I thought the Capitals looked good against the Rangers last night. It was a good one for them to win.

Antony (Philadelphia)

Can Flayers beat Capitals in this year?

Barry Melrose
  (3:06 PM)

Sure, the Flyers have a good team. Bobrovsky has been very solid in net and they are right at the top of the standing without Carter and Bartulis being major factors.

Ada111 (MS)

Melrose do you think the Pens can rebound from their 7-7-1 start? Did that game in Phoenix become the turning point?

Barry Melrose
  (3:07 PM)

I think they have to start playing Brad Johnson more. Fleury isn't playing well yet and I think they need wins and points more than worring about if Fleury is ready to play.

Andrew (Indiana)

Good afternoon and thanks for answering!Who are your top 5 teams at this point of the season? Do they rank the same way for you in terms of goaltending, scoring, and chances for a strong playoff run ending with at least a Finals berth?

Barry Melrose
  (3:08 PM)

I would go with (in no particular order) St. Louis, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Washington and Philadelphia.

Meto (Chicago)

When do you think Chicago should start panicking? What has been their biggest downfall so far this season?

Barry Melrose
  (3:10 PM)

Giving up too many goals. Right now they are -1 giving up 51 goals and only scoring 50. Right now they are an average club that needs to get better at home. They need to change that around quickly.

Nick (Arcata, CA)

Barry! Can I get some Hart Trophy love for my fellow Nick (Lidstrom)?

Barry Melrose
  (3:10 PM)

You can give Nicky the Hart Trophy every year. Right now, some of the other guys would be Havlick for St. Louis and Thomas from Boston.

todd (atlanta)

Hi Barry, What chance do you give the Wild of making the playoffs this year? They have great goaltending, and special teams. What else is missing? Thanks

Barry Melrose
  (3:12 PM)

I think they are a borderline team. They have a 30% chance of making it. They are playing well right now but they can't afford any injuries. I think they will be fighting for the last playoff spots with about four or five other teams.

Paul (Charlotte, NC)

Hi Barry, Jeff Skinner's been on FIRE down here, even scoring on the same point-per-game pace as captain Eric Staal. Are they going to be enough to carry the 'Canes this year? Calder for Skinner? Do you think we'll see 3 SE-division teams in the playoffs? Thanks!

Barry Melrose
  (3:13 PM)

I think the Canes will be fighting for the lat couple of playoffs spots. Skinner has been playing well so far this year and is in the running for ROY. Right now they are .500 and that's not going to get it. They need to improve.

Shawn (Motor D)

Is Savard gonna be helping the Bruins down the stretch or is he gonna be in another sweater??

Barry Melrose
  (3:15 PM)

With concussions you can't tell. They thought he'd be ready for the season after the summer. We are a moth into the season and he's still not ready to play. I think the Bruins shout be prepared to play without him and if they do get him, it will be a bonus

TP (Buffalo, NY)

Barry what's wrong with my sabres?!?

Barry Melrose
  (3:17 PM)

They are a lot like Jersey. they aren't playing well for whatever reason. Ryan Miller wasn't playing well at the start of the season. But their last game against Toronto was a great win and sometimes a win like that can turn a season around.

Scooter, minny [via mobile]

How do u think the wild will do this year?

Barry Melrose
  (3:18 PM)

I think the Wild will be a team fighting for the last playoff spot in the West. They are playing good right now and I think if they make the playoffs, it will be a good year for the Minnesota Wild.

Ada111 (MS)

What's your prediction for the Bruins and Pens game tonight?

Barry Melrose
  (3:19 PM)

I think a lot of it depends on who plays in the net for the Pens. If Johnson plays, Pittsburgh wins. The Bruins have a lot of injuries right now so it's a good time to be playing them.

Arshad (NY)

Can Rangers make the playoffs this year?

Barry Melrose
  (3:21 PM)

I think they will make the playoffs. They are playing well but they did lose a tough one to Washington last night. Gaborik is close to returning.

Ash (NYC)

What's wrong with leafs?

Barry Melrose
  (3:22 PM)

The Leafs are turning into the same team as last year, they can't score. At the start of the year they were getting great goaltending and they were getting some goals but the goals have dried up. As of now, the Leafs look very similar to their team of last year.

Ryan (St Louis)

How long til Alex Steen gets the respect around the league that he deserves?

Barry Melrose
  (3:23 PM)

I think people in hockey knows he's a good player.

Aisha (NYC)

What do you think about Islander this year? Thanks

Barry Melrose
  (3:24 PM)

The Islanders are in trouble. They have injuries and I don't think this team right now can make the playoffs.

AJ (Detroit)

Have you come down off that Chicago pick? Give me some love for my Wings, predictions?

Barry Melrose
  (3:24 PM)

Actually I picked Vancouver this year, I picker Chicago last year. But the Wings look good right now. They are a healthy team and wouldn't surprise me to see them win the West.

Koray (Turkey)

Hi Barry , Do you think Penguins should trade couple guys and get a talented 1-2 line winger for Crosby or Malkin. Isnt it time ??

Barry Melrose
  (3:26 PM)

They guys they would like to trade, nobody wants. They have to hang tough until Staal comes back. They should evaluate things after that.

Adam (San Francisco)

Which rookie has been the most impressive so far?

Barry Melrose
  (3:26 PM)

Jeff Skinner for Carolina. He's playing great in key situations. I thini he's the best rookie in the NHL right now.

Ed (Athens, Ga)

Barry,What do the Atlanta Thrashers need player wise to get more consistent?

Barry Melrose
  (3:28 PM)

They are giving up way too many shots, so they need to cut that down first off. They also need to get better defensively so they don't need as many goals to win.

Jim (Toronto)

You surprised there were no trades coming out of the GM meetings yesterday?

Barry Melrose
  (3:29 PM)

Not really. It's hard to make a trade in the NHL right now with the salary cap. I think most teams right now like their teams. Buffalo and New Jersey are really the only teams that have had bad starts. I think it's a little early to panic after only 15 games.

Barry Melrose
  (3:30 PM)

Hope everyone enjoys the games tonight. I'll be with you next week.
