Welcome to another live chat! Thanks for your questions. Let's begin!
I see you ranked Auburn 4th, did you rank BSU and TCU higher because of there one maybe two quality wins this year compared to Auburn's four or five so far. Basically, why did you rank them higher and don't say they are more of an all around team because they are only playing 70th ranking or worse teams all year.
So if I shouldn't say they are more of an all around team, then I should make up a reason? Because that is my reason. They are not playing 70th or worse teams all year, Mike. Yes, some of the teams they have played are bad. But some of the teams they have played are good. I look at the team, and the players on the team, and when I do my rankings, I try not to drop teams after they win by 40 points. Boise State and TCU have better defenses than Auburn. Am I allowed to say that?
If UCF was in the Big East this season (hopefully it happens in the future), where would the Knights finish? How far would finishing in the top 25 of the BCS go toward getting UCF in the Big East?
It's too bad UCF and USF don't play because I think this would finally be the year the Knights win. With the way they are playing this year, I absolutely believe they would contend for the conference title. I don't think finishing in the Top 25 of the BCS standings is going to matter much. UCF is already on the radar. The big question is whether the Big East wants UCF as a football-only member and whether UCF agrees. AD Keith Tribble has said in the past it's all or nothing.
with big sky adding 4 schools, are they worried about losing both Montana schools and Weber St.
Montana is sticking to FCS the school announced today so I think they are staying put.
Any chance Stanzi gets a Heisman invite if they win out?
Good question, Dan. This may be a year where only four players get invites, depending on how everything goes down. He is going to have to be really, really impressive to get an invite.
Hi Andrea! Great to see you again. How about that Stanford win!? Woo Hoo! Should we have our sights higher than the Rose Bowl or do you think Oregon is too tough to beat in the Pac-10? I cant help but root them on. Harbaugh has done such a great job, Im so impressed. Thanks!
Hi Rachel. Stanford needs Oregon to lose twice to have a shot at the Pac-10 title, thanks to the head-to-head lose. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening. And if Stanford wins out, the Cardinal may not even go to the Rose Bowl, depending on what happens with TCU, Boise State and the national championship game. Harbaugh has done an outstanding job. Can't blame you for rooting them on.
Hi Andrea. Any chance of the San Jose St Spartans finishing up strong? Even with all these injuries? I love Coach Mac and think he has them in the right direction despite the poor record. Your thoughts?
Chris, you have to feel for a team that has gone through as many injuries as SJ State this year. I remember Mac said a few weeks ago they barely had enough players to go two deep at practice. Utah State is a winnable game, but I just don't see a 4-0 stretch to close things out. The team is just too depleted.
4D - The Idaho Statesman is reporting that the Rose Bowl would still possibly choose Boise State as an at-large if TCU plays for the National Championship because they would be ranked #3 and they are worried they might get stuck with a less desirable Non-AQ team in the future. Seems like a smart move to me but it would suck for Stanford. Your thoughts?
I read that article this morning. I think it is going to be really hard for the Rose Bowl to pass on a one-loss Stanford team, honestly. I know there would be pressure re: Boise State, but the Rose Bowl loves preserving that Pac-10/Big Ten matchup. Stanford is having an incredible year and the only place it would get an at-large is to the Rose Bowl because it isn't a national draw and doesn't travel well. It's going to be a tough decision -- this is all if TCU plays Oregon in the national title game.
TCU or Boise, I wouldn't want to line up and face either team, they can both hang with anyone on any field at any time. The talk about those teams not being able to perform at the same level in the SEC, Pac-10, etc. is nonsense b/c it is not applicable. We have an imperfect system in place for determining a champion. Until that changes, we can't line 'em up and play it out. The real tragedy, in my opinion, would be that neither gets a shot. I'm sure you have studied both teams carefully, how do you feel about both teams in terms of matching up with an Oregon, Auburn, etc. in a NT game this year (b/c that's all that matters)?
Thanks for looking at this objectively, Bo. At this point, Boise State and TCU are so close it is splitting hairs trying to figure out who is the better team. However, I think they would match up well because they have stingy defenses and good offenses. Boise State has proven in the past it can beat Oregon, and TCU has proven it can shut down the best of quarterbacks. I would love to watch any matchup, but would probably love to see non-AQ vs. SEC because that is always what causes the biggest debates.
Andrea -- Cam Newton stood up publicly this week with a chance to refute the story about academic issues at Florida and did not. Three instances of cheating plus the laptop incident is a lot of baggage, without even considering the possibility of being paid six figures. Why not just refute it outright or say Im sorry I made a mistake when I was young and have learned from it?
Newton doesn't have to do anything he doesn't want to do. He already has talked about the laptop incident and apologized for it. As for the academic stuff, this is his decision alone, and I can't speak for him.
What Big East College Football Team is so Bad that they will not play in a Bowl Game?
Right now, I have Connecticut, Cincinnati and Rutgers out of bowl games.
Where will Nebraska be headed in January if they win the big 12? Or will the big 12 south keep its title for the big 12 champion another year?
Nebraska goes to the Fiesta Bowl if it wins the Big 12.
2 weeks ago U abruptly went along with the BCS in moving TCU ahead of Boise. U then moved Boise out of the NC game all in the same week. Could U please explain in brief what made U change your mind in an instant when no real issues clearly seperate the 2 teams?
Actually I have not moved TCU ahead of Boise in my power rankings. You might want to check that. I did move Boise State out of the NC game because of the BCS standings. The bowl projections serve as my guess at how the season is going to end, not as my opinion on how the season is going to end. The power rankings, however, are my opinion.
Where do you see South Alabama's football program in the next few years as they transition into FBS play in the Sun Belt? They've exceeded expectations thus far during their first two seasons, but the road ahead will be tough. Do you see them being competitive at all in their first few years in the Sun Belt?
Jim, It's always tough to be competitive right out of the gate when you join FBS. Look at the struggles at Western Kentucky, FIU, FAU for example. It is going to be tough, but there are certainly avenues open in the Sun Belt. Troy has been the king of the conference and everybody else has been a step behind. So it's not as if South Alabama is entering a situation where it's going to be an automatic laughing stock.
Your story on TCU and BSU "tearing each other apart to be #2" was a great Blog success. Nationally the country vividly took sides yet BSU and TCU fans in general refused to fight. Did the moral integtity of these 2 non-aq schools fans surprise U?
Well it depends on where you are standing. The mailbag this week was full of angry Boise State fans who were presenting all sorts of facts supporting their case over TCU. They were not mean about it, but this is clearly a topic that both sides are thinking about, and have to think about with the system we have in place.
Hi Andrea, I understand the rationale for "last year was last year" when referencing Boise's win over TCU, but isn't that a little unfair when (1) unlike a normal year, both TCU and Boise's personnel is almost the same (in fact, TCU lost more talent than Boise), and (2) all other things being equal, the two teams played just 11 months ago - how is that not a valid tiebreaker?
So is it a valid tiebreaker that Boise State also beat Oregon last year with a lot of the same players returning? Because that one gets rejected. I realize teams are ranking the preseason based on what they accomplished the season before, but at this point I think we have to look at the body of work for 2010 when we decide who we think is the better team. I think this TCU team is better than last season. Of course, I think the same of Boise State. But I am trying not to use the game last season as a tiebreaker.
Hi Andrea. Do you think the plight of Boise State may have played a factor in Montana's decision. Being in a much weakened WAC, Montana has virtually no chance at a BCS bowl for the next decade no matter what they do on the field, so what is the upside for them in terms of the next 10 years when they can continue to compete for 1-aa championships in their current spot?
It is possible, though I think the $$ and the want to continue its rivalry with Montana State had a bigger impact.
I'm back. Last week Nebraska didn't have a chance at a BCS game because they wouldn't get past Oklahoma. Now, since that scenario has changed, do you think they could? I'm going to go out on a limb and say Nebraska gets past KS & CO barring any mental lapses. BTW..have you seen the new playcard going around for a certain player of ours that chose not to take a knee in the endzone? Pretty funny stuff. Thanks.
Well, I was certainly wrong about Oklahoma, wasn't I? I now have Nebraska as the Big 12 champion, so yes I think the Huskers are back in the Fiesta Bowl after a brief stay someplace else in my bowl projections.
Perfect nickname for the weekend's games: Sleepwalk Saturday. You know you love it.
AJ, you know me too well.
Know of anywher Boise fans can go buy a waaahhhh-burger and some french cries? Maybe a Whine-akein? Or even some cheese to go with their whine? TCU beat the current #14 team by 40. Boise beat the current #16 team by 3. That team lost to 4-5 JMU.
Not sure what to say to that.
What does UCF need to do to crack the BCS rankings?
UCF is on the cusp, if the Knights win out, it should happen.
do you think south carolina will beat florida and also do you think they will beat clemson at clemson this year? what so you think sc final record will be this year
South Carolina has been one of my biggest disappointments this year. I had the Gamecocks ranked preseason Top 15, and thought this was the year to get into the SEC title game. But alas, it is never so when you are South Carolina. I have Florida winning on Saturday, but I do have South Carolina beating Clemson. The Gamecocks are in the Chik-Fil-A Bowl in my latest bowl projections.
Kellen Moore in the NFL or Kellen Moore as an Offensive Coordinator? Which is more likely/scarier?
Kellen Moore as an OC is more likely.
What is the most common argument you hear for people jumping TCU over Boise? Will Boise jump TCU if Utah loses to ND or SDSU?
Most common argument is that TCU beat No. 5 Utah on the road by 40. I don't see Boise jumping TCU in the BCS standings unless the Broncos go back ahead in the human polls.
I have the best idea for a College Football playoff format. Take all the Conference Champs and the top "X" number of teams in the nation and put them in a "Bowl Qualifying Round." Use your standard seeding procedure to determine the matchups, allowing a fair chance to more teams to prove themselves. Then you can still have some regular bowl games, then those winners move on to the BCS Championship playoffs and those can be your BCS Bowl games. The top 2 play for the Championship. Then, instead of having so many non-conference games in the beginning of the season, you can play them as more meaningful games after the conference champs are determined. Still even play a couple of non-conference games in the beginning of the season to warm up for your conference games and, in essence, have the feel of a pre-season. anyone agree or have comments?
So is this 16 teams or what? That is important. I like the idea of giving each conference champion a shot, and keeping the bowls intact, too. Anything is better than what we have now.
Andrea: I think Boise has a chance to jump TCU with their remaining games left. A ranked Nevada team and a good Freno St team will help with that. Here is another scenario: TCU plays bad against SDSU, Baylor loses its last two games, Utah loses to ND, VT wins ACC, Nevada keeps winning, and Boise has more of a chance to impress voters with 3 games on ESPN (ranked Nevada). TCU will get hurt in the computers playing 1-8 New Mexico team. I know this will happen!!
You are very convincing, Cory. I am not sure how you know this will happen. I wish I knew what was going to happen!
IF Utah loses to Notre Dame are they out of the Top 25 for good?
It would be close, and depend on who else loses. There are 3-loss teams in the Top 25 right now!
Does NIU crack the Top 25 with their win over Toledo?
Also depends on what happens with everyone else, Chris.
Andrea - Many Boise fans question how good the win over Utah is for TCU because they question "who has Utah beaten". Couldn't the same be said about Boise's upcoming game against Nevada? Nevada's big win was against a mediocre Cal team. Thoughts?
Sure, I think the fans from both can question who the other has "beaten" just like fans can also question who Oregon has beaten. If you are trying to make a point about your own school, then you are going to look for weaknesses in the other's argument.
Why do people claim boise has an elite defense when the bcs team they have played have put up 30 and 24 points, not to say auburn has an elite defense.
Don't think I said elite, Alex. I said better. And I don't know anybody out there who has said Auburn has an elite defense, either.
Hello Andrea! Why do I have a sense of worry that BSU will get left out in the cold (non BCS game) after once again getting jumped by teams they beat last year?
Because you are a fan of a non-AQ school and have heard the backlash all season and live in reality. It could very well happen, there is no two ways about it.
Who is more likely to lose TCU or Boise?
Can I say neither?
Should Boise fans be concerned about the computer discrepancy between Boise and TCU. To me is seems a product of TCU playing 2 more games and I would think they would be about equal in the computers if they both finish 12-0. Then it would just come down to the pollsters. Agree?
The pollsters play a huge role in this because the computers will be just about even at the end of the year, Nate. That is why it is imperative for Boise State to move back ahead or at least have its margin shrink (since total poll points count). I am not sure it's going to happen. Nevada has 1 loss but is No. 21, so I don't think voters are that convinced about how good they are.
Andrea, do you think losing their ESPN games next year will hurt Boise State in tehir yearly quest for a national championship shot? At least this year people get to see them beat up on their opponents be they cupcakes or decent teams. Next year who will see them play?
Well it hasn't hurt TCU, has it? It's a valid question, but I think Boise State and TCU are national enough names that people are going to pay attention regardless of what network they are on. That being said, the MWC TV deal is awful.
Typical of espn columnist, only picking questions that you can twist the answers to match what you have previously said.
Sorry to disappoint you, Alex.
TCU doesn't appear to be going to the Big Least, any rumors about the Big12?
None. No interest from the Big 12.
How can anyone in their right mind put boise st over anyone when they play patsys all year long? Join a real conference or stay relegated to second tier
I guess you have no idea how college football works, HB. Boise State cannot join a real conference unless it's invited. Nobody is inviting.
Andrea, be honest....was that you in the North Endzone in Salt Lake City causing a commotion?
Umm ... umm ... ummm ...
Does BYU go bowling?
I do have the Cougars bowling, but Colorado State this weekend is no gimme. That one could go either way, though I have BYU winning.
Everyone is critical of TCU and Boise State's schedules, but you don't see the SEC teams scheduling anyone tough outside their conference. The SEC has played only 2 teams outside their conference that are currently ranked. How do we know that the SEC is any good they don'y play anyone outside their own region?
The SEC fans will tell you it's because they play in the hardest conference in America and need a breather from playing all of the incredibly hard teams in their conference. I do give credit to Bama, LSU and Georgia who historically have gone out and played another team from a power conference at least once a year.
I gotta go pro after this season right?
Given what is happening to your buddy Jake Locker, absolutely.
whats your take on Doug Martin? I think he is the best back that we've ever had at Boise State. I see pro potential. Love your work! :)
Jill, he is a great back. You love him more than Ian Johnson, huh? Not sure on the pro potential. Thanks for reading!
What do you make of TCU's ultimatum -- all or nothing to the BE ?? You think maybe they see the new MWC is looking great in the 2010-13 evalutaion period versus the BE which is close to falling behind CUSA to be 9th in the rankings ???
Well the Big East is not losing its AQ status at this point, so I don't think that has anything to do with it. I read Chris Del Conte's comments, and I understand that athletic departments hate to have their sports separated. But this may have something more to do with future expansion, and the possibility that the Big East could end up getting raided if others decided to go large to 16 teams.
Andrea - What are the chances that UNC can pull out a victory against VT and make the ACC Coastal an interesting race?
Definitely a chance, especially after what I saw last week from Virginia Tech.
what are the chances that penn state pulls and upset over ohio state?
Small chance. I know everyone is in love with McGloin, but he hasn't played a defense quite as good as Ohio State's just yet.
what is your take on the new additions to the WAC? How long will it take for the newcomers to be competitive in fb? With Montana's announcement that they aren't coming mean that Seattle is going to get the nod?
The WAC announced today it is adding Denver, UT-San Antonio and Texas State, so no Seattle. My take is this is the only move the WAC could make. The conference is in no position to raid other conferences right now. As for how long it will take them to be competitive, depends on how good a shape the programs are in when they join. It's really hard to make that transition from FCS to FBS.
Is there a fan base in college football that complains more than the Boise bunch? I think a lot of folks would give them more respect if they didnt whine so much.
I'll let them know you feel that way.
What happened to Wyoming? After a solid first year as head coach, and an exciting win at the NM Bowl, why has the team imploded this badly? Losing to UNM? Is it Dave C's fault, or are Arroyo and English out of their depth when it comes to coordinator duties?
It's been really disappointing for Wyoming this year. ACS hasn't really improved much, and how you have 3 100-yard backs in a game and lose is beyond me. But I wonder how much the death of Narcisse has played a role, too. I don't think that is something that can be ignored.
What do you think of the Pac-12's new tie in with the New Mexico Bowl to face the MWC? Pretty lame isn't it?
What were you expecting? The entire Pac-10 bowl lineup is not very good.
If Boise State and Stanford do not make a BCS Bowl, do you think they could meet in the Hunger Bowl?
Stanford would go to the Alamo Bowl. So no.
So now that TCU could play for the NCG, where is the backlash? Seems that people are more tolerant of TCU maybe crashing but not BSU. Preseason hype maybe?
Great question. Boise State is way more polarizing than TCU. I think a lot of it has to do with the WAC. More people give credit to the MWC teams than the WAC. I am not saying it is right. I am saying that is an explanation. They see Utah, they see BYU (in the past) and they see a league that has a chance at AQ status. All things the WAC doesn't have.
Andrea, Please let the Bosie fans know that their team could have beaten VT by 40 and put an end to all this. They didn't. TCU won their big road game by 40. Boise won theirs by 3.
Well hey now, Casey, you are actually giving credit to a non-AQ team in Utah! Imagine that.
Why is Andy Dalton not receiving the same Heisman Watch love as Andrew Luck when their numbers are basically the same and the Frogs are still undefeated. Here are the numbers of both of them:Andy Dalton's stats through 10 games:Total yards: 2,660Total TD's: 24Total INT's: 5QB rating: 166.67Completion %: 67.5Currently tied with Peyton Manning for 3rd most wins in Division 1 history with 39 wins. Will tie David Greene for 2nd all time with 42 wins if he wins the next 2 regular season games and bowl game.Andrew Luck's stats through 9 games:Total yards: 2,583Total TD's: 25Total INT's: 6QB rating: 163.37Completion %: 67.8
Probably because Andy Dalton plays for TCU.
If Arkansas wins out do you see them going to the BCS sugar bowl?
Depends on what happens the SEC champ. Not if Auburn loses one and wins the SEC championship. Then Auburn is in the Sugar.
The WAC's football additions are a little, um, underwhelming to say the least. Does the WAC now become the Sun Belt West?
It's really not looking good for the WAC, Chris. Big hit losing its 3 best teams, and replacing them with 2 teams that don't play FBS right now.
MSU, Wisconsin or Ohio State. Who wins the Big Ten and gets the BCS (youll notice I left out Iowa because they lost to Wisconsin, face OSU and should have lost to Indiana).
I have Michigan State as the Big Ten champ, Stacy.
Andrea, do you feel that it may be harder to get up each week and pound inferior opponents than when you know you are playing a tougher foe?
Good question. It is quite possible. I will have to ask some of them for you.
For those that want to say Boise was better than TCU last year so it must still be true, I would say watch TCU this year and compare them to last year. They are a much better team. The same can be said about BS, but I don't think the Fiesta Bowl still applies. TCU's has a different defense this year and has a lot more options at offense.
I agree both are better, and am not using 2009 results in my judgements of this year.
Hi Andrea, how about some good ole' Service Academy talk on Veterans Day. Remember-if you love your Freedom-Thank a Vet. Seeing my Army Black Knights get it handed to them by Air Force was tough. Although it shows just how good that AFA team is. How long until Coach Ellerson gets us to that level. (Finally-here's hoping that we at least become Bowl Eligible this weekend)
Thanks for reminding us all on this Veteran's Day of what is truly important. I would like to thank all of the veterans who have served our country. You make me proud every day. As for Army, the Black Knights are getting closer. He had a lot to fix in that program when he took over. IT's about changing a mind-set when you are stuck in that kind of misery for so long. But I am not going to say it will happen overnight. Navy and Air Force are clearly better. It will take a lot more work, but they are taking steps now.
Thanks to all for joing me today! Join us Saturday for 2 live chats as well!!
