Fantasy Injuries w/Stephania Bell

Stephania Bell
  (3:08 PM)

Hello Sports Nation:Sorry for the delay - logging on in a remote location and s-l-o-w to get going...but here we are. Let's get to your questions. Still early in the week but there is already some news seeping out...

Rob (Boston)

Any news on Addai's status this week?

Stephania Bell
  (3:10 PM)

Rob: Caldwell will only say that both Addai and Mike Hart are day-to-day...which is what they were last week...which means we have to painfully wait it out. Don't think they're trying to be tricky. Literally I think it depends on how they progress from one day to the next. neither practiced at all last week so if they do return to practice, that's already encouraging.

Steve (SC)

How serious is Roddy White's knee injury? Should I consider starting Randy Moss over him? Thanks!

Stephania Bell
  (3:12 PM)

Steve: Both White and his coach Mike Smith say he expects to play Thursday night. Note the game is EARLY (first Thurs night game of the year) so good to get a heads up early. I would start White if looks healthy. Moss just arriving in TN.

mike (texas)

hi stephania, any word on h.nicks ankle? you do a great job, thanks.

Stephania Bell
  (3:15 PM)

Mike: Why thank you...but then I don't have much to offer you in the way of news here. What I can say is those close to the Giants say Nicks could have played on after rolling his ankle, but the Giants were doing so well, he really didn't need to. He has repeatedly played after these recurrent sprains/tweaks, so as of now, not esp worried.

alan (austin texas)

How does Stafford look ? Fitzpatrick is there in our league to be picked up if Stafford is hurt bad.

Stephania Bell
  (3:17 PM)

Alan: First of all, get a replacement for Stafford no matter what b/c it certainly appears he is out in the immediate sense, if not for an extended period - or even the remainder of the year. One report out of Detroit saying he suffered a Grade III separation to his throwing shoulder (which would be a complete separation - he previously had a Grade II). Team not officially confirming at this point and imagine Stafford will consult with Dr. Andrews, but if true, he won't be back anytime soon.

Mike (NJ)

Any status on Ryan Torain? I heard he went "full speed" during practice yesterday. Worth a start over Blount?

Stephania Bell
  (3:18 PM)

Mike: yes, word from the Washington Post is that he ran full speed Monday, pretty good indicator that hamstring is doing better. If he cont well all week, I'd feel pretty comfortable with his return. That said, they play Monday night I believe, so make sure you have insurance ready.

Jason (DC)

Gamble with Collie this week or play it safe with D. Mason on Thursday?

Stephania Bell
  (3:21 PM)

Jason: Too soon to know if Collie will play and many expect that he won't. He had a concussion and will need to feel fully recovered from any symptoms in addition to passing all tests required to return to play. I would expect he sits out this week. I take Mason on Thurs.

Bennyc407 (Orlando,FL)

Do you think i should pickup Shaun Hill ?

Stephania Bell
  (3:22 PM)

If you have Stafford, then prob a good idea although he's not a lock to play this week. Healing forearm fracture - it's his non-throwing arm but they will need to be comfortable with that arm taking contact. Might not be cleared for Wk 10 but expect he comes in handy for other weeks afterward if Stafford is done.

dave (home)

hi stephania,do you expect gates to be near 100 pct after the bye?

Stephania Bell
  (3:24 PM)

Dave: Nope. BUT...doesn't necessarily mean I rule him out to play. As I've been saying all along, this is a very, very painful injury. Tough to run on, usually for a few weeks. But this guy is unusual. It ultimately comes down to how well he can function in the presence of pain (and how much pain there is exactly). I would certainly prepare for the possibility that it might take him longer.

Mark (Denver)

Anything new with Kenny Britt's timetable? Seems that it will be longer than expected and that they will not rush him back with Moss on board. Thanks!

Stephania Bell
  (3:26 PM)

Mark: Nothing new, but then again, the clues they gave us at the outset as to how serious the injury appeared suggest we won't hear anything for some time. He'll rest for a while, rehab. gradually get back to light jogging (at which point we might get an update about that) - but it could be closer to 3-4 weeks before we hear much of anything. Moss was brought in for a reason - they don't expect Britt back anytime soon.

Matt (TX)

What's wrong with Roddy White, is it a deep bruise or possible something more? Thanks.

Stephania Bell
  (3:27 PM)

Matt: All we got was a knee bruise when his knee hit the turf, so that's what we're going with.

Danny (LA)

What's the deal with Ryan Mathews? I heard he re-aggrivated his ankle injury. Should he be better after the bye? Is it bad enough to keep him out a few weeks?

Stephania Bell
  (3:29 PM)

Danny: yes, the word is aggravation of that ankle sprain that's been nagging at him since it happened. Earlier in the week last week he made the mistake of saying he finally felt healthy...an apparent jinx. He hurt it enough that he could not return to the game and we certainly won't hear much during the bye week. Judging from how slow it was to come back the first time, you have to imagine he won't be seeing full duty off the bat, even if he is back...

Bob (Bay Area)

Hi Stephania, what is the news on Sidney Rice? Should he be ready to play in the next few weeks?thanks

Stephania Bell
  (3:31 PM)

Bob: Rice is certainly amping up the practice activity. Sounds as if the rehab element (as in away from the practice field, in the training room) is passed; now it's getting back to game shape, increasing endurance/strength, etc. Childress has hinted that he COULD play in Wk 10 although I'd be surprised (unless he does quite a bit more this week) and it may depend on what weather conditions in Chicago are. But Childress also suggested that they're likely to bring him back on a limited snap count initially so might be worth having on your bench, but waiting until his first start to see how they use him.

Alisa (PA)

Any word on Malcom Floyd's progress? Also, any thoughts on disclosing a list of all your fantasy players so we know who is susceptible to the curse of stephania bell?

Stephania Bell
  (3:34 PM)

Alisa: Gave all my fantasy players on today's podcast...better go listen!!! Although it's worth pointing out there are plenty of injuries that happen to folks not on my team (Stafford for instance)...All kidding aside, it sounds as if the Chargers do hope that he can be available after the bye. Hamstrings are never on a precise timeline so much will depend on how he does daily going forward, but it's the first encouraging news I've heard associated with his name so far..

Tom (Anaheim)

Hello Stephania. Any word on Schaub's "gut"? I love his Jax matchup but lineups lock on Thursday and Big Ben is waiting on the sidelines...

Stephania Bell
  (3:39 PM)

Tom: Clearly he was pretty sore after taking shots to the ribs. But reports out of Houston are that X-rays came back negative. Sounds as if they expect him to be available this week although they might hold him out of early practices.

Dan (NY)

Is P. Thomas coming back next week?

Stephania Bell
  (3:42 PM)

Dan: funny - you're asking about whether he might be back next week, others asking if he's done for the year...and that pretty much sums up the uncertainty around the status of Thomas. Interestingly, coach Sean Payton said recently that Thomas is improving and expects him to return to practice soon...but the team is not practicing during their bye. Maybe they hope to see him in practice in Week 11. But I would be surprised for him to make a game that fast, even if back in practice. So at best, prob another couple weeks.

Tim (Pittsburgh)

How confident are you that Portis DOES NOT play this week? I have Torain AND Keiland....so I'm able to wait until Monday to put one in. But if it looks like Portis is going to play, I'll avoid it altogether. DING!

Stephania Bell
  (3:45 PM)

Tim: As of today, pretty confident..but that could change. I change my thoughts based on what players do daily in practice, b/c that's how it works in real life rehab. You make adjustments based on how players respond to increasing activity. But even though Portis is back in practice, he is still sore apparently and a Grade III groin injury takes a long time to recover from. It's not just the running, it's the power and the agility, which takes longer. So no, don't think he plays as of NOW.

Tom (Los Angeles)

Is Beanie Wells reinjured or just bad? I dropped Hightower when Beanie took over the starting job, now I don't know what to do. Help!

Stephania Bell
  (3:47 PM)

Tom: Oops for dropping Hightower...but I understand why you did. Wells though was banged up all week, really didn't practice and Whisenhunt said post-game that he wasn't going to use him as much in the sets that he didn't have a chance to practice during the week. I think the team WANTS him to be the main guy, but issues with his knee, etc have held that up. I still think he's a risk from a durability standpoint, but if he can string together a few games without incident, he works up the carries. Problem is, it's a little late in the season to be waiting for that. I'd keep him but try to find a hotter hand right now.

Rich (Weymouth,MA)

I read somewhere that Best actually has Turf Toe on both feet, have you heard this?

Stephania Bell
  (3:50 PM)

Rich: Yes, that's been the case for a while. One foot almost fully better, but the other one still an issue but he says much better than it was.

Adam (East Lansing, MI)

Any news on Vernon Davis' injury?

Stephania Bell
  (3:51 PM)

Adam: Not much from an official standpoint. But his plan was to run routes during the bye week while others took the week off. Assuming he was able to do that, would be good sign heading into this week.

steve (work)

Looking more like Romo is done for season?

Stephania Bell
  (3:52 PM)

Steve: I would say that's the likelihood.

Jeff (Ft. Worth)

Is Alex Smith out?

Stephania Bell
  (3:53 PM)

Jeff: Sounds like Singletary plans to proceed with Troy Smith at the helm although I think Smith (A)is working back to practice this week.

Jason (Bmore)

Do you have any updates on Donald Driver? Is a quad injury something that lingers?

Stephania Bell
  (3:55 PM)

Jason: Like a hamstring, but on the other side of the thigh (the front). We saw him struggling with this for a few weeks before it turned into a bigger more serious injury. Hard to imagine it would be all better after a week off, but it certainly could be far better than it was. Team has not indicated what they're thinking about his status. May be a wait and see how it goes this week and if he can run up to speed in practice.

Poe Field (NJ)

Fellow Tiger Alum here! What are your thoughts on Moreno for the rest of the season, can he stay healthy?

Stephania Bell
  (3:57 PM)

Love the Poe Field reference! Interestingly McDaniels said today that Moreno may be the healthiest he's been all year, now that he's had the bye. That's not saying too much though since he came into the season with a significant hamstring injury. So while I'm encouraged - and we should point out that when he played between the two hamstring injuries he ran well and looked strong - I'm not confident that he can maintain that health necessarily. Solid reward, but high risk.

bill (la)

z miller will he be back next week?

Joe (WI)

Is Ricky Williams injured? Is that why he only had two carries?

Panthers Fan (Carolina)

Please give me some good news about D-Will for this weekend? Pretty please with sugar on top.

Stephania Bell
  (4:00 PM)

For some reason I am not able to post your questions all of a sudden!! So I will try to answer a few anyway on my own. As far as D Williams, he said last week that he was targeting Week 10 to return. Whether he can or not is of course unknown - we need to see him run again first. If he's out on the field Weds then I'm feeling more encouraged.

JC (NYC)

Is Fred Taylor ever going to come back from his injury?

Stephania Bell
  (4:01 PM)

Someone else asking about F Taylor - big mystery, but again, the Patriots must expect to be getting him back at some point since they have kept a spot for him on the roster.

Stephania Bell
  (4:02 PM)

And yes, expect Favre to play with his many injuries. If he made it the week after the "ankle" issues all surfaced, no reason to think he won't be out there again.

Stephania Bell
  (4:03 PM)

Sorry gang for the technical difficulties at the end, but thanks for coming. Blog to post later today, again on Thursday and then we'll chat and catch up Friday at 3. Sound good? Hope to see you then.
