Chat with Nick Friedell

ESPNChicago.com
  (1:28 PM)

Nick just called and said he's a few minutes from the Berto Center, so give him just a couple of minutes. Thanks for all of your questions. He'll be here shortly.

Nick Friedell
  (1:40 PM)

What's going on, everybody? Let's get this chat rolling ...

scott (frankfort)

Who is going to have the better career J-Wall or D-Rose??? Or is this just an apples and oranges kinda comparrison?

Nick Friedell
  (1:41 PM)

Who knows right now? But there is definitely a lot of intrigue heading into their first regular season game against each other tomorrow night. I'd look for both to have very big games.

Nick (Grayslake)

What is the status of Boozer? He looked to have an awful big soft cast on his hand last night.

Nick Friedell
  (1:43 PM)

The Bulls still hope he will be able to come back the first week of December. He really hasn't started rehabbing that much. though. He can't shoot yet and it will take him a while to get back the form he was showing earlier in the summer.

Dave (Glendale Heights)

Hey Nick...so, I bet my brother $10 that Luol Deng would finish the season above 40% on three pointers. He's at about 43% so far. Am I crazy to think he can sustain this all season?

Nick Friedell
  (1:45 PM)

Dave, I'm sorry to say this, but I think you just lost 10 bucks. Luol has definitely improved, but I don't think he'll shoot 40 percent for the rest of the year.

Bobby C (Canton/Macomb Il)

Hey Nick, I was just curious what you think the biggest surprise for the Bulls has been this season?

Nick Friedell
  (1:47 PM)

It has to be Taj. The Bull shave always loved him, but after the rough preseason that he had there had to be questions as to whether he could duplicate the success he had last season. He has played even better than they could have hoped. He is a steadying presence in the Bulls lineup and is good for at least 12 points and 7 boards a night.

Gus (Gainesville, Florida)

The inevitable, whats the latest on any Melo to the Bulls talk?

Nick Friedell
  (1:48 PM)

No new news. The Bulls would love to have him and he'd be happy to play in Chicago. I still don't see how the deal goes down, though.

Bill (Brookfield)

Hi Nick,When Carlos Boozer comes back, do you think it will take awhile for the Bulls to gel with his style of play?Which team in the East will give the Bulls the hardest time when the playoffs come around?

Nick Friedell
  (1:49 PM)

I do think it will take a while for the team to adjust. I don't think they will start playing their best basketball until February or March. As for which team in the East gives them the most trouble, I still say it's Orlando. The Magic have crushed the Bulls almost every time they've played over the last couple of years.

Eron (Madison)

If the Bears season continues to go south and coaching changes come in the off season, do you see Mike Tice being promoted to Head Coach? He is a highly regarded coach and I would hate to see him leave because of the situation he came into. Also, I see this is a more likely course of action than the Bears going out and getting a high profiled coach.

Nick Friedell
  (1:51 PM)

Eron, you're in the wrong chat my man. But to answer your question, I don't think Tice in the guy. If the Bears decide to fire Lovie they've got to go after Bill Cowher, right?

darius (evansville in)

is boozer a liability with injuries

Nick Friedell
  (1:52 PM)

Is Benny the Bull a little insane?

Chas G (San Jose, CA)

What was lunch with [two future] legends like? I live in Cally, but i listen to Waddle and Silvy show almost everyday. Im in high school right now so I listen to the 2 1/2 hour podcast while doing homework. Anyway I can get on the show?

Nick Friedell
  (1:55 PM)

Lunch with a Legend was awesome. I think both guys have a good time. If you want to get on the show talk to Silvy ... or get in the NBA and average 25 a game.

James (Naperville)

Hey Nick - I was reading your article about D-Rose's turf toe the other day. Is this really something that will plague him for the rest of his career?

Nick Friedell
  (1:56 PM)

I think it is something that will bother him at times for the foreseeable future. I don't think it will be much of an issue over the next few years, but I do think it may hamper him a little once he hits his 30's. The good news for the Bulls is that he is a long way from that point.

Nick (Wisconsin)

Am I crazy to think the Bulls can go 4-3 over the Circus trip?

Nick Friedell
  (1:58 PM)

Yes. If the Bulls go 4-3 on that trip I think Thibs might actually smile.

ray (chicago )

before tip off, i notice D Rose turns to the end of the court and blows a kiss im i right

Nick Friedell
  (1:58 PM)

You are. He blows a kiss to his family. They sit in one of the luxury boxes behind the basket.

Scott (Vernon Hills)

Derrick Rose seems to be turning into a dunk highlight machine since the second half of last season? What would you attribute this to and would the dunk contest be something you'd want to see him participate in?

Nick Friedell
  (2:00 PM)

I think Derrick enjoys putting on a show for fans in games. I don't think he'll ever end up in the dunk contest though. He has said repeatedly that he doesn't feel like he is creative enough to pull off enough dunks. I've disagreed with him, but he's pretty stubborn about that.

Adam (Chicago)

Don't you think the Cubs should have hired Sandbe...just kidding. Bogans has been more than solid so far. Any chance he keeps the job after Brewer gets back?

Nick Friedell
  (2:03 PM)

I think Keith could keep the job all year if the Bulls don't make a deal. Thibs loves him, he plays solid defense and he can hit open threes. Brewer is starting to look better, but he can't hit the long range shots. Bogans can.

Tim (Northbrook)

What up Nick? Am I crazy to think that with a full season under Thibs, Rose continuing to develop and dominate, and with the addition of Boozer that the Bulls could knock of 1 of the big three teams?

Nick Friedell
  (2:05 PM)

Like I've said before, I still don't think the Bulls can beat the Heat, Celtics or Magic in a seven game series. All of those teams have more talent top to bottom. Maybe next year the Bulls can give them a run, I just don't see it happening.

Erick Hernandez (Chicago, Il)

I dont know about you guys, but from what i've seen from the Bulls this year this is single handedly the best team we have had since the Jordan Era. The Bench is just absolutely stacked. That being said how much do you think Lebron regrets not coming to Chicago now?

Nick Friedell
  (2:06 PM)

Hold on a second. I think the Bulls are very good this year, but the bench is definitely not stacked? It's one of this team's biggest problems right now. As for LeBron, I don't think he knows what to think at the moment.

SteveFitz (Chicago, IL)

With Taj's improved play, who I'm a huge fan of and he reminds me of a poor mans Marcus Camby, are the Bulls feeling more and more like they're better off keeping him rather than trading him even if the right guy comes available, even Melo?

Nick Friedell
  (2:07 PM)

The Bulls love Taj. But if they were getting the right piece(s) in return, they would deal him.

Ty (San Francisco)

Nick, love your coverage of da bulls! Have to ask - we are seeing amazing things from John Wall his rookie year. In your crystal ball, who has the better career Derrick or JW?

Nick Friedell
  (2:09 PM)

Derrick for this reason ... I think he has a better chance to win a title or two because the core group around him is much better and probably will be for at least the next few years. He will also end up averaging 25 ppg at some point in his career. Both players are going to be extremely good, though.

Brian Frett (Lake Zurich, IL)

Is Derrick Rose the most athletic point guard you have ever seen?

Nick Friedell
  (2:09 PM)

Yes. Is there anyone, aside from Wall maybe, who you can think of?

B-SCAL (BERTO CENTER)

YO NICKY, WHY CAN'T A BROTHA GET MORE THAN 3 MINTUES PT! I MEAN WE WERE UP BY 30 THE WHOLE SECOND HALF!

Nick Friedell
  (2:11 PM)

I don't know, Scal. But the fans already adore you ... if it's any consolation.

Aaron (Villa park)

the bulls always make some sort of trade at the deadline. who do you see realistically being dealt from the team?

Nick Friedell
  (2:13 PM)

The best trade piece the Bulls have right now is Taj. He's still in his rookie contract and he is still young. I think a lot of teams will be asking about him as the deadline approaches.

george w bush (texas)

nick, i have been enjoying listenning to you on the radio. big fann. why don't you and the wife come down to texas for a visit?

Nick Friedell
  (2:14 PM)

Wife? I need a girlfriend first, W. Maybe you can set me up with one of your daughter's friends when I get to Dallas next week.

Matt (Oak Park)

Sorry Nick. I guess that the Bulls don't have the most star studded lineup out there, but in the last seasons, with a worse team, we have played the C's tough every game and the heat have no depth. If the series went 7, the miamithrice would be the most tired me on the planet. Bulls take that series if it goes 7

Nick Friedell
  (2:15 PM)

Are you related to Gar?

Nick (Wisconsin)

How underrated is Rose's passing ability at this point? I know he might not be on Rondo's or CP3's level but he has had some pretty darn good passes this year. And I believe has more double digit assists this year then all of last year.

Nick Friedell
  (2:16 PM)

Rose has made a lot of nice passes already and he's getting much more comfortable as a distributor. He's already had three double digit assist games. Last year he had six.

deacon (chicago)

did rose and noah carpool together to lunch with a legend?

Nick Friedell
  (2:17 PM)

No, but I wish they did. Derrick was early ... Jo was a little late.

MC Welk (SLC)

Jazz fan here, thanks for you Boozer/Benny the Bull comment, had me cracking up.

Nick Friedell
  (2:18 PM)

I'm here to entertain, MC. What happened to the Utes?

Ken P (Sheboygan)

Has Thibs told Rose to cut down on his 3-point attempts with his early season struggles from deep?

Nick Friedell
  (2:19 PM)

Thibs doesn't talk to Rose much about his offense. He is much more concerned with improving his defense.

Ron (Chicago)

Could you see the Bulls making a run at Caron Butler this offseason? Plugging him at the 2 guard could solidify that starting unit, in my opinion.

Nick Friedell
  (2:21 PM)

It all depends on what he would sign for ... and if there is actually a lockout.

ray (florida)

you say the heat boston and orlando are better .. the heat is weak at point and inside.. orlando just gives us fits because we always double dwight and leave their shooters open and boston we always play tough i know u are the beat writer so u cant be all bias.. but in reality boozer noah deng rose matches up with garnett pierce rondo and allen

Nick Friedell
  (2:22 PM)

Are you related to Gar, too?

Gerardo (Chicago)

Nick, luol deng looked amazing last night. when carlos boozer comes back, do you see his numbers rise or do they go down?

Nick Friedell
  (2:24 PM)

I think Deng is going to get even more open looks once Boozer returns. Teams are going to have to drop down on Boozer in the post which should give Deng a little more room to roam.

Gmasch (Chicago)

What up Nick. Here's a thought: Noah is looking stellar so far, Bosh is getting underutilized down in Miami and they have no paint presence. Do you foresee a straight Bosh/Noah trade in the future, and would that even put the Bulls in a better position than they are now?

Nick Friedell
  (2:25 PM)

I honestly don't think the Bulls would make the deal. Plus, if Noah stays healthy, he's actually a bargain at $12 million a year. Crazy to think about, but true.

LeBron James (South Beach)

Do you want to trade jobs?

Nick Friedell
  (2:26 PM)

No, because I love my job. But I will trade paychecks with you.

Finnigan (Chicago)

Who wins more games, the Bears the rest of the way or the Bulls on the Circus trip?

Nick Friedell
  (2:26 PM)

Bulls on the circus trip.

Bobby (Round Lake)

Nick- Why do you think it has taken Deng this long to become such a threat? You see other guys on this team (i.e. Rose, Gibson, Noah) come to the NBA and become immediate impacts on their team, yet, Deng has taken years to get to where he is at now. I know practice and experience do wonders, but why were wonders not needed for other guys on this team? I guess I'm just not a Deng fan yet. I'll wait to see your answer. Thanks.

Nick Friedell
  (2:28 PM)

Bobby, I think Deng was a serious threat early in his career but then he started to get hurt and people began to question his toughness ... and his contract. The big thing is that he knows he doesn't have to play the role of impact player with Rose running the show. I do think he'll have a solid year this season, though.

Danny (Chicago)

Do you think there's any chance that Melo realizes he has a good team in Denver and signs the extension or is his mind made up?

Nick Friedell
  (2:29 PM)

I think Melo is long gone. I think he'll end up in NYC at some point in the near future.

Michael (Orlando, FL)

With Boozer coming back, where does that leave Asik? Is he going to be under utilized like Gortat down here?

Nick Friedell
  (2:31 PM)

Asik will continue to play 5-10 minutes a game even when Boozer gets back. Thibs likes him and he knows he's only going to get better if he continues to play.

David (Chicago)

From your experience with the team this year what is the locker room like? Do they seem to have good chemistry off the court?

Nick Friedell
  (2:33 PM)

I think the guys on this team like each other a lot. They hang out with each other off the floor and they trust one another. It shows in the way they play on the floor.

Joe Williams (Montgomery, AL.)

what's up nick? i think that the Bulls will need to see more of Korver at the SG position. I think that we all were a little surprised to see him playing behind Bogans. Do u think he should start?

Nick Friedell
  (2:34 PM)

I don't think Korver will start because I don't think Thibs is confident in his defense. I think Korver will end up playing between 20-25 minutes a game off the bench.

Tim (Northbrook)

When does Gar start talking about a D Rose max deal?

Nick Friedell
  (2:35 PM)

Three years ago.

Nick Friedell
  (2:35 PM)

All right everybody, I am out of here. I will talk to you guys next week from Dallas. Get ready for the circus trip ... it will definitely be entertaining.
