Chat with Chuck Cooperstein

  (3:59 PM)

Hey there Nice to be with you. We're going to try to do this every Thursday during the season. Geat win in Memphis last night. Let's go!

Kevin (Dallas)

Chuck,Any updates on Roddy? And when he comes back, can he add enough to the team for them to seriously contend, or will a move have to be made?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:01 PM)

Ah yes, the question all mavericks fans are dying to know the answer to. The mavericks would like to know the anser too. He's still in a walking boot. No word on when its coming off, but given that we're at November 11 already, even a December 1 start would seem terribly optimistic

eddie (college station)

What do you think about shawn marion? Overpaid, and overvalued? great defensive player but really brings nothing beyond that. every time he touches the ball the hair on the back of my neck stands up because he a layup and will miss it half the time. i saw we trade him.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:03 PM)

Given that the Mavs have had precious few good defenders in their history, Watching Marion do that is a godsend. His offense isn't what it once was; he needs the open court to really be effective. But when you watch his defense and see how he shuts down the best small forwards in the league. (Rudy Gay had his lowest point total of the eyar last night) His value cannot be understated

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:06 PM)

Rachel-- It's easy. Chandler has been flat out better. Haywood didn't finish very strongly last year. He was great right after the season, but tailed off. The Mavs gave him the money, but they had no clue, at the time, that they were going to trade for Chandler, and that Chandler would prove to be such an effective, positive influence on their team,

Deshawn Stevenson (Dallas)

I want to be in the rotation when Roddy comes back and takes over my spot. Is there any room for me?... Give me like 15 minutes a night and I am good.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:07 PM)

Great game D last night. Love that you've shown your Washington three point form. If you can do that and play the tough defense on some of the off guards that we've seen. You might have a chance in Rick Carlisle's rotation

jorge (fort worth)

Why didn't jones get more minutes last night? Brian cardinal played 20, is this a joke?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:08 PM)

No joke. Cardinal is a backup power forward. Jones is an off guard. With Butler out, and marion playing the small forward, Cardinal was getting in, and when Dirk was hurt it became even more obvious that would be the case

D (Terrell,Texas)

Who can the team acquire within reason to put them over the top?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:08 PM)

Whoi do you want?

Michael C. (Westport, CT)

Shouldn't Jason Kidd retire at this point? He just doesn't have the legs anymore, and never really had the shot. He could continue to play the way he does for 10 more years but it's time to let the young guys in. Your thoughts?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:11 PM)

C'mon now. He's become a very good three point shooter, and reamins an unparalled passer. While he struggles defensively against the quick point guards, frankly, EVERY PG struggles with the way the game is called now, he still plays the passing lanes great. He still can play against stronger players because no one has stronger hands than he does. I'll take my chances with him. Especially if they cann get his minutes down. 29 minutes last night against Memphis was great

Kevin (Dallas)

Any good behind the scenes Mavs stories you may have that fans don't have access to?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:13 PM)

How about Dirk riding to the arena on the first bus to get to there a full two hours before game time. Until this year, he hadn't done it since his rookie year. Jason Terry now stays behind after everyone has left the gym from shootaround to get even more shots up. It sure looks like it's woking given how he's shooting over 50 percent from the floor and from 3? Is that OK?

Kevin (Dallas)

You're starting a team, you need a PF. If you're not factoring age, Pau or Dirk?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:15 PM)

Dirk, and it's not even debatable. Lots of Lakerpropaganda trying to make that case. Dirk has much more repsosibility for his team's success than does Pau. pau has become a very good player, but Dirk is truly one of the most unique player this game has ever seen, and other than maybe Hakeem, the greatest international player in NBA history

Kevin (Dallas)

This is a question for all the readers... Is there any better moment than when you listen to ESPN 103.3 during Mavs games and you hear this.. "Dirk (or Terry) for three...He hits!!!" The answer is no, there isn't. You're the man Chuck.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:16 PM)

How much of a percentage are you looking for? ;)

Ali (Dallas)

How is Haywood's attitude after being ousted as the starter by Chandler who IS playing much better?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:19 PM)

Haywood's attitude has been excellent. He and Chandler get along really well. there was some question about that because of a tiff those two had when the Wizards and Hornets got together. He hasn't played all that great so far, but had a good one last night. The mavericks have a real chance with those two because they can always keep a big on the floor and hardly ever have to play small

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:20 PM)

Tough call, but a great problem for Carlisle isn't it? Marion's great attitude allows for the flexibility

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:21 PM)

He's done it a lot more than you really want to admit.

David R. (Knoxville, TN)

Hate that Dirk shaved his hair (I know its not a question). I love the Mavs, and have blinders on - so help me out - Can they be better than a 1st or 2nd round playoff team in the league as the powers are currently constructed?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:23 PM)

So you're big on the surfer look? I've been to Knoxville, no beaches there. Absiolutely they can be better than 1st or 2nd round. all depends on the matchup and how they're playing at the time. And you can probably say that for the seven other teams who will make the playoffs in the West

Michael (Dallas)

what are the chances of david kahn trading love & rubio for a bag of jelly beans and furture draft picks?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:23 PM)

From your mouth to God's ears

eddie (college station)

any chance jamal crawford becomes a mav anytime soon? do you think he would be a good fit?

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:25 PM)

Jamal Crawford is not as good as Jason Terry. Why would I want him?

Kevin (Dallas)

Name your greatest Dirk memory.

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:29 PM)

It's kind of like trying to choose between your kids. You can't, no I'll just list a few in no particular order. 50 vs Phoenix in game 5 of the WCF. 37-15 Vs San Antonio in Game seven with the three pointn play that sent the game to OT. Scoring his 20,000th point against the Lakers. Any of the eight game winning shots wityh under :02 left since 2005-06 more than anyone else in the NBA. Seeing him grab bags out of the equipment truck at 2 AM after we arrived in San Francisco showing me what a regular guy he is. Somehow don't see Kobe doing anything like that

Chuck Cooperstein
  (4:30 PM)

That will do it for today. Thanks for checking in. Good stuff. Talk again next week here and tomorrow on 103.3 ESPN when the Mavericks take on Philly. And every day at 2:00 with Nate Newton on the Coop and Nate show
