Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Hello folks, thanks for the flexibility. Let's hit it.

casey (oxford)

how often do you think DE hughes will be used for the remainder of the season for the colts? he seemed to produce quite well on MNF, should there be more to expect just like Freeney's rookie season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:34 PM)

Well, are you dying to have Freeney or Mathis out of there a lot? I'm not. So I'd say as much as they need to stay fresh.

Stephen (Dayton, OH)

Hey Paul, I'll ask a quick non-Moss question. Despite a tight division race, it doesn't seem like the AFC south has gotten a lot of attention. Do you think this may be because everyone thought the Colts were falling rather than everyone else rising? People seem to just be coming around to the fact that the division is competitive.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

It's small markets and/or expansion teams, so not the most fans in the world. But I disagree with the premise it doesn't get attention.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

Is it possible to already be Mossed-out in less than a 24 hour period?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:35 PM)

You tell me.

Randy Moss (Nashville)

PK know of any good places to eat round here?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

Start with a burger and shake at Rotiers.

Mark (Nashville)

Is it personnel or philosophy that doesnt allow the Titans secondary to play more man coverage?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:36 PM)

Both. Less and less straight up man all the time by anyone anymore.

Peyton Manning (Watching Game Film)

I saw your article asking for captions when I threw that wicked block for Garcon....how bout they just give that me that 5th MVP trophy right now?? what more do I have to do...throw a td in a game to you?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

I'd like that. Then we could split the ball in half.

Chuck (Nashville)

When Gage and Britt are back, who do the Titans start in 3 WR sets? I'd love to see Moss, Britt and Williams, but something tells me they will be looking to get Gage and/or Washington on the field.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:37 PM)

Depends on how it's going. But sounds like they could have six weeks to sort it out.

Titans Fan (Nashville)

Do you think Moss will work out well for the Titans and do you think there are any plans beyond this season for him in Nashville?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:39 PM)

Anything's possible, but I'd expect he will be looking for more than they will pay next year. I think it's a bold, relatively low-risk move. But I fear it a little.

Chris (Ann Arbor, MI)

john Clayton said he is worried that Gonzo from the Colts is going to miss a significant amount of time....what gives???? I didn't even see where he got hurt vs the Texans..can you give an update?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:40 PM)

Didn't practice yesterday with a knee injury. He did get shaken up on that sideline tackle.

Cameron (San Antonio)

Should the Texans be looking, once agin, at a high DT draft pick for the 2011 draft. Okoye has had plenty of time and it's frustrating watching this would be dominant pass rush come up short hitting the QB.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:41 PM)

Needs start with DT, FS to me.

Fred (Johnson City, TN)

I hear that Austin Collie practiced yesterday and Anthony Gonzalez did not. Do you know anything about this?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

Collie, hand, limited Wednesday. Gonzalez, knee, out.

Finley (via mobile)

Dude, I was a far better candidate than Haslam. Why did you stop campaigning for me? We haven't been communicating well and I feel left in the dark.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:42 PM)

You sure are taking this hard. But I don't know that the governor elect would be napping right now as you are.

Cory (New York)

Once Britt comes back in a month or so, do you think teams will run more man or zone defense? It's gonna be tough to defend the Titans with Britt and Moss on the outside and CJ in the backfield.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:43 PM)

Moss is no guarantee and Britt is no guarantee and the two of them together are certainly no guarantee. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Shaun (TN)

I know you would tell if you hear anything on Britt. But last night on Sportscenter someone eluded to the fact that Britt should miss one game. Is there anything to this? I haven't heard the Titans give any type of time frame. It would be great to have Britt, Moss, and Washington (all deep threats) playing at the same time. If anything it will keep the safeties out of the box for CJ to run wild.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:44 PM)

They declared him out for this week. So he missed at least one game. I've heard reports that say anywhere from four to eight weeks.

Rob (Kentucky)

do you think that CJ's lack of production is a result of the change in the Titans offensive line or is it the defense putting more focus on him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:45 PM)

Both and more.

Dude (Nashville)

Will teams try to frustrate Randy Moss knowing he might give up on plays, and ultimately, the Titans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

How? Don't teams try to frustrate any good offensive player?

Adam (Bronx, NY)

How do you like ATV's (Verner) chances for rookie of the year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

Have you seen Suh? I like Suh's chances for defensive rookie of the year.

Matt (NY)

Seems like the word "parity" has often been tossed around with the word "mediocrity". AFC South this year sure seems to be an exception, though. What do you think?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:46 PM)

I certainly don't think it's mediocre.

Joe Biddle (Nashville)

Did you hear my interview on the Dan Patrick show...I knocked it out of the park with the road kill joke!!! Why is DP interviewing a columnist and not the beat writer?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Please head for DP's chat for an answer there.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

How do the Titans turn rejects in Ball and Babin, into fierce pass rushers?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:47 PM)

Coach their technique and tell them to stop the run on the way to the quarterback. I don't know why everyone doesn't do it that way.

Nick (Seattle)

Are the Titans doing anything to account for missing Algae Crumpler's blocks for Chris Johnson?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

They haven't left his spot vacant. They are playing 11 on offense. Craig Stevens is the blocking tight end, and they like him a lot.

John (Cinci)

Is it bad for the Jags that Garrard played well last week? Don't they just need to cut ties with him and move on? If he keeps having decent games, he might stick around, but they won't go anywhere.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:49 PM)

He can make it more complicated than it was going to be, yes.

macdaddyx4 (Greeley)

What do you make of the Texans dominant first meeting against the Colts and Colts dominant in the second outing? Home field advantage or are Colts improving while Texans are on decline?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

Division series go like that a lot of times.

Mike (Houston)

Your guess on who wins the division as of now? What are the chances that 2 teams out of the South make the playoffs? Looks like Pats, Jets, Steelers, Ravens are all virtual locks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:50 PM)

I still think it will be hard to get in as a wild card from the AFC South.

John Rich (Love Circle)

PK, I hear you have moved away from the neighborhood!!! I wondered why you didn't make it to my election party!

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:51 PM)

We are not friends, and you know it. Have fun with all your powerful friends.

Randy Moss (En Route to Nashville)

Do you have any tricks up your sleeve for dealing with me in interviews? Or will you be content to let me ask myself my own questions?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

I'm not signing off on you asking your own questions, but I would watch it for a while in order to critique your technique.

Zac (Franklin)

Best D-lineman in the division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

Dwight Freeney.

Arnold Schwarzenegger (Sacrament, CA)

Paul, I have a bit more free time these days. What can I do to help with the AFC South? Maybe you need a fitness coach?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:52 PM)

I do need one. Head on over.

VY (Nashville)

Think I would have made a good soccer player with my dramatic injuries?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

I don't know about the soccer part, but the diving part you'd be great.

Jim (Nashville)

Did the Texans forget they had Foster on their team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:53 PM)

I don't know what was worse, the play-calling or the explanations

marinejld (dusty place)

Texans - one game stumble with the Defense or something to really worry about?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:54 PM)

The defense is not good. It's been stumbling regularly. The offense has to pull more than its weight. And failed miserably at that.

Tiffany (Aurora, CO)

Do you remember who the football player's name who knitted/crocheted his team mates hats or scarfs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Not only don't I, but I am not sure I ever knew such a person existed.

Objective Colts Fan (Evansville, IN)

Why do so many Colts opponents let them off the hook by not running the football at least two thirds of the time regardless of the opinion they have of their passing game? Not that I'm complaining , mind you.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

They fall behind.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

How did Foster go undrafted?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:55 PM)

Fumbles and bad rep his final season.

Michael (Nashville)

With the addition of Randy Moss to the Titans and the problems the Texans, Colts, and Jaguars have had in pass defense so far this season, it seems that the Titans have a good chance of winning the division, especially since they still have 5 division games left. Do you think the other AFC South teams can stop both Johnson and the deep pass?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:56 PM)

They won't be able to just roll Moss out there and complete bombs. Acquiring him is not a guarantee of that. It didn't work that way in Minnesota, did it? His last 16 games he's averaged like three catches and 45 yards.

Chris (Indy)

PK, Am I dreaming or did the Colts just find their kick returners in White & Tryon?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:57 PM)

One game. Here at the AFC South blog we emphasize not putting too much into one game. Of course Titans fans are now putting a ton into no games. A new record!

Chris (Nashville)

Your thoughts on the Colts, Texans and Jags playing 3 division games in 1st half of season, but the Titans having 5 out of the last 8 game against division opponents...

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:58 PM)

I am on the record as hating it. Divisional rematches should, by rule, have to be at least six weeks apart.

Mike Shanahan (DC)

PK, I believe you do need Arnold in for some conditioning. You're lacking in cardiovascular endurance...so much so that I was considering replacing you with Tim Graham for the last 2 minutes of the chat.

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Graham can't last two minutes.

macdaddyx4 (Greeley)

If the pass rush kept getting to the Texans (Or any team for this matter), why did they not just start calling quick hooks, slants, or start running screens? Or is it easier said then done?

Paul Kuharsky
  (3:59 PM)

Didn't they call quick passes on the third-and-2 and the fourth-and-2?

Dude (Nashville)

PK, after covering the Oilers/Titans so long, surely you have more than a "broad" opinion of their season. Tell us what you really think!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:00 PM)

I don't think they are a playoff team. I've said that consistently.

marinejld (dusty place)

Moss is all about PERCEPTION - teams will double cover him and open up possible lanes for CJ or at least allow some of the other WR better chances to get open.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

When he jogs off the line, it's not as if that safety is stuck in a game of freeze tag. He's allowed to go chase the ball-carrier. Will there be more space? Yes. Will there be fields of green with pretty flowers growing on them? No.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Before the season started the Jaguars FO laid the foundation of success as being a playoff contender. At the mid-way point the reality is that this team still has too many holes that need to be filled. The most critical piece, as you noted, is the lack of consistency; specifically in losing well. Even if Jacksonville manages to go 7-9 or 8-8, if JDR continues to lose games by large numbers, doesn't that still force Weaver's hand regarding a coaching change?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:02 PM)

I think it does so long as public sentiment is strong for a change.

Jimbo (Evansville)

I think the first 3 and last 3 games of the year ought to be intra-division. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:03 PM)

Overly structured. Also, then all the big rivalries would be the big TV games and all of us would see Packers-Bears and Giants-Cowboys and never Colts-Titans, for example.

Rob (Kentucky)

Who in the locker room can keep Moss in check if need be and prevent the negative influence if it should happen?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:05 PM)

I've asked the same question. Collins is the only guy with the resume that would give him the voice, but a backup QB doesn't have the status.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Interesting reply, Paul. "I think it does so long as public sentiment is strong for a change." Is public sentiment usually a component for an owner making a coaching change or is Jacksonville, in your opinion, a different beast? I ask because the Dallas situation warrants a similar move.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:06 PM)

Jerry doesn't need the public to stick with him. Wayne does. Different beast absolutely.

Michael (Murfreesboro)

Are you going to pitch a tent at the Titans facility this week when Moss shows up?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:07 PM)

Nope. I will just write about the guys who do. I know one who might wear camouflage. I'll be in Philly.

Charles (Goodlettsville)

What winning team do you think has a chance to cool off in the second half of the season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:08 PM)

Like it. I think Oakland could overtake KC, starting this weekend. I think the Jets could cool their jets.

Anthony (NJ)

Paul, Tell us why Tennessee isn't a playoff team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:09 PM)

Because I think Pittsburgh, New England, the Jets and Baltimore are all getting playoff spots. Because playoff teams don't lose to Denver at home. Because playoff teams have a plan for Antonio Gates.

J. (Jacksonville, FL)

Listen, I know the draft is forever and a day away, and I am one of the fans really enjoying the Jaguars this season, but I love the NFL Draft. If the Jags have a middle to late 1st Rd. pick, do you think they would look at a CB or take a QB the fans seem to screaming for? Did I end that last sentence with a preposition? Oh, well...

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:10 PM)

They have to take a quarterback. Have to.

tim howard (us keeperville)

pk, do you think that you could convert a pk on me if given the chance?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:10 PM)

Nerves would probably ruin me. But I should be able to hit one of two for sure.

macdaddyx4 (Greeley)

Should we start questioning how a team does against the 3-4? It could be said the Saints lost to the Browns, who use a 3-4, because they were not prepared to the extent they are against the 4-3? Is this fair to ask since whoever wins the AFC South will probably have to play one of these teams: Steelers, Ravens, Patriots, and Jets, all of whom utilize the 3-4

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:11 PM)

There are more and more of them, which should make playing against one less and less of a big deal. Unless that one happens to be Pittsburgh's.

Hair Club for Men (Nashville)

Still waiting......

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:11 PM)

I'm not coming, Chief. It's not like I'm ill and you offer treatment.

Anthony (NJ)

Play offteams dont get shut out at home, go to overtime with the worst team in the nfl and gates is an all pro RIGHT ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:12 PM)

Who cares if they go to overtime if they win?

Bill Polian (Indianapolis)

Pete Kuharsky, good thing you'll be in Philly. With this injury to Session we're going to need you in at LB. Don't forget your shoes.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:12 PM)

Have you spoken with my agent? My price has changed.

Ryan (Saint Johns, FL)

I know both of Derek Cox's were basically handed to him, but do you think his "confidence" issues are behind him now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:12 PM)

If they aren't, they should be.

Michael (Nashville)

I'm not saying they throw deep to Moss on every play but defenses will have to adjust which should open things up for Johnson, Washington, and even Bo Scaife. Am I being too optimistic?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:12 PM)

Too early to say. Can we see it. Are we allowed?

Taylor (CA)

The last 3 Superbowl Champions have lost to the Browns. I understand the idea that playoff teams don't drop games to lesser teams. But it's the NFL where every game can hinge on one play and anything can happen.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:14 PM)

Of course it can. I was asked why I don't like the Titans for the playoffs. I gave a three-part answer.

Brian (Indianapolis)

Most surprising division so far this year Paul? The AFCW with Oakland and KC looking good, or the shocking performance of the entire NFCW?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:14 PM)

Tie? KC and Oakland up and SF and Arizona so far down are equally surprising. Though I actually though Oakland could challenge for a wild card.

Anthony (NJ)

when your giving up 30+ points to a 0-6 team someone should care otherwise YOU MISS THE PLAYOFFS.....right

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:16 PM)

Did they win that game or did they lose it? How does it show in the standings? Did you want me to give you my answer. Or did you want me to give you your answer?

Chuck (Nashville)

From a media coverage point of view, you have to be at least a little excited that the PR spectacle that is Randy Moss is coming to the AFC South. What player would you most want to join the AFC South, based on pure entertainment value?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:17 PM)

Top of my head answer is Philip Rivers.

Dave (Canada)

How would the people of Nashville react to Moss being rude to one of their caterers?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:17 PM)

The overreaction would be unreal.

Zeke (Jax, Fl)

Why couldn't the Jags take a CB first round if BAP. Than come back in second round a grab a QB? They sure didn't succumb to the fans wanting Tebow.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:17 PM)

I said a quarterback. I never said Tebow and I never said anything about the fans. It's a good quarterback draft and they'll go get one.

Chadillac (Nashvegas)

Who are the best QBs on the bench in the NFL that have some playing time ahead of them? I fear VY is not the answer. Great Moss coverage by the way!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:19 PM)

There are few. I mean, Seattle thought Charlie Whitehurst fit that. Kolb is going to be the trade prize.

Mike (Nashville)

I think your overly critical of the Titans because you do not want people to think you have a bias from following then before joining ESPN?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:20 PM)

Loved them the 13-3 year. Why can I not like them for the playoffs? I don't like the Texans for the playoffs either.

JB (TX)

You're right on one thing, that Denver loss will probably haunt the Titans down the stretch, BUT the good news is 4 the 4 games loaded up at the end of the sched vs. HOU and IND they control their own destiny basically. I think they'll be 8-3 coming to Houston on 11/28...

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:21 PM)

That would be very difficult, as they are currently 5-3 and have only two games before the Houston trip.

Average Blog Reader (AFC South)

Hey Paul,I enjoy reading your blog, but why do you always slight the Texans? For that matter, you don't write enough about the Colts, Titans, or Jags either. And why do you always hate on VY?Also, could you give us your predictions on the rest of the divisional games throughout the season? And, could you please comment on who AFC South teams will be looking to draft this offseason. Thanks PK...Truly enjoy the blog!!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:22 PM)

I get a steady stream of all of these, daily.

Patrick (Nashville)

Can anything be done to stop opposing QB's from throwing 300+ everytime on the titans

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:23 PM)

I know! Scapegoat Fuller.

Randy Moss (Somewhere )

What did you have for lunch today?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:23 PM)

I was part of a panel on social media at Maggianos. Thanks for asking. We're off to a great start!

Anthony (NJ)

I wanted an unbias opinion from someone who sees the team closer than most. just spurting out crapy games which ALL TEAMS HAVE is not EXPERT at all. tell me they arent running the ball as well or injuries. i mean you are the EXPERT right ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:24 PM)

Injuries, that's a far better answer than the one I gave you. Which had three pieces, two of which you've chose to ignore for some reason.

Michael (Nashville)

Of course, but it really won't matter if the defense keeps giving up 300 yards a game. Do you think the Titans pass defense's troubles are caused by personnel or Chuck Cecil's lack of call playing experience? It didn't seem as though any adjustments were made for Gates in the second half.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:25 PM)

They don't care about yards if they do OK with points.

Kevin Dyson (Nashville)

Look, I know I was no Randy Moss but everybody seems to have forgotten about the Music City Miracle within the last 24-hours. What gives? Can't I at least get a little love for that?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:25 PM)

You did. You have. You will. Great play by Mike Jones, but you could have really helped yourself by breaking that tackle.

Gene (Indiana)

Does Peyton Manning have a legit chance to earn a 5th MVP or is it improbable due to him winning two straight already?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:26 PM)

Absolutely he had a legit chance. But let's let both PM and the competition play up until voting.

Kelvin Hayden (Indiana)

Am I getting better with age or am i the result of a single games great pass rush?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:29 PM)

I don't think you've been very good up until Sunday, and you agreed with me when we spoke after the game, remember?

Mike Hart (Indiana)

I know i only started one game but am I squeezing into that #2 spot on the depth chart?

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:30 PM)

You're hurt.

Paul Kuharsky
  (4:31 PM)

Well kids, it was fun. Time to work on some entries for the blog. Enjoy the games or your bye week.
