Chat with Kevin Seifert

Kevin Seifert
  (1:59 PM)

Hi everyone. Anybody got anything interesting to chat about? It's been a pretty dull week so far....

Nathan (Coralville, IA)

As much as I hate to stand up for Randy Moss--weren't all of his points somewhat valid? If the coaching staff was really ignoring him when he was trying to give them inside information on the Patriots--man, that's way past arrogance and well into Crazytown. And the Vikings SHOULD have went for the field goal right before the half! Able to go up three on the Patriots at Foxboro... Makes me think the wrong guy was handed his walking papers.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:01 PM)

Sounds like you're not alone in that sentiment, Nathan. Regardless of whether Moss' points were valid, my feeling is the Vikings needed to decide whether they would put up with his antics before they made the deal. Everything that happened has occurred before with Moss. Essentially, they traded for Moss and cut Moss because he was Moss.

Dom (NY)

Talk about a team looking absolutely clueless and not doing their due diligence. The shot at Favre last week, the Moss situation this week, the defense unable to apply pressure all season. It's not like Brad Childress was being compared to Lombardi or Shula going into this year, he was also a major question mark. This year has totally blown up in their faces. Is they any chance that the Vikings won't clean house at year's end?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:02 PM)

The bigger question is whether Childress makes it through the season. The only time I've ever heard Zygi Wilf say a negative word was when he reprimanded Childress for brashly cutting Marcus Robinson in 2006. He made clear to Childress he didn't expect those kinds of moves again. Now it's happened. You don't always get away with disobeying the boss.

Tramon Williams (GB)

Am I the best corner in the NFC North?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:04 PM)

I would say it's a toss-up between you and Antoine Winfield, but I think you're the best pure cover guy out there right now. Charles Woodson is obviously a big-time player but hasn't had the same kind of year as 2009. Winfield has had the ultimate compliment paid to him this year: No one is throwing his way.

Matt Stafford (Det)

Bow down. We're gonna win the division.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:05 PM)

It's very clear that no one is out of the NFC North race. The Packers, Bears and Vikings all have to hit Ford Field before the year is up.

Brad (Wichita)

What does Sunday's win over the jets say about the job McCarthy and Thompson have done in GB. They had 7 starters out for that game, Grant, Finley, Taushcer, Pickett, Barnett, Jones, Burnett and another one in Driver that wasn't a factor. What other team in the NFL could survive that decimation.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:06 PM)

I think you have to throw Dom Capers' name in that list, too. He's the one who had to scheme it up with Howard Green and the rest of the replacements he was handed. Tremendous job by him.

Tarvaris Jackson (The Bench)

First two throws were scores? Why don?t people give me respect?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:06 PM)

Because your next play was an inexcusable sack.

Brad (Wichita)

What role do you see Al Harris and Atari Bigby playing for Green Bay?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:07 PM)

I think Bigby eventually becomes the starting SS. Harris, I would assume, will be the nickel guy. I don't think you take Tramon Williams or Charles Woodson off the field for him, do you?

inkedlawyer (Fort Worth, Texas)

Although I agree that Moss does not fit with the Lions, Mayhew has been the master of the Waiver Wire pick up this season. What are the odds that he grabs Moss and tries to parlay him into some draft picks next year?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:07 PM)

Interesting. It would be a risk, in the event no one wants to make a deal, and probably not worth the distraction.

Rodger Goodell (The Boss)

How do you feel about teams signing players with inside knowledge of their opponents? Like the packers signing Howard Green after he spent the first part of the week on the Jets Roster? Should this be against the rules?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:08 PM)

Nope. It's smart football. But in this case, Green was actually a much-needed player.

Austen (Louisville, KY)

If Suh continues to play like he has is a Defensive Player of the year award out of the question?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:09 PM)

No. Right now he's on pace for Jevon Kearse's rookie record for sacks, and sacks are often what people judge by. DPOY might be tough, but he will certainly be a candidate if he continues this play.

Freddy (Perham)

Is there ANY chance that Ziggy, the man that fought desperately to bring Moss back to Minnesota, overrule Childress and not waive Moss?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:10 PM)

Can't see it happening.

Bill (Chicago)

Hey Kevin, either your writing is getting funnier or the Vikings are providing some great material. Which injury do you think is hurting the Packers offense the most, Finley or Grant? I say the latter simply because the Packers have no one who can pick up the slack whereas they have receivers who can absorb some of the lost output from Finley's absence.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:11 PM)

Ha, thanks. It's an interesting question. I think a big part of the Grant issue is that they clearly didn't have a legitimate replacement in-house. That's why the dropoff has been so huge. As for Finley, the entire offense was built around him. I still think he was a bigger loss.

MIGUEL (Riverside)

If Wilf is going to fire Chilly, then why NOT keep Moss and promote Frazier? That said, if he was influencing Harvin and other young guys, I'd want him gone too.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:12 PM)

Yeah, I think the fact that Wilf allowed this move to go through indicates there will be no immediate firing. And again, if they were worried about him influencing young players, they shouldn't have made the deal in the first place.

Forrest (Indianapolis, IN)

Kevin,I think everyone would agree with me when I say that the Lions offensive line has improved drastically (they've only allowed 12 sacks so far this year, I think) - but why are they only averaging 80-some rushing yards per game? Is it because their primary back is a rookie? Are they playing superior run defenses? Are they throwing the ball more than they should be? I feel that they will need their running game to play a huge part in their offense during the second half of the season.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:14 PM)

They are definitely a pass-first team, which they should be given their skill players. But they also don't have the kind of 20-carry grinder that will help push up rushing numbers. As we stand here today, though, I wouldn't call it problematic.

Chris (NY)

Hey Kevin, am I the only Cheesehead that thinks the offense needs to clear up its miscommunication issues either this week or during the bye? because the Pack have the meat of their schedule in the 2nd half, including games against the Giants, at Atlanta and at New England

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

There's no doubt about it, although I caution people from getting too worked up about a 9-point game on the road against perhaps the best defense in the NFL. Sometimes you have to tip your cap to the other team.

Nathan (Phoenix, AZ)

I started Stafford and CJ on my fantasy team this week. Mmmmmmmmmm... crushing victory.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

Good job. Yeah, Stafford targeted Calvin Johnson 15 times in his first full game of the year. That's a good sign for both Lions fans and fantasy owners.

Calvin Johnson (Detroit, MI)

Do you think the Jets put Cromartie or Revis on me? Either way... they stand no chance against Megatron.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:17 PM)

For what it's worth, the Jets felt more comfortable putting the bigger Cromartie on the bigger Randy Moss a few weeks ago. So I wonder if they'll do the same thing this time. Cromartie did get beat for a touchdown but played pretty well in coverage otherwise.

Josh McDaniels (Denver, CO)

Can we have Alphonso Smith back?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:17 PM)

Wow. Talk about the all-time trades...

Aaron (St Louis)

Do you think Amari Speivey will be able to fill CC Brown shoes this weekend? As soon as he was in the game McNabb and the Skins offense went right after him. Sanchez will likely do the same, right?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:18 PM)

You would think a team would go after any rookie replacement. But there should be ways to cover up for a rookie starter from a scheme perspective.

matt (ewing, nj)

Should Peprah keep the safety job even if/when Bigby is healthy? He's not too shabby. Same for Bulaga? Williams no doubt.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:20 PM)

You would think Bulaga will be the starter here for a while, even if Tauscher gets healthy. Tauscher wasn't playing that well before he got hurt, and Bulaga is a first-round draft pick. I really liked how Peprah played in the fourth quarter the other day, but ultimately they're probably going to be better off with Bigby.

Brett Favre (Minnesota)

I have aged 10 years in the last 2 months.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:20 PM)

Tell me about it. Your hair looked almost white when you climbed onto that cart the other day.

Al (FL)

Will Martz finally try to run the ball? Any interesting news out of Chicago?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:21 PM)

Well, they're coming out of their bye week so everything is kind of quiet. Roberto Garza is supposed to be ready to return this week, and he'll take over at right guard, yet another combination of line players.

Josh (Philly)

Any word on the Green Bay players on the PUP list (Bigby, Harris)?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:21 PM)

Unlikely to come before this weekend.

Brandon Pettigrew (Allen Park, MI)

You know... if I can avoid holding people, I've got some mid 2000s Alge Crumpler qualities.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:22 PM)

And if you can stabilize your catching. You make some great catches and then let some passes go that you should have hung on to. But overall, a very impressive start to the year.

Jay Cutler (Chicago, IL)

Let the record show that I did not throw any INTs this week.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:22 PM)

Fact!

James (Denver)

Last season Rodgers held on to the ball too long, which contributed to the high sack total and low interception numbers. He worked on it over the off season. I'm wondering if the "fix" has anything to do with his performance this season. Thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:23 PM)

No, because I think the fix was put into place at the end of last year. I don't have an answer for why Rodgers has been less accurate this year. He has just said he isn't playing as well as he would like.

Craig (Braintree MA)

I've seen some stuff that Jared Allen is injured. Is there any truth to this rumor?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:24 PM)

I have not heard that, but it would explain his low sack totals. But he hasn't even been on the injury report this year. It would be a pretty good secret if it were true.

Green Bay Coaching Staff ([in the office])

Dallas comes to town this week! Awesome!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:24 PM)

It ought to be easy to out-coach them!

Stephen (Bogotá, Colombia)

Kevin, I really enjoy your perspective on the blog. As Vikings fans, if Brad Childress is fired this year, can we consider this season a relative success?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:27 PM)

Thanks and ha! Given how much effort the Vikings put into making a run at it this year, I don't think your scenario would be a net gain.

Spartan Scion (East Lansing, MI)

The Lions have scored more points than any other NFC team, including several teams that have yet to have their bye week, any thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:28 PM)

In their best case-scenario, we thought the Lions could be a high-scoring offense with a defensive line that overwhelmed opponents and wreaked havoc. That's what they have been in their two victories this season.

Santana Moss (Washington DC)

*a little embarassed I tried to tackle SUH-perman*

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

Yeah, you better bring more than that next time.

Craig (Braintree MA)

Has Randy actually been placed on waivers yet?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

If it happens, we'll find out after 4 p.m. ET. But their updated roster no longer has his name on it.

Joe (Cali)

Do the Lions now have the best DL in the NFC North?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:30 PM)

This year, absolutely.

Randy Moss (New England)

Where would I fit in most in the NFC North? Greenbay,Chicago or Detroit !?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

Would be stunned if it happened. No fit seen.

Michael (Norfolk)

Why don't the Packers ever get any coverage from ESPN when they win? It's always about how the other teams lost, particularly last week with the Jets and the Vikings. Nobody seems to be giving them any credit for a great win against the Jets.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

They'll get their due.

Nick (WI)

What's the deadline for claiming Moss on waivers?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:31 PM)

Assuming he's placed on waivers today, the deadline is tomorrow.

DaBearz84 (Not Minny)

Are you going to turn this into a Vikings chat like you have turned the NFCN blog into a Vikings blog? Just an honest question!?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:33 PM)

Sorry DB. As I've said many times, news doesn't parcel out in 25 percent doses on a daily basis. Over time, it evens out. But I must say your persistence in this issue is quite amazing.

TDBuddah (Titletown)

IMO, A.J. Hawk is playing at a Pro Bowl Level. Do you agree?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:33 PM)

Hmmm,uhhhhh, well...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:34 PM)

I don't know if I would go that far. But he's made some major improvements since hardly getting on the field in Week 1.

brett (SD)

Do you think this has anything to do with the fact that Chilly hates confrontation. He dealt with TO in Philly. Chilly released Culpepper just because he wouldn't train in Minnesota. Your thoughts

Kevin Seifert
  (2:36 PM)

I think he rigidly takes an unbending approach to his job. Childress has a way he expects things to be done and isn't flexible about it. If you run astray of that, you're out. Done deal.

Tramon Williams (GB)

What's my contract situation like? Am I going to get paid?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:37 PM)

You're in a one-year contract and reportedly received an offer recently. But the way you're playing, it might make sense to let it ride.

Brando (Fargo)

I'm a Vikes fan Seifert, but even I think there's too much coverage of them on the blog (especially with how embarrissing they are lately). Do you prefer to write about them, coporate pushes it for click-throughs, or you just follow the interesting stories path?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:38 PM)

I know everyone has their opinion, but to me it's the latter. I'm sure I've written more about them than any of the other teams, but they've had more blog-worthy things going on. To me, the worst thing I can do is minimize those stories to create some sort of artificial balance.

Jason (La Crosse)

"No one is throwing his way" Why would they when you can beat Allen all day?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:39 PM)

Fair enough, in reference to Winfield. But it's been pretty overwhelming.

Mike McCarthy (Green Bay)

Two games in a row with smart challenges after a long history of not-so-bright red flag tossing. How did I manage that?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:40 PM)

Not sure, but we should give credit where credit is due. The big thing is always to trust someone's eyes, not their heart. Sometimes I think McCarthy has gotten caught up in the emotions of a call.

Martin Mayhew (Allen Park, MI)

Trading for Corey Williams, Chris Houston, Jonathon Wade, Rob Sims, Alphonso Smith, and Tony Scheffler, signing Kyle Vanden Bosch and Nate Burleson, followed by drafting Ndamukong Suh and Jahvid Best this offseason, is it possible that I finally have the Detroit Lions on the right track and playoffs are not out of the realm of possiblity next season?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:42 PM)

So far so good, although I would say some of those players have made bigger impacts than others. But you're definitely on the right track.

James (Detroit)

How crazy would the standings be if that Calvin Johnson play was ruled a catch in week 1 against Chicago?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:44 PM)

Yeah, the worst-case scenario is that that game/play has an impact on a playoff berth. You hope it doesn't come to that.

Brett Favre (MN)

So my secret is out. I have a Fountain of Youth. How else would I look half-dead being wheeled off of the field, and then be all smiley during my press conference?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:44 PM)

I have to say that was amazing. I was not expecting to see you (or Moss, for different reasons) in that interview room.

Calvin (Motown)

Do you still think Greg Jennings is the best WR in the division???

Kevin Seifert
  (2:46 PM)

I don't think I ever said that.

Nick (WI)

Was Finley getting hurt a positive for the Packers? It feels like Rodgers had locked in to him too much, and now he's spreading the ball around more. Reminds me of when Sterling Sharpe got hurt early in Favre's career.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:47 PM)

No way. Having him on the field opened up a whole lot of other options.

Don (MN)

A third rounder for 4 games? Are they nuts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:48 PM)

Yes, that is the cost of poor communication and a lack of due diligence.

Clay Matthews III (GB)

Lets not kid ourselves, I am the DPLOY am I not?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:49 PM)

Yeah, to think we could have a 1-2 ballot in the NFC North with you and Suh!

Michael (Norfolk)

Think Desmond Bishop is a rising star for the Pack?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:49 PM)

I'm glad to see that he is taking advantage of his opportunity.

Christopher (Los Angeles)

Rodgers hasnt been playing too well this year, how long before the beard back and returns to throwing more efficiently?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:50 PM)

Another Samson victim! He should consult with Jared Allen on that one.

Nick (WI)

Does Childress lie to the players as much as he lies to the public/media? If so, no wonder the locker room is in total disarray.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

I think that's a big question. I don't know the answer to it, but I do know the players are fully aware of what he says to the public/media. Everyone treats these things differently, but when you know that a guy regularly doesn't tell the truth in one arena, aren't you going to inspect what he tells you a little bit more?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

Ok y'all, a couple more here.

Asher Allen (Winter Park)

did I forget how to play football on Sunday?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:52 PM)

Maybe I was the only one who blamed Madieu Williams on that play as much as you. The safety has to be able to make the tackle before the cutback.

Chris (at my computer)

Here's your next "Have at it". Brett Favre retires first or Chilly gets fired first?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:53 PM)

Ha. That would would inspire a few comments.

Jack (The Island)

What are the odds you put on Martz's system coming together after the bye? Personally id go..25%

Kevin Seifert
  (2:54 PM)

Not the system as is. He has got to run the ball more. But the more concerning thing is that it Cutler hasn't looked equipped to run this offense. He's holding the ball too long and getting frustrated too quickly. It takes a special personality, and so far he hasn't had it.

Brad (KS)

What ever happened to the Williams Wall suspensions?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:55 PM)

Still in the court system.

Jim Schwartz (Detroit)

Do I seem less angry this season?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:55 PM)

You have less to be angry about.

BionicLion (Det)

The power rankings just came out. Lions 27th, come on.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:56 PM)

Moving in the right direction!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:57 PM)

OK everyone, thanks so much. Chat with you next week!
