Hi folks. Welcome to our weekly Blackhawks chat. Devils are on the ice..Hawks just got off. I like how the hawks have played last 2 games even in losing on Monday...MAYBE, things bottomed out against Edmonton...Fire away with questions

Taylor (Naperville)

With Soupy back, should we expect to see a defensemen sent to Rockford soon enough? Or will we continue to carry 8 and occasionally have Scott or Hendry spend some time at forward?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:05 PM)

You're going to see that tonight. Both Scott and Hendry are going to play forward. Q didnt give a real good reason for it except to intimate they may not play much so more time for other forwards, bascially. I think they are unsure what to do back there so for now it will be 8 but I dont see that being a long term thing. Someone, really likes Cullimore I think and Hendry not so much...

Jeff (Mokena)

Why has Coach Q used some defenseman as forwards when there are good options in Rockford? Or was this more of a geographic thing with where Rockford was and the timing of it all? Just doesnt make sense to use d-men at forward if you have good options there.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:07 PM)

AS I just posted I think they are unsure but whats the difference if the fourth line is only going to play 5-6 minutes...I kind of like the idea of more ice time for Kane, Toews, etc. They can handle...But again, dont think this will be a long term thing plus you save some money rather than playing a guy like 2-3 shifts..Having said that I would like to see Morin..This looks to be an experiment

Jon (Chicago)

Jesse, NBA teams (Boston, etc.) have deemphasized the daily regular season grind in favor of building momentum for a deep playoff run. Should this be the mindset for the Hawks? Focus on building chemistry and being content with a 3-6 seed knowing that they can skate with anyone come playoff time?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:09 PM)

Im not sure you take that mindset this early. You do that and all of a sudden you're fighting for a playoff spot BUT as we get deep into the season and they are mid-pack you might take that thinking..I do believe any championship team, unless they are just a dyansty, will go through some pains the next yr...you are right, this is about spring, not winter..

daniel Sherer (rogers park)

How concerned should we be that the hawks have only managed 15 points in their first 14 games, when teams like St. Louis already have 14 points in just 9 games?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:11 PM)

Not overly...new roster+goofy schedule=.500 team. Thats how I look at it. Those other teams are building to something the hawks have already achieved..not saying the hawks are taking it easy but unless things broke for them perfect, this was the start I expected. the schedule is brutal. 5 more games than the blues and wings just a month in? that's a lot. They will have to catch up and hopefully the hawks take advantage of some rest at that point in the schedule..so, no, not overly concerned

Ryan (Iowa)

What's your guess on when we will see Morin with the Hawks?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:12 PM)

Unless money hinders it, I think soon enough...next injury or what not.

Chris (Lockport)

Any specific game that Hossa is shooting for to return? Any timetable or information on Bolland's injury?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:12 PM)

One more week or less for hossa...bolland prob not saturday...early next week..

Ali (Chicago) [via mobile]

Obviously there are still some questions the Hawks need to sort out between now and April, but it seems pretty safe to say they'll be back in the final 16. With that in mind, would you agree that anything less than a trip to the conference finals would be a disappointment? Winning back to back titles is really hard, so we need to be realistic.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:13 PM)

conference finals sounds good. thats realistic. hopefully more!

Tim (Crystal Lake)

Gazing into your crystal ball, do you foresee the Hawks making nay trades, particularly any to make up for our apparent lack of depth at centre?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:14 PM)

Yes, but not for a while...center and even defense..but neither grow on trees

Taylor (Naperville)

How sick are you guys of airports by now?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:14 PM)

Im sick from the asbestos at MSG..Can i sue them? Very DEEP pockets!

Tim (Chicago)

With all these close games, I keep hearing people say "the hawks just haven't geled as a team". I think that's a cop out answer. Is it really that simple or are we nowhere as deep or talented as we were last year?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:15 PM)

Its both..because they arent as deep and talented and have newcomers, they havent gelled as a team..It will come in my opinion. Leadership too good and I dont see the newcomers being overwhelmed..just cant have top 4 d hurt .that is key

Kevin (Minneapolis)

Is the Hendry, Pisani, Scott line a joke? It is...right?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:16 PM)

Not a joke..I dont expect more than a handful of shifts..again, an experiment

Matt (DeKalb)

How do you feel about Jack Skille? I think he is going to start putting points on the stat sheet?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:17 PM)

I like him..think he's done a decent job but he's kind of an up and down player..Not a lot of moves to his game..maybe he is turning into the perfect fourth liner..

Anthony (Chicago)

Why not call up Makarov when Hossa went down? He seems to play a very Hossa-like game.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:18 PM)

I cant answer that excpet to say they say they call up who is deserving and who the right "fit" is at the time...I cant watch the rockford games and unless you watch them AND the Hawks very hard to make that call. I do find it ironic all we talked about in camp was makarov, beach, morin and none have been up here yet...I do understand, even if they are a lesser prospect, if they are giving more than the bigger name they deserve to come up. Sends the right message

Mike Kamrad (Mesa, AZ)

Why are we not hitting more ??? Sometimes this season I feel they were scared to check.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:20 PM)

Could have used it more against the Rangers. I REALLY liked how the Rangers played and so did Q. 35 hits and 33 blocked shots. Great "hustle" type of stats..brower, bickell, dowell need to piuck it up in that dept.

Danny (Chicago)

Where do you think the Blackhawks will sit going into the playoffs?Do you think Hossa and Sharp will stay consistent?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:21 PM)

Love sharp..confidence at all-time high..Hossa is always consistent..these nagging type injuries are what gets in his way but tough to criticize..you take the good with those injuries..mid-pack sounds about right..4-7

Sam (Lake Bluff)

Which player have you been the most pleased with this year and who do you think can be doing better.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:23 PM)

Besides the stars, I really like the way Kopecky has played..Hes maximising his talents..he goes to the net and does what he has to. Not his fault he just doesnt always have the hands...Brouwer and yes even Toews need to pick it up... Toews has left some goals on the ice..He needs to finish the way Sharp is..Not everything is judged on goals but when you're JT, you have produce more. He would agree.

bob (schaumburg)

Have you heard any trade rumors for the hawks? The forward I see moving is Troy Brower. Only 1 goal and a restricted free agent next year?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:24 PM)

I could see that happeneing for a d-man but not yet..they want to see this team for a while longer..Trade deadline a ways away..

Mateo (Chicago)

I like what I see so far, a lot of new players feeling each other out and plus a weird schedule, they are in a good shape now as the continue to grow...can Stan get some love? Could you imagine the out cry if they we sub 500?! Also, who has impressed you the most? I am a big fan of Stalberg...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:26 PM)

Of the newcomers, Stalberg has shown the most "spark". He seems to be on the verge..now he has to breakthrough

Jay (Chicago)

Wasn't Scott brought here to keep teams from running over the Hawks like the Rangers just did?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:26 PM)

Yes and No. They were clean checks..Hes there to prevent getting "run" which I think is a little different. Plus, no one wants to fight him. They didnt even dress Boogard

Grant (Glen Ellyn)

Why is Q or the organization changing the lines up every game? It seems like they could use more time to gel with each line-mate. And the Scott, Pisant, and Hendry line is a joke, he can change that line up next game if they'd like, no objections here, just not the first 3 lines every game...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:28 PM)

Injuries have played a part..I mean Hossa goes down, you have to change..Bolland same thing...Kane and Sharp both missed a game os it happens...He's giving Brouwer another chance with the top line..This is the time of year when you can do it. Learn alot about your team for later

Imre (Missoula, MT)

Speaking of hits...are we missing the Burish and Eager types. The "energy" guys?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:28 PM)

A little bit..they have been replaced by more speedy types like Skille but yes, they have been missed..a little

Imre (Missoula, MT)

I don't want to belabor the point, but could the reason for the Hendry, Pisani, Scott line be the cap hit of others at Rockford? I just read your claims about it being an experiment, the low # of shifts, the low ice time, etc, but my gut tells me it?s a salary cap issue. Any truth to that?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:30 PM)

I just dont know because if it is it could be more of a bigger picture thing..the point is we know they can afford potulny and smith but maybe they need to save for later...I think its more about saving a little rather than playing some guys 4-5 minutes...cant tell you what stan is thinking in that regard..Joel did say the call up of smith, for example, was pure hockey and not money

Emily (Chicago)

In your opinion, do you think the Hawks are starting to play as a team and buy into Q's system, or do you think there still are some glaring issues?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:32 PM)

I think they are...I dont see them as glaring..Lets watch with campbell back for a while and see how that team defense peforms and if scoring chances come down..its coming along..Toews is honest, he believes so, since that edm debacle

Jim (Burbank)

can you see this current hawks team being better then Stanley cup team in time or are we just going to be a good team contending but maybe never getting to Cup again?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:33 PM)

I dont see it being better BUT if the new players buy into their roles, espcially come Spring, they can win again...Kopy already is buying it..now need some third liners

Grant (Glen Ellyn)

Why did Q send out a power play unit of Poultny, Pisani, Brower, Hendry and Seabrook vs Minnesota? Was it a reward or punishing others?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:35 PM)

he did that again on Monday..If u think about it, they dont have much after that first unit--which by the way is looking real good--with hossa and bolland down and most other stars on first unit he doesnt have many options

Jim (Burbank)

out of the players we lost from last years team which one would you think hawks like to have right now?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:35 PM)

Everyone asks that. The easy answer is Ladd. Kind of a do-it-all player

Adam (Chicago)

I see Versus added Kustok to their coverage to go along with Olczyk. I guess Chicago is the center of the hockey media universe. So, will we be seeing a Jesse Rogers working with them soon?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:36 PM)

Hairline not right for tv..

Scott (Loop)

This team looks soft. I haven't seen any good hits, other than maybe from Seabs. The enforcer they brought in (Scott) can't skate so he isn't on the ice enough. What can the hawks do to be more physical so teams don't push them around?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:36 PM)

Bickell and Browuer need to step up...stalberg could as well..deccent size...

Charlie (Chicago)

Jesse, with our PP top 5 in the league, Hossa and Sharp on fire, Toews, Kane, Bolland, Brouwer and our PK still have yet to get in a groove, the defense starting to become healthier, the 4th line starting to look stronger, and Turco (in my opinion) beginning to settle in a bit and a much better regular season goalie than Niemi and Huet, I can still see this team winning the division once everything begins to click towards January and we have a full team. What are your thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:38 PM)

Once the scheudle allows for them to go on a run, i think they will..could be happeneing soon..as Q likes to say, they are trending the right way..at least over the least 2 games...but Soup being back allows for it as well

ryan (chicago)

was boyton just a healthy scratch last game... or is he not going to see a lot of ice time now that campbell is back?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:38 PM)

Healthy scratch..Q said he had been a little up and down..he's back in there with cullimore tonight

Bill (Deerfield)

How did Ben Smith look in your opinion?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:39 PM)

He was ok. I would nt have a problem with him being on a 4th line...but they want him to play more Im sure..he didnt embarass

Downer (Elkwood)

Scott is terrible, no one fights, we get outhit, Kane looks like a shell of his old self, Toews is being keyed by every opponent, Skille skates hard only to get put on his back, Stalberg shows brilliance only to disappear for three games and there is NO D in front of Turco. Which of these claims are inaccurate?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:40 PM)

Hmm...Kane is not that far off...Toews as well.. They will get theirs..Skille I agree..even Stal I agree but those are things that could change, but they might not. Now with campbell back D should be better..just hope there isnt another top 4 injury...everything runs through them

Luke (Hamden, CT)

If John Scott, Jake Dowell or Brian Bickell don't fight someone soon I'm going to lose my mind. I don't love the thuggery but we are the weakest, whipiest team in the league.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:41 PM)

I would imagine Bickell will get into something soon, maybe tonight...Just would like to see them play with more of an edge more than an actual fight..

Scott (my cube)

Jesse, Do you think the team has learned enough from the drubbing given to us on Friday night from the oilers? Do you think they would let that happen again?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:42 PM)

I think they have...Cant say if it would happen again but that seemed to be the bottom...I really liked these last two games...

Frank (Naperville)

Why is Kopecky a totally different player when Hossa is not out there with him?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:43 PM)

He was ok last game but friday he was bad...They are tight what can I say...Hossa undestand his game and vice versa..dont know

Dave (Glendale Heights)

Hey Jesse...on Monday I was at the UC watching the Bulls dismantle the Blazers so I didn't catch the Hawks game. How did Brian Campbell look in his first game back?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:44 PM)

very decent and with two more practice under his belt he'll be that much better...he was good, though he made a bad decision on winning goal..took a slide toward spuck handler and he went around him...

The_FFF (Chicago)

Thanks for taking our questions. We've heard Dave Bolland isn't practicing yet. Any update on his injury and when we might expect him back?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:45 PM)

Not practicing yet...very soon. I think he plays early next week

Kevin (California)

Two questions:-Any rhyme or reason to Skille spending so much time on the fourth line? The guy plays his butt off every night and deserves more ice.-Any idea how long til we see Leddy again? I'd much rather see him out there than Scott or Hendry. Is it just an issue of him getting more ice in Rockfor than he would with the big club?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:47 PM)

As I wrote before, Skille seems to be more up and down than shifty, etc. so maybe a bottom 6 guy is best for him .Doesnt meen he cant have success. With Leddy, its simple, if he cant be a top 4 they arent going to play him limited minutes..Im not sure if I agree with it but I do understand the reasoning..Maybe he's back soon but I think they want to see this team as is with Campbell back

Roy (Chicago)

it seems the hawks do have a bit of an inconsistency problem here early, is this something you think that will go away once the teams gels more later in the season?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:47 PM)

Yes, I do...gelling and schedule relief should help

Glen (Wayne, IL)

Jesse, I have been extremely disappointed with Brouwer this year. What is it going to take to get him going? a different line? sitting him? a coach Q rant and rave?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:48 PM)

Not sure..they have tried everything..He showed signs over the weekend..It is a contract yr and hes back with K and T so now is the time for sure

Charlie (Illinois)

John Scott's purpose on this roster is to be an enforcer. Did you see midway through the 2nd period vs the Rangers game when Keith got hit hard in the glass behind Turco? Scott was an arms reach away and skated away! PATHETIC! What was the purpose of the demotions of Ben Smith and Ryan Potulny??

Jesse Rogers
  (1:49 PM)

Those guys are on two contracts...plays a part..I saw the Keith thing..I havent seen much of opponents taking runs so Ill give him a break but just dont expect much from him and you wont be disappointed! he's there to prevent more than anything...

Taylor (Naperville)

Which opposing team's play has surprised you the most so far this season (either in a good or bad way)?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:50 PM)

L.A. without Doughty has been impressive...Nashville as well...I think St. Louis will come down to earth but Im open to being wrong about them..

Brian (Naperville)

With Boynton and Cullermore being ineffective, why don't the hawks bring up Connelly and other Rockford defensemen? When Morin is healthy, will the Hawks bring up Morin? This team lacks playmakers past Hossa, Toews, Kana and Sharp. I would send Bickell down.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:52 PM)

Morin is healthy I believe..give it some more time..again, diff team with their top 4 D-men intact...You might think Culli and Boynton are bad but you dont know that these other guys, maybe besides Leddy, are better...a month isnt long enough...

Rachel (Hattiesburg)

Slow start for Toews. When does he pick up his scoring?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:52 PM)

I think its happeneing any day now. I really do

Jim (Burbank)

Last years team seemed to put pucks to the net far more then this team. I've seen more passing from prime shooting areas then i could believe... Does it seem to you like hawks are playing to pass more then shoot??

Jesse Rogers
  (1:53 PM)

Not really...maybe on the pp some...they had 33 blocked the other night. 33. thats a ton..so they are trying to put it on net..

Joe (Charlottesville, VA)

Kopy and Skille, if they can ever improve their hands, would become top 6 forwards. How many chance have they left on the ice?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:54 PM)

Kopy has been fine for the most part playing his role..I think skille is running out of chances for top 6, yes, but as I wrote before he can still be effective in a bottom 6 role

Paul (Shorewood)

Jesse, I've seen a lot of potential in Troy Brouwer ever since the start of the 2008 season. At a time he had a hot stream of scoring off redirects. You think his game will step up soon? And if he continues to slump throughout the year, you think the Hawks will resign him?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:56 PM)

If the price is right I could see them re-signing. Hes still serviceable..wont get much of a rasie off his 1 mil unless he really goes into overdrive here. I've always liked him too..nice guy off ice as well..needs some edge to his game..can do a lot..needs to start doing it. He has confidence issues so he goes in streaks..

tom (work)

are we evere going to see Kane killing penalties

Jesse Rogers
  (1:56 PM)

Doubtful but I wouldnt say never...

Jim (Burbank)

Whats your take on Bickell? Scored to goals in first 2 games then vanished! Whats hawks plans with him? Also, Do you think hawks are satisfied with Brower and Bollands play so far?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:57 PM)

Simple..kind of like Brouwer, needs to be more physical..Browuer can do more with the puck but Bickell needs that same edge

Adam (Chicago)

Why do the Hawks struggle giving up goals very late / early in periods? They also seem to score and then give it right back a lot. Q talked about the "important shifts" the other day, but this goes back to last year.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:58 PM)

Hard to say...little fluky..I think if Q really wants to play it safe he could put out a defensive unit late..he doesnt always do that but as for the reasons, tough to say...

Steve Rothman (San Diego)

What are your thoughts on goalie performance so far and when do you expect Hossa and Ladd back?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:59 PM)

Ladd? Hossa by next week...Thought Turco gave up some "un-clutch" goals early but has settled in..those two overtime games he won with a combined 15 saves were huge..no major issues with goaltending at this point

Rob (Mesa, AZ)

Jesse, I think our forcheck is a shadow of it's former self, the direct result being that the Hawks are giving up 10 more shots a game. Would you agree?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:00 PM)

Yes, its not a forechicking team like it was last year with Eager, Burish, and Ladd...not the reason they are givin up 10 more a game...(its down to 7 more)..campbell out and new roster was the reason for that...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:02 PM)

That's going to do it for today...Hope I answered some of your questions...Wish I had a better one for why hendry and scott are playing forward tonight but again, think its just to try something...(and maybe its about money. it always is, in some form, right?) anyway, enjoy the game tonight...follow me on twitter @espnchihawks...and check out my blog after the game..chat again next week...you can always email me at jrogers@espnchicago.com
