Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Welcome to Tuesday chat live from the 3M booth at the SEMA show in Las Vegas. Just watched them body wrap a street car like they wrap NASCAR cars. The wave of the future. Lots of drivers in the house here, but not Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin or Kevin Harvick. They have a Chase to win. Fire away.

Andrew (Kettering Ohio)

Who drives at TUrner next year? They have 6 teams, where does Leffler end up and is Reed full time?

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Know they have Ricky Carmichael under contract. Scott Wimmer debuted for him, but don't know his future. Sure we'll be hearing a lot more about it in the near future.

Andrew (Kettering Ohio)

We look to only have 43 full time cars in Cup next year (losing 1 FRM and at least 2 at RPM). Anyone adding cars? Hopefully not more start and parkers...

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Sure somebody will step up and start a new team, but not sure who yet. There's always a chance if sponsorship comes through that Penske or Waltrip could expand by one, Penske the most likely.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

If Stewart-Haas Racing Expands to a 4 car team probably in 2012 who will be the 2 other drivers that will drive for Stewart-Haas Racing?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Good question. The popular choice earlier in the year would have been Danica Patrick and Kasey Kahne. Kahne is now committed to Hendrick and Patrick might have a choice between SHR and JR Motorsports if it moves up to Cup by then. It would be great to see Stewart bring in a new driver he has developed through his Sprint cars, bring some new blood into the sport and give somebody a chance like Gibbs gave him.

Dave (Delaware)

hey terry with the season almost to the end can denny and harvick dethrone jimmie do you think he is accually pressured this season unlike past seasons whats your opions and pick for the cup and who do you take to win texas i say kenseth thanks

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Not Terry, but will answer the question. Sure one of those two could win, but Jimmie has ice water running through his veins. I don't think the pressure matters. He had less than a 10-point lead over Gordon two years ago with three to go and rolled on. He's rallied from behind to win at this point as well. I like Johnson or Kyle Busch to win this weekend. Haven't decided which.

Mark (Work )

whats going on with the rpm situation they cant leave nascar they just signed ambrose and have allmendinger for a powerhouse do you see them fixing there problems

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

They appear safe for the remainder of the season and my guess is they'll survive next year. Petty and Gillett are survivors. But the financial situation is bad and investors will have to step up. If they don't, Ambrose and Allmendinger will be looking for rides. Pretty sure AJ will find something if Best Buy is committed to him as I hear.

VickersFan (Work )

will vickers be in the 83 next season or the 82 or will he not return to redbull at all

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

If he returns he'll be in the 83. Kahne will be inthe 82, although that could be changed to the 4. Doctors have given Vickers clearance to drive, but until he is off of blood thinners for a while there's no way to say for sure he'll be back. Think he'll go off of them sometime within the month. If he can't return, they always have the option of Scott Speed.

nascar123 (home )

any word on possibly changing the chase next season

David Newton
  (2:09 PM)

None yet. NASCAR has backed away from its original claim that changes would be made. Think the negative feedback from fans made them take a second look.

Ryan (Reynoldsburg,Ohio)

Whats your favorite part of you job

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

Working the garage. Love to find out secrets.

Luis (Pennsylvania)

Is the chase down to just Johnson, Harvick, and Hamlin?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Yep. Pretty much. But three's better than one.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, any word on how many NW cars Roush will have next year?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Not sure. Hearing they may put a Truck or two back in the show, so that may impact the numbers. Would guess at least two.

Rick (Philly)

With three races to go we are all focused on the championship. Lost in all of this though is that once again the 48 will finish in the top 5. Every year if this teams existance they have at least finished 5th. Forget everything else they have accomplished, how big is this particular stat given the competition we have today?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Says all you need to know about how great that team is. Nobody else can make that claim.

Ryan (Ventura CA)

David thoughts on the race? Mine zzzzzz until 15 to go. What can nascar do aero wise to stop the two car breakaway. I don't remember that problem with the old carThank you

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Won't say it was a snooze. Lots of action going on, you just had to look for it. But as far as the top contenders they were waiting for the final push. As for the two-car breakaway, the only way to stop that is for NASCAR to disallow bump drafting. They tried to force drivers to back away from that last year and it backfired. As long as the cars are designed the way they are it'll continue.

Tracy (CT)

The 55 is not on the entry list for Texas. What is the matter, start and park not paying enough? Haha

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Didn't notice that. Wlll take a look.

Tracy (CT)

I thought anytime, no matter what the reason, you went bellow the yellow and passed a driver, you had to give the spot back? So why was the 18 allowed to get away with it twice this weekend? Anyone else has been told by NASCAR to give the spot back or be black flagged. NASCAR really wonders why people don't watch? Maybe they should look at this.

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

NASCAR says they allowed Busch's pass in the Truck race because he was trying to save his car and not trying to improve his position. I don't buy that logic. Replays show Kyle may have gotten the lead before going below the line. It's a fine line for sure.

Tracy (CT)

IS NASCAR ever going to tell us what they decided about certain drivers ruining the NW series for the young drivers?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

My guess is they're gonna save that for the banquet in Vegas so they'll have some news for us. But know some teams are making plans for Cup guys not being allowed to compete for the title.

chris (sexville)

what are you selling for sex lol who do you think is going to win it all now that Dega is over?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

I'd still put my money on Johnson. Between Harvick and Hamlin I like Hamlin. Not selling anything by the way. Read my column on ESPN.com and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Breaking News (NJ )

I guess the cat is out the bag and EGR will be staying with Chevy. Check this pic out from JPM. That is the best news we have heard today. Switching to Ford would of been a downfall for EGR in my opinion. See the pic here: http://twitpic.com/339er4

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

There never was consideration for switching. The Earnhardt part of the equation will always be Chevrolet.

Vanessa (Anaheim, CA)

Hi David, we are a Toyota family so we were disappointed that Reuitman helped Harvick to a good finish instead of helping his Toyota teammates, Rowdy and Denny, but we were furious after the race when Harvicks thanked Ruiitman, 'for pushing us all day". My question , since has tried to hurt Toyota 2 times in the chase will Toyota step in and do something about him?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

You know, I may run Reut down here at the SEMA show at noon and ask him about that. Can't blame him for not wanting to help a Gibbs guy after all that Kyle has said about him this year.

RAY GORDON REID ( ELPASO TX 79998)

QUESTION TO TERRY BLOUNT AT 2.20 PM HI TERRY WHO YOU HAVE FOR FORT WORTH SUNDAY

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

You'll have to ask on Wednesday.

Vanessa (Anaheim, CA)

Rowdy has 21 NASCAR wins in 2010. With 9 races left to run, how many races do you think Rowdy will win in 2010?

David Newton
  (2:19 PM)

23.

Vanessa (Anaheim, CA)

What kinds of off-season changes will Coach, JD, Rowdy and Dave make to the #18 team to make them championship contenders in 2011?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Nothing major. They were pretty close to that this year. Kyle just needs to find more consistency to be a contender.

Chris (Watkins Glen )

I think Harvick will lose the championship by as many points as he could have gotten by beating Bowyer.

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Could be.

Eric (Upper Malboro, MD)

Hello David and thanks for the chats, what does Lee White of TRD have to say about Reuitman ruining Kyle's championship hopes at Kansas and now for helping Harvick at Dega instead of the JGR Toyotas?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Haven't talked to Lee about that, but in the heat of battle all bets are off for the most part.

Jason (Camp Hill, PA)

Did it raise eyebrows within the media that a veteran like Dale jr would make a rookie mistake in wrecking out Burton?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Burton didn't think so. He just said it was a mistake and he could have done a better job as well. It happens.

Brian (Middletown, PA)

I am not complaining, I know the new car is safer for the drivers, and I am happy about that, but it seems with the spoiler this season, and the new nose for next, why is NASCAR going back to basically the same look on the new car as the old car?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

Don't think you will see it all twisted up as the pre-COT was.

SCOTT (DENTON,TX)

RIGHT NOW IT IS COLD AND WET WINDY DOWN HEAR ANYWAY.BUT EVERYTHING SHOULD BE OKAY FOR THE RACE ON SUNDAY CAUSE I AM GOING TO THE RACE ON SUNDAY ANYWAY WHAT DID YOU THING ABOUT THAY ALWAYS EXCIDING RACE I DID NOT SEE THE BIG ONE AS THEY CALL IT I THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD ONE WHAT IS YOUR OPION ON IT.

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

I was pretty tense watching the final 20 laps or so, so it was pretty exciting from my viewpoint. Hope it warms up for the weekend.

Kevin (Toledo)

Can you see less than 43 entries to a race next year?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Could happen, but sure there'll be some start and parkers stepping up to get the easy money and prevent it. By the way, it wouldn't be horrible to have less than 43 in the field.

Shannon (Virginia Beach, VA)

Hi David, 2 questions: do you think the Cowboys can win Sun. nite at Lambeau and if Dale jr goes winless again what can Hendricks do to make #88 competitive in 2011?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

Think the Cowboys have tanked it, but don't think Dale Jr. has. Not sure what Hendrick can change. Dale Jr. and whoever his crew chief are just need to find a way to make Dale Jr. comfortable in the car.

Brian (Middletown, PA)

Did Jeff Gordon have an engine issue at Dega, or could that have been his way at "getting" back at the 48? The conspiracy theorist in me wants to know.

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

I'd like to know as well. Seemed odd the way it all unfolded, and then to have Jeff back at the end. Haven't talked to anybody with the team about it but sure that'll come up this weekend.

Chad (Illinois)

Have you ever written an article and then thought..."well that will get a response from tonistert14 or DJIC?" But on a serious note, don't you think it would have been better if Sunday was settled with a G-W-C? I don't like the white flag lap & freeze the field finishes.

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

No on the first part. I'm OK with freezing the field once the leader has taken the white flag. Otherwise we might still be there finishing this thing.

SCOTT (DENTON,TX)

EVERYBODY IS STILL TALKING ABOUT WHERE ELLIOT SADLER IS GOING TO BE WHERE DO YOU SEE HIM AT THE BEGINING OF NEXT YEAR WHEN DAYONA COMES AROUND IN FEBRUARY 2011 SEASON COMES IF SO WHAT TEAM DO YOU SEE FIT FOR HIM.

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

I definitely see him in Trucks and some Nationwide races for KHI. He's still working on other possibilities, but nothing definite.

Jake (Irving, TXq)

Hi Newt, exacly what give the ECR engines their clear power advantage and who do Gibbs and Roush close the hp gap?

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Not an engineer, so can't say exactly what they have found to give the extra horsepower. But these things run in cycles and the others aren't that far off.

RAYGORDONREID ( QUITMAN TX 75753)

QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON HI DAVID 2.30 PM WHO YOU HAVEFOR FORT WORTH SUNDAY

SCOTT (DENTON,TX)

NOW THAT JJ SURVIVE THE BIG AND THE LITTLE'S TRACK ON THE SCHEDULE TALKING ABOUT TALLADEGA AND MARTINSVILLE DO YOU THING THAT HE WILL PLAY IT SAVE OR JUST DRIVE HARD AS HE CAN LIKE HE'S BEEN DOING ALL YEAR WITH JUST THREE RACE'S TO GO IN THE SEASON.

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

First, JJ didn't survive the little track. He's usually great at Martinsville. But he did survive Dega with a decent finish and I suspect this will go down to the wire. As I wrote Monday, too close to call.

Jake (Irving, TX)

Do you think it is unfair of Harvick to indirectly blame Jimmie and #48 for NASCAR's problems by saying it is better if #48 doesn't win the championship?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Did he say it that way? Don't remember that one. Many do believe it would be best for the sport to have a new champion, but I don't think it hurts to have JJ win again. It's history, dude.

Tracy (CT)

Just an FYI for the guy who asked about Turner MotorsportsTurner Motorsports will announce 2011 plans for both its NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Series programs on Friday, November 5 at 2:30pm CT. The announcement will include driver and sponsor line-up as well as manufacturer and engine supplier details.(Turner Motorsports PR)

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Thanks for the reminder. Had completely forgotten about it.

John (GA)

It's Daytona February 2011, who won't be in the field, that we currently see week in and week out?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Several, Possibly Elliott Sadler, Scott Speed. Sure there could be more. Who would be your picks?

Corey (NC)

How about David Newton Motorsports? Raygordon Reid can be the primary driver (if you can figure out what zip code he's really in).

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

I would need investors.

William (Garner, NC)

How did Gordon finish 8th when he said his motor was blowing up when he pulled out of line and stopped helping Jimmie?

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

Good question.

Todd (GA)

Do you think that JR motorsports is working on moving up to cup and having JR and Danica driving for them in 2012?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Not sure about Junior, but Danica would be a good bet if they decide to make that move. Junior has said he wants to drive for Hendrick as long as he'll have him.

Marcus (VA)

I just read an article that speculated that drivers may be holding their tongue if fear of "Jr Nation". Citing that Jeff Burton has been highly critical of several drivers in the past, but when it was Jr who wrecked him he didn't seem to mind as much. Do you side with this author? Or do you think that it is possible that Dale Jr may just be more highly respected in the garage area for his style of driving?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

I don't buy they're biting their tongues. Who wrote this?

SCOTT (DENTON'TX)

I HEARD THAT TREVOR BAYNE IS GOING TO MAKE HE'S NASCAR DEBUT ON SATURDAY HOW DO YOU THING HE WILL DO ON HE'S FIRST TIME OUT ON SATURDAY IT IS GOING TO BE WITH THE NUMBER 21 CAR FOR RCR.

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Think he's in the Wood Brothers 21 for Sunday's race if he makes the field. He has to qualify the car.

Turk (Mich)

What's up with Reuitman doing more to help the enemy by wrecking out Rowdy and now helping Harvick then he does to help Toyota?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Reutimann helped a few guys on Sunday. Harvick was just there at the right time. Reut probably thought that was his best chance to win.

Marcus (VA)

Do you think that Dale Jr's level of success with his very next crew chief, whomever that may be, will make or break his career and how much longer he decides to drive?

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

If they change and he continues to rank where he is in points into 2011 it has to have some impact, don't you think?

Scott (Manchester, NH)

There has been talk of changing the chase around a bit in the past year or so, if Johnson doesn't win it all this year do you think they will leave it alone? Or do you think they will still change it around some?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

I'm looking for minor tweaks, maybe expanding to 15 Chase drivers. Not so sure they'll go with the elmination deal, although there are some who believe that would be good for the sport. Not me, however.

Kevin (Toledo, Ohio)

Do you see Sam Hornish returning to the IRL?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

I don't. He really wants to make it in NASCAR. He'll take a Nationwide ride if that's what it takes to prove himself.

Larry (NJ)

Is Ganassi the satelite team of RCR like SHR is to Hendricks?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Not to that extreme, but there are some similarities.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

If Danica keeps on inproving the rest of this year & the 13 or 14 races next year do you see Danica going nascar full time in the nationwide series in 2012.

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

I do. Think that has been the plan all along.

Carlos (Pembroke Pines, Fl)

Conventional wisdom say's dont bump draft in the corners at Dega. So why was Dale jr bump drafting in the corners at Dega?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

Because NASCAR backed off of saying they couldn't and because Dale Jr. believes he has the expertise to pull it off.

Mark (Mount Airy,MD)

Afternoon David, will Paul Menard drive in the Nationwide Series full time next season or will he be part time in one of the KHI cars?????

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Since RCR is turning its Nationwide program over to KHI he'll likely share one of the two KHI cars with Sadler and other RCR teammates.

Andrew (NJ)

Didn't see the race sunday, but someone told me Paul Menard had a chance to win. Is that right?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Yep. A lot of people did, however.

Den (NJ )

Seen a pic on JPM's Twitter of their new chevy for 2011 with updated nose. Looks like chip has made his pick.

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

Never thought it would be anything else if you've followed what I've reported.

SCOTT (DENTON'TX)

IT IS THE DEAL WITH THE TWO CAR DRAFT AT TALLEDEGA IN YEAR'S PAST IT USE TO BE A THREE OR FOUR FIVE CAR DRAFT NOW IT IS WHEN YOU GO WITH TWO IT SEEMS FASTER WITH THAT NOW.

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

The aerodynamics of the new car have changed things dramatically to make two cars better than large packs for some reason. Need to get an engineer on here before next year to explain further.

TG (PA)

How much candy did you eat for halloween?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Not a bite. Trying to stay with the Mark Martin diet as much as possible, although did have a slide of pizza last night.

Corey (Raleigh, NC)

Will there be anyone running for Rookie of the Year next year? Trevor Bayne? Justin Allgaier? Raygordon Reid?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

I hope so. Strange not really having that race this year.

Brian (Middletown, PA)

Is Tracy (CT) not a fan of Kyle Busch?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Traci, care to answer?

Donny (San Antonio)

At 25 years old, Rowdy Busch already has 83 NASCAR wins. Assuming he's racing into his 50's like Mark Martin how many wins do you think Rowdy could accumulate?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

If he goes to 50 200 is realistic. And Busch isn't trying to claim he's trying to break Richard Petty's record. He and we all know that Petty's 200 were at the top level, not spread out. Busch just likes the challenge. He set 200 as a goal and wants to get there.

Emily (NJ)

David, why did nascar implement the tapered spacer in the Nationwide series to begin with?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

To control horsepower.

Donny (San Antonio)

If racing is a business and Ford offered a better financial package than Cheve, than why isn't Ganassi going with Ford?

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

First, it's not simply Ganassi's decision. He has the Earnhardt's to consider and they are embedded with Chevy. Second, why go with another product when you know what you have is the best right now?

Ryan (Ventura CA)

Love to find out secrets.Secrets? Do tell!

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

You know, investigating. Reporting.

Marybeth (Philly )

Do u think Mark will beat Jamie for the 13th position in the points? Where do u think he will finish on Sunday? He hasnt finished lower than 14th since Dover. He has the best avg finish since the COT has been around.

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

I'm going with Jamie. He should do well at the final three races.

Tracy (CT)

Will said NW changes also apply to trucks? (he who must not be named would just run every race there if they take him outa a NW car).

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Makes sense, but really not a factor.

Emily (NJ)

David, I don't understand why Ford is struggling so much. Out of Chevy, Dodge, and themselves, they are the only ones that did not take bailout money and are earning profits, yet they can't do great on the race track. What gives?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Patience. These things run in cycles. A year ago RCR cars struggled.

Cliff (Murfreesboro, TN)

Hey, David, love your work! I was curious, any word of who's going to pick up the rest of the races that Budweiser DOESNT sponsor on the 29 next year?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Thanks. No word on who will fill the 29, but sure Richard Childress has something up his sleeve.

Jolt (IglooNATION)

David, how about those KC Chiefs? In reality though, any word on when we'll see the new Penske paint schemes for next season?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

Just tell them to give the ball more to Jones this weekend. Need the fantasy points. No word on Penske paint scheme.

Moncho (Hatillo)

What you hear about Ganassi and Ford.

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

That they're going to remain in Chevys.

Bill S. (High Point,NC)

Come on Newt, you can call it "top level" but some of those were dirt and 20 car fields. Petty was still remarkable but the 200 number is not as amazing as 200 would be for Kyle and todays competition.

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Agree, and many of the races Petty won were against lesser competition than what Kyle faces in the Nationwide Series. But I can't change what was the top level back then and the surfaces.

Ryan (Dallas, TX)

God Bless Texas and Eddie Gossage....All ready for Race Weekend and Babe's Chicken after the Nationwide Race on Saturday...GReat weather is on its way

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

So what did you think of the column on "sex sells?"

Kyle (Burlington, VT)

I know the career stats say these last few tracks are a wash, but don't forget, Denny Hamlin is defending race winner at 2 of the 3 tracks remaining and is no slouch at Phoenix. Should this give us hope that someone will dethrone Jimmie?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Also don't forget Jimmie hasn't had to really push for a win at Homestead the past four years. If push comes to shove I believe he has it in him. His numbers are pretty impressive.

Tony (SF)

Newt, I'd like your feelings on this. During the race it was said that someoone driving a Toyota should fall back to help out Hamlin before he went a lap down. If that were me, I wouldn't help - Hamlin should earn the right to get back on the lead lap by himself, not with help from another Toyota team. Not that it mattered in the end anyways, but still......

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

I was hoping Waltrip wouldn't drop back because Hamlin made his bed and should be forced to rally, as he did. Much better that way.

SCOTT (DENTON'TX)

what do you means sex sells david.

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Read the column. http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/nascar/cup/columns/story?columnist=newton_david&id=5752785

Turk (Mich.)

What happened between Richard Petty and Kyle Petty and why isn't Kyle helping to save RPM?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

You mean since Richard basically had to fire Kyle a few years ago? Kyle believes the team made its bed when it moved from the long-time shp in Randelman, N.C. He's content doing what he does now.

Sam (48town)

is jj gonna have a max points day at texas? and phoenix?

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Odds are much better at Phoenix than Texas. Look at the numbers in Monday rundown.

Jolt (IglooNATION)

Will the National Guard be sponsoring Gordon at all next year? That black and silver scheme has been wicked awesome compared to the blue and white boringness that is Dale Jr.'s colors.

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Right now he has 22 races with AARP's Drive to end hunger and 14 with DuPont. Sure some of those could be sold off for National Guard, but nothing has been announced at the moment.

Marco (Fayetteville, NC)

Back 10 years ago it seemed like drivers owning race teams didn't work but now it does with Robby Gordon, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick etc. What changed?

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

I wouldn't say Robby Gordon has been a huge success in Cup, and the others are at lower levels. What changed for those guys is they are getting engine and chassis support from strong Cup teams that they drive for.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

That's it for me. Don't forget to join live race day chat on ESPN.com on Sunday. And if you missed the sex sells column link, here it is again. http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/nascar/cup/columns/story?columnist=newton_david&id=5752785. Later.
