Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session! It's Wednesday and we're prepping for Week 9 of a season that's got a lot left to go. Thanks for showing up and let's have some fun out there...

scott (charlotte)

whats the deal with the oakland qb's? is campbell still starting or is bruce healthy?

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

I think it's both. Campbell played so well the past fortnight that he'll get to keep playing, but I also think Gradkowski is ready to go. I have more faith in Gradkowski at this point, but I doubt either of these guys is top-15 material at QB.

Birdman (Missouri)

Safer to drop...Collie or Britt?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

I'd say Britt. The Titans don't really know when Britt, who had an awesome 40-point fantasy game just a few weeks back, will return from a hurt hamstring. Some reports say he might not come back this season. I think Collie is closer, and he's in a more dynamic offense to be sure.

rick ma [via mobile]

lookin to add blount would you drop stewart or torain for him

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

I would cut Stewart. I have no faith in the Carolina running game at this point. Torain has done a nice job for the Redskins and should keep the job over Portis, assuming he's healthy. Blount is legit; I ranked him 15th this week.

Bo Jackson (Techmo Bowl)

EK, would you trade Ray Rice and Larry Fitz for either Chris Johnson or Adrien Peterson? What about Mendenhall?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Interesting. I would do it for Peterson. I think he ends up fantasy's top running back. But it's a lot to give up. Even if we assume Rice is not a top-5 RB, but closer to the 10-15 range, and Fitzgerald is as well at WR, that's a lot. For CJ, I don't think I would. And no on Mendenhall. I'll take him over Rice, but not by a lot.

mark (boston)

what 2 of the 3 do you prefer the rest of the year foster, mendnehall, or ray rice?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Foster is a top-5 RB for the season. He's legit. I'd take Mendenhall barely over Rice.

Shane (Montana)

tamme or moeaki for the rest of the season

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

I'd say Moeaki but it's plausible that each fellow is a top-10 TE the rest of the way. Still a bit too early to say that on both, especially on Tamme, but both are ownable in deeper leagues. Soon I might take both over Celek, Winslow, etc.

Dave (TX)

Would you trade Randy Moss for Gennings. I am very thin at WR

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Yes. There's certainly a chance Moss just doesn't play again this season. I'd assume some team claims him ... but what if Moss doesn't want to play there... or he doesn't like the food?

Ken (St. Louis)

Love the advice. Is there any value in DeAngelo Williams at this point for the rest of the year? Hearing that he is still not in practice, glad I took him at near the top of teh 2nd round....

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Yeah, I thought he'd be a lot better than this as well, but I wonder now if he realizes the hopelessness of the situation. I would continue to own DeAngelo, not Stewart, but don't rely on either one.

donald driver owner (SD)

Is driver worth keeping even though he is doubtful this wk and a bye next wk? Can he help me when he returns in week 11 through the end of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

I think this is a top-20 WR starting in Week 11... so yeah, I would keep him around. Just needs to get healthy.

Steve (CA)

Would you trade Best and Gafney for Benson? I am deep at WR and my other RB is Gore. I am afraid Best is on the decline!

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

I'm afraid Benson is on the decline, too! While Best has done little since his 40-point explosion in Week 2, what has Benson done? I'd take Benson over Best, and Gaffney isn't worth much, so yeah, I'd make the deal... but maybe set your sights higher. Best still has significant value.

Elliot (Maine)

BASEBALL KEEPER QUESTION!! E. Andrus or F. Liriano, thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

Wow, baseball! And congrats to the SF Giants, and I do mean that. What an accomplishment. I'd keep Andrus, because I almost always side with the hitter over pitcher, but Andrus did not take steps forward as a hitter in his second year. He runs... no power though.

Rick (Cincinnati)

EK, You are really low on Tolbert compared to the other rankers. Any reason for that since he has been getting some touches and TD's?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

It's still inconsistent. I don't want to be too reactive. He also had a two-week span recently with a total of 5 rushes...

Vic (Denver)

Hey Eric, is now a good time to lift Austin collie of the waivers? He's close to returning right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

I'd say so. Maybe he misses one more game, but I haven't heard he's out for this week. And he could return to big-time numbers this week against a poorous Philly pass D.

Jeff (Neb.)

Is Orton going to decline, in your opinion. I could probably get Vick or Ryan, for a small price, but is it worth it do you think? Im afraid Tebow starts get more touches...

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

I feel like I write/say that exact thing 2 or 3 times per week. The Broncos are losing regularly... why play Orton? Sure, he's productive, but he's not the future. Take Vick and Ryan over him.

Rick (City by the bay)

EK, Owen Daniels or Brent Celek this week and rest of the way

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Yuck. Probably chose the two biggest non-injury busts at TE. I'd say Celek over Daniels.

DL (Chicago)

Do you trust any Dallas skill players? I feel like the pass rush from GB and NYG is going to make the roof cave in

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Sure, I think Kitna is the No. 15 QB, even with the turnovers likely coming. He could get 300 passing yards while his team trails. And I like all 3 of his main WRs and TE Witten. Can't say I'd depend on a Dallas RB at this point. And let's face it, the roof has caved in.

Fred Taylor ((NE))

When will I be a viable fantasy option this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

I'm skeptical it happens at all, because Danny Woodhead is that good. He's awesome.

scott (clt)

no driver in week 9 gives more opportunity and better results for jones or nelson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Absolutely. I ranked Jones just outside my top 20 WRs. Didn't rank Nelson, but he'll probably make the top 100 flex options. WR is just so much deeper than RB.

Randy (TBD)

Should I be dropped?

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Not yet. Have to wait and see if someone picks him up and if Randy will report. That team should hire a caterer.

John (Los Angeles, CA)

RB bargains to be had or buyer beware? Give me your order for Greene, Mathews, Addai, and DeAngelo the rest of the way.

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Interesting... I'd say Mathews, Addai, Greene and then DeAngelo. Mathews is doing OK now.. .Addai did fine when he was active. Greene will have a nice December.

Joel (Michigan )

Is there any hope for Ronnie Brown ? He's clogging up roster space.

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Sure is. But he's a top 50 flex play, so you have to pay attention to him. And he's capable of turning his season around soon.

J.B. (Dunmore, PA)

Brandon Jacobs seems to be working himself back into the Giants offense nicely. Do you see him as a viable flex play on a regular basis or check the match ups first?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

If he continues to score every week, he's a viable RB3 and flex play. Matchups don't matter there. That team runs on all.

Kerry (Seattle)

Is Marian Barber REALLY done at age 27? Better to stash T. Choice with his roster spot at this point?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

I would think Choice gets mentioned by me in the Friday Sneaky adds blog this week. Depends on Felix Jones, but certainly Barber doesn't seem to have much left.

Matt Stafford (Detroit)

Any chance I have a better week 9 than Drew Brees?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

Always a chance, but I'd still stick with the safer veteran option. It's not like Brees is playing poorly.

Texas [via mobile]

Is jorden Shipley worth a roster spot?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Would need to be a deep league; I don't expect Shipley to be more valuable than Ochocinco or Owens. Probably not a top 50 WR at this point, but you know, the Bengals could do what the Broncos might do at some point, and take a look at their future as well.

Danny (Erie, PA)

I can't believe I'm asking this but Woodhead or D. Williams from today forward?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Ha! I will take DeAngelo; I guess he just hasn't been healthy, and that line has been awful, but the talent is still there. I doubt Woodhead will be used enough to be a safe RB2 or WR2. DeAngelo could still get there.

Roger (Chicago)

Blount over Ronnie Brown this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

Yes. There's little reason to have high hopes for Brown at this point, but keep him rostered and as a flex if you must.

Jeff (Oklahoma)

Do you think it is a safer play to start the Law Firm at Cleveland over Jahvid Best vs the Jets this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Green-Ellis, definitely. And not only because of the obvious difference in matchups.

Tim Tebow (Denver)

Will I ever be allowed to throw a pass?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

The way the Broncos are headed, by Thanksgiving. Doesn't mean you'll want him in fantasy though.

K (philly)

If people are going to ask straight up rankings questions, cant they at least ask you to justify your choices. Why do you have Favre ranked so far ahead of Kitna?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Well, Favre plays the awful Cardinals at home. And Favre played just fine, with or without Moss, in Week 8. The interception wasn't his fault. Kitna has a road tilt against a team that just got a road shutout at the Jets. Kitna might have a tough time there.

Wes (Fayetteville, AR)

why is MSW so good on the road, but awful at home?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Opposite of last season, and another hint as to his unreliability...

Josh Freeman (TB)

Am I startable in a 12 team league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Number 8 in ESPN standard QB scoring for the season, and that includes his bye week. So yes, even in a 10-team league he is.

Brian (DC)

Moreno or Best the rest of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Knowshon is on my buy low list. Best isn't.

Jason (New York)

Is DeSean Jackson safe to start this week? I have Hines Ward, Pierre Garcon and Wes Welker as my other options. Need to start 3. Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

If DJax starts, then he's safe. I'm not sure he will be cleared though. I'd play Jackson over Welker, but the other guys are musts.

Dave (Chicago)

Mike Williams TB over Fitzgerald????

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

I probably ranked it that way. Cardinals will get drubbed this week. Williams is a top 20 WR...

T.O. (Cincy)

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated, huh Eric?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

I would agree with that assessment... look, Mr. Moss, if fed properly, is also capable of surprising us.

Dave (MI)

Why isn't Brandon Tate at least ranked? NE will need to take to the air against a Browns team that has given up 1 rushing touchdown, Branch is dinged up, and Brady will have all the time in the world to throw. Doesn't that sound like a good situation?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Tate had one big play last week, a broken play, and rumors of his relevance when Moss was dealt were exaggerated. They should look his way more. Why would we assume they do now? The Pats will try to run this week like they always do.

Tim (Tampa, FL)

Should I stick with Baltimore Defense or drop them for Philadelphia?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

I don't want either defense this week... but I'll go with Philly. Are you aware the Ravens D is ranked 26th for scoring this season among defenses?

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

I don't want either defense this week... but I'll go with Philly. Are you aware the Ravens D is ranked 26th for scoring this season among defenses?

YD (Philly)

Eric, why would the Broncos pull Orton? It seems like he's waaaay down on the Broncos list of issues. The team has given up 70 points in the 4th quarter alone this season. How does pulling a QB who's relatively effective and replacing him with one that they currently trust as a running back address issues like that? The ONLY thing that's working on the Broncos is the passing attack, and by your logic, they should go ahead and break that too. Is there any additional info to back up the "why not replace Orton" mentality? Please explain.

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Absolutely. The reasoning is that this is becoming a lost season. The Broncos have 2 wins. It's slipping away. If the Vikings had a future guy like Tebow, a first-rounder, maybe we'd see it and Favre would retire. Orton is not the future in Denver... he's gone. He can continue to play well and that's just awesome, but if you're gonna go 5-11 anyway, get the future QB in there. The Broncos are thinking about this. I didn't say I would pull Orton... he's doing fine.

Matt Forte (Dumpsville)

Even if I have a half decent outing against Buffalo this weekend, won't I be pretty much worthless after that considering the schedule? No more cupcakes on the slate. Would it be good strategy to drop him and let some other owner go down with the ship?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Excellent point. Forte is my No. 12 RB this week, and after this I doubt I rank him anywhere near that again. But I would enjoy this week first...and then trade him.

Alex (NYC)

Hey EK, I have Roethlisberger, Schaub, and Vick. Who do you like the most for the rest of the year and which would you try and trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

I like Big Ben the most, and would try to move Vick. You can't move Schaub and get proper value. I wonder if Vick can stay healthy.

Nick (CT)

Top fantasy player at the end of the season will be ___________?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Peyton Manning edges out Adrian Peterson and Aaron Rodgers.

Kyle (South Park)

I just traded Orton/PT for Schaub/Mathews...good move?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Yes. I assume that's Pierre Thomas, and kudos to you for convincing someone to take that injury risk on.

Evan (NYC)

Ethics question: my 10 team standard league voted and successfully (through 4 veto votes) vetoed a trade from last week: Welker for Lloyd straight up. No collusion involved. Thoughts on these types of actions?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Well, leave ethics out of it. Why play in a league that allows vetoed trades at all. That trade is fair, or at least the case can be made. Frankly, Lloyd is kicking Welker's statistical butt... but I'm no fan of vetoing anything. Your team, do what you want with it if you're always trying to win.

Philip (San Diego)

How is Peyton going to finish the year ahead of me once I get all my weapons back?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

C'mon...Vincent Jackson is similarly unreliable at this point as Randy Moss...nobody knows if he'll play and when. Chargers don't seem to want him back.

Adam (State College PA)

could I get by for the rest of the year with Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matthew Stafford playing the matchups.

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

It's not recommended, but people have won titles that way. Not everyone needs a Manning or Rivers to win. But it is risky.

Rick (Chicago)

If Keiland Williams gets to start in week 10, what do you think his chances are of keeping the job over Torain and Portis?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

Slim. I think it's Torain's job when healthy. But if Williams goes nuts this week, it could change... I just don't think he will.

Leto (Charlotte)

I have asked a hundred questions and you pick this to anwser?"I just traded Orton/PT for Schaub/Mathews...good move?"Are people idiots? McFadden or Turner this week?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

Um, our rankings are posted... No other comment needed from me.

Mike (DC)

Who to cut between Cutler, McNabb and Fitz?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

It's tough to rely on any of them... I'd cut Fitz first though.

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

I assume he meant Ryan Fitzpatrick there... not Larry Fitzgerald.

Eric (Chicago)

If Keiland Williams goes nuts this week, that must mean the Redskins cut him and he was picked up quickly by another team because at last check, the Redskins are off this week.

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Yes, next week... I've already started my Week 10 prep...

ian (ontario)

thoughts on Marcel Reese?

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Fullback would need two injuries to play a large role...

Evan Houston Texas [via mobile]

If Colt McCoy starts in Cleveland is he worth picking up

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

I ranked him 25th this week, ahead of only Derek Anderson. So he's worth picking up only if your lone QB is ... Anderson or Max Hall.

J Z (Palm Beach)

Why do you even bother answering ranking questions, it just takes up the space of the people who understand the rules of this forum. Please pick one WR for the rest of the season 0.5ppr: S Breaston, S Moss, P Crayton, S Johnson. Thx

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

In a surprise, I'll take Steve Johnson. Then Moss, Breaston and Crayton. And for those who don't get why I would drop Fitz before McNabb, let me remind you, McNabb is the No. 9 in standard scoring. He hasn't been awful. I don

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

I don't really like McNabb moving forward ... but let's not annoint Fitzpatrick as safe either.

neil (imaginationland)

who wins this trade, andre johnson for Lesean Mccoy??

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

I will take the potential best WR over a possible top 10 RB.

Jack (Indianapolis)

Would you drop Crabtree to stash Sidney Rice?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

No, I would not. But I'm guessing a lot of people would!

Joel (Michigan )

Hernandez or Moeki for the rest of the year ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Hernandez. But both could be top 10.

Please.... (PLEASE)

In a PPR league, should I trade L/T, Dustin Keller, and Dwayne Bowe for Chris Johnson and Roddy White?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Oh my... yes, yes and yes.

Depth move at RB only (NYC)

Dropping JStew....Who should I pick up for the rest of the season? Blount or BJGE?

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

I'd go Blount there.

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

OK thanks to all for the thousands of questions and for showing up. More chats coming tomorrow I'm sure. Have a great day and best of luck in Week 9 and beyond.
