Chat with Tim MacMahon

Tim MacMahon
  (3:59 PM)

Welcome to the first Cowboys chat of the Jason Garrett era. It's up tempo around Valley Ranch all of the sudden, so let's get straight to the questions.

Matt (Plano, TX)

How will Jason Garrett do in the next upcoming weeks? Is he a permanent replacement for Wade?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:01 PM)

Jerry Jones wants Jason Garrett to succeed. Jerry would love for the Cowboys to turn around the season and put him in a position where he can sell Garrett as the head coach. I'm skeptical that will happen. Wade Phillips was far from the only problem here. There are still several underachieving players in that locker room who shy away from accountability. However, Garrett's presence and demeanor has been impressive during his brief time as the head coach.

Rick Smith (Dallas, TX)

Are the Cowboys going to start playing young guys like: Sam Young, Barry Church, and Sean Lee or is Garrett and staff worried about keeping this job long term?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:03 PM)

Excellent question. Time will tell. Garrett told us that he'd inform us if and when there were any changes to the starting lineup. None yet. That doesn't necessarily mean that the young players won't get more playing time.

Barrett S. (Dallas)

Please tell me Tashard Choice will finally get his chance these final 8 games....

Tim MacMahon
  (4:04 PM)

I wouldn't hold your breath for a lot of Tashard Choice playing time. Jason Garrett is the guy who kept Choice on the bench the last several games. Why would that change after Garrett gets promoted?

Jake (Iowa)

Tim, do you think all of the players will get a clean slate because of the new head coach? And if so, how long?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:04 PM)

They better not get a clean slate. Garrett talks a lot of "going forward," but this is the same bunch of players that carries the majority of the responsibility for a 1-7 record. You don't just wipe the slate clean midway through what might be the most disappointing season in NFL history.

Fahad (Coppell)

Tim, based on what you've been seeing this week at Valley Ranch with the preparation and JG as head coach, is there any hope for the Cowboys at least making the Giants game competitive?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:05 PM)

I've got to see a lot more than one practice in full pads to believe that. The Giants are probably the best team in the NFC. The Cowboys have been the worst team in the NFL lately. It's delusional to think that gap will be closed just because the Cowboys have a good week of practice.

John (New Jersey)

Tim - many are assuming that Cowher and Gruden will WANT to come here. If the choices are Fox, Garrett or Harbaugh, which do you think Jerry would pick and why? My pick is for Harbaugh - strong personality, pro background, coaching family, good offensive mind.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:08 PM)

I think Jerry would pick either John Fox or Jason Garrett due to his relationships with them. But Garrett won't have a shot if the Cowboys don't finish strong this season. Jim Harbaugh is a very interesting candidate, but I'd just be speculating to guess about how interested the Cowboys would be in him. The fact that his brother, John, has done a great job in Baltimore certainly doesn't hurt Harbaugh's cause.

Johnny Boy (Fantasyland)

So Tim, what is your take on Dez Bryant for the rest of the year?Does he start? If so, that NYG D looks awfully tough against Kitna this week? I mean, this could get really bad for the Dallas O?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:10 PM)

I don't know if Dez Bryant starts this season, but his development will continue to be a major priority. He's been featured in the game plans for weeks and that trend will continue. However, it doesn't matter what the Cowboys want to do in the passing game if they can't protect Kitna, and you're right to be very concerned about their ability to do that against the Giants.

Josh (D Town)

Tim, there has been a considerable regression in the level of play with many of the Cowboys; particularly Demarcus Ware. Do you think the neck injuries he suffered last year he impacted his aggresiveness this year?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:13 PM)

Josh, that's an interesting question. Ware has put up impressive numbers, but he hasn't been a dominant force this season. I don't think the neck injury has anything to do with that. After all, he did have two sacks and forced fumbles a week after being taken off the field on a stretcher.

Dustin (NC)

Tim, going to reach here a little bit, but is this defense one saftey and a great DC away from being really good? This is the same defense that was a borderline dominate defense at the end of last year.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:14 PM)

Mike Jenkins and Anthony Spencer need to get back to being the rising stars they were in the last half of the 2009 season. Their drop-offs have been alarming, especially for young players. I think you'll see two new safeties next season. Ball and Sensabaugh don't make any plays and give up too many.

Amanda (Chicago)

Nobody cares about the Cowboys... the rest of the country outside of Texas is loving this. You're just as annoying as the Yankees.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:14 PM)

Then why log onto the Cowboys chat?

Tony Romo (Trainers Room)

I'll be 31 next year and I aint getting any younger. how long's my window of oppurtunity to win a championship here?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:15 PM)

There are a lot of examples of quarterbacks who played at a high level well into their mid- to late 30s. Romo has at least three or four prime years remaining.

Lex (Calgary, AB)

Hello Tim, Now that Wade is gone do you really think this team changes or will the team mail it in for the rest of the year?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:17 PM)

I'm in believe-it-when-I-see-it mode with the Cowboys. I'm as stunend as everybody else to see them go 1-7. My 11-5 preseason prediction was obviously way off the mark. It's going to take a heck of a lot more than firing the head coach to get me back on the bandwagon.

Buckley (SF)

Is everybody down on Jerry Jones right now? He goes to the press one day and says Phillips is safe ALL year, then the next day fires him without even wishing him a hearty good luck and congratulations. Real classy, JK, real classy. Do officials just lie to the press these days? Again, real classy.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:18 PM)

Jerry was asked a very direct question on live radio. His one-word answer -- "Yes" -- indicated a lack of confidence. This is one of the most talkative men in the world. For him to give a one-word answer is a telling sign. He wanted it to be true, but he clearly wasn't confident. How could he not reverse field after 45-7?

Brian M. (College Station)

I've heard there arent that many great offensive lineman in the upcoming draft, so do you think the cowboys will target a safety/corner with their first round pick and then look at offensive linemen in the middle rounds?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:19 PM)

That's a possibility, but they could also try to trade down to the area where drafting an OL makes sense and stockpile some picks in the process. That'd be my Plan A.

Brian M. (College Station)

Seems like the Cowboys man to man coverage is horrible, either bc the safeties don't help or the corners just get beat. do you think next year the Cowboys change up their scheme?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:20 PM)

The scheme worked well last year. How about the corners and safeties cover better?

Terrell (Salisbury, MD)

Garrett is showing a more business like approach, that to me is good. Garrett is still calling the plays, that to me is still bad. Is there anyone who can help him with the play calling on staff?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:23 PM)

Garrett made it clear that he'll still handle all of the play-calling. He said he won't rely on assistants any more than he has in the past, although there would be some "logistical" changes. He emphasized that he has always relied on the other offensive coaches a lot, too.

K (Dallas, TX)

T-Mac - Who do you think will not be wearing the Cowboys uniform next year.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:24 PM)

I'm only chatting for a few more minutes. Not enough time to go through all the potential changes. There will be many new faces at Valley Ranch next year.

Todd(PA) [via mobile]

That Jenkins play says it all n I will already lose respect for Garrett starts him Sunday that's was a joke display n he seemed ok with it n with all smiles. Some of the many things wrong with this team in my opinion if Jenkins starts Sunday do you already lose respect for Garrett? I know I will..

Tim MacMahon
  (4:26 PM)

Who do your replace Jenkins with? Orlando Scandrick has struggled, too. But that should be the last time Jenkins quits on a play. Here is what Jenkins had to say about it: "I gave up on a play. I came back and i made a couple of more tackle. I'm a good player. I try not get caught up in all that. If i do, I would go crazy."

Steve (Erie, PA)

Do think Wade Phillips will land a defensive coordinator job next season?

Tim MacMahon
  (4:27 PM)

Yes. He has a three-plus-decade resume that is impressive. He'll never be a head coach again, but he should get a job as a defensive coordinator.

Tim MacMahon
  (4:27 PM)

Gotta run now. Will be popping on with Galloway and Co. on ESPN 103.3 in a few minutes, so tune in for more Cowboys talk.
