston you'd recommend?
I was a big Harpoon fan.
Hey Keith; Love the chats. I like the diversity of your interests that get mixed in. I am planning on attending some Northwoods league games next summer. Is it okay for me to approach a scout before or during a game to visit, learn and socialize? Is there a bad time that I should avoid?
I'm inclined to say no. Most scouts I know would prefer not to be bothered while they're working, even though they'd probably be very polite if you did. If you insist, I'd say do it well before the game, before BP, or during the dead time between infield and first pitch.
Did you deactivate your facebook?
Fan page is still up: http://www.facebook.com/KeithLawWriter
Wife is headed home for a nooner with me, but I am stalling at work reading your chat... how does that make you feel?
Hi Keith, could you rank these college SPs and give an idea on each of their ceilings: Matt Barnes, Danny Hultzen, Trevor Bauer, Jack Armstrong, Taylor Jungmann.
Barnes is the top guy, #1 starter potential, big gap between him and the other four.
Keith, at what point in your life did you say to yourself, "I'm sick of the seasons, and I'm sick of 20 degree weather." Never-ending summers here I come! I'm almost there...
About five or six years ago. Then I changed jobs, had a kid, and put it aside until spring of 2009.
Any recommendations that need to be on a wedding registry for the kitchen?
Food processor. Stand mixer (5 qt, not 4.5 qt, trust me). Either a good quality set of knives or just a good chef's knife. And although they're cheap I love having a good toaster oven with a proper broiler setting.
Zadie Smith's White Teeth - any comment? I have read the first 80 pages and am considering dumping it.
Read it, mixed feelings, undoubtedly brilliant but it was kind of all over the place.
Klaw, I know you're about to flame me but I have to ask anyway - your opinion of the Keurig coffee machines? I love 'em, no matter what you say!
HATE. That coffee was roasted and ground in the late '90s.
for Dave in LA: Alesmith, Stone, Ballast Point, Port Brewing / Lost Abbey (same brewery, different brands)--all from San Diego County, The Bruery--Orange County, Russian River (when available)--Northern California, and Eagle Rock--Los Angelesfor you in AZ: Four Peaks, Lumberyard Brewing (out of Flagstaff). Many of the aforementioned distribute in AZ, but I'd also look out for Bells (from Michigan), in particular their Two Hearted Ale if you liked Harpoon IPACheers
Fine, best way to cook pork shoulder?
Pressure cooker for about 45 minutes. Or slow roast in the oven for about 5-6 hours.
What are some of your favorite children's books? As in, books you actually read to you child (children?) right now. I'm a primary teacher and I have a 5- and 1-year old and I'm a big fan of Mo Willems's work. What do you enjoy for reasons beyond, "my kid likes them" ?
We love the Eric Carle books - my daughter keeps coming back to them, and she's just about memorized The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The first two books of Pooh stories are excellent, although the new one was a disappointment. Also: Madeline; Dear Zoo; Guess How Much I Love You?; and the always fun Huevos Verdes con Jamon. (Sam-I-Am becomes Juan Ramon, so that the rhyme is intact.)
Best Kids book (for the 1-5 age group) is Sleepy Time Olie. Lyrical, fun and wonderful art.
Don't know that one - thanks.
What is the best way to cook flank steak and what should I serve it with?
Quickly over direct, high heat (grill is best) and slice thinly against the grain. Flank and skirt are the best meats for fajitas.
Drabek + Thames for Rasmus, who says no?
Cardinals. Thames is a fringe guy at best.
I saw above where you wrote that you believe Vazquez is hurt...yes, he has a severe case of "can't pitch in the american league-itis"
That wouldn't explain the velo drop, though.
Have you given up slow cooking a pork shoulder on the charcoal?
We left the charcoal grill in Massachusetts, with the house. Not sure what I'll buy when our house here is built.
You said you went to Italy with your wife, are there any other countries/places you'd like to visit but haven't gotten around to yet?
Netherlands. Argentina. Chile. Costa Rica. Morocco. Slovenia. Czech Republic. Greece. Might be a while before we get to take another trip like that.
Wanted to thank you for constantly talking up Jasper Fforde. Picked up The Big Over Easy and tore through it. On the topic of books, what are the 5 books you feel every college student should read before they graduate?
For an American student? I'd say Huck Finn, Beloved, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, and The Grapes of Wrath.
thanks for the recommendation of The Magicians. Did you see that Grossman plans to release the sequel next year?
I did not but that's great news. He did say last year that he "wasn't done with Fillory."
Kemp for Rasmus?
I read that as "Hemp for Rasmus" and thought we were still talking about marijuana.
Broke college student who can only afford 1 trip nest year: Spring Training or the AFL?
after the arizona fall league should I have any hope for lambo ever being a quality asset to the pirates.
He can hit. And immature doesn't have to be forever.
If you got to pick the top end of a rotation to build a team around next season, do you take Halladay, Oswalt, and Hamels or Lincecum, Cain, Bumgarner?
I'd take Doc first of all of them. Leaning slightly Phillies but it's pretty close. I wouldn't argue if you said SF.
Are you watching Boardwalk Empire? What are your thoughts.
I'm a month behind. But I am still watching it.
Michael Pineda or Martin Perez?
If these reports of Perez' velo being down or highly variable are true - and I have heard them directly - I'm concerned enough to think Pineda.
have you seen mcdade in the afl? what about loewen? could you give us your assessment if you have
What's your opinion of Dee Gordon's potential?
Has gone from overrated to underrated. He's still physically immature and he was rushed to AA this year. If they slow it down, and let his body catch up, he'll be fine.
I know you've recommended it before, but as someone who is looking to get into cooking, what books would you recommend? I know you said Alton Brown had a great book to read on this very topic.
I'm Just Here for the Food was his first. Also Joy of Cooking.
I'm pleasantly surprised by the new "Cat in the Hat" show. More educational than I would have thought. Your thoughts?
My daughter loves it.
When will Tony Sanchez make it up to Pittsburgh? Future ceiling?
Solid average everyday catcher.
Should Ron Washington be fired after mismanging numerous games?
Too strong. But he needs some help, somewhere. A better bench coach. A basic math class. I have no idea, but you can't let him put Neftali Feliz under glass and refuse to break it unless Zombie Jerome Holtzman says it's OK.
I wish I could have been Jack Zdurenciek yesteday. That would have been so fun to decline the Bedard and Lopez options.
Picture him doing it in a Heidi Klum voice. "I'm sorry Jose but you are AUF'D!"
That's it for this week. Thanks for all the questions. Again, the free agent rankings and writeups go live Saturday night at midnight Eastern (when the free agents get free), and I'll follow up with a series of articles on each position over the course of the week.
