Chat with Dave Telep

Dave Telep
  (2:58 PM)

Thanks for all your questions. I hope everyone stays tuned for this exciting early signing period. Let's get to the questions.

Sam (East Lansing)

Dave, I'm biased but word on campus is always that B10 school's don't get the big recruits as easily because we're not giving out as many handouts as the SEC and B12. Do you have any less conspiratorial reasons?

Dave Telep
  (2:59 PM)

The Big Ten tends to recruit more regionally than other conferences. Their schools do better within their states and region. No conspriracy theory.

heelsdude1 (NC)

If UNC lands Cody Zeller, what are its chances with BARU?

Dave Telep
  (3:01 PM)

I'd say nearly zero. Zeller would be an eliminator for Baru. The fact Baru is taking time to decide leads you to believe he is waiting on Zeller. If Zeller goes to UNC, Baru would have better options Maryland, Va Tech or College of Charleston.

Adam (CT)

How would a new two-year in college rule affect the recruiting of the top programs? Schools like Kentucky presumably would not be able to sign 4 top 10 guys in back to back years if players are staying for two years - would it create more strong teams as top players go to more diverse schools?

Dave Telep
  (3:02 PM)

I think most elite schools would need to tweak their recruiting strategy. I think the longterm affect, you would see pockets of elite players signed together to win a championship, but on the flipside you would see more diversity in the schools where the elite guys would sign.

Scott (South Dakota)

Dave - thanks for taking my question. Don't get to hear much about the Razorbacks up here, but how are they shaping up this year? They always seem to have decent talent and athletes, but just don't seem to put it together.

Dave Telep
  (3:04 PM)

Hi Scott, Ark. has signed a top five class with three from the same AAU team that won the AAU national championship. BJ Young, their PG was one of the fastest risers in the spring.

Jim (Dallas)

Gaze into the crystal ball, who will be the best NBA player from this year's class?

Dave Telep
  (3:05 PM)

The safe answer is Austin Rivers. His game translates really well to college as a scoring guard and to the NBA as a tyreke evans-style pg. THe riskier answer is anthony davis who is oozing with potential and is just scratching the surface of his talent.

Tyler (Jersey City)

Did Dom Pointer sign his LOI today with St. John's? Do the Johnnies have the best chance to land Pelle and Amir Garret?

Dave Telep
  (3:07 PM)

Not sure if Pointer signed today, but I watch him last friday night. He's really beginning to remind me of andre iguodala - a late bloomer with great ath. and starting to study to his jumper. Of all the guys they signed hes probably the most undervalued. Landing Pelle and Garrett would be getting greedy and would indicate that someone is likely not to qualify.

MG (Bloomington)

Do you believe Dan Dakich's statement for over a month that Zeller is IU bound?

Dave Telep
  (3:08 PM)

I don't believe that Zeller knew last week where he was going to college. If anyone said they knew over a month ago I find it hard to believe.

Josh Pearson (NC)

There was talk before last year that Duke was going downhill a little. With talk of repeating and the signing of Rivers and Cook, do you think that the doimnos will start falling, and that duke's success right now will jumpstart a recruiting hot trail of top 50 players to Duke for the the 2012, 2013, and 2014?

Dave Telep
  (3:10 PM)

Recruiting is always cyclical especially when your comparing two megapowers like Duke and UNC. Its amazing how fast the momentum changed and a lot of that had to do with the signing of Kyrie Irving. Three years ago when Duke was engaged in some battles and lost, people were quick to whisper. Now college coaches understand the power of the brand of Duke basketball and everyone expects Coach K to have a multi-year run on the recruiting trail.

chris (NY)

Evryone is talking about fab melo and dion waiters but having seem cj fair he also looks like a kris joseph/Hakeem warrick type 2 years down the road, what are your thoughts?

Dave Telep
  (3:13 PM)

Fair spent a good part of his second half of his hs carerr injured, so the honest answer is our evals are incomplete due to injury, but what I've heard is that he is doing really well. What I 've heard Fab is ahead of expectations and should start and Waiters is right where they want him to be - a valuable instant offense guy off the bench.

Rashad (Great State of Texas)

Whats the recruiting story on texas? With 4 guys expected to sign today, are there any rumors about any other big men for texas other than deandre daniels?

Dave Telep
  (3:15 PM)

I think Texas is ready to put this class to bed. Its been a long haul especially with the Kabongo drama of the last two weeks. The fact is the state of Texas is loaded in 2012 and 2013, especially pf and c. Cameron Ridley and Shaquille Cleare are the prizes and expect the Longhorns to move on from the senior class and spend 90 percent of their time on underclassmen.

Abe (Dubai)

Do you think the NCAA draws a parallel between Kanter and Selby in a way that they would both be ruled either eligible or ineligible in order to avoid being called unfair by one camp or the other? DO you also think that ruling Bost from Miss St eligible despite his clear violation is an indication that both would be eligigle?

Dave Telep
  (3:18 PM)

I think the NCAA looks at Kanter and Selby separately. My fear is that the NCAA will make an example out of one person per year ala Renardo Sidney. It's difficult to look at past elig. cases because each seems to be so different. My guess is that one of the two, Kanter or Selby, won't play this year. The NCAA seems intent on making a statement within each class.

Matt J. (Greenwich, CT)

How much of an impact do you see Erik Copes having during his freshmen year at GW, assuming he signs?

Dave Telep
  (3:20 PM)

I love Copes. Big man crush on him. It's a good thing his uncle Roland Houston is his uncle, otherwise they would have had a war on their hands to sign him. I think hes the most improved center on the east coast and would be dissappointed if he didn't turn himself into an All-A10 player as a soph.

chuck (st. petersburg,fl.)

how do you like villanova recruiting class?how will the cats do this year?

Dave Telep
  (3:22 PM)

I like it a lot. Most of the guys are phys. ready and Tyrone Johnson is a bulldog defensively at the PG spot. Its not a star-studded group but if Markus Kennedy can stay aggressive, Nova will be strong up front.

Reggie (Raleigh)

What is the possibility of UNC bringing in a class of Muhammad Rose Murphy Ridley Purvis

Dave Telep
  (3:25 PM)

Reggie, that's pretty greedy. I think UNC can land a couple guys off your list, but all five will be unlikely. Muhammad is a major priority, they have deep connections with Rose and haven't turned the heat up on Purvis just yet. Duke and Fla. will be the competition for Murphy and Ridley is Texas' No. 1 recruit.

Alex (Pittsburgh)

What do you think of PITT's 4 man class of PG-John Johnson, SF-Durand Johnson,PF- Jaylen Bond and C-Malcolm Gilbert? I do not see them in your top 25 classes, what gives?

Dave Telep
  (3:28 PM)

Like most Pitt classes theres a measure of toughness in this whole group. Since none of these guys are ranked in the ESPNU 100 expect coach Dixon to use this to their advantage and create an even bigger chip on their shoulders. John Johnson is a staright-line driver, Durand johnson is a hard-nosed wing from Baltimore and Bond is a explosive finisher at the rim. Gilbert is a long-term stock and a basket protector.

Splash (Seattle)

Have Isiah Thomas' recent comments damaged his chances at a good 2011 recruiting class at FIU?

Dave Telep
  (3:29 PM)

That remains to be seen, however it seems strange he would give rival Sun Belt coaches that much ammo to use against him in recruiting. I think he's created some questions that recruits will want answers to going forward.

Adam (CT)

Do you see UConn making headway with Chandler? Or will he eventually sign with Xavier?

Dave Telep
  (3:33 PM)

Xavier has a decision to make. If chandler doesn't sign this would be his second decommitment and i'm sure and its unlikely Chris Mack would wait around til the spring. If he does indeed open it up, we're hearing DePaul and UConn would get involved.

Sam (East Lansing)

I saw your tweet on Brandon Dawson's rebounding ability, but he isn't that tall. Who's a good player to compare his skill set to?

Dave Telep
  (3:35 PM)

Take this the right way, but he pursues loose like Barkley. In my travels last year, he was far and away the best offensive rebounder I saw. Coach Izzo doesn't have enough drills to hold him.

Splash (Seattle)

With big men being in such short supply in this class, will Angelo Chol be the biggest story of the spring?

Dave Telep
  (3:36 PM)

By the end of next week, he may be the highest rated big man on the board. He's handled his recruitment very meticuously and according to plan. I don't see him letting other schools jump in and hes already entertaining many elite programs. If your looking for a tip in watching who gets him it could be about the relationship with the head coach. With dist. being a factor for recruiting him, watch and see which coaches make the effort to visit him during the winter.

Chuck (Seattle, WA)

Kentucky has had unprecedented success in recruiting right now. Are they in a class by themselves when it comes to recruiting the elites?

Dave Telep
  (3:39 PM)

Right now they are. I can't recall, in my career, one school signing the No. 1 class three years in a row. Taking your point further, Arizona used to be PG U. That honor now belongs to the university of Calipari.

Chris (Columbia, MO)

Who do you think has the edge for Ben McLemore? Is it Kansas or Mizzou?

Dave Telep
  (3:41 PM)

Two weeks ago Kansas was the clear favorite. His visit to Mizzou was beneficial to the Tigers. While it may not be a coin flip, Mizzou has closed the gap. I'll say Kansas.

Walmart Wolvie (Down River, Michigan )

where do you think Amir Williams ends up? Could he be going to the best basketball program in the big ten, up in ann arbor?

Dave Telep
  (3:42 PM)

As of yesterday, I was hearing Fla and Ohio State. But this one has taken a lot of twists and turns.

al (lexington)

When are the bulk of the kentucky commitments loi's expected to be received

Dave Telep
  (3:43 PM)

Honest answer - I have no idea. But none of them seem to be in danger.

Jason (Virginia)

How good will Quinn Cook be. He got the starting role on team USA over Teague...could Cook be underrated?

Dave Telep
  (3:46 PM)

Cook is very good. There are a couple reasons why he got the starting role. It was the second year he was with the team and from a chemistry standpoint he worked better. He's not underrated, if he were ranked in the between 20 and 35, that would be reasonable and we have him at 24.

Tony Mitchell (Dallas)

Will I play this year at Mizzou or in the NBA next year?

Dave Telep
  (3:47 PM)

Tony, aren't you supposed to be in class?

BillFreiderFan (Upper Peninsula)

What are your impressions of Carlton Brundidge and Trey Burke and what are U-M's chances of landing Amir Williams ? Can you compare the games of three wing players from form the class of 2012, Glen Robinson III, JaVonte Hawkins and Sheron Dorsey-Walker ? Thks

Dave Telep
  (3:49 PM)

I like Brundidge a lot. He was having a great NBAPA camp until he got a concussion. I think with burke being a pass-first pg and williams' relationship with brundidge Mich. has a chance with Amir but he's been difficult to read within the last six months. I like Robinson. Havent seen Hawkins or Dorsey-Walker enough.

Ryan (MN)

What are your thoughts on Joe Coleman and Andre Hollins and how they can help the Gophers next year?

Dave Telep
  (3:52 PM)

Two Tubby Smith guys, these two are both intelligent bball players. Coleman is the more hard-nosed, slashing wing. Collins is the rainbow jump shooter who can assist as a secondary ballhandler. These are four-year, blue-collar, Tubby Smith wing players.

John (Houston, TX)

Who does Quincy Millers game compare to?

Dave Telep
  (3:53 PM)

I think Miller samples from Chris Bosh and Tracy McGrady.

Matt (chicago)

If IU does not get Zeller, what other options are out there for 2011

Dave Telep
  (3:54 PM)

If they don't get Zeller, there is no top 50 caliber replacement for Indiana. But that goes for every school in the country right now. Unless you get Zeller, Daniels, Chol, Pelle, Williams or Baru you're either looking under rocks or flying to Petersburg Russia for your next big man.

Ric (Little Rock)

What do you make of Ky Madden's situation? Does he end up at Arkansas?

Dave Telep
  (3:55 PM)

I spoke with Madden last night. He told me he was signing with Ark. on Friday. His is the only letter the Hogs don't have right now.

marty (Hillsborough, NC)

In your opinion who do you think lands Cody Zeller? I say Butler or Iu even though I'm a big tarheel fan!

Dave Telep
  (3:57 PM)

I have a no idea and behind the scenes all three parties are still in the dark. I almost think he set the date to force himself to make a decision. I would guess Indiana, but I wouldn't be surprised with either and I could make a strong case for each of the schools.

Stiller (Indy) [via mobile]

Will the Boilers land Amir Williams? Seems like a perfect replacement for JJ

Dave Telep
  (3:59 PM)

They are in the mix, but again Mich, Fla and Ohio State are right there as well. But I do agree, even though he's different than Juwan, he would be a good replacement.

Dave Telep
  (4:01 PM)

It's been a great first month. I really appreciate the turnout. Please stick with us all week as we break down the recruiting classes. Friday is the Basketball Recruiting Show from 1-3.
