Thank goodness for this chat. Got me out from under a mountain of leaves. So, what's on your mind. RPM? Johnson's pit crew swap? Who will win Dancing with the Stars? We can handle it all here or you can swap me out for another crew. Fire away.
What will be the penalties for Jeff Gordon shoving Jeff Burton & Kyle Busch Obsene Gesture with an Official?
Kyle received a $25,000 fine. Hope it doesn't quiet him down like Denny Hamlin's fine for tweeting on questionable debris cautions. Gordon should be in the clear.
Do you think that Kyle Busch will be Suspended from NASCAR for Obsene Gesture at the Officials during the AAA Texas 500?
Nope. NASCAR fined him 25K. If you ask me the two-lap penalty was enough. They wouldn't have fined him for flipping off a fellow competitor.
does dover have lights? that would be cool if it did.
Nope, but I agree. Mentioned that as I walked out the last race there.
who you got at pheoniex this weekend. i got jamie mac
I'm going with Jeff Gordon's pit crew and Chad Knaus' driver.
Who do you think will win the Wypall 200 & the Kobolt Tools 500 at Phoenix?
Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon's pit crew.
Glad to see Jeff Gordon show some fire and passion for once. He started the season aggressive through spring Richmond and then it just seemed the weekly grind wore him out and his performance dropped
He wasn't worn out. He just backed off because he knew he needed friends in the Chase. Can't win a title if everybody is wrecking you. Of course, he's getting that anyway. But there is plenty of fire in him.
David, if RPM could ever get solid ownership with their relationship with Roush and Ford I think they could have a really solid team and maybe flourish. What are the chances Petty and that investment group gets control?
My guess is they'll find a way to survive. Too many people are working to make it happen, and Roush needs RPM for his engine and chassis rental income. And you are right, they have shown flashes of being pretty good.
Do you think the fine on kyle busch was a light or a heavy penalty for his actions this past sunday?
I thought the two-lap penalty was enough. Somebody gets flipped off every race. He just happened to do it to an official.
Well David - It is crunch time for the 48 team. Several people have made the comparision to 2005 when they were 38 behind smoke, did not win, and the team came almost came apart. I think it is totally different. After winning 4 in a row they will not have the same issues. I am expecting a max points day at Phoenix. My question relates to HMS as a whole. Across the board their pit teams are maybe third best right now as an organization. Will there be wholesale changes to their pit team program in the off season?
Agree on maximum points day for JJ. As for HMS, they realize there is a problem with depth on their pit crews and are addressing that. I'm sure you'll see a lot of changes between now and next year.
Hi Newt, Great story on Coach Gibbs and JGR. Question: what parallels do you see between Tony Stewart and Rowdy at JGR?
Both wear their feelings on their sleeves and do stupid things from time to time. Both also are great drivers. The difference is Stewart found out early how to get the consistency it takes to win a title. Kyle's still searching.
How did you like the fight between Burton & Gordon. It looked like Rock'em Sock'em robots!
Love it almost as much as that one between the horse jockeys earlier in the weekend.
What's your take on the burton/gordon fight
Best part was having to ride together in the ambulance. Gordon wasn't happy about that. Good to see emotion, though.
Also A salute to all the vetrens out there! You do so much. You are heros.
T. Blount buys burtons weak excuse that he didnt mean to wreck 24 what a joke guess he thinks OJ isnt guilty either, that was a blatant punt by the "mayor"/ has been/never was
All I know is Gordon says he's been around long enough to know when something is intentional and he believed that was intentional. Burton is too good to make a mistake like that. I'm siding with he did it on purpose.
Hi, Mr. Newton I know how the rest of the season will Denny will win the cup and Jeff Gordon will win the last two races!!!!!!!!! What do you think? Thanks for you time as alway (I am hopeing the year will end up like that)
I'm sticking with JJ to win the title and Jeff Gordon's former pit crew to win a race.
Would a manufacture throw money at start and park teams if the rival crashes out in the next 2 races? Basically, if Jimmie crashes, does Toyota throw money at it's start and parkers to make if harder for Jimmie to gain positions? (Or Chevy in a scenerio with Denny Hamlin crashing).
Would be too obvious if a car that parks after 30 laps all of the sudden runs a whole race.
Hi Mr. Newton, wasn't another Gibbs driver, Tony Stewart, fined by NASCAR for physically attacking a photographer at Indy back in the day?
Actually it was the sponsor, Home Depot, that fined Stewart $50K. Good memory you have.
who do u have for Sunday? where do u think the old man will finish? do u think he can pull the upset. he hasnt finished lower than 14th since louden.
Again, I have Jeff Gordon's pit crew. As for the old man, which one do you mean? There are several now.
RPM is a big team of small failures. Yates, HOF, Petty, Evernham, Boston Ventures, Gillette..... Whoever ends up owning it in 2011 needs to just fire everyone and rehire people, just start it over!
Not as easy as to fire everyone. Petty needs to get controlling interest from Gillett first. Then he can start making changes if he thinks they are needed.
Hi David, as a journalist do you think that Tony Stewart assulting a media member at Indy back in the day was a more serious offense than Rowdy flipping off a NASCAR official?
I do. Think his sponsor did too judging by the fine.
If RPM race cars are sitting in trucks at Texas Speedway how can they hope to run a Phoenix on Friday?
They are scheduled to leave Texas on schedule at 945 am on Thursday I am told. It's not that far of a drive.
Hi David, Liked your story on Joe Gibbs Racing today. Didn't Tony Stewart used to act just like Kyle Busch does today? How come people don't treat Rowdy the way they did Stewart?
Tony did misbehave a bit, but the fans seemed to like that. Busch hasn't quite warmed up to the fans, but you can see some moving over to his side. Is he passionate? Heck yeah. Does it make him do stupid things? Heck yeah. We all do from time to time.
QUESTION TO DAVID NEWTON AT 2.20 PM HI DAVID WH YOU DO HAVE FOR PHOENIX SUNDAY
Jeff Gordon's pit crew for the 1,024th time.
Wads the latest with the 77 for next YEAR
Still looking. Needs sponsor to drive in whatever series it is.
Kyle Busch penalty.....appropriate, too harsh or he got off easy?
I guess appropriate. I would have been OK with the two-lap penalty he received.
David, first how is your weight loss plan doing? Second, is it just me or is RPM situation more dire than previously thought?
Maintaining since I lost 22 pounds. Added a few pleasures back to the plan. As for RPM, not sure you can get much dire.
David - Have the RPM trucks left yet? That is a long drive. Dallas to Phoenix is as far as Charlotte to Dallas
Leaving Thursday at 945 am I am told. Only 15 hours. Be there for the garage to open Friday.
David, does Carl need a crew chief change? It seems that the chemistry is fading. They haven't won in two years and good adjustments are not being made on the cars.
Good question. He made a change a few years ago and things went South. He and Osborne really like each other, but it's something to think about.
Do you think Nascar will change the format of the Chase after this season?
I hope not, but they are still pondering it. I hope the way this one is working out will make the changes minor if any.
how is it fair for the 46 team to get a 50 point penalty for intentionally putting weight pellets in the frame of the car but clint bowyers team gets 150 point penalty for having the fender .060 out of tolerance. seems to me that the weight pellets should bring on a more serious penalty.
Excellent point. No denying which one was intentional.
Did you see Gordon acknowlege the fans on the way to fighting with burton. You could see him wave but I bet he also said watch this.
Sure he was waving. Maybe he was just stretching his punching arm.
Suppose Jamie Mac or JP or Newman or Martin or Kasey make the 2010 chase, then what current chasers fall out?
Can't see many of the current guys falling off that much. Could be a pivotal year for Burton.
If RPM doesnt run next year what options do think AJ Allmendinger will have?
Depends if Best Buy sticks with him. Sure a few teams might expand with a sponsor.
When Jeff Gordons crew is good its really good, but I can remember a few stops this year that they dropped lug nuts and really hurt his chances.
Yeah, but you could do that with any team out there.
I don't understand the point of Nascar fining Kyle Busch. They held him for two laps and he was already down a lap. What's the point?
Guess they felt insulting an official deserved more than insulting a fellow driver.
Will Mr. H be making some changes with the #88 team so that I might be able to show myself again? Thanks Mr. Newton, appreciate it.
Hard to imagine he won't. It's pretty obvious something has to happen.
with the change on the front of the cup cars will this allow for more downforce? it also makes the cars look way cooler in my opinion!
Won't change handling that much, but they will look cooler.
Is the jayski report true that the RPM haulers sit empty in Texas, waiting for the cars to be released from the Roush-Fenway hauler? That's not good for us Sadler fans...
That's what's being said. I was told they will leave at 945 am on Thursday, but things change.
Do you see Denny as sort of the Bobby Labonte at JGR while Rowdy is more of the Tony Stewart character?
Denny is a better driver and much more outspoken than Labonte. Busch and Stewart are characters, but in different ways.
Who's chase has fallen apart the most in your opinion?
I'll go with Kyle Busch. Really expected him to make a run.
in all of your years covering nascar can you recall a top contending team completely droping there pit crew?
I can't remember it ever happening during a race. One or two guys, yes, but not the whole team. Harvick and Burton swapped a few weeks ago but that was in the middle of the week. This was pretty dramatic.
Will the RPM cars be at Phoenix? Heard their haulers are still in Texas.
I'm told they will be there, but as I said earlier things change minute to minute in this situation.
Hey David, do you have any unseen footage from inside the ambulance that gave Gordon and Burton a ride to the care center?
Speaking of Jamie Mac, why is EGR so inconsistent? Is it the drivers? The cars? The crew chief? Everyone keeps saying how good their engines are so it is quite confusing. What are your thioughts?
A little bit of everything. Mechanical issues have been a factor a few times. Wrecks not of the EGR drivers' doing has caused bad finishes. Take away those things and at least Jamie would have been in the Chase.
with the changes on the cup car are they getting more travel on the front shocks?
They are getting more travel this year but I can't say exactly what changes led to that.
David, I am a UPS #6 fan and think ever since Drew has been on the top of the pit box. Do you think he will stick around and the 6 will be back to the way the were in 2008 next year?
Hard to say on that one. Ragan has shown no signs of getting out of this funk. If he weren't tied to UPS and UPS wasn't so valuable to Roush he'd probably be out of a ride now.
Will Ambrose be in Cup or V8 Supercars next year?
Depends on what happens to RPM don't you think? As long as that organization survives he has a ride in the 9.
Who is your pick for all three series at PIR?
Jeff Gordon's pit crew, Kyle Busch and Aric Almirola.
whos the champion pit crew if the 48 wins it with the 24's guys?
Both teams. JJ wouldn't be where he is without the crew he had and the 24 have to get credit for taking him through the final two races.
What options do you think AJ Allmendinger would have if RPM didnt field cars next year? Penske, Waltrip or Gibbs running another car for him a possibility?
I like your first two picks most.
Do you think the "mental fatigue" that Knaus cited with the 24-48 crew change can also affect drivers like Burton, Gordon, Stewart, Martin etc. who have been around forever?
Certainly, but I haven't seen any signs of that with any of those drivers.
So Kyle flipping off an official is more fine worthy then Jeff and Jeff fighting? Wouldn't both actions fall under the catch-all "action detrimental ...". Or is it what gives them (Nascar) more bang for their buck?
If Kyle had flipped off another driver he probably wouldn't have been fine. This has to do with lack of respect for officials that NASCAR apparently won't tolerate.
Hello Mr. Newton. Think Mr. H. needs to clean up shop with the 88 like Mr. Jerry Jones says he will do with the Cowboys?
Can't argue that. But if Lance and Junior are getting along and believe they are ready to turn the corner splitting them up could set the team further back. It takes a while to build continuity.
So, if you bought a NASCAR team, who would you hire to drive?
David, I was listening to Dale JR and Lance McGrew on hotpass during Sunday's race in Texas and to me it seemed as neither one of those guys was very upset as to how the car was performing. Are they just buying their time for the rest of the year knowing that they are not going to be paired together in 2011? I know what HMS has been saying about a crew cheif swap for the 88 but I'm not buying it.
Think they both are ready for the season to be over, but can't get into their minds and predict what they're thinking.
If there hadn't been an in car camera broadcasting Kyle's salute, at the exact moment of said indiscretion, do you think Kyle still would have been penalized?
If NASCAR saw him flip off an official I believe he would have been penalized.
What's up with the Kyle probation? The season ends in Nov. Why doesn't it care over until next year? Seems kinda dumb to have end Dec 31.
Seems kind of dumb to have it go any length of time to me. Hasn't he paid enough?
Would there have been a fine for Kyle if the cameras did not catch him flipping the official off? Seems the cameras cause more fines then anything else.
The cameras don't cause it. The drivers know the camera is on them.
Just out of curiosity, is Denny Hamlin popular? And would it be good for him the win the championship for Nascar as a whole?
Interesting question. Among the two vying to end JJ's run I believe Harvick taking the title would be best for the sport. He's more of the every man's man. Hamlin is trying to be like JJ in some ways.
Hi David, Thanks for the story today on Coach Gibbs and the Petty angle. Do you think 1 of the reason JGR is successful and Petty is having trouble is because Richard didn't bring his son into the business like Coach did with JD?
Petty did try to bring Kyle in. It just didn't work out the way either wanted.
With the Roush cars being strong at Texas, do you think that they will be competitive here at a flat one mile track or they just going to be competitive at homestead?
Seems the JGR and Hendrick cars are stronger at Phoenix, but Roush cars excel at Homestead.
Did you mean to say earlier that you actually walked out of the race at Dover before it was over? You didn't stay until the end?
Didn't mean to say that at all. Was just thinking lights would be cool at the track as I was leaving to go home.
Calvin Borel would whoop both Burton and Gordon. Not even a contest.
Funny. Let's put together a bout.
Would the potential NFL lockout of 2011 have a positive or minimal effect on NASCAR?
If there's a lockout it would have to be a boost for NASCAR.
Denny's record isn't exactly spectacular at Phoenix, is it? I mean, he's had some good runs, but isn't it more than plausible that Jimmie goes out and wins the race while Denny has just an okay day and the 33 point lead Jimmie is dealing with now evaporates?
It's not bad. It's just not nearly as good as JJ's. This is one where Hamlin needs to have a top 5 cause you know JJ will.
Which non chaser should we keep an eye on this weekend?
Dale Jr. Why not?
so since we have a new point leader thing that denny hamlin has the pressure now than jj.
I would say so. JJ has four titles and nothing to lose. Denny hasn't proven he can win the title yet.
Hi David, in your memory has Dale Jr. ever shown the kind of emotion on the race track that Kyle, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards have shown this season? Is it that Dale jr doesn't have the short fuse of those guys?
Don't recall him taking a swipe at somebody, but he's shown plenty of emotion. And just because you lose control doesn't mean you're more passionate than one that doesn't.
Any word on where Sam Hornish Jr or Scott Speed will end up racing?
Not a word.
When a team, like RPM, get it cars and engines from another team, like Roush, what adjusting can they do for better performance, and have those cars been to the wind tunnel?Or, are they stuck with what they get?
Same adjustments that Roush or any other team does. Not sure about the wind tunnel, but it's to Roush's benefit to have RPM cars run well to get information from eight cars instead of 4, at least for this year.
hey, david do you thing that swamping pit crew's for the final 2 races thing that will get jj point lead back or do you thing denny will put more pressure on jj by pitting right beside again at phoenix and maybe at homstead.
No guarantees the spot ahead of JJ will be available, but I do believe the swap will turn into a positive. The 48 always seems to handle adversity well.
With the season winding down, what moment has stood out for you this season?
The double-file restarts and the overall intensity that we've seen. The racing never has been better.
David, got a turf management test to study for but enjoy this chat too much. Who owns RPM next yr? Petty/investment group or Gillets?
Don't want to take you away from school, but glad you're on board. As for RPM if Petty doesn't find investors then the bank may own the team. And that won't be good. Now hit the books.
Why are you playing your stupid games with Marybeth's question? "Jeff Gordon's pit crew"... don't be evasive... just come right out and say you you think is going to win. And you don't know what she means by the old man? Its Mark Martin, genius... who else? Are you actually a reporter, or just a windbag?
Funny. It's pretty obvious that Jeff Gordon's pit crew is Johnson's team. And since Martin is 51 and I am 51, and I don't consider myself old, then I needed further explanation.
Do you think godaddy.com & Jr Motorsports will announced Danica 2011 nationwide series schedule this weekend at Phoenix?
She does have something downtown with Martin on Thursday, but haven't heard it is to announce rest of the schedule. Believe they put it out at Homestead last year.
David - It is 1027 miles from Charlotte to Dallas. It is 1065 miles from Dallas to Phoenix. They better get rolling soon
will hamlin stay away from hornish for the next two weeks?
Will you quit being evasive and say who you actually think is going to win?!? "Jeff Gordon's pit crew"... that's just STUPID!
Gee, sensitive people. Didn't want to make it too easy for you. Johnson is that helps.
So, is one goal of the 11 team, to qualify in front of the 48 team the next two weeks, so they have a chance of getting the pit box directly in front of the 48 team? :-)
Actually, the 11 needs to pick after the 48 to get the stall ahead. They can't know where the 48 is going to pit otherwise.
Hey Newt, Do you see RPM selling their points to teams to get some cash to run next year? RCR is adding a 4th car...
Asked them that at Texas. They will look closer at that after the season.
Will I ever be able to show myself again?!
Up to you.
I read something about Brad Keselowski saying that if the #77 Cup car folds, he would be willing to hire the crew for his Brad Keselowski Racing entry to run a full Truck season with Parker Kligerman. I thought that was pretty cool of him.
Didn't hear that, but that's pretty cool if true.
I workout and have 6 pack abs. Are drivers , generally, in good shape? Is it a requirement to be a good driver? GUESS WHO?? Biffle. Smile.
The best ones are in excellent shape. Mark Martin has abs to envy and he's 51.
That's all for me today. Back to raking leaves and waiting for the RPM haulers to leave Texas. See you at the track this weekend.
