Hello sportnation. Looks like my chats will be on Tuesday's, normally anyway. Thanks for stopping by. "Um, the house was built in 1825. By General Custer".
I missed your musk Thorpe. Does James Harden stink?
Funny stuff. No, but he's been a disappointment to be sure.
How different will the Knicks' roster be today and at the end of the season?
Probably significantly different.
What is the upside of DeMarcus Cousins?
10 time all-star.
Is Rondo the most perplexing player in the league? There seems to be such a hard line between those that think he is top-5 and others that feel he isn't top 15 because he doesn't score like Westbrook, Rose, etc.
He's terrific in my book. Top 5 pg.
What are your thoughts on Wilson Chandler this year? Could his recent play inflate his value around the league enough to entice the Nuggets with Carmelo?
He could, yes. Most of us still have a heard time believing in him.
Right or Wrong? Pau Gasol is MVP so far.
What is generally in a scouting report for an individual player? Do they include tendencies, strategies to defend or attack? What else?
Weaknesses. Go to moves.
What's wrong with Rashard Lewis?
I don't know. But he's been awful and it's a problem.
David, long-suffering Raptors fan here. I'm wondering about your take on Bargnani. His scoring is up, yes, but his defence and rebounding are reprehensible. What do you think of him?
He's a nice off the bench scorer thrust into a role far beyond his game.
How does Hollinger rank the Heat over the Lakers in his latest power rankings? The Lakers have a better record, Offensive efficiency and defensive efficiency...Do you agree with Hollinger or is there some kind of bias?
Bias? John created the formula long before the season-what happens each night is just entered into the formula.
What do you think about Blake Griffin's bank shot? That is a hard shot to learn so early in his career.
I watched tape on him this morning. He's better/more versatile on offense than people realize.
How difficult is it to get rookies especialy the ones selected in the first round to change their mentality from being the go to guy on there college team to a role player in the NBA?
It's not that hard. What's hard is to get them to do the other things necessary to win.
Step Brothers. Nice. Whose start has impressed you most and why (Lakers, Hornets, HEAT, Celtics, Spurs)?
I'm going with the Spurs. 3 rooks in the rotation!!
Do you predict that McGee will ever "figure it out?" He's so frustrating...
No, I do not. Sorry Wiz fans. That does not mean that he won't be an effective player. I just don't see him as a starter.
What are your thoughts on Eric Bledose and the Clippers PG situation?
Bledsoe is the future, period. He needs to play and play.
Is it too early for you to admit that you have been wrong about Eric Gordon?
You mean wrong to think he was a great shooter, since he's 6 for 38 this season? I think he's a solid player, better than average.
from first 2 weeks...worst free agent signing or trade?
Darko by a kilometer.
can you check out monroe tonight. i value your judgement a great deal. he is not "fierce/beastly", but a big time competitor and super smart. rebounding really well, just get stronger he will be great, not good. guarantee you will be impressed.
Watched him today. He's ok. Like to see some blocked shots.
As NYK fans we are all biased, but from an outside, expert point of view, what do you see in Gallo and ARandolph's future? (regardless of where they play)
Randolph has a higher upside, but Gallo will probably be the better player. I remember getting hate mail for listing Randolph and Speights as my top 2 bust choices (in terms of likelihood). Feel good about my selections.
Talk about Favors. Nets fans don't want to trade him.
I can see why. He's someone I was definitely wrong about, because he was average to terrible in July and October.
Lots of people predicted Evan Turner would be a bust, but then the season started. His minutes are somewhat limited, and he dribbles too much, but he's a player. I'm especially impressed by his rebounding. What's your take?
He won't flame out like Randolph is doing now (I know-that can change). But will he be worthy of most #2's? Probably not. Will he be a stat stuffer and be an important player on a good team? Probably.
Do they Lakers look like a dominant team? Or, do you have concerns over their defense that cannot be alleviated simply by the return of Andrew Bynum? Land O'Lakers made a good point about teams scoring a great deal of points in the second half of blowout games. What's your take?
They are almost assured of a Finals appearance.
If you could add a team to the NBA, in which city would you put it?
Tampa Bay baby!!
Joakim Noah is more closer to: A dominant player or A Hustle Guy? He has been fantastic thus far!
Did you watch the game last night? Rose made some key buckets, clutch to be sure, but Noah was the best overall player on the court last night. Period. A GM who saw the game texted me one word to describe Noah's performance. "Unreal".
What do you think of Hollinger's formula for his rankings? He has Houston in the top 10 (1-5), Spurs are 13th (5-1), AND Lakers behind the 2-lose HEAT.
I think his formula gets much more accurate after a month or so. Spurs beat Rockets in San Antonio in OT. Rockets sat Yao and Kyle Lowry, lost Brooks at half (with 18 points already)and lost Martin in middle of 3rd (with 24 points) and played an undrafted rookie at pg the rest of the way. The teams from 6-20 are all pretty even at this point.
Where do you see Wes Johnson's game going? He seems to shoot well from outside and has some athletic ability I wasn't suspecting. Thanks
I hope that whe he is now is not what he'll be. Mostly a gunner, though I think he'll end up being a solid shooter. I'd like to see him drive and slash more. Taking more 3's than ft's always a concern for young players.
Do you think the Celtics will win the title, based upon their heartbreaking game 7 loss against the Lakers? Personally I think they'll take that loss as fuel for motivation.
I think all that stuff is made up. They are all plenty motivated. Do the Lakers look less motivated with back to back rings?
Is there one skill that you see as the one that is most frequently missing in young players?
Passing. And understanding the game.
Do you see anyone on the Knicks' roster being a legitimate 20 PPG scorer other than Amar'e? Maybe Gallo? Ill Will?
How sweet would it be if Cleveland played Miami in the first round of the playoffs?
Fantastic!!!!!!!! Must see tv.
So does this put you in the camp of not trading Noah for Melo?
I founded that camp.
John Wall's turnover problems: Growing pains or long term concerns?
I break this down a bit in my rookie report out tomorrow. Playing too fast-his legs faster than his mind right now.
If the Thunder are serious about winning in the next two years, they have to make a significant trade soon - right?
Not soon, necessarily. But yes, they need an adjustment.
David = hating on the Spurs, what was the score to the Lakers vs Rockets game again?
Hating on Spurs? I love them. Duncan is top 5 all time fave for me, and Manu is probably the player I've learned more from watching than any other guy.
I personally think the Spurs easy schedule is boosting the teams confidence. What do you think about the Spurs rookie rotation and the Rich Jefferson getting back to his old form?
I think right now they are the 2nd best team out west, going forward. My pick for #2 seed.
Since your prediction on LBJ was spot on, where doe Melo end up?
Taj Gibson has pretty really well in Boozers absence, so does that mean the Bulls will only slightly get better when Carlos gets back?
I thought Gibson was excellent last night. He's much better than I initially thought he would be. But Boozer adds another dimension to their attack, and if he'll defend, then they should get more than slightly better.
Is there anybody out there you see that could be the missing piece for the Thunder?
Two words-Marcin Gortat.
To your point about 'understanding the game' as a missing skill in many young players - how would you go about teaching that?
What's up Cosmo. You teach it step by step, every drill and routine has a teaching point.
Whats the problem with the rockets on paper they have a solid team but their record is bad? And what do you make of Jordan Hill and what do you see him doing down in Houston?
Yao has been subpar, but needs pt to get back into solid ground. Brooks had a poor attitude because he did not get an extension. Lowry was fat and upset he's not starting. But those will all work themselves out.
I'm shocked to see D'Antoni actually not only playing rookies for once, but starting two of them. I'm not really a fan of Timofey "Stone Hands" Mosgov, but how about that Landry Fields kid, huh? Steal of the draft?
Fields can really play. I'm a fan.
Minnesota looks TERRIBLE to start the season. Growing pains, or deeper problems? And what's up with Kevin Love, his body language is atrocious.
That team looks like they have already quit on their coach.
Glad to see you chatting again, David! Please talk Wolves. Are they talentless, too young, or playing the wrong system? And how do you think Beasley will play the next couple of years?
I don't like how the team is built. No athleticism inside. Brewer and Johnson are three's playing the 2. Darko has been simply abominable. Love is absolutely miserable. He's a great player stuck in a bad situation.
What are your thoughts on the Magic? Do you think they are a title contender or just a great team, but short of a title shot? What are your thoughts on Dwights offensive game improvement with Olajuwon? And also the development of Redick?
Yes, they are contenders, precisely because D12 is even better. I'm not ready to credit Hakeem-how long did he spend there? Lewis is a problem that has to be solved, though.
Is there any team out there that you think could really benefit from getting elton brand?
Darko by a "kilometer"? Welcome to continental Europe! How were your vacations?
do you think tyreke evans will make all star game?
Not likely this year, but he certainly could in the future.
Not to rain on your parade, but Noah was only dominent when Nene was off the floor. Nene blew by and outmuscled Jo several times. However, Jo was the difference with his blocks and boards in the fourth quarter, while Nene sat
Not his fault that Nene sat. And Nene is really good, of course he's going to score on JoNo some. But 15, 19, and 4 is 15, 19, and 4. Stellar numbers.
Thorpe, have you had a chance to see any of the Hornets games? What in particular has been the most suprising about them?
I saw them in person last week. Guys are doing a great job of getting to their spots and letting CP3 do his thing. He's right there for the title of "world's best player".
What's wrong with Blair this season? Shooting numbers have been strikingly poor...
I'm not sure. I know he spent the summer there working on it. I've noticed a lack of explosiveness around the rim. He needs to use the physical talents he has and not just try to get shots off.
Coming from a nba purist. (which means no bias opinions) Isn't Carmelo Anthony this best all around offensive player in the game? Post-up, Mid-Range, Off Dribble, 3pt, improved passing
He's right there, yes.
Thorpe, many heaters are questioning spo's decision to start arroyo instead of a shooter like jones or house. What are your thoughts on that?
I think "Spo knows best". He's working on figuring out the best decisions for the long haul.
NOLA's Jason Smith looks good so far. What does the Thorpe magic 8 ball predict for his future?
Lots of pick and pops with Paul.
Thinking of Darko and Thabeet, looking back it is amazing how bad #2 overall picks have turned out. Seems like a spot you would like to avoid.
Avoiding tall stiffs a good idea at any spot.
What do you think of the Kings so far this season? Offense seems to be running great but defense seems to be worst in the league.
They'd play better d if they just got rid of that Kevin Martin kid. Oh.
There are some rumors that the Suns will consider trading Nash. is that just hype?
I think it's entirely possible if they are struggling in January.
J.A adande had made a fantasy trade idea this summer following the lakers title win and Bynums injuries saying the lakers should move him and try and get top value for him and acquire cp3 but wouldn't it make more sense to try and get Melo who has talked about playing with kobe during the olympics?
What do you think of Jrue Holiday's hot start in his sophomore season?
He's very very good. And he's younger than John Wall.
The Kings have been awful...Even worse considering strength of schedule.
I disagree. 3 and 3 works for me. They are still young and developing. Dalembert should help shore up their d.
what are your thoughts about Gary Neal..he is kinda coming out of no where!!!!
I think Miami should hire the Spurs scouting department. They could use a Europro even more than SA. He's been a blessing as a shooter, just like in July.
Can two guys with the same alpha mentality win it all (Wade/LBJ)? Does one have to adjust his mindset? Can't really take turns taking big shots... Can they?
It's a myth. Of course they can play together in crunch time. Defenses dictate what the best play action will be. Remember the Lakers in the 80's? Magic, Byron, James, and Cap all made huge shots and always wanted the ball late.
As a Bulls fan, I am insane for preferring Noah over every center in the league, including Dwight Howard? The dude has FIRE, and is all about winning. Plus, his ballhandling has dramatically improved over the summer.
I'm JoNo's biggest fan, but D12 is better. But after him???
Do you expect Tiaggo Splitter to eventually start for the Spurs?
I do. I mention this in the upcoming rook report.
Rashard is struggling. Let's say, just for kicks and giggles, that Otis wants to move him...can you think of ANY team that would take his contract?
Well, if Minny took him, wouldn't that be something?
You've gone the whole chat and not answered a Derrick Rose question, I'm dissapointed. How do you like Derrick's defense this year?
This is the first Ive been asked. I see progress there, for sure. I love how he can take his man almost every time, but no one thinks he's a selfish player. He's my favorite kind of star-reluctant to gain attention and all about the team.
Doesn't Ryan Anderson deserve to be in the lineup? Why is his PT so sporadic??
Yes, for sure, and I do not know.
mr. thorpe i c a celtics vs lakers final again this year ? do u c it differently ?
2 early 2 tell.
As of this point, Chris Paul is the MVP. Pay attention Thorpe. CP and his team have played better teams than the Lakers have.
I meant that Pau is in the running. CP3 of course is right there.
Hey David have you been to the New Amway Center yet? Ticket prices have gone up this year and was wondering if it's worth going to a game?
I have, and it was spectacular.
James Worthy learned how to be a team player under Coach Smith at UNC. When did Lebron ever learn how to be a team player? It's been all about him since he was in HS.
Marc, your bitterness clouds your judgement.
Now that Ron-Ron has invented Ron Artest Happy, who is the biggest locker room cancer in the league? The ones I think of immediately are Kenyon Martin, J.R. Smith, Baron Davis, Rodney Stuckey, and Eddy Curry, but I'm sure I'm missing more than a few. Who's the worst?
From everyone I've spoken to, CDR is no picnic.
Coaching 8 year olds this season. What are some points of emphasis I need to teach? Also, favorite restaurant in Tampa metro (parents live there)?
Teach them how to pass and catch. Basic rules are important too. Sideberns is fab, so is BT's.
kobes triple double last week proved he can still play, how many players do u have above him as far as top players? thanks for the Facebook add
He's a top 6 guy over the course of the season. Maybe top 3 in any one game. Your welcome!! I'm at David B. Thorpe for you facebookers, and @coachthorpe on twitter.
Would the Timberwolves make the playoffs this year if they had taken Curry (instead of Flynn) and Cousins instead of Johnson??
No, but they would have been wise to do so.
I love Thibodeau, but he needs to calm down on the sidelines. Thibs is screaming instructions at his players during every play. How long until the team gets tired of such micromanagement?
Depends on if they are winning!!
FB friend here. Yo D-Thorpinator, what is it that makes these Argentine players so unselfish and team-oriented? Ginobili is 33 yet putting up monster numbers and he's come off the bench for years. Scola is a beast, yet never complained all these years when he's been an afterthought on offense. Let's face it. Our American players would've bitched, whined, and moaned. Is there something wrong with our culture?
You are only partly right. SOME Americans would have whined. Many would have been pro's just like the Argentines.
Time's up. Thanks everyone for lots of questions. Have a great week!
